Perverse City

A Dance Macabre

Rate this book
Welcome to the city of Pravitia.

Home to the wicked, depraved, and perverse. Built upon the urges of our deviant desires, and our twisted cravings. Every soul fated to this damned city worships at our altars.

Puppets to our fatalistic whims.

Six bloodlines, devoted to our darkest proclivities, destined to rule the city in our image, and in our name. Six families bound to us in exchange for absolute dominion and glory.

But even gods have favorites and the time has come to usher in a new epoch.

Mercy Crèvecoeur and Wolfgang Vainglory have always been enemies, fueled by centuries-old family quarrels. Their hatred runs deep and if we didn’t prohibit it; they’d have already attempted to kill one another.

But as much as they want to fight it, even the powerful can’t escape fate.

While they both believe the city of Pravitia is their birthright and will go to great lengths to gain control, their arrogance and thirst for power will lead them directly on the path of our choosing.

To claim their rightful place as rulers of Pravitia, they will need to become a unified team.

But what happens when the lines between hate and obsession begin to blur? And to satiate their lustful desires a divine law must be broken.

Is this dangerous hunger worth each other’s demise?

And when will they realize that they have been our puppets all along?

*A Dance Macabre is an enemies to lovers, forbidden romance with a magical realism twist. It is the first book in the Perverse City series and has a guaranteed HEA. While all books are standalones, the series must be read in order. It has mature situations and themes which may be considered triggers for some. Reader discretion is advised.*

I thoroughly enjoyed how unique this was! Tbh all of Naomi’s books so far have been a refreshing addition to the dark romance genre, and this one is no different. This world however, is their darkest and most unhinged yet. AND GUESS WHAT I LOVED IT. The world itself is incredibly unique and I began the book initially confused but in the best way because I was fully immersed and NEEDED ANSWERS.

Needless to say if you like the idea of a gothic, dark, paranormal-ish, super spicy, romance, with an FMC who stabs first and asks questions later, read this!

*huge thanks to GoodGirls PR and the author for the arc*

“But does it matter? When now even our gods would fail to keep me away from her.”

5/5 2.5/5 🌶️

This book made me want to blast “Like a Prayer” by Madonna from every speaker I own. I absolutely adored it! I didn't want it to end — I was having the best time with every page. The characters in this book are delightfully OTT, but our two mcs, Mercy and Wolfgang, were simply divine to read about!

I’m a big fan of the "boy obsessed" trope, but when you pair it with a "girl obsessed" trope and mix in a seriously intense enemies-to-lovers dynamic , you get pure magic! That’s exactly what Naomi achieved in this book. I devoured all 326 pages and was left hungry for more!

The book is set in a surreal universe, teetering on the edge of fantasy without fully diving in, which was a refreshing and new experience for me. I thoroughly enjoyed exploring this unique world and uncovering all its secrets. I’m especially intrigued by the Gods who effortlessly pull the strings behind the scenes.

Usually, this is the part where I’d say the main characters were the highlight of the book, but honestly, everything about this book contributed to making it incredible!

Wolfgang and Mercy were such fascinating characters—morally gray, wildly OTT, and locked in a fierce battle with each other. But oh my god, their chemistry was off the charts, building into a magnificent crescendo ! Mercy is such a badass FMC; I would totally fall to my knees for her. And Wolfgang? He’s hot AF, but what truly made me fall for him was his obsessive passion and hunger for Mercy. This pair was perfection—villainous and obsessed. What’s not to love?

I can’t wait for the next books in the series. I have a feeling no one can top Mercy and Wolfgang, but I’m excited to see what’s in store!

Did I like it? Oh yes. Loved it!
Would I reread it? Yes!

Short chapters, morally black main characters, forbidden romance, fast paced!!

This was an eaaaaasy dark and spicy read with touches of magic. Go into it knowing that the main characters are not redeemable, they are morally black, and stay that way. If you’re looking for a dark palette cleanser, this is a good one!

