Loki: A Bad God’s Guide #3

Loki: A Bad God's Guide to Ruling the World

Rate this book
Loki's third doodle-packed diary in the number one best-selling series.

When Heimdall and Hyrrokkin abandon their "children" to go on holiday, Odin sends Baldur – Thor's half brother and god of making Loki look bad – to babysit.

As Baldur and Thor bond, Loki's attempts to prove he's good start getting a bit desperate. After the drama teacher casts him as the villain in the school play, Loki starts to wonder whether there's any point in being good when everyone seems convinced of his villainy.

That is until he discovers a rather unusual ring among the costumes and props. A ring that looks suspiciously like the cursed ring of Andvari, one that promises Loki the world if only he gives in to his deepest, darkest desires...

*I was gifted this as a part of the Indie Book Awards as this title has been shortlisted for the Children’s Fiction category!*

I knew I was going to like this book and I couldn’t wait to read it as soon as I saw the cover and flicked through a couple of the pages. This is exactly the kind of book I would’ve gravitated towards reading as a child, and it turns out I am no different as an adult. I definitely would have loved it more when I was younger and I will definitely be recommending this series to the younger readers I have in my life, but this was also an excellent book for adults if you’re looking for something different!

Even without having read the previous two books in this series, this was so much to read and very easy to get into. It’s ridiculously funny and fast paced, and if like me you’re used to reading heavier stuff this is a great, refreshing palette cleanser. I absolutely loved the humour in here and it did make me laugh a few times, and so I know it’ll definitely make younger ones giggle (especially when it comes to the extreme number of fart jokes in here). I felt like it balanced good use of language that meant as an adult reader, you could also appreciate the wit and sarcasm at play. It really was just enjoyable.

The plot started out to be quite fun and I really enjoyed the diary format of the story. The illustrations are also great, and I found the characters navigating human life and different concepts to be very amusing. I will say around the 70% mark it got a little bit boring and repetitive for me but then the ending picked it up again a little. I feel like we just got into a bit of a rut when Loki started using the ring and the pacing took a bit of a hit and my interest started waning a little bit because the momentum was lost and not a lot seemed to be happening. It did resolve itself quickly though.

I loved all of the characters here and their hilarious distinct voices. Although this book was very tongue in cheek, and funny, and a little bit mischievous, I do also like how much it emphasised friendship and trying to be a better person. There were a lot of honest conversations in here that were really uplifting and nice to see, and a lot of raw displays of emotion that were processed and a lot of open problem solving. It was nice to have that alongside some really nice on page relationships that were positive.

I’d definitely read more from this author, and if I ever stumble across the other novels in the series I’ll be sure to read them!

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂Lol!!!!!😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😆😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄😄 LOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This book was un-put downable! It was HILARIOUS!!!!!!!

Loki, God Of Mischief, is on Midgard, AKA Earth, where he finds a manic ring which makes him do all of the wrong things. It was thoroughly entertaining and when I was bored this book helped me pass the time.
In case I haven't told you, this book was funny. REALLY funny.

These books are great for kids.

I don't give star ratings to the books I read my daughter because I am torn between rating how she felt, rating how good a book for children I thought it was and rating how I personally found this book.

But this one is a cracker, let's be honest, so I've given it the full 5 stars on reflection, because it's a 5 in all three of those areas.

The third book still maintained my daughter's interest. She really loves reading the cartoon bits. I have no idea how this can be read on Audiobook, TBH!

Dieses interagiert mit dem jungen Gott und treibt ihn mehr als einmal an den Rand der Verzweiflung;

Fazit:

