Mark Waid
3,263 books1,351 followersMark Waid is an American comic book writer widely known for shaping modern superhero storytelling through influential runs on major characters at both DC Comics and Marvel Comics. Raised in Alabama, he developed an early fascination with comic books, particularly classic stories featuring the Legion of Super-Heroes, whose imaginative scope and sense of legacy would later inform his own writing. He first entered the comics industry during the mid 1980s as an editor and writer for the fan magazine Amazing Heroes, before publishing his first professional comic story in Action Comics. Soon afterward he joined DC Comics as an editor, contributing to numerous titles and helping shape projects across the company. After leaving editorial work to focus on writing, Waid gained widespread recognition with his long run on The Flash, where he expanded the mythology of the character and co-created the youthful speedster Impulse. His reputation grew further with the celebrated graphic novel Kingdom Come, created with artist Alex Ross, which imagined a future DC Universe shaped by generational conflict among superheroes. Over the years he has written many prominent series, including Captain America, Fantastic Four, Daredevil, and Superman: Birthright, bringing a balance of optimism, character depth, and respect for comic book history to each project. Waid has also collaborated with notable artists and writers on major ensemble titles such as Justice League and Avengers, while contributing ideas that helped clarify complex continuity within shared superhero universes. Beyond mainstream superhero work, he has supported creator owned projects and experimental publishing models, including the acclaimed series Irredeemable and Incorruptible, which explored moral ambiguity within the superhero genre. He later took on editorial leadership roles at Boom Studios, guiding creative direction while continuing to write extensively. In subsequent years he expanded his involvement in publishing and digital storytelling, helping launch online comics initiatives and advocating for new distribution methods for creators. His work has earned numerous industry awards, including Eisner and Harvey honors, reflecting both critical acclaim and enduring popularity among readers. Throughout his career Waid has remained a passionate student of comic book history, drawing on decades of storytelling tradition while continually encouraging innovation within the medium. His influence extends across generations of readers and creators, and his stories continue to shape the evolving language of superhero comics around the world today through enduring characters imaginative narratives and thoughtful reinventions of familiar myths within popular culture and modern graphic storytelling traditions.

I must say that this volume was a pleasant surprise. Mark Waid does a good job with a story that could have been a mess. But the story holds up through the test of time and George Perez's art also looks quite decent.
So "Brave and Bold" is supposed to be a team-up sort of story. It starts with a dead man that ends up being multiple dead men, but the mystery deeps when its the same dead man. Batman and Green lantern decide to try and figure out who is behind this.
It leads to some time traveling villains who have stolen the book of Destiny. Now, this is the only part I had a small quibble with. Destiny is one of the Endless (from Sandman stories) and is a Cosmic level entity, so I found it hard to believe some random asses managed to steal his book. But, that minor plot point aside I enjoyed this tale.
Featuring a diverse cast of characters from Supergirl and Lobo (this was a pretty good Lobo, considering most of Lobo's comics are utter shit) to the Legion of Superheroes. The adventures span entire galaxies and timelines. The Fatal Five are also a good villainous group that is thrown into this story.
With so many different permutations, the chances for this story going off the rails was high. But mark Waid does a good job of delivering a fun and adventurous tale with some pretty good humor thrown in. it worked surprisingly well and I enjoyed this book. Perez's art style works well and is actually pretty good. If you like a grand adventure throughout various times and galaxies featuring a large cast of heroes-then you will appreciate this story.

Well... this was a real funny rollercoasting guided tour of the DC Universe by Waid/Pérez ultimate dream-team, a fantastic duo making comics just for the sake of making them, and a perfect starting point for new readers (like this old Marvel Zombie) introducing with semplicity tons of characters.

Loved the storyline, an amazing mix of superheroes, sci-fi, time-travel and mistery, and the Silver Age vibe: when comics were just fun, heroes were flying around saving worlds, respecting themselves and joining forces quickly to save the day.
Waid is a Maestro of inter-character dialogue writing, George Pérez's hyper-detailed artworks were just over the top, and Supergirl's team-up with Green Lantern and Lobo made me laugh to tears so much that I'm just going to re-read this graphic novel as soon as I've done with this review.