It's a huge pet peeve of mine when reviews say "check trigger warnings" instead of sharing them, especially if the TWs are not posted on the author's website or in the book description. I love that authors are embracing including TWs in the beginning of the book...BUT that means readers need to have the book before they can see them. Anyway, I took a look and here are the trigger warnings listed on by the author in the beginning of the book - everything is a direct quote:

"Gore, maiming, cremation, dismemberment, decapitation, cheeky non-con drugs (trust me they'll be happy about it in the end), oppressive ruling body, hunting humans for sport, ritual sacrifice, public defilement of a corpse (non-sexual), public executions, murder, blood (lots of it), attempted drowning, dubious consent, reverse glory hole, impact play, blood play, knife play, exhibitionism, anonymous sex, bondage"

Hope this helps others like me who were looking for specifics prior to deciding whether or not to read it!

Pravitia is a city that's founded on divulging in your darkest sins and desires. Sex, drugs, excess, murder, torture. You name it, Pravitia has it. This book is deliciously dark.. Not at all for the faint of heart.

"I don't need you to explain to me in words how watching me kill him made you feel, I hiss into her skin. "Considering how you're currently fucking my lap, you sick little fuck." 🫢🫣

I enjoyed this book. It didn't feel like I'd read this story 100 times over. Let's face it, some stories feel similar after reading a lot of the same genre. Life long fueds and hatred run deep.

This book had lots of stuff I love! Short chapters & dual POV. Morally black, antihero MMC and FMC. The ones who get it get it. When both chachters are unhinged, the spice be spicingggg. I'll definitely be giving Gemini's book a read when it's finished 😊

okay WOW! 4.75 stars for this ARC because i loved loved LOVED it, but there were some things (to me) that didn’t sit right so there MIGHT be some spoilers.

FIRST OF ALL…. Mercy. I love you, you can do nothing wrong in my eyes 😘🫰🏻🫶🏻 you murdering little badass you. absolute perfection.

but Wolfgang…..you won me over in the end but boy were you pissing me off the majority of the book. he gave me frat boy vibes for the first half 😅😅😅 like i understand that he is the servant for the god of idolatry and worship but my guy is soooo full of himself 😂😂😂 i mean… his last name IS Vainglory so it’s to be expected. but when he said that he looked at Mercy’s reflection in the mirror before his own 😭😭😭😭😭😭 fuck he got me.

now this might be a spoiler bit but it has to be mentioned in my review. so look away if you don’t want safety details!

there is a divine law that the six families can’t fornicate so that is the forbidden aspect of this, which okay that’s fine HOWEVER there is a scene where Wolfgang is at a supper club with his friend (another member of one of the six ruling families) and his friend is sitting at a table and there is a person under that table blowing him. his friend finishes….and then immediately offers the mouth to Wolfgang who thinks oh i don’t accept just anyone and then looks under the table and says 🤷🏻‍♀️ they will do AND GETS A BLOW JOB. like it’s early in the book, the main characters HATE each other. like Mercy has already tried to kill Wolfgang but she can’t because it’s another divine law 🫣, but still. i personally don’t think it adds anything to the story especially because we don’t even know if he finishes….its just like he has to control the head to regain composure and then they go about their conversation and the chapter ends 😑😑😑😑

and there is no other person drama at all so like why include it 😅 but that’s just a ME thing and i got over it pretty quickly because he does fall first and the families being forbidden to bone each other really helped it make more sense i guess…but i still hated it 😂

BUT ANYWAY i loved this so much. i can’t wait to read the rest of the series. especially Tinny even if her love interest is also the king of getting blow jobs 😅😅😅😅

a million thanks to GoodGirlPR and Naomi for this arc 🥰🥰

07/2025: ALC REREAD/LISTEN- I think I loved this more as an audio book than I did with my eyeballs the first time. Mercy and Wolfgang are deadly and vicious amd ridiculous and amazing.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect with this one because I knew it would be a complete 180 from the last novel I read but this author but to say I was pleasantly surprised would be an understatement. 🩸

This was absolutely nothing like anything I have ever read in the very best way. The way Naomi writes literally feels like the story is being injected into my brain. I’m able to fully picture and feel like I’m living the story out in my own world inside my head. The story and plot line as well as the character and world building were completely unmatched in a magical realism tale of a centuries old feud between “founding families” of sorts. Each family has their own magical power/influence (is this the right term?). As well as each family is eligible for rule of the city once every 19 years. 🏰

