Descolonizando la mente palestina

Rate this book

Read Palestine Week

Growing up in the US, I had a very Israel-centric upbringing. This is characterized by my Western education and surroundings, even though I knew more Palestinians than Israelis growing up.

In the midst of this war and genocide that has been going on long before I was born, I am seeking to learn the truth. Earlier this year, I read THE HUNDRED YEARS' WAR ON PALESTINE and THE WAY TO SPRING. I highly recommend both.

In this short narrative, we learn more about the current state of Palestine. Apartheid is always wrong. So is genocide. So too, I gather, are the Oslo Accords. They are mentioned frequently here, and clearly aren't being followed.

How long will we stand by? Will we let what is happening to Palestine happen to Lebanon? Who is next? Settler colonialism must not prevail.

"For Zionism's continued presence in Palestine, the 'Other' must be assimilated and enslaved without becoming conscious of the enslavement. Hence the granting of 'semi-autonomous' rule over the most crowded Palestinian cities, and hence the logic driving the Oslo Accords."

Slightly more academically inclined than I'm used to, but despite that, you can still feel the rage and desperation in Dr. Eid's words as he criticizes how Western-led peace processes, particularly the Oslo Accords, do not favor Palestinian self-determination and were never meant to do so.

"Hamas failed to see that, in essence, what Obama was offering was not different than what George W. Bush and, before him, Bill Clinton offered. All US presidents have made it crystal clear that the US-Israel ties are 'unbreakable."

I really liked how he built on Edward Said's work, mentioning that, "For Said, coexistence in Palestine-Israel is unachievable at the present moment because Israel is not the state of all its citizens, but rather the state of Jews entitled to the 'entire land of Israel' and because there has been no serious attempt on the Israeli side to acknowledge the right of the 'Other' to exist as an equal partner."

Dr. Eid also explains how the two-state solution isn't a viable option for a free Palestine. "...the two-state solution in principle does not offer the Palestinian people their basic rights under international law-equality and right of return. A Bantustan-like solution is a racist solution par excellence."

This short book ends with the author stating that a one-state solution, based on secular democracy and drawn along the lines of historical Palestine, is the way forward for both Palestinians and Jews. Is this too much to hope for? Only time will tell.

A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE!
5 stars for a book that is both depressing and illuminating. i finished it in one sitting.

once a person starts reading about the Palestine conflict, they can never un-see Israel and USA's stance on this issue. It is mind boggling how this matter has been mishandled, misrepresented and ignored for more than a century now. And one can never go back to seeing Jews as only victims of another mind-boggling genocide. Truly a heart-wrenching and deeply insightful book.

ALSO-
education, literacy, and access to history are privileges. please remember to utilize them.

as the world falls apart, the least we can do is be cognizant of politics and listen to survivors' stories.

thank you Literary Press Group of Canada for giving me access to this before it comes out.

Haidar Eid's political analysis - especially when discussing Palestine in relation to South Africa - is always enlightening. This very timely - and quite recent - volume of essays explores various aspects of these two different apartheid systems. His time doing his PhD in Johannesburg gives him a kind of insight that others lack. I also really like the writings on the legacy - and prescience - of Edward Said in this collection. Perhaps the best contributions Eid makes in this book is the discussion of the need to De-Osloize Palestine because of the Osloization and NGOification of Palestine as a consequence of Oslo. It's a very important book for anyone looking for a way forward that centers the liberation of Palestine and the Palestinian people.

First, one-state is a stupid fairytale and there is too much hate. Have explained in another book I reviewed why you can’t compare the situation and forming 1 state at all with what happened in SA, yet these misguided people think they can. Most of the book is just full of revolutionary screeching and nonsense that isn’t going to help anyone at the moment.
Honestly the only good thing that could happen that might change this mess is if Israel’s public somehow elect a wise, left-wing leader and they find someone on the Palestinian side to negotiate with, and somehow Jewish extremists don’t assassinate whoever the leader is like last time and someone no Palestinian terrorist attacks happen that make Israelis elect barbaric leaders and ministers like the ones who are in charge now.
This book so not worth anything and totally unworkable stupid vision anyway. We live in a realist world, not this fairytale nonsense book.

This urgent book from Gaza calls for a consciousness change in a new period of unprecedented pressure on Palestinian culture, identity and future. If you're interested in or want to be aware about Palestine's historic-political contexualization, this book is for you.

Dr. Eid writes about the failures of the 1990's Oslo Accords (Oslo surrender) and offers readers a postmodern critique of the subsequent deals and agreements that have failed to address the basic rights and needs of Palestinians. His analysis draws on the work of Edward Said (as well as other important scholars) and makes critical comparisons between apartheid South Africa and occupied Palestine. He establishes the Palestinian cause as an anti-colonial struggle and is a strong proponent of the 'One State Solution'. Additionally, he argues that we are at a turning point, a moment marked by the "de-Osloizing' of Palestine. For Eid, Gaza is at the center of this process—Palestinians are no longer striving toward independence, they are demanding liberation.

Overall, this collection of essays offers important insights on the question of Palestine, particularly for those who want to learn more about the legacies of the Oslo Accords.

Thank you to NetGalley, Literary Press Group of Canada, Between the Lines, and Haidar Eid for the advanced readers copy!
