Hannah McCallis is all sunshine and sweetness as lead physical therapist at Clear Meadows Rehabilitation Hospital, but she wants nothing to do with the grumpy, arrogant, yet handsome Dr. Clark Parks. Despite the snick of connection when they touch, he's everything she's sworn off. When their late-night work conversations become Saturday morning coffee, Hannah wonders if she can heal this complicated doc with a little TLC. She’d better be careful, though, as someone else wants Clark for herself…and will stop at nothing to have him.
Katie Mettner wears the title of 'the only person to lose her leg after falling down the bunny hill' and loves decorating her prosthetic leg to fit the season. She lives in Northern Wisconsin with her own happily-ever-after and spends the day writing romantic stories with her sweet puppy by her side. Katie has an addiction to coffee and dachshunds and a lessening aversion to Pinterest — now that she’s quit trying to make the things she pins.
This was my first book by Katie Mettner and now I’m eager to read more!
In this one, we meet a wonderful physical therapist, Hannah McCallis, who works at a rehab hospital. Hannah can relate to her patients in one way because she is a person with a disability.
Hannah is attracted to a doctor at the hospital, and she’s fighting it. Dr. Clark Parks can feel it, too. One major obstacle in their way is another hospital employee who has her eye on the handsome doctor. And she just happens to have family in high places.
I rooted for Hanna and Clark to find happiness and love!
I really loved reading a book like this in a people-first language. This is when you say things like she uses a wheelchair, rather than she is wheelchair-bound or he is happy and successful rather than he has overcome his disability.
People with disabilities have full lives, work, fall in love, have problems at work, and Mettner is not afraid to show us this world.
I’ll be back for more Kattie Mettner books!
My thanks to the author for the copy of the book to read and honestly review.
Katie has such a special way with her storytelling. In Caught by the Complicated Doc, she pulls out all the stops! Romace, laughter, conflict, educating her readers, and the cutest winnie support dog. From the very first chapter, you will be cheering for Hannah, the Head Therapist, and Dr. Clark Parks to have a happily ever after.
Hannah is the sweetest, kindest, and most real character I've encountered in a long time. Losing a leg as a young teen, she uses her own life experiences to help her understand how to meet patient needs. Her support dog, Frankie, brings a lightness to the very real issues that her rehabilitation patients face. Hannah is so caught up in helping others that she doesn't see that Dr. Park's grumpiness is his way to avoid her.
Dr. Clark Park knew that with the first meeting 3 years ago, Hannah was it for him. He masks his need for her by acting grumpy and disinterested until they come together to work on a project for the Rehab Center.
Katie does a great job of building the sexual tension as Hannah and Dr. Park discover how much they want a relationship. Together, they work to overcome personal obstacles, as well as a jealous coworker, because they are "Stronger Together."
If you're new to inclusive romance books, you're going to enjoy Caught by the Complicated Doc. Not only will you fall in love with all Katie's characters and dog, but she uses her own experiences to help readers understand challenges faced by anyone with a health condition or impairment. I will definitely read this one again!
This book has a service dog. And we all know dogs in books are perfect add ons. Well in my eyes. Frankie is a sweet dog. More than a dog. He's a best friend.
Hannah, the physical therapist. I really loved her Character in this story.
Now Dr parks.. he's a bit complicated. Or is he. This was simply a Terrific read.
But don't take my word. Grab your copy Of this sweet book. On april 30th See what the Complicated doc is all about.
Caught By the Complicated Doc by Katie Mettner is a heartfelt medical romance set in a physical therapy facility, centered around Clark and Hannah. The uniqueness of this story lies in Hannah's perspective as an amputee and head physical therapist, allowing her to connect with her patients on both physical and emotional levels, having navigated a similar journey herself. I liked the author’s clear details about the mechanics of prosthetics and the challenges patients face regarding body image, especially when pursuing romantic relationships.
From their very first interaction at the job interview, Clark and Hannah were drawn to each other. When they finally give in to their feelings after three years, it’s heartwarming to see how Clark accepts all of Hannah, not just parts of her. However, I found the conflict toward the end a bit frustrating, particularly with Hannah's quick loss of faith in Clark without allowing him the chance to explain himself.
On the other hand, I appreciate the author’s inclusion of a guide at the end of the book on how to appropriately address individuals with disabilities using people-first language. This is an aspect that is often overlooked by many. For example, instead of saying "she is wheelchair-bound," use "she uses a wheelchair," and instead of "that is handicapped parking," use "that is accessible parking." Such thoughtful language changes can make a significant difference in how we refer to these individuals.
Overall, I hope readers of this story gain new insights into the experiences of patients with disabilities and that those on similar journeys feel seen and understood.