Mercy and Wolfgang are both heirs to the city of Pravitia. As their ancestors before them, they both have basically been born to hate each other and think that will never change. Until it does. This was true enemies to lovers and villain x villain. I don’t really know how to explain it other than I was transported to another realm and while absolutely enthralling it was also brutal and filled with chaos, calamity and death. 🔪

I love the vast differences and also similarities between the two main characters. Mercy is an orphan, forced to take what she wants and make no apologies for what she has to do to achieve it and survive. Wolfgang on the other hand is an idolized figure and doesn’t know what to do when challenged with someone like Mercy. Seeing these two slowly dance around each other until their attraction and inevitable fate was sealed was phenomenally written and I enjoyed every second of it.

I was really hoping there would be more to this book that a singular novel so hearing that the elusive Gemini is up next has been chomping at the bit. Cannot wait to see whats next in this twisted world Naomi has created 🔥
Thank you so much to Naomi + good girls pr for the opportunity for this ARC for review! 🖤

simply phenomenal. i haven’t read a dark romance in so long and this was surprisingly so refreshing and reminded me of everything i love about dark romance. there’s mysticism and gods…it’s a world that dark and unhinged.

the main characters made me sickkkkkkk but in the best way. they’re both morally black and both had me literally giggling. a true enemies to lovers…with such hatred for each other but at the same time this controllable insatiable need for the other. both are selfish…serve their own gods, but to see them being so uncomfy with the concept of loving someone else other than one self was SATISFYING.

i can’t wait to read the rest of this series and where it will go next!

“i am chained to you for all of eternity. take my soul into yours and ruin me evermore.”

i've never read naomi loud before, but i'm glad i stepped out of my comfort zone and picked this book as an introduction to their work because from the little i know about them, they are the embodiment of a dance macabre. this is their magnum opus.

the addams family meets the crow with a hint of pagan folklore; this was a true enemies to lovers, the juxtaposition between the hall of mirrors and the cemetery is an essay to the contrast of their characterization, idolatry and death, opposites attracting. they claimed again and again each other’s deaths as their own, tiptoeing the line between murder as a slow burning foreplay and falling deeper into a madness that not even death could assuage. and death and blood were at the very marrow of their bond, in an almost vampiric sense; how the conduit of death was enthralled watching her enemy kill, as much as he was mesmerized to witness her worshipping ritual, but above all the imagery of licking and wanting to bathe in their lover's blood, the life force running through their veins as much as the madness they reveled in, culminating in the symbol of their vows. i could die. and he built her a crematorium. what in the gomez and morticia addams love language is that? romance isn't dead. romance is death.

* i was sent an arc by good girls pr in exchange for a honest review

This was an absolute masterpiece. I have quite literally never read anything like it. If you love TRUE enemies to lovers, this is a must read. The lyrical prose in Naomi’s writing is so incredibly captivating. The way these two insult eachother throughout the entirety of this book had me cackling and begging for more. Mercy and Wolfgang are, no joke, one of my absolute fave book couples. I am beyond obsessed with them. Their hatred and utter distain for eachother was so palpable. Naomi is a forever auto buy author, and this book just solidifies my love for her and her storytelling. I quite literally cannot wait for more of this series

3.5⭐️ this rating is based more on vibes bc the vibes and premise were immaculate! I loved the relationship dynamics between the MCs it was refreshing to read a TRUE hate to love. The spicy scenes were CHEFS KISS!! Buuuut the way the story unfolded and the lack of world building left me at times confused and wanting more. The pacing was off it felt way too rushed at times. The paranormal/magical aspects were really interesting and unique but we learned about them so late into the book for no reason. I had a really good time reading it and I’m looking forward to the next one!

Lush and full of hate sex. The primal obsession was magnificent.

So I read books 95% based on cover and title and I totally thought this was going to be a Gothic vampire dark romance and in many ways, it was, minus the vampires (sad).

However, there is a mysticism involved that unveils over time, though heavier show than tell. While this left a little disoriented and the beginning feeling a bit slow, I found myself more interested in the lore as I learned about it.

