International Incident: Crown & Heart Book 1

Rate this book
A Queen swore her heart to duty alone. Can he be the exception to her rule?

Khara
When the people of Lytua elected me to be their Queen, I dedicated myself to serving them.

Little did I know how much I’d sacrifice personally for that honor.

The moment I ascended the throne, I became a prize. My crown and its influence are all men desire of me. I’m simply a means to an end. Their chance to become king.

Love is an impossibility for someone in my position.

I’ll never trust anyone with the secret yearnings of my heart. It’s safer that way.

Yet when architect Joshua Riddick mistakes me for someone else, I seize the opportunity to be myself, instead of merely a monarch to be conquered. Riddick is, in every way, the sexiest man I have ever met. And that makes him dangerous.

Riddick
When I get off on the wrong foot with the Queen’s feisty assistant, Khara, damage control is in order. I can’t risk tarnishing my firm’s reputation with bad PR.

I don’t have the patience to work for another useless royal with an overinflated ego. Been there, done that. No, thank you.

I’ll attend the interview to salvage the situation, then get back to designing architecture for people who aren’t oppressing others. I saw more than enough oppression growing up in foster care.

But this Khara’s brashness intrigues me. I don’t care how charming that island accent is, though, she’s still getting a piece of my mind.

Fans of Only for the Week and the Winston Isles Royals series will love International Incident. This is Book 1 in the Queen's Desire duet, as part of the Crown & Heart series, and ends with a cliffhanger. Book 2 is coming soon!

“I want to take you slow, Khara, but I don't think I can. I want you too damned much.”

International Incident was a sexy, satisfying, and intriguing story. I am a fan of books that include royalty and monarchs. In this case, Khara is the Queen of Lytua - a 32-year-old badass with a “badass.” She’s intelligent, secure in herself, and is a servant leader. The best part about Khara is that she’s a breast cancer survivor who unapologetically lives her best life. The author intertwines a strong storyline into a romance story and executes it beautifully. As a survivor, I wholeheartedly loved the representation and sympathized with the characters. Riddick is an architect with a story that shows his resilience. I loved everything about his character. He came from humble beginnings and used that to lead and mentor others. The story has a good flow, and the characters are memorable. There’s romance, on-page dating, and suspenseful elements. The best thing about this book is that Khara can take her “crown” off and experience some normalcy. Unfortunately, their entire relationship is a lie; you’ll have to read to find out how things turn out. I am eager for more! Great debut from this author.

International Incident is a captivating and intriguing read for all who likes a romantic story that features black love and the good old fashion gentleman.

International Incident is a story that highlights black curvy women whose broken can find love. The conflict between the characters were a misunderstanding, lies and assumption of people in certain positions and class. The story was one of complication that would soon have to be confronted if they wished to progress into something more than just dating.

Khara - the queen, was a wonderful character that I felt I could relate to in terms of her stance of relations and life. She was a strong woman. A woman simply wanting to be loved for herself, but had given up on love and relationship after being hurt by her ex. Riddick - the architect, though raised in a loveless home at first with abusive druggie parents, was blessed with people whom passed through his life and helped him. He found discipline and love in a foster mother who instilled values that tested his control when he met the woman he loved. Can Riddick & Khara make a go at their relationship, or will they find a quick lay within each other?

The author used the first pov to tell the story but from multiple characters. She used the pov to draw in the reader which painted an interesting view of the experiences and thoughts the character had.

The story began slowly with a sense of pity then onto some humourous moments which made the story a bit more easy to like.

The author did well with utilizing the right words to invoke the senses in which I as the reader could vividly imagine the scenes.

The author used a variety of complex sentences and made the story flow.

Set in the states, the characters each held their secrets and issues about relationships that left them on the edge to just enjoy brief flings. They spent time with each other by exploring around certain spots enjoying the bonding time.

My Perspective:
The romance of the story was interesting and pulled at you. It was lovely to see how caring each character can be towards each other, their reactions were welcomed. The author did a wonderful job fitting in her advocasy for breast cancer within the story as something the character had to deal with and survive. It was very sensitive and like that about the story. It's always nice to read about strong women that endured and grew stronger.

