This was on the lower end of my Seth Ring book rankings, but overall it was still a really enjoyable story.
At first I was really excited about the idea of Merrick and Joseph starting their own mining company while also helping the World Guard defend the planet, but it seems Seth has moved away from that concept. (Maybe because he is doing a true solider story in Exlian which is what I hope.) That being said I really like this idea of Merrick having the chance to change a future that has already happened, so I hope the story is executed well.
Things I specifically liked about this book Merrick building up his own troops, the character interactions, introduction of new exciting monsters, fighting for the gorge, and set up to gain the world spirits and enter the palace. I really think that the series is moving in a positive direction and hopefully as it continues it becomes more distinct from the other Seth stories.
What I don’t like some plot points after being introduced got immediately invalidated, a few distracting grammar mistakes, and my issue with a lot of the recent Seth books I have read they feel extremely similar. The way Merrick observes the world, interactions between Sellie and Merrick, being hunted by a lizard kin, talking spirit (god) beast companions, etc it just feels extremely similar to Thorns trials.
That being said it is still a really good book and I am looking forward to the next one.

I truly enjoyed reading this book, however, there were several things that prevented me from loving it outright.
I’ve said this before in regards to Mr. Ring’s previous novels in both this series and his others, is that he keeps using the word “causing” to describe reasons behind actions. This isn’t isolated to his work as I’ve seen this in other works in this genre. This greatly removes the reader from the epic world he is trying to build.
Additionally, the introduction of completely novel enemies without any foreshadowing and plot points without a hint prior to build these events up, diminishes the impact of the book.
However, I did like the progression and the development of the character which is a major reason why I like reading this genre. I will continue to read this series, but I really wish for that sense of immersion that I get from reading other series like Bastion and mother of learning among other giants in this genre.
I liked this one enough that I read it in a single day. I only found two mistakes. So excellent editing in my opinion. Mistakes will be listed on Goodreads. I haven't seen this series being written on Royalroad or anywhere else.
Liked the heros and villans, the original story line, the underdog winning and the writing style Would recomend this to any age group who wants an exciting yet relaxing read.I am 76yr old and prefere sci fi and fantacy literature.
Even better than the first in the series. Our hero is going to save the world by slaughtering slaver human invaders, evil lizards and the occasional giant toad. 4 more volumes to go, apparently, and I’ll be there for all of them.
Merrick is easy to like as are the friends he gathering. He's gathering power quickly and still trying to understand all he can do fast paced, great storyline