What worked:
The narrative has a light-hearted tone as Loki serves his punishment as a human, teenage boy on Earth. It’s based on Norse mythology but it feels very different from other books on the same topic. Loki still talks of causing mischief but he’s not able to use most of his powers. His guardians want him to practice casting magic spells from a book but he gets frustrated when they aren’t immediately successful. Loki only wants to be idolized by everyone else so he feels especially slighted when others show Thor any amount of positive attention. The story is told through Loki’s eyes so readers experience the “unfair” events from his slanted point of view.
The humorous tale is enhanced through illustrations and it’s written as a magical diary. The book itself acts as another character as it tends to point out and correct Loki’s lies. The two characters banter back and forth and the book’s increasing distress alerts readers that Loki’s decisions are making matters worse. There are also pages where Loki provides amusing definitions of familiar objects, places, and activities such as cruises, food banks, and field trips (where permission slips mean teachers won’t be responsible if any students die). The author incorporates many different fonts and special effects to differentiate speakers and modes of communication. Interestingly, Loki’s conscience uses the smallest, lightest shade of font.
Loki strives (kind of) to prove his goodness throughout the plot but the story takes a turn when he finds the cursed ring. It feeds on Loki’s vanity and anger and encourages him to take the greatness he deserves. The ring mentally speaks to him and the author uses a different font and graphics to identify when this is happening. Two human girls are aware that Loki is a god and one of them is his best friend. She realizes something is happening to him and tries to talk him out of bad choices. This creates a conflict between the ring and everyone else but the real problem is within Loki’s mind. It’s a struggle between his desire to be admired and his desire to prove his virtue.
What didn’t work as well:
Loki is self-centered and a narcissist but his behavior and comments become redundant over time. The author very effectively describes how readers are supposed to view him but even his positive moments are diluted by self-absorbed statements. There’s little relief from his attitude since the book is a diary sharing all of Loki’s thoughts. However, the author provides enough optimistic incidents that readers will root for Loki to become a better person and receive support and recognition from the other characters.
The final verdict:
The book probably won’t appeal to everyone but it’s a fresh, hilarious version of Norse gods. Everything in the book revolves around Loki’s half-hearted desire to prove his virtuousness and the difficulty he has in changing the way he’s always acted. Overall, Loki’s vulnerable character will grab young readers and I recommend you give this book a shot.

This third book (of a gazillion – there is no end planned, or so the author told me in the spring) continues much as we left off, with Loki seriously rattled by life as a human schoolchild. Here, Thor is just as lumpen and loved, which does a lot of the rattling, but things get worse – Balder is here to house-sit and look after his brother and Loki. And Balder is even more loved, in a very glossy, smug, beach-ready-and-then-some way. As usual Loki is forced to converse with his diary, which talks back, but perhaps none of this is actually going to last, for what is this on the horizon but the voice of his conscience? What's more, he's also rattled that he is not the heroic lead in the school play, but is instead the villain – surely he should be the nice, good guy?

Here the poo jokes seem reined in a little (beyond the swear word beginning T and ending in urds, and a riotously bad fart in the final third), the diary is back with its waspish definitions to take the mickey out of our human lives, and everything is still as wonderfully presented as usual. In fact, there is a change in that regard – the cut-out in the front cover has been removed (or added back in, perhaps), which kind of ruins the shelf many kids are growing of these. This contains A Message about gaining popularity, and how that is not the be all and end all – which ultimately is a bit rich, as these were instantly popular, and on this evidence will only remain so. As usual, a strong four stars.

Loki: A Bad God's Guide to Ruling the World is the third book in the brilliantly funny series of Loki stories. it continues detailing Loki's experiences being stuck in the body of a pre-pubescent boy as punishment for his mischievous deeds on Asgard. In this third instalment, Loki is still trying to be good, but when he still isn't receiving the same adoration and positive attention that Thor gets and a cursed ring promises to give him everything he desires, the temptation is too much for Loki to bear...
This is another, fast-paced, action-packed, funny story, perfect for KS2. The illustrations and short chapters make it perfect for those children that are still building up their reading stamina and the humour will appeal to many. I feel that the amount of fart jokes become tedious after a while, as even the children in my class (aged 8 and 9) don't really react to toilet humour jokes that are frequent and repetitive. Apart from that though, it is a funny story, with Loki's massively misunderstood attempts at doing the right thing and Heimdall's parenting books being particular favourites of mine.
A great instalment of a funny, popular and exciting children's book series.

Another hilarious Loki book and when I am reading I find myself doing my own Loki voice in my head! More funny earth situations he finds himself in whilst trying to be good and earn virtue points so he can return to Asgard, but this time Loki has to contend with the persuasive powers of a cursed ring too. Loved that he has developed real friendships even though he doesn't really start to understand them until he develops...shock alert...empathy!! Loved the explanations of mortal things such as zoos, mall etc that made me laugh out loud. Some of the best parts though are the illustrations of Loki...particular favourites are Loki on a slide, Loki as a hamster and Loki as a professional footballer. Brilliant!

Sometimes being a villain is too hard to resist and for young Loki, there are several compelling reasons to give in to what everyone expects. But he’s meant to be rising above his natural instincts and showing his fellow Asgardians that he can change. Marvellous mischief awaits the readers in this latest misadventure of our favourite naughty God.

