Sonoko Machida (町田 そのこ) is a Japanese writer. Her story Cameroon no Aoi Sakana received the R-18 Literary Award in 2016. Her novel 52 Hertz no Kujiratachi won the 2021 Japan Booksellers' Award Grand Prize and sold over 400,000 copies in Japan.
This is the second book after her debut. I LOVE her works. The way she chose Hiragana instead of using Kanji characters for the title of this book is just clever. It offers us to imagine something else rather than just fish eggs. I got the sense that it's talking about something beyond "life". There's something mystical about it.
We're mainly following this guy who is a shut-in and a huge comic nerd. He read this comic before about people leaving behind a red little bead after death. He believes in this comic that talks about when a person die they leave behind a red little bead that looks like a fish egg and when you take a bite, it'll show you what that person wished for before their death.
So is this a myth or could this be real? Would you want to take a bite to see what could be their last wish? I want to reread this! Whenever I see salmon roe, I will think of this story.
