The Way, My Way: 10th Anniversary Edition

Rate this book
A revised 10th Anniversary edition of the classic memoir that many say is the best Camino book they ́ve read.

Bill Bennett ́s book has now been made into a major movie, and reading it you ́ll see why.

Written in a humorous self-deprecating style reminiscent of Bill Bryson, it tells the story of a stubborn self-obsessed and pedantic man who undergoes a fundamental shift in character whilst walking the famous 800km pilgrimage route across Spain.

At times laugh-out-loud funny, at other times so deeply personal and emotional you ́ll have a tear in your eye, The Way, My Way is a must read for anyone thinking of walking the Camino, or for those that want to relive the experience.

I was given recommendation to read this book, by a friend who really enjoyed the movie. It was a fascinating look at how Bill Bennett took on the challenge of walking the Camino. I was blown away by his perserverance in continuing the journey - day after day - despite his significant difficulties with his shin-splints, knee (bone on bone) and particularly right big toe. His determination kept him going in an effort to bring about big changes in his personal life. A major achievement - against all odds.

Started this book after watching the movie with mum and brother after they had completed the Camino themselves - such a great perspective on the walk, it’s harsh realities but the rewards and life changing experiences that come with it. Humour was great, reflections on Coke Zero to ice ratios haha combined with confronting who you are as a person and what it means to trust your own intuition. I enjoyed reading a non fiction “journey” book and hoping to find more like this. Maybe one day will join the walk…

Loved this read and Bill Bennett's take on the Camino De Frances. A one-man journey yet friendships and insights made along the way. The reader is given an honest look into the satirical - yet all arrows pointing to himself!. Some super funny moments which had me giggling! - yet thought provoking, meaningful and very inspiring. I was definitely left wanting more. I would rate this as one of the best books written based around the Camino De Frances pilgrimage.

I recently read The Way, My Way in just 8 days, drawn in by its unique structure and the author’s transformative journey. The book is divided into short, between four and six-page chapters, each exploring a distinct theme that reflects how the author evolved during his pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela.

One of the aspects I loved most about this book was how each chapter felt like a reflective pause, offering deep insights into personal growth, resilience, and self-discovery. The writing was engaging and immersive, making it easy to follow the author’s emotional and physical challenges along the way. The themes varied from perseverance and solitude to encounters with strangers who left a lasting impact on his journey.

The pacing was perfect, each chapter was short enough to read in a single sitting, yet meaningful enough to leave a lasting impression. This made it an ideal book to pick up regularly and reflect on, mirroring the slow and deliberate nature of a pilgrimage itself.

Overall, Bennett's book is an inspiring read for anyone interested in personal transformation, travel memoirs, or the Camino de Santiago. It captures the essence of how a journey can change a person, not just in terms of physical endurance but in perspective and spirit. Highly recommended!

So heartfelt and compelling.

This was a fantastic read. It brought back memories of my Portugues Camino de Santiago which I completed with my wife in 2019. It reminded me of the simplicity; wake up, put on shoes and my backpack (and in our case rain gear - holy cow did it rain!), walk. That’s it. Just walk. Take it all in. Understand everyone is there for their own reasons and walk. I loved Bill’s stories. I loved so many of the little things he wrote of, in part, because he was so deliberate and in the moment. This story represents everything the Camino can be. I can’t wait to see the movie.

This book was so close to the movie except the ending, but it didn't disappoint.

Things he learned along the way that I resonate with:

1. When being rejected, whether it has been in a relationship or work situation or whatever circumstance, he discovered that later, something better had always presented itself!

2. Don't judge other's - judgement is at the heart of separation, and separation is at the heart of conflict.

I went and saw the movie with a friend and didn't think I'd like it, was I very wrong!

Such a brilliant book, all the feelings of contemplating life.

Must read 📚 👌

Really enjoyed this

I really enjoyed this read. The dry humour, the ability of the author to poke fun at himself whilst at the same time being quite reflective, gave his story a warmth and relatability. I also enjoyed reading the reflections at the end of each chapter. This was one of those books where I tried to slow down my reading once I realised I was getting toward the end. This is a re-read book.

A great Camino account

Bill Bennett brought a lot of himself to this telling of his walk across Spain. Reading it ahead of my second Camino has been a great reminder of what the Camino is capable of giving a person who makes the effort to receive.

I actually read the paperback version of this book.
Interesting to read Bill's thoughts ten years after he walked the Camino.
There are insights gained, wisdom earned and the knowledge that even though he is now a Pilgrim, pilgrims are far from perfect.

Brought back so many memories of walking the 800km Camino Frances in 2022 with my sister. Wonderful read, makes me want to do it again, maybe the Camino Del Norte this time?

The Way

I liked the story of his journey, but I didn't like his ego and narcissism. I'm looking forward to reading another book from a woman's perspective.