This is not a must read, but it was still fun! It has that Saturday morning cartoon kind of feel to it. You know, just one big adventure story without all the angst and emotional undertones. It's also something that someone with little to no knowledge of DC characters could read and enjoy.

Good! I may not like everything Mark Waid writes, but I got to give it to him, the man knows how to write good dialogue between characters! So the story here is Green Lantern is flying through space when he stumbles upon a dead human body floating in space; so he calls to Batman to help, they look into it and the story goes from a murder mystery to a Cosmic adventure! Like I said earlier, the dialogue between characters is just so good, its what I liked so much about JLA: Year One, where the dialogue between characters feels so organic and real! Artwork by George Pérez was also a nice treat in this! The story flows pretty well for the most part, I liked how it was a mystery story for the first chunk of it, but it did start to drag on a bit towards the end, luckily it ended before it out stayed its welcome. There are a lot of characters in this one book, throughout the story we have different paring ups, which again work well with the good dialogue; it does get a bit overwhelming though with the large ensemble. I mean we have Batman, Green Lantern, Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Lobo, which all worked well; but the you get The Legion of Super Heroes, Adam Strange etc... and it starts to get a bit too much, but again it ends before it can get too convoluted. In the end, this was a fun mystery/cosmic adventure!

I'm a big fan of George Perez's art, and I believe he assisted with the plotting.
I really liked this run, both for the stories, the dialog, and the art.
EDIT:
Changing to 5 stars. I'm gonna go buy this and read it again. I miss it. Forgive me, B&B.
UPDATE:
Chapter Two:

Chapter 4. I'm a sucker for this Supergirl incarnation. (With Lobo)

Finished again. Good fun. Supergirl and Lobo a highlight. And what happens to Batman. You'd probably enjoy it more if you knew DC Comics history, but I enjoyed it just fine not being an expert.

Remember when comic books used to be fun and nobody whined about their emotional issues because they were too busy, flying, fighting aliens and saving the world?
Well, so does Mark Waid and that means we get a collection of great team ups, big, epic stories and 1,000 little bits of DC history all done with beautiful George Perez art.
The Supergirl/Lobo story is particularly fun and I generally hate Lobo.

Really a 3.5 book. Fun story jumping around in time and space. Love Mark Waid’s deep knowledge of the DC universe. The real highlight is George Perez’s art. Some fantastic stuff in this book including the casino world, Raan, and 31st Century stuff. Recommend it to any big DC fan.

Despite the reboot of this old concept, the book sets up for a fantastic series of reading ahead.

An enjoyable dive in to the DC universe featuring a makeshift, unlikely team of Batman, Green Lantern, Supergirl, Blue Beetle, The Legion of Superheroes and, surprisingly, Lobo.
A rather good set up and high stakes are enough to entice any reader in a comic and this does it relatively well. It's not 100% perfect but it kept me quite interested in finding out how they would resolve the situation.
With a book that can tell the reader all of history and the reader can use it to manipulate the flow of events (EG: Avoid incoming attacks) it's a pretty overused but interesting plot device and it's put to rather good use in this novel.
However. The greatest downfall of this comic is the villains - The Lords of Luck - who are rather generic and boring. Their ultimate plot is very basic - prolong a war - very original... On top of that, the final fight seems rushed and uneventful. With so much of a build up it's a little disappointed and it left me just thinking to myself "Is that it?". And with a sudden, unexplained inclusion of a rip-off of Marvel's Fantastic Four right at the end who have never, to my knowledge, ever been seen or mentioned prior in the DC Universe, this just makes the conclusion really, well, stupid. Especially considering they're the universe's only hope against the Lords of Luck.
A good build up but a disappointing conclusion.

Mark Waid is usually hit or miss for me, but this one was a hit for several reasons. The story was interesting and had some humor that did not feel forced as Waid does at times. I have always been a fan of the Outer Space settings, so the inclusion of Adam Strange and Rann/Thannigar was nice. I like (not love) Lobo, so his brief appearance was just right. The Legion of Superheroes and the Challengers of the Unknown are my all-time favorites, so having them as a big part of the story was fabulous. (It’s a shame DC can’t do a good Challenger book now.)
I thought it ended a bit quickly, but it was a satisfactory end, so I’m not sure where vol 2 is going.
George Perez was one of the greatest comic book artists ever, so the art was pretty good

The book just couldn't settle down and tell the story. It was all, "Wow! Gee! Wowie! Zowie! Here's something even bigger than the last page, which we'll bring to you before we play the previous story out!". I mean, something significant happens to Batman (no spoiler), but it's completely undone within 4 pages of his arc (throughout maybe 10-15 pages in the book, but those 10-15 pages are telling other characters' stories). It's freaking ridiculous, and a waste of my time. I expected a lot more than this from Mark Waid. This candy-assed crud was straight from the 1980s, and the reason why I didn't get into DC comics until about 5 years ago.