"Early detection and universal health coverage saved my life.”

Definitely recommend this book.

I did finish this book in less than 24 hours didn't want put down.

I should read everything on page before I became a ARC Reader. I am not going to take points off points for my mistakes and I was going disconnected this book, but I haven't disconnected a book yet and I didn't want start why I am new . I am not into Steamy books. I am going give honest review.

I like the Author is also social worker also

Now about the book I like the flow of this book and I like Khara even though she young queen, but she about her people and country and she do anything to protect it and herself. She had breast cancer and fought through it and won and she went university. Even her mom pass the Queen, but they electric and she won. She love children and color and she not dull person and she want be herself around people, but she couldn't until time came as good mistakes.

I love Khara team and the way they protect her from all harm and she can protect self also she taught by her team. I love them and their personality. I love how she want help people been trafficking and organized. Even through danger lurking in every connor you see and at some point then see other person and mind of villain of the book and the thought process.

Riddrick been through alot because his parents and been bully. He forster parent who love and care for him and he had positive in his life and went university and started a business and with his friend and his team is amazing. You see the love for people around him and their personality.

Khara and Riddrick he doesn't know she the Queen, but he think she the assisted
Assisted for the Queen. They may not start off right, after the apologies and they meet you can see chemistry between sexual tension, but not overwhelming. As story progress and the beautiful flow of it. They get point to their feelings and more. They are respectful to each other and also discuss they sex history and what want but they agree not to rush anything like they was thinking at first.

The flow is amazing is not rushing it naturally and organic over the top or too sexual at the moment. N

Now like I said before not big on Steamy part I listen to some of but skip parts also. The Steamy parts will keep you on your feet and even through they didn't have sex they had a foreplay.

When you found something happen to Khara and you end ready fight to found her also then you found who Villain of Story in you may or may not be surprisingly.
I am ready for 2nd book to found Khara.

“International Incident” by Nikki Davenport is an electrifying blend of romance and suspense, set against a geopolitical backdrop that captivates from the very first page. Davenport weaves a tale of love, deception, and betrayal with the skill of a seasoned storyteller, inviting readers into a world where the lines between duty and desire blur. Queen Khara Therin of Lytua, embattled and disillusioned with love, finds herself unexpectedly drawn to Joshua Riddick, an ex-military architect who shares her aversion to romantic entanglements. Their unexpected romance, born from a case of mistaken identity, is the beating heart of a story that spans continents and dives deep into the complexities of power and privilege.

However, lurking beneath the surface of their burgeoning relationship is a web of intrigue spun by Trina, a vengeful enemy with sights set on dethroning Khara. As the plot to undermine Khara’s reign unfolds, the queen and her unlikely ally find themselves ensnared in a dangerous game that threatens not only their love but their very lives.

Davenport masterfully balances the tender moments of romance with pulse-pounding action, crafting a narrative that is as thrilling as it is emotionally resonant. The chemistry between Khara and Riddick is palpable, their connection deepening with every shared secret and stolen kiss. Yet, it is the shadow of Trina’s conspiracy that propels the story forward, each twist and turn drawing the reader deeper into the labyrinthine politics of Lytua.

“International Incident” is more than a love story; it is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the enduring power of trust. Davenport’s characters are richly drawn, and their flaws and fears render them all the more relatable. As Khara and Riddick navigate the treacherous waters of international diplomacy and personal demons, they emerge not just as lovers but as warriors in their own right.

Nikki Davenport has crafted a novel that defies easy categorization, melding elements of romance, suspense, and political thriller into a cohesive and compelling whole. “International Incident” is a must-read for anyone who craves a story that is as thought-provoking as it is entertaining, a dazzling reminder of the lengths we will go to for love, for country, and for justice.

Every time I had to put this book down, I found myself thinking about the characters and wanting to pick it back up to live in their romance.

Nikki Davenport has done an amazing job of guiding her reader to care about Khara Therin as she navigates her job and meets Riddick. I felt like I was working on Khara’s team, rooting for her to truly enjoy this wonderful man who has come into her life.

Joshua Riddick!! And wow is he easy to root for! Nikki Davenport shows his strength in his vulnerable moments with Khara. Making me fall in love with Riddick.