A heartwarming funny wonderful book! I literally could not put it down! The humor was top notch, I found my self giggling quite a bit. I really enjoyed getting to know the characters! I felt I could be friends with each one .. .well almost ! Physical Therapists are heroes in their own right, and this book highlights the care and love they have for their patients who become part of their lives and family! Run, don't walk to get this book! You will love it!
I really enjoyed this book. It was a short cute romance novel. Katie Mettner did it once again. She’s makes you feel the emotions that the characters are going through. I love how she incorporates the disabled community in her books 🩷. I truly felt like I was the amputee going through the nervousness of a fitting. If you want a shortish quick love story to read then this is the one for you! I hope this becomes a series 😋
This was wonderfully told story. Mettner can write with such a range in capturing audiences with her story telling -- whether in a series or a single standalone novel. Many of her books bring light to those that have a disability of some sort, and she does it well considering her personal experience.
I absolutely LOVED Hannah and the light she brought to her patients each and everyday despite her physical limitations and past. This romance was not just a journey of a relationship but also a story of overcoming past hurts - in families and relationships. A story that had its way of teaching it is best to get to know someone on a deeper level to understand why one would behave the way they do and how their past has shaped them to whatever point they are at in life and then choose to extend even more grace with helping in some way shape of form. Hannah had a beauty that was not just on the outside but was overflowing and extending outward from the inside. And who doesn't love an animal "sidekick". Frankie was such a fun added side character that truly played a big role. Clark.....everything about him speaks masculine and confidence. He knows he's handsome but is very modest. He is not superficial and I admired how much he nurtured and cared for Hannah. It was not an insta-lust type story but one that took years to finally give into the constant chemistry and sparks. Their relationship was so sweet even when they were fighting it and trying to be professional and that it shows that all good things will come together at the perfect time.
This is a clean language story, no profanity or crude words. There are several open door scenes that occur but most are tastefully done and leaves a lot of what is done implied. I will say that the one scene that has a bit more "described" was not out of line and in fact, added to understanding how one can find love and be desired despite being an amputee. The focus was not so much on the actions occurring itself but the emotional journey to find value and self worth in the midst of it.
I received an advanced copy of this book from the author/publisher and my thoughts and opinions are all my own.
Everything about this book touched my heart. I fell into this book one evening and did not come up for air until later that evening when I closed the last page. Hannah McCallis is my new fictional hero. Hannah McCallis lost the lower portion of her leg many years ago. She has had a prosthetic limb ever since that time. She now she uses her mental knowledge as well as her physical knowledge as the head Physical Therapist at a cushy rehab center, Clear Meadows Rehab. She is a breath of fresh air to everyone she comes in contact with. She has been where a lot of these patients are now, and she can truly relate to their fears and unease as they get accustomed to a new normal.
Dr. Clark Parks is very good at his job, but he is a little grumpy. He is intrigued by Hannah, but she tries to avoid him. However, she sees something below that grumpy exterior.
This was a sweet, slow-burn romance. It was also extremely educational for me as I did not realize the things that individuals with prosthetics go through on a daily basis. It touched me. Katie Mettner knows this information firsthand, and her personal knowledge really shines through the pages. We also have a villain in the story, which you will just have to read the book to find out about. There is an adorable dog named Frankie who is what I call a comfort dog for the patients. He is Hannah's support dog, but he does so much more as she is willing to share him with the patients.
This book will leave a smile on your face, but it will also make you more fully appreciate people who care for people in rehab centers as they help them face their fears and insecurities. The adorable cover is enough to make you want to read it. Trust me you will not be disappointed.
Thank you to the author for this ARC. I am leaving this review voluntarily.
What a page turner! Hannah and Clark had my heart from the start. Hannah is the head physical therapist and Clark is the head rehabilitation physician at Clear Meadows. I love how Hannah handles her patients especially with Harriet. Harriet needs a prosthesis and Hannah, having one herself is so empathetic with her. You will learn what caused her to loose her leg. It’s definitely sad to hear what happened, but she’s a survivor. She’s also a very strong independent woman. Clark has had a crush on Hannah for three years she has no idea about. She is so insecure with relationships because of a past one that didn’t treat her so well. Clark also has something he’s kept back about his life. Is it possible for them to overlook this part, and for Hannah to trust another man? Wait til you find out.
Along their journey, Bridget tries to get between them-she also works at Clear Meadows. She has a crush on Clark and can’t a hint. She is bound and determined to keep Hannah away from Clark. You meet Frankie, Hannah’s comfort dog for her patients-Frankie is so good with them especially Harriet. Frankie will definitely give you a laugh or two.