Mercy is an absolute black cat, emotionally skittish, and only finds moments of peace in delivering humans to their death. Wolfgang is a self-absorbed egomaniac who enjoys lording over low-born humans. Their houses have a deep history of violent rivalry and as the time nears for one in their peerage to ascend to rule, someone throws a dagger into the plans and changes the course of history.

The focus of this book was on the relationship development between these sworn enemies in forced proximity, though there are deeper back stories and an underlying sense of unease in the greater world that I'll be interested to explore in future installments.

🎙Narrated by: Raven Rose & Caden Heart 🎙

🖤☠️ Duet Narration ☠️🖤

Let me just start by saying Raven and Caden did am absolutely AH-MAZING job voicing these characters and giving them so much life!! Naomi made the best choice in bringing these two to the table!!

This gave me all the vibes I didn't know I had been craving in a dark romance book! Naomi had such a way with her words and bringing them into this world just blew my mind! Her lyrical prose truly brought me to a differently world!

This world was one I never expected but now I need to be back there ASAP! This world is one that I definitely want to be in over and over again!

Mercy by name doesn't give mercy in any kind of way. She is sure to make sure that she gets what she wants in the aay that she wants it. She doesn't care what it takes, but she will get it.

Wolfgang is one to carry himself with a certain air that you can't mistake for anything other than confidence. He has quickly became one of my fave dark characters that I have read and I cannot wait to see what else he brings to this storyline.

There two had so much disdain and tension that was so palpable that you could cut it with a butter knife. The banter that these two shared was nothing short of magnificent! I cackled and kicked my legs throughout this story!

I absolutely cannot wait for the next installment!

I really wanted to like this. Truly. But I just couldn't get into it. The plot was actually really interesting. It was different and something I hadn't really read before. But it was confusing a lot of the time. I feel like the beginning didn't give a really good set up, or explanation. And I kept having to go back and reread to understand what was happening and how the world worked.

I did like the aspect that this book really felt like a true enemies to lovers. The FMC and MMC really hated each other and truly wanted to unalive each other in the beginning. But I don't really like or connect with either character. The MMC just seemed super conceited (yes I know that was part of his thing) and was just not redeemable. The FMC was interesting and I liked her strength and power, but I just didn't like her.

I feel like the relationship and plot was just, there. Like nothing about it really got me invested, had me rooting for the characters, and the whole gods aspect felt very anticlimactic.

The spice was decent. There was definitely some chemistry between the characters and we got pretty decent smut.

But in the end, this was a miss for me. It had potential but just didn't pay off.

This book was deliciously dark, bloody and just plain macabre. I went in completely blind, literally just going by the cover, didn't even read a blurb about what it was about and oh my gods, am I glad I did. The poetry, the blood, the mythology in this was everything my little dark heart loves. Definitely in my top favorite reads of this year.

“My terrible demise.”
“Your downfall,”

This was WILD and honestly quite addictive.

Now these characters are morally black and I literally couldn’t put this books down. It was fun, it was violent, and spicy as hell.

Okay, there was pretty much no plot going on but I was too addicted to the insanity that was happening to care. Like when I say violence was to happen, I mean it.

We have the 6 heirs, serving the gods. Our two main characters are heirs that have been in a family fued for decades. Then you know how it goes…SEXUAL TENSIONNNN

Now I need to go read the next book because you’re telling there is more?!?

VA TAIP reikia rašyt enemies to lovers!!!!! Labai, labai, labai, labai patiko 😭💖.

This book hit me in the mouth and then bent me over into shark-infested water, if ya know what I mean.

They really fucking hate each other, and at no point do they stop hating each other. I was absolutely gagged. This would have been five fucking stars if the writing did not feel so juvenile. Compelling characters, compelling world, violent, beautiful, miserable, just wish the writing had been up to par.

This would have been so lovely in the third person.

This book was SO FREAKING GOOD!!! By the 65% mark, I was already sure that it would not only be a 5-star read for me, but that it would become a favorite for the year 😩 From what I gather, the inclusion of gothic and paranormal elements was something new for this author, and personally, I think they did such a wonderful job balancing the creepy, sinister with a fun (and spicy) romance.