The exciting twist on the Royal Romance is something that brings this book above the rest. Without spoiling it, Khara has power in her title as Queen in a way that I have never seen depicted before. And this twist gives so much value to Khara’s strength and character. Giving her levels that we don’t get in Royal stories.

It is not only their love story or depth in character that brings immense value to this book. Nikki Davenport portrays the worlds that Khara and Riddick grew up in, with her bright writing voice. As Riddick introduces his world to Khara, the reader is brought to the National Museum of African American History and Culture. As a white woman, I have read about the effect of this Museum portrayed through white voices. However, walking through this exhibit with Riddick as he watches Khara, opened a window to the importance of this exhibit and the truth of the history it holds. This is one example of many in International Incident that has had this effect on me and shows the importance of reading novels about black love written by black voices.

International Incident is wonderfully paced and beautifully written. I cannot wait until part two of the Queen's Heart duet, of the Destination: Lytua series, is released!

I don’t usually go for BMBW romance books, mainly because when I did previously give them a shot, I would get very wound up by the portrayal of black men as Neanderthals or thugs as if it’s far outside the realm of possibility to find decent black men.

This book ticks all the qualities of a romance story that matter to me - a classy heroine with standards, a decent and drop-dead gorgeous male love interest and a solid plot line. Plus, the central characters are thoroughly likeable. Riddick and Khara were very well-suited and complemented each other. Despite the fire raging between the two, at no time did Riddick try to force anything that made Khara uncomfortable. He was quite literally the type of man every woman deserves.

The addition of the conflict that saw Khara being the subject of a kidnapping plot served to add spice and thrill to this already delicious plot. I’m not one for too much suspense in a romance story. Luckily, the author weaves the suspense and intrigue into the story in a way that doesn’t hijack Riddick and Khara’s story.

This book also defies my dislike of many elements, including humour, that I often feel have no place in romance - unless they’re perfectly executed. I’m not sure if Ms Davenport did this by design, but I found the story funny in parts and really loved that the light comedic moments lent the story a sense of lightness that I enjoy in romance.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and can’t wait to see what book 2 brings for Riddick and Khara - hopefully, a solid HEA!

Well-written and well-edited. The main couple has chemistry but the storyline didn't hold my interest because I was expecting more interesting intrigue.

Excerpt:

Massaging her fingertips into where the muscles in the back of her neck were tightening up, Khara considered her predicament. She had long since learned how to say no to pushy matchmakers with grace. This situation with the Speaker was no different. It was a bit of an ongoing nuisance to correct the misconception about how Lytuan royalty worked. People’s eyes tended to glaze over when Khara explained that if she married while in office, her husband would be Consort, not king by default as many assumed. The same way her predecessor’s wife had never held the title of Queen. This concept just never seemed to resonate. Such odd ideas about royalty. And it wasn’t just in the States, it was nearly everywhere they went.

People were quick to assume that Khara must be in the market for a husband. The joke was on them though, for she had no intention of ever getting married. Not that she opposed marriage. Quite the contrary. Khara believed in love deeply and saw evidence of its existence and effects every day with her team. After she’d sworn her oath and ascended the throne, she’d become a prize. No longer a woman with normal needs and wants. It didn’t take long for Khara to recognize that her crown, and its influence, were what men desired now, not her. It was all about how she could improve someone else’s standing. That trade-off was one she hadn’t expected.

Humbling didn’t even begin to describe it.

Nikki Davenport has found a fan for life. Let me just get this out of the way. This book ends on a cliffhanger. I was so ready for some more and it ended. I will definitely be anxiously waiting for the next book. Khara Therin is the reigning Queen of the island kingdom of Lytua. She is currently in Washington State for Lytuan business and securing an architect for the new Lytuan Embassy. Joshua Riddick was her first choice. Their meeting was a bit unconventional because Joshua arrived early. Khara was not ready and Joshua assumed she was the Queen's assistant. He never anticipated actually meeting with the Queen.