It isn’t until a walk back to Hannah’s house one day that Clark and her start to really connect. They spend more time outside work-trying to hide their growing connection from others. Neither wants to loose or give up their jobs. Their chemistry is electric and they get along so well. Will Hannah be able to let Clark fully in and give him a chance? Wait til you find out!
This was a sweet and heartwarming romance that pleasantly surprised me! I had never read from Katie before and I had stumbled across this book a few months ago now, and I decided to keep it on my immediate radar in case I needed a pick me up ✌🏻☺️.
For only being 17 chapters l’ll be honest I didn’t expect much nor did I know what to expect. But it certainly delievered so much more then I intended, from our couple’s backgrounds to the mild spicy moments, to drama filled conclusions. 😬😬
Hannah was a great fmc, who had a strong heart and liked to help people who she could relate to. Clark was also a well written mmc, he’d tackled with the pressure to live up to expectations and to always impress but ultimately he wanted to be himself and he could do that with Hannah 💜🥹🙏🏻. I feel both characters had many moments for the readers to relate to.
Oh, and how can I forget sausage dog Frankie!! Hannah’s therapy dog. He was a highlight for sure, and this breed is one of my favourites, I wish I could own one one day 🥹✌🏻😅.
There was one character though that got on my nerves and that was Bridget…she was deffo a mean girl, no doubt about that, and sure she did need help but god was she annoying 🙄🫥.
Other than this though I enjoyed this one and I’d like to check out Katie again in the future 😊. 4/5 stars. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A perfectly written story! I highly recommend this book! There are laughs, a love story, thought provoking (referred no to real life doctor bed-side manners), and the cutest service dog! Katie has the ability to write an entertaining story and educate her readers at the same time!!
Clark is the head rehab physician in Clear Meadows rehab Hospital, the premier private rehab center in Minnesota.
Hannah is the dept head of physical therapy and is the woman he has admired and wanted to get to know better for the last three years. Hannah is good at her job because she was once the patient .
Mrs Lakeman is an older patient who has lost a leg. She was very cranky and Hannah takes her as a patient instead of assigning her to another physical therapist. She recognized this patient needed some patience and understanding so she takes time to sit and talk with her to find the real reason she is so cranky. (We need more drs in real time that have that bedside manner)!
And then there’s Frankie, the miniature dachshund that is a fully trained therapy dog. Frankie brings calmness and joy to the patients and the readers!
Hannah suggests a new project of bringing children in to visit with patients who need extra attention and love. And through the process of working together Hannah and Clark finally decide to give in to their mutual attraction and so begins a wonderful love story!
This book made me laugh, made me think back to when I was in high school and checked out men’s firm butts. lol

“I want every broken piece of you. I promise to hold you together until you feel whole again.”
Katie Mettner is an auto buy author and I’m always recommending her books because they are so swoon worthy and meaningful! She creates characters that are so easy to connect with and relate to.
I was instantly captured by this story and couldn’t put it down. It’s such a heartwarming and feel good story, but also deals with real life obstacles and struggles. I loved getting to know Hannah and Clark as they navigate working closely together while trying to remain professional and not acknowledge the attraction between them. The sneaking around behind closed doors at the office was so fun. I loved seeing their relationship develop and learning about their pasts. Hannah has been through so much trauma and the way Clark cares for her and helps her heal was so touching. I felt so connected to these characters and the story is so much more than just a romance. I loved it so much!!
I love Katie’s stories and I was so excited to read this book. I adore the cover…the doggie stole my heart.
There is so many laughs, amazing banter, the cutest dog and a beautiful love story.
Hannah is a kind, caring and amazing young woman whose mission is to help others, make them comfortable and build their confidence. She doesn’t not back down from those who challenge her.
Clark comes across as a grumpy doctor but deep down he is a kind, sensitive and thoughtful person. His behavior is a mask to hide his true feelings for Hannah.
I love how they come together to work on a project which forces them to spend many hours together. What started out as a challenge turns into a beautiful friendship, earned trust and a successful project delivery.
I always know I’m going to smile, laugh and have all the feelings when I read a book written by Katie. She gives characters their own voice, shares challenging events and teaches us something new about disabilities in each of her books.