Loki is a character that we just can’t get enough of and in this quirky interpretation, he’s a huge bundle of fun. The glorious illustrations go hand in hand with the witty story and make this series something special. It’s comical and yet very clever.

Bring on the next delightful diary!

Loki: A Bad God's Guide to Ruling the World is the third book in the Loki series. If you haven't read them - Why not! The books are such good fun and have given children a good giggle (a few adults too).

The book is a cross between a comic book and a middle grade novel. It is written in diary form, a diary that speaks and is quite the comedian.

If you love the Marvel movies and fancy a peek into what Loki was like as a child then this series is for you. I can tell you he is no less mischievous back then.

Overall, this is an amazingly funny book that will have the reader chuckling along with.

Book 3 in series
Heimdall and Hyrrokin want to go on a little vacation without Thor and Loki so they bring in Thor's half-brother, Baldur, to babysit. Thor is thrilled as he absolutely adores Baldur - and so does everyone else, except Loki. In addition, there is a drama production happening at school and Loki gets cast as the villain. He's upset about the type-casting; thinks no one will ever see him as being good. One day in the prop room, he finds a ring. When he puts it on, things start to get *very* interesting!

Perfect for those who love the Norse gods and intersection of Diary of a Wimpy Kid with its blend of humor, pictures, and text. Read the others in the series first.

A Bad God’s Guide to Ruling the World is a wonderfully fun, lively adventure packed with humour. Louie Stowell captures Loki’s chaotic charm perfectly, blending jokes and clever dialogue into a story that’s impossible not to smile at. Loki’s attempts at “being good” are both hilarious and surprisingly endearing, making him a character you can’t help but root for.

The plot is energetic, creative and full of surprises, with a cast of characters who shine in every scene. It’s a book that will keep you engaged from start to finish - packed with mischief, magic and warmth.
A brilliant, clever read that continues the
series perfectly.

My students and I love this series. The storyline is as crazy and hilarious as in the first two books. There is a fair amount of toilet humour, this time in the form of hamster poo and that is sure to win a lot of children's hearts.

Ooh, there are a few things that I do not understand though. But I think I had better not ask here as that would spoil the story. I have come to the conclusion that as a mere mortal, there are things about deities that I would never understand.

1.5 stars. My least favourite of the series so far. The story dragged on with repetitive sequences that didn’t build up to anything in the end. Very unsatisfying with how Loki overcame the curse of the ring, if you can call it that, by simply deciding not to obey it. The lessons were presented in a boring preachy fashion in this episode as opposed to the clever and funny style of the previous two books.

I thoroughly enjoyed this diary of Loki, who has been sentenced to be a middle schooler as a punishment by the God Odin. It was fast-paced and clever, will be a hit with middle grade readers. It's also full of poop jokes. I'm excited to recommend this to 3rd-5th graders. While this is the third book in the series, it works well as a stand alone novel.

Book 3 of the Loki:A Bad God’s Guide series. More of the same on this one. This appeals to those midgrade readers especially boys. I say that due to the amount of potty humor contained in these books. Outside of that they are a quick read, with the theme of this being along the lines of us being able to make good decisions on our own despite influences or personal desires tempting us to make the wrong decisions. Overall a fun read.

My daughter (10) demolished this book, reading it pretty much in one sitting. She absolutely loved it, giggling away to herself as she read. It also taught her a thing or two as she was entertained by reading the book. She trotted out a fact or two about Norse mythology after reading it. She has already asked me several times when the next book is out. A sure fire hit.

I'm used to read about Loki as the trickster, the one who will cause the Ragnarock. This humorus story about young Loki was very funny and I want to read the rest as I had a lot of fun.
Entertaining and well written.
Highly recommended.

Another marvellous riot of Loki doing bad stuff, Thor doing bum thunder and a skewering of modern life by Louie Stowell. And she still manages to sneak in a message about how to be a nice human being. The plot is well paced and the cartoon-like illustrations add lots of fun. If you haven't discovered this series yet, do it now!

4.75/5 stars for this third Loki book (and audiobook read by the lovely Ben Willbond). Loki gets very close to be really rather bad, but in the end his actions lead to him having some incredibly genuine and moving moments with his family and friends. I, as always, recommend the audiobooks for this series. You will not be let down!!