Our mc’s, Mercy and Wolfgang, were sexy and villainous and 50-shades of morally black lmfao. Mercy is our wicked shadow in the night, a handmaiden of Death. She’s been on her own for years and power is all she’s ever craved (until now 😏 heheh). And Wolfgang’s vanity is rivaled only by his hedonism. He’s a pampered prince with an entitlement to match. Their chemistry was scorching!!! Omfg.

The back and forth banter, the visceral hatred they struggled with, my lord. I was panting like a dog over them. While their relationship certainly started as a physical attraction (like for real these two were pining), the emotional connection that they developed was lovely. Both are such strong personalities, born to rule and be feared, and seeing them come to a compromise rather than risk loosing the other had my heart melting 🥰 Instead of dulling or hiding their depravity, they egged each other and invited in the darkness. Oh and can I just say, the ball gag ?! 🤌🏼🤌🏼

This story set up such a mysterious and fun world for us to explore & Im excited to learn more about the other ruling houses and their role to play in book two.

Thank you to Good Girls PR and Naomi Loud for the eARC.

What can I say, Naomi has done it again. She truly never disappoints which is why is one of my fav authors. ADM is a delicious dark, gothic, true enemies to lovers romance based in the city of Pravitia, run by six ruling families. This book was so unique and refreshing, something so new to me and like nothing I’ve read before! When I say these characters truly hate each other, it’s the realest enemies romance out there, and it turns into such a beautiful obsession. ADM is so boujee (Wolfie boy), filled with hilarious banter, insults as love language, found family. I will say I struggled a little bit in the beginning with the world building and trying to understand, but my faith never waivered in Naomi and she delivered with this one. I love this world and can’t wait to see more of it!

What to expect:
morally black mmc AND fmc
TRUE enemies to lovers
forced proximity
fated mates
magical realism
murder as foreplay

These characters will forever be imbedded in my mind. A dance macabre is a fantasy dark romance similar to butcher and blackbird. Such torturous and gruesome deaths Wolfgang and Mercy participate in.

I do truly believe Mercy was the grumpier morally grey character in this one rather than Wolfgang. They both hated the HELL out of each other. The attempted assignations and the murdering plots somehow slowly but quickly turned into lust and full of emotions.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dark romance book my Naomi.

It's going to be a yes from me. I did an ALC of this and it was luuuuuush. Hot, shocking, and full of 'omg they did what again?' moments.

This was dark, sexy, dangerous. I adored the moments of lore with the gods and the ways we worship them. Our main couple was bold, independent, and did I mention dangerous???

I think I might indulge in a re-read. I'll report back if anything changes, but the way I see it I can't get to book two fast enough.

ALC Review: A Dance Macabre
Stars: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Spice: 🌶️🌶️🌶️

A Dance Macabre by Naomi Loud throws you straight into the sinful city of Pravitia, where gods pull the strings and powerful families fight for control. Mercy and Wolfgang? Total enemies-to-lovers energy—with years of hatred, fiery tension, and just the right amount of forbidden chemistry.

The story takes some unexpected turns (in a good way), and while the world-building could’ve used a bit more context to really ground the reader, the overall vibe is dark and delicious. The romance brings the spice, though it’s softer than you’d expect given the setting—which actually worked surprisingly well.

The audiobook narration was solid, but at times the tone didn’t quite match the intensity of the story. Still, if you’re into dark romantasy with gods, power plays, and slow-burning obsession, this one’s worth the ride.

Releases 7/17! Thank you to @bluenoseaudio and @naomi.loud for providing me with an ALC to review!

I was extremely excited to get an e-ARC of this book, especially as I hadn’t read anything by this author before. I’ve gathered that this is the darkest novel that she’s written and it was done extremely well.

The main characters, Mercy and Wolfgang, are both morally black villains in this book which is a dark true enemies to lovers trope with lots of hate. Despite their darkness and violent tendencies you end up falling in love with them, especially as the story progresses.

This book was a slow burn with lots of tension but definitely worth a read and doesn’t disappoint. It certainly has Gothic and Addams Family vibes.

I can’t wait for book 2 and to read more about the city of Pravitia and its depravities 🖤