I have actually read this before but I guess I didn't give a review. Although - I will admit it must not have impressed me much because I remember almost nothing about this story so it was kind of like reading it the first time. I agree with one reviewer who said (paraphrase) "It's fun in a Saturday morning cartoon from the 80's way". I am on board with that assessment. It also explains why I have little memory of the story. It is fast, frenetic, doesn't make all that much sense and looks great doing it thanks to George Perez.
Before I get into the review proper - this book doesn't work without George's art. Not only is he one of the greatest artists ever to put pen to page in the comic books he is without question the BEST when it comes to drawing a lot of heroes all at once. I will hear debates about other artists being better than him but I will not listen to anyone who doubts him being the best at "a lot of darn heroes all at once". Crisis on Infinite Earths, JLA/Avengers, Avengers, New Teen Titans, JLA, LoSH...the man was the BEST. And even when the story loses steam you still have his art.
The story - I will start by saying this probably should have been pitched as "Mystery in space" because it starts with one and then proceeds to go to space a lot to solve the mystery. We even get Mystery in space star Adam Strange making an appearance. There is a lot of fun in this - a man is found murdered in space by Green Lantern and he calls the world's greatest detective Batman to help him out but Batman has the same murdered guy in his Batcave - in fact this murdered guy has clones all around the world murdered in the same way. Cool start! So why only 3 stars? Well it is a testimony to Waid's writing that after reading the story twice I still cannot tell you why the guy was murdered or why he has hundreds of clones murdered the same way all around the world. I am NOT saying Waid didn't explain it - I am just saying it was probably explained in a panel as an after thought and does not play a big role in the rest of the story. I think the guy stole the book of destiny which is the big thing half the heroes chase after for the rest of the story.
The other problem is - there are two things the heroes chase after - the book of destiny and ...a probability gun called (let me look this up in the book because the name is really stupid) a Haruspex. I just did a Google search on that and the reason Waid chose this stupid name was because it means "(in ancient Rome) a religious official who interpreted omens by inspecting the entrails of sacrificial animals". Note to Waid - using an obscure word to name your weapon that doesn't even "see into the future" but alters probabilities doesn't make you look clever - it makes me roll my eyes because it is a bad name for the weapon. And because there are TWO things already the focus of the story is unfocused. I get why they needed to find the Book of Destiny but I am not sure why they NEEDED to get the Haruspex (I take it back - after a few times the word rolls off my tongue). And that sums up my problem with the story - it is unfocused. A lot is happening but it feels like one idea is abandoned to get to the next one.
Okay - that was the negative but there is still a lot of great stuff. the story with Green Lantern and Supergirl is amazing. Yes, Supergirl comes off a bit too "school girl" in it but then Waid twists that on us and has it play out in a clever way. Her later team up with Lobo is also fun. Also Batman being chased by the Legion of Super-heroes was great but I still don't understand why Batman was running even thought Brainiac figured it out...never clear to me.
The four guys who were written out of the book of destiny and can save the day was a clever way to end it.
So yes, a lot of Saturday morning cartoon fun. Don't think about the story or the motives too hard and just enjoy this jam packed story drawn by one of the greatest comic book artists ever.