Khara decided to roll with Riddick, Joshua's preferred name, thinking that she was the assistant rather than the actual Queen. Things were going well with only a few missteps along the way. Her security team was not happy because they had to be even more inconspicuous. Riddick and Khara were having fun getting to know each other. Khara was still hesitant to tell Riddick that she was in fact the Queen. Riddick had a very opinionated view of royals and made that view known. After a while, Khara was sure that he would leave her once he found out because she kept it a secret for so long. Riddick wanted to be with her but he did not really know who Khara was.

Khara also had someone who wanted her out of the way. They didn't want her dead, but they definitely wanted her to give up the throne. This person had worked their whole life for her husband to be sitting on the throne. Khara came in a took that person's hopes and dreams with one election. Her world her changed and it was all because of Khara. Khara would pay. Crazy, right? Crazy but good. I loved this book. I can't wait to see what happens next.

International Incident: Crown & Heart Book 1 by Nikki Davenport is a captivating start to the series, offering readers an engaging and well-crafted story. The novel centers around Khara, the 32-year-old Queen of Lytu, who is not only a powerful leader but also a breast cancer survivor. Davenport does a masterful job of portraying Khara as a relatable character—her resilience and inner strength truly speaks to the reader.

Told from multiple first-person perspectives, the novel dives deeply into the emotional lives of its characters, enriching the narrative with layers of complexity. Khara’s journey of balancing the demands of ruling a nation while navigating love with Riddick, her strong and steady love interest, is central to the plot. The slow-burning romance between them is well-developed, leaving readers invested in their relationship.

The pacing of the story works well, balancing character development with plot progression. Though the romance builds gradually, it never feels rushed, and Davenport’s sophisticated writing style gives the story a sense of grace and elegance that elevates it above the usual tropes of the genre.

Although MF romance isn't my usual genre, International Incident stood out for its depth and character-driven storytelling. Davenport’s writing makes this a series to watch, and I’m eager to see how the storyline and characters evolve in the upcoming books. I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a thoughtful and emotionally rich romance.

Royal Romance and Intrigue

International Incident by Nikki Davenport is so well-written that the characters practically leap off the page. The plot surrounds Khara, the beautiful black Queen of Lytua, who is in the United States for diplomatic duties. When she has an appointment with an architect, Riddick, a candidate for a design project for her country, he mistakes her for the Queen’s assistant. This once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to step outside the royal confines and live a normal life is too tempting to resist. For the first time in her adult life, a man sees Khara as an approachable woman, not the untouchable Queen of Lytua. She enjoys their verbal sparring, romantic dates, and the undercurrent of excitement that runs through each of them when they meet. Neither understands the intense attraction they feel, but it is overwhelming and both want to take their time to see where it leads. Eventually, as Khara and Riddick draw closer, it becomes more difficult for her to maintain the charade. Khara is afraid her true identity may change everything, and she reluctantly continues to play the part until a frightening incident reveals her true identity. This debut novel has thrills, danger, and a heat level between the couple that scorches the page. I highly recommend it.

The premise of this story: a queen from a small Caribbean country enters a no-strings-attached fling with an architect but keeps her royalty a secret as their relationship grows and they question how much they want and whether they are willing to walk away in the end.

My reaction to this story: I fucking loved it. I’ve been wanting a romance like this FORVER and Ms. Davenport delivered. The characters were so thoroughly fleshed out. I understood their motives and their choices and it didn’t muddle any of the story. I believed Khara and Riddick could love.

The only thing is I wish there was more description towards the end (that cliffhanger??? I need the second book ASAP). But the story was written well, paced well, and man did it tease me well. The build up between Khara and Riddick’s relationship. . . Let’s just say I can’t wait for the top to blow.

If I don’t get the second book soon, Nikki Davenport better watch out before I pull a Trina lol (jokes).

I am voluntarily leaving a review after receiving an ARC from Hidden Gems.

It was good. It was to see a Royal Romance that the Royal person was not from Europe but another part of the world. Riddick is an American architect who had a humble beginning. He is an orphan who was raised in the foster care system until he was adopted. He is constantly giving back to his community by mentoring a teenage boy, volunteering, and other things. His company was asked to put in a bid to build a new Embassy for Lyuta. When he met with Khara, he did not know she was the Queen. Khara found it refreshing that Riddick did not know who she was. Khara has been used to men who were after her status. They were both attracted to each other. At the end of their meeting, Riddick asked Khara to dinner. They developed a relationship based on friendship and respect.