Hannah is the perfect physical therapist! She knows first hand how her patients feel. She became an amputee at the age of 14 after a terrible accident. She is confident that she can help not only in pt but also by caring and encouraging, but she isn’t as confident in the dating and relationship area, after getting her heart broken and being ridiculed about her disability, she has decided she doesn’t need love except by her service dog, Frankie. Dr. Clark Parks, has issues of self confidence of his own, but he also knows that he has been attracted to Hannah since the day he met her, and hopes he can prove to her that she is as whole a woman as anyone. But, there are many obstacles in the way, and one is bound to cause trouble and prevent Dr. Parks for from convincing Hannah that she is good enough in any and all ways. I loved this book and all the wonderful characters in this encouraging rom com
I really enjoyed this book. Katie Mettner knows how to reach your heart with wonderful characters that feel just like we all feel. The insecurities of Hannah who lost her leg in an accident as a teen makes us feel for her situation. Dr. Clark Parks is a man who is great at what he does for work. Now when it comes to women, he found the one for him, Hannah. Although working together makes it difficult to have a relationship, he is willing to find a way. The attraction between these two characters was so real. I just wanted to keep reading about these two.
The author has a way of drawing a reader in by displaying the vulnerable emotions of the characters. Highlighting the challenges of being disabled and showing that they live fulfilling lives in spite of a disability, not because of one. I know when I pick up a book by this author it's going to be good! I highly recommend this book. Thanks to the author and publisher for an ARC of this wonderful book!
I loved this story because it had such great characters. Hannah is so sweet and kind. She is able to help her patients because she lost her leg as a young teen. Clark is definitely not what he seems grumpy and disinterested, it was interesting to see why he acted that way and his real personality. They work together to work on a project for the rehabilitation center. I enjoyed Frankie, Hannah’s support dog. It was interesting to see how she used him throughout the story. The book makes you smile, I highly recommend you read it. I received a copy of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Hannah McCallis has mixed feelings about the hot Dr. Clark Parks, but she won’t let an attraction go any further. She’s been burned before and won’t go through that again. He’s also a grouch, but he has his reasons. Talk about a slow burn!
A fun read with a strong female main character who loves her patients, her job, and her dog. She’s full of fantastic ideas on how to help others but needs help bringing them to fruition.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This is a cute romance in which the main characters have danced around their attraction for each for over 3 years as they work together at the same hospital. Hannah doesn't think that Dr Parks likes her as he is always gruff around her and insists on calling her purebred dachshund a "mutt". But Clark has been attracted to Hannah from the moment he met her and uses the gruffness as a shield to hide his attraction. This is a sweet love story sprinkled with challenges faced by persons who have lost a limb and an adorable therapy dog.
Caught by the Complicated Doc is a rare delight that not only warms the heart but also inspires the soul, brilliantly weaving together elements of love, personal growth, and the challenges of healing both physically and emotionally. Hannah and Clark are two wonderful characters to cheer for, and I absolutely loved Frank E. Furter and his role as a support dog--not just to Hannah but to the patients at Clear Meadows Rehabilitation Hospital too! Such a fun read!
This story is the reason I read romance novels. The sincerity and emotions that Dr. Parks and Hannah show for one another is so romantic. It's what I wish I had in reality. Of course there are complications along the way, but isn't there always. This beautiful love story has a way of twisting your heart strings. Add a little wiener named Frankie and you will sit for hours just to see exactly how it ends. Loved it 5 stars
Caught by the Complicated Doc is a good and fun book. Put together a young woman who really cares for others and does not put herself first and a doctor who only thinks of work and has no time for anyone or anything else. This is not only a romance, but a book about those with disabilities and how they are just like people who do not have a disability. You will like the story and you will also learn a lot at the same time.
Hannah and Clark felt an instant spark, but they both had complicated pasts and reasons they felt they should keep their distance. When they finally let their guards down, and open up their hearts, sparks fly in this sweet, funny romance. April is Limb Loss Awareness Month. Hannah is an amputee. She and author Katie Mettner want everyone to know: Disabled Romance is romance. Love is love!
I’m not a doctor but I do work in hospital pharmacy so this was set in a setting that was really enjoyable for me to read about. I really enjoyed all the characters except maybe one, iykyk. Clark and little Frankie could just melt your heart. If you’ve never read one of Katie’s books this is definitely a great one to start with!
This book definitely deserves 5 stars. The spicy level was around a 3 but the story line was so good. Then ending really took me by surprise. I was at the edge of my seat trying to read as fast as I could to see what happened. I couldn’t turn the page fast enough. The eulogy definitely made me cry but it was so sweet.
This book is so wonderful. It really delves into what amputee patients experience while recovering from surgery and learning to walk. It was heartbreaking the look people gave Hannah when they realized she had a prosthetic leg. Hannah is such a strong character. This book is written beautifully.
What a beautiful romance story. Denying their love was a game they were good at, but was it worth it? Would secrets of their past keep them apart? Or will a dog help bring them together? This story was good and endearing. I highly recommended it.
A lovely heartfelt story filled with many emotions and dynamics that make this book a great read. A wonderful showing of how living with a disability doesn’t keep you from living a life filled with love and joy.
