The world is falling apart, and it's Logan's to put it back together. Logan is a peace enforcement officer on Earth's flagship space colony of Nova Roma. Everyday he fights to put intergalactic scumbags behind bars. But there's an evil growing on the street that threatens to take down Nova Roma. And it may be too big for Logan or anyone else to stop.
( Format : audiobook. " "The Universe had a strange sense of humour." Not so much a novella as three stories loosely strung together, which tell of Logan, a cop, thrown accidentally 300+ years into the future from a now dead Earth to Nova Roma City where he again joins the police force, and of his police partner, Travner, a disillusioned war veteran who lives for violent action without ever seeming to come to any harm himself. Neither have any superpowers, or costumes, or superhero attributes, other than that of trying to be peacekeepers in an increasingly violent world.
Simply, even naively, written, the text needed to have been better edited to remove several irritating repeated observations which scatter through the story pointlessly, like Logan's father comparing the America of the 20th century to the Roman Empire (he was an historian), and others which cannot be stated here without spoilers. The book had obviously been written in little chunks and been stitched together without thought of how it would read as a whole to create the overall theme of no matter how much technology advances, human nature remains the same. Having said that, it is an enjoyable listen with narrator Matt Butcher's pleasant voice warmly reading with good expression although the individual characters are only slightly differentiated.
My thanks to the rights holder who freely gifted me a complimentary copy of Fallen Empire, at my request, via Audiobook Boom. It is a short, easy listen which presents some thought provoking ideas and has interesting story lines. It is not, however, as it appears to be represented in the synopsis. Nor is there too much graphic violence, although it is suggested as being ever present. Instead, it focuses more on how violence on both a personal and multinational scale affects people's lives.
This is a fairly short book about a cop who is transported to the 25th century and fearing being taken for loony quickly assemulates by attending the peace office academy. Logan and his partner, Travner, patrol the mean streets of Nova Roma. They battle the crooks and low-lifes, thieves and drug dealers; celebrating after work with a drink or five. Nova Roma appears to be an empire currently at war with the barbarians. Travner had served in the military and is now disillusioned with the war; he and Logan have physiological discussions about how every previous empire had fallen and as human greed seemed to continue unabated this empire would fall as well. Travner still suffers from flashbacks and this is frequently alluded to. There is an active resistance and the book describes the conflict between the protesters and the peace force. Logan suffers a tragedy which is depicted along with how he is able to get through it. I think this book should be longer with more information about the war, how it is being fought, more information about the transition from 21st to 25th century and how Logan was able to survive after arriving in the new time. Provide more about the new technology available. I enjoyed the conversations between Logan and Travner.
This book claims to be a scifi superhero thriller on here and amazon, but the superhero part is not really true at all and can give a misleading impression of the book and it is notable that it is listed as a scifi time travel thriller on goodreads, which is a little more accurate even if the actual time travel has been completed by the point where the book starts.
This book is an enjoyable take on a common theme of humanity failing to learn from the mistakes of the past and proceeding to make them all over again later as empires gradually fall from grace, this time it being one in the future that is repeating many of the mistakes of our past and present in a manner that is all to clear to the hero, Logan, who through a strange mishap has found himself in this future.
The narrator did a good job with this book, giving a good solid performance with good pacing that served to nicely enhance the story.
This book felt like it was just one chapter in a larger world, so it will be interesting to see whether or not the author returns to it in the future.
[Note - I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review.]
Fallen Empire was said to be a superhero scifi book. No real superhero as I did not consider someone suddenly waking up the same person hundreds of years in the future a superhero. What did he do that classified him as a superhero? NOTHING. Also being told the main character suddenly traveled hundreds of years once does not make it a time travel thriller. Also as for Sci fi continuity was missing how come the future new planet was able to develop flying cars and life like robots but still only have the same weapons and body armor for people especially police? I also found the story lacking any real plot. While I found the loss of his wife sad it didn't really change him or the storyline that much. I got confused in some parts with the relationship of the characters or lack of relationship. Why was his wife's sister never brought up earlier in the story? Sorry but this was just a hodge podge of little events that didn't really add up or matter to me. The narrator was okay but not great. I received a free copy of the audible book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
There was not a superhero cape in sight. I don't want to downplay the role that peacekeepers play in this book, they do an important and difficult job, but superhero?
I'm also missing the growing evil, yes there was lots of crime and society seemed to be spiraling down, but I totally missed a specific evil.
So what was right about it, there's lots of action, there's emotional drama and the lead character is really likeable. I did enjoy it, I just wish the blurb had been more accurate.
The narration is well done, good character voices and the delivery was clear and dynamic.
I received a free copy of this book from the author and/or narrator and/or publisher and I voluntarily wrote this honest review.
I read this in one sitting and the first 15 pages I realized this was a train wreck of a story. Man jumps to the future to be a cop like he was in the past and does nothing to change the world, that couldn't have been done if had been born in that time period. The author should validate what their story was to be and rework this one. I give a b for effort.
Not a bad story, but a bit hackneyed. It just seed to be a twentieth century cop story told three hundred years in the future and galaxies away. Not much has changed, and the author acknowledges this. OK, they have flying cars, but people still use firearms? Everybody still speaks standard American English? It seems unlikely, but maybe Star Trek got it right.
Fallen Empire is a futuristic book about a police officer in a society that is falling apart and frighteningly mirrors our own. The short book includes multiple stories that are often tragic and combine into a portrait of a civilization and the people within it.
I enjoyed this book but wish it had been longer so it could go into more details but the plot idea was good, so I will be giving this author another go especially if he does a longer story. This book is made up of three short stories the first book is about how an ordinary cop gets sent into the future by mistake and how he goes about rebuilding his life and if he still wants to do the dangerous job of being a law inforcement officers especially when the bullets start flying. Part two sees the the partners investigate when bodies start turning up at the high rollers parties and all the clues point to a connection with the start of the war but with everybody having a reason for wanting the victims dead they have look into the past for the answer. Part three drug dealing has always been rampant but when a crooked cop turns the other way things really get out of hand and it is up to the partners to step up. The narrator was good and I would listen to him again.