The only issue I had with this book was that it ends in a cliffhanger, and I have to wait a year yo find out what happens.

This is one of my favorite tropes. I absolutely love royal romance. Warning this story does have a cliffhanger but I also love those as well.
An incredible first part to this series.
Khara is the queen of a small island called Lytuan. Her formal name is Queen Liliana. Currently away from her homeland and in the USA, she meets and falls for a contractor who is up for designing a local office.
Riddick is a handsome man living his life day to day the best he can. Taking care of his adoptive mother and living it up.
These two meet while going over the details of a building contract. Though Khara fails to mention she's the queen when conversing with this good looking man.
A fun, exciting, sexy story follows while leaving us wanting more when a bitter woman does the unthinkable. Having the Queen kidnapped during an exclusive event.
I can't wait to find out what happens next. This is such an interesting story.

I received a free copy of this book from the author and have chosen to leave a review. It is a well done tale of romance between a black couple, Khara and Joshua. It is well written grammatically with few if any errors that I noted. However, a supposedly smart man, I had trouble believing he could not have figured it out sooner who she was, or at least been suspicious. That element could have been handled a lot better to make it more believable.
Nonetheless, as a romance (not my favorite genre) it was well done and intriguing. Although, Khara is kidnapped before she can tell Joshua who she really is. The major flaw is the cliffhanger and if I want to know how it ends, I have to wait for the next book. I despise these manipulative endings a book. If you liked the book, you almost have to buy the next one. I won't for that reason.

This romance offers a story that encompasses all the essential elements: a captivating chemistry between the characters, a smart and sophisticated heroine, and a charismatic male love interest who is simply irresistible.

The dynamic between Riddick and Khara is truly enchanting, and their connection sparks with intensity throughout.

The gripping kidnapping plot adds a thrilling dimension to the story, that kept me on the edge of my seat.

Moreover, the writing is skillfully executed, striking a balance between humor, suspense and storytelling, that enhanced the overall narrative.

I highly recommend immersing yourself in this captivating book; it's a worthwhile read that shouldn't be missed. I look forward to book 2!

A case of mistaken identity leads to an unconventional romance for Khara and Riddick… Warning: Cliffhanger Ending!

Khara is strong, determined, and knows just what she wants. Riddick is talented and charming yet guarded. She isn’t who he thinks she is, and he has a few secrets of his own. So when this would-be power couple begins to date, what could go wrong?

For this to be this author’s first book, I was pleasantly surprised! I had to force myself to slow down to catch every detail. Nikki Davenport does a fantastic job of telling Khara and Riddick’s story, while addressing real issues like dealing with cancer, youth in foster care, and more.

Give this book a read, you won't be disappointed. I’m already eagerly awaiting the second book! Brava, Nikki!

International Incident is the first book in the Destination Lytua series. From the beginning the storyline is compelling and engaging as the author undertook inventing an entire country and culture.

Having the head of the nation be a young woman made it even more interesting. Khara's intelligence and diplomatic skills shine throughout the book, as does Josh's compassion and strength of character. Unfortunately, there is a huge lie that threatens to tear down all of the wonderful feelings they have for one another.

This book is very much a slow build kind of story, but the characters and storyline full of romance, intrigue, a nefarious plot, and a heart wrenching cliffhanger keep you reading.

The writing is excellent, and the characters are likable. I wished for them to find a way to be together. They had a well-grounded backstory, which I enjoyed.
However, so did EVERY side character. I didn't care about the backstory and love life of every one of her team members, their kids, friends, and family. This was way too much, and I lost interest. Additionally, I don't have to know what they were saying sentence by sentence for their three-hour date. That was too much detail.
Knowing that this book ends in a cliffhanger and there would be a second book, I stopped reading. For me, this story could have been shortened to one book instead of two, focusing on the main story with less detail.