This one is tough. I really enjoyed the beginning of the story arc, and the team ups. But by the end, the teams ups just became *all* of the heroes, which made for a mess. Also, they were jumping timelines and running back and forth between each other (in physical space) for no reason whatsoever. The conclusion of the story was convoluted - but I guess sometimes that's just comics. All of the "crises" are convoluted, but I guess when all of existence hangs in the balance, and there are ten-plus heroes involved, convoluted comes with the territory. I'm knocking off at least one star for the creepy way they handled Super Girl. I'm disappointed in Mark Waid on this one. Both GL and Lobo have interactions with her that seem like playing out fantasies for the reader, while noting that it's inappropriate because she's 17. Noting it doesn't excuse it. I didn't want that and it creeped me out that it was there. On top of that, it was completely unnecessary. We all know Super Girl is young. And we all know that characters like GL, Lobo, and Batman are going to underestimate her. Using her sexuality as a premise for mentioning her age in order to arrive at "young" is dumb. Also, there was a completely missed opportunity when Super Girl was arm wrestling Lobo. We all know she can take him easily. She could have easily "paid" him by him taking a bet out on himself before she threw the match. This is the way it has to happen, because it's harder to write future stories for Lobo where word gets around he was "beaten by a girl." But, screw that, the better idea would have been for her to take a bet out on herself, kick his butt, and then pay him with her winnings. I don't think that's too much to ask from a book written in 2007.

A pasáže s Batmanem, toho mám moc ráda.
Splývali mi, a kdyby jich tam pár ubylo či přibylo, ani bych to nepoznala a nic by to se mnou nedělalo.

A very interesting volume with a very complex and delightful plot. Not very keen on most of the parts of Super Girl as the way she is written but eventually gets better and more independent. Also, some drawings of her are a bit on the short skirt side. And the hateful heels of doom.
Besides that, I really liked the art and colours. Specially the colours. It is not anything extraordinary like, never seen before, or out of the norm, but equally enjoyable.
Really easy reading, and entertaining with a very diverse cast of characters very well lead. I loved the balance between them all, it does not feel unbalanced or overpowered in any aspects. I enjoyed the dialogues, which helped on the comic being so delightful and easy to read. I does not get overwhelming or confusing at any point.
Plus time travel, who does not love time travel?

Someone has stolen the Book of Destiny from the Endless, and now faced against a foe who knows past, present, and future, Batman and Green Lantern find themselves in a fight that takes them across worlds and time itself. When allies in the form of Supergirl, Blue Beetle, Lobo, Adam Strange, and the Legion of Super-Heroes are called in to assist, then you know the scale of the battle at hand! Waid puts in a great story that grabs heroes from all corners of the DC universe, both present and old. There's lots of chuckles to be had from some of the team-ups (Supergirl and Lobo together are fantastic), and the story ramps up at a great pace. Perez packs the visuals full of details in his usual dense, clear style, and the result is a quite fun old-school romp through some of the lesser explored corners the DC universe.

A fun little series where various heroes who don't normally work together get paired up.
The overall plot is Destiny of the Endless' book get stolen and various factions are trying to get their hands on it as it details the past, present and future.
There's plenty of fun scenes. Blue Beetle being all adorkable while helping Batman, Supergirl not impressed with Lobo being intimidating, Batman and Green Lantern switching to their civilian guises when the trail leads to a casino.
Perez's art is, as always, amazing. And in the afterword, Waid points out a few easter eggs and shout outs one might have missed on a first read through.
A pretty good read from before the New 52 mess.

4.5. It would have been a 5 but I can't stand Lobo.
Each chapter involves a team-up (Batman/Green Lantern, Supergirl/Lobo, Batman/Blue Beetle) with the overarching threat being the theft of the book of Destiny (Sandman's brother), a scheme to use the book to manipulate reality and the four heroes who can cheat destiny's decrees. Very well done, with a good feel for the characters, particularly the Challengers of the Unknown.

July 3, 2025I loved this - super entertaining and a really gripping narrative from the very first pages. Like JLA year one a few days ago, I was slightly hesitant about this cast of characters, but the central dialogue is just so lively and fun that I realised I had nothing to worry about. There's some great set pieces too, I could easily read a full story all about that gambling planet they visit early on. It did lose me with some of its complexities towards the end, but what a thrill it was for the most part. I'd love to see this adapted into a film one day, it feels right up James Gunn's alley, even if I know that's very unlikely.

This was a good one, really gives you a bunch of the different DC characters and the story was whack but fun.
Things I liked
Supergirl going a bit nuts due to three suns was amusing...
Green Lantern/Supergirl interactions...those were just funny
Batman being badass no matter the century
Blue Beetle
Destiny getting a cameo!
Didn't like
the rushed way the ending felt