Slow Burn Romance. Rounded up from 3.5 Stars

I like the couple, Khara and Riddick. They're well suited to one another. The supporting cast is sweet and interesting. The storyline of a queen playing commoner to get the guy was fun at first. Unfortunately, it dragged in the middle, so much I almost DNF'd. I even put it aside and read other books before finishing. The story picked up the pace towards the end, then fell of the cliff...literally. It's a cliffhanger--which I knew going in. I'm not upset, but I'm not sure I want to read another 300+ book to get the conclusion to their love story.

While I'm not enthralled with this story, I'm not opposed to reading another of this author's works.

Disclosure: I received a free copy of the book from BookSirens and the author.

I'm here for unapologetic Black-on-Black wealth, Black-on-Black love, Black-on-Black joy, yes, give me it all! Khara is a whole entire vibe, a queen in every sense of the word. And Joshua is *drools, wipes mouth* smart, gorgeous, mysterious... The plot is layered and engaging and the pacing is spot on; I devoured this book fast. It's got the tension, danger, chemistry... For once it was me that 'released the breath I didn't realise I was holding' at the end because whew! All that's missing is book 2. I need it ASAP!!!!

Thanks to the writer for allowing me to read an early copy, which I have chosen to review.

International Incident delivers steamy romance and more!!!

Nikk Davenport has created well-rounded leads: Khara Therin (Queen of a small Caribbean nation) and Josh Riddick (an American architect), who are each in their own ways strong, funny, self-confident, sexy, altruistic, and just can’t keep their hands off each other!

A case of mistaken identity and a kidnapping plot complicate things for Karah and Riddick, who have each sworn to never fall in love again.

The story has it all - great pacing, passion, surprising twists, characters you fall in love with, and an ending that will leave you on the edge of your seat! Book 2 can’t arrive fast enough!!!!

I received this copy as an arc for my honest review...
character development 3.5/5 spice 1/5 plot 4/5 overall rating 3.5/5
Going into this book I was kind of afraid. Cute romance books aren't really my vibe, but Nikki Davenport did a good job with this one. I liked all the characters and the story was cute. I wish Trina's antics had been more intertwined into the story from the bringing. She was unhinged and I was here for it! The slow burn was very slow, but Riddick's dirty talk toward the end let me now he definitely knew what he was doing, but he just needed to be more assertive. I will say that I wish there had been more spice, but I think that about all books! Overall a fun read.

While I love romance, at my age, I'm no longer into romances. That is until I read, International Incident. I'm going to try to do this without spoilers, so here goes. The author gave us beautifully drawn characters in Khara and Riddick. Sympathetic but with flaws, they are intelligent, complex, and real. You'll want to get to know them personally. The story itself is compelling, with twists and turns, as well as a peek into the social opportunities available in our nation's Capitol. But let's not forget about the "Romance." It starts sweet and soon becomes hot.
Do yourself a favor. Buy this book, NOW! You won't regret it.

As she and Josh get close so does the danger. Will they survive to see where their relationship takes them.

A Simmering Romance

Riddick and Khara make perfect sense. A bossy, busy, sweetheart and her no-nonsense, take-charge beau who's there to shake things up. I loved how weepingly romantic their story is, because Riddick goes above and beyond to show Khara he wants her, even from the very beginning when he turned down the job. Now the ending had me 350 hot and Trina is absolutely bonkers, but I'd recommend this to anyone who loves a good slow burn!

Oooh did I have a time reading this book!!! First of all Khara is a literal queen and she doesn’t disappoint. If you are looking for a strong female character… you came to the right place. Enter Riddick and he is charismatic and loves that girl just right. The twists and turns kept it exciting but the love was burning hot!!!! Go read it.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. It is a well spun tale of romance between Khara and Joshua. However Khara is kidnapped before she can tell Joshua who she really is. There is betrayal yet to be revealed. The only flaw is the cliffhanger waiting for the next book for answers.

This is the first book I've read written by Nikki Davenport; I can’t wait to read more of her books.

This is the first book in the Destination: Lytua Series; it is a stand-alone book. The story is about Khara & Joshua.

Mixed feelings about this one. There were parts I liked and was interested to continue reading but then parts I didn’t like and somewhat lost interest. I did want to know how it ends but there’s a second book coming soon so hopefully I can find out then how it ends. A decent read but some of it just felt draggy to me.
