New York Times bestselling author Krista Davis returns with a delicious new Domestic Diva Mystery set in Alexandria, Virginia’s charming Old Town neighborhood and featuring entertaining guru Sophie Winston, who loves hosting and event planning but prefers to keep things simple–if only she could…
In Old Town Alexandria’s unlikeliest match, Natasha Smith’s free-spirited mother, Wanda, is engaged to notoriously pompous antiques dealer, Orson Chatsworth—leaving Natasha to plan the entire wedding, beginning with an elaborate engagement party. For the extravagant affair, Natasha splurges on trendy food boards created by rising social media star, Stella St. James. The sumptuous boards go way beyond basic cheese and crackers, as Stella dazzles guests with picture-worthy butter boards, dessert boards, and even doughnut boards. Just as Natasha planned, the food is to die for—until someone actually does.
When the groom collapses, it seems as if a heart attack is to blame. Then guests discover Orson was poisoned, and suddenly Stella’s bespoke boards look a lot less appealing. But with an event this big, the spread of suspects is sure to be impressive. Could Orson’s killer be a jilted ex-lover? A money hungry relative? A bitter former business partner? When even Sophie is not above suspicion, she knows it’s time to get on board and scrape together an investigation of her own . . . before murder becomes the town’s next trend.
Includes delicious recipes, fabulous decorating tips, and easy entertaining hacks!

A murdered antique dealer and groom-to-be, Natasha planning a wedding celebration and a surprise inheritance for Sophie set the stage for an entertaining mystery! The question is, will Sophie survive to see her windfall?
I look forward to each Sophie Winston mystery and this one didn't disappoint. Natasha's mother is marrying a wealthy antiques dealer who is murdered at the engagement party and Sophie finds herself putting on her sleuthing persona once again. The mystery has "twists and turns" and "red herrings" galore. Sophie is her usual down-to-earth self and her friends are their wonderful selves. I think I like Sophie because she's relatable, smart and I love the descriptions of her home and her neighborhood in Old Towne. Of course, there are delicious recipes included. I always have a snack handy when I read this series since I know I'll be hungry!
I'm ready for the next "Diva" mystery!
I received an ARC from NetGal and the opinions expressed in this review are my own.
The mystery was good and I like a lot of the characters which were many !! There were a few things I didn’t understand about some of the relationships because I’ve only read one of these ! I will read one more …
Sophie Winston's frenemy Natasha Smith's mother Wanda is getting married. The groom is antiques dealer Orson Chatsworth and Natasha is happily planning the wedding and the engagement party. You know both will be lavish events.
A crowd of people attend the engagement party and Natasha has gone all out serving a variety of food boards catered by social media star, and the groom's daughter, Stella St. James. Charcuterie boards, butter boards, dessert boards, and more. Natasha has gone overboard on boards but everyone loves them until the groom crumbles to the ground and dies. At first, it is thought that Orson had a heart attack but it is later confirmed that he was poisoned. An event this big yields several suspects, including his daughter, an ex or two, and even Sophie.
Sophie jumps on board to investigate the murder ready to serve the killer his just desserts.
______
This is one of my favorite series. Seventeen books in, the topics are fresh and the characters continue to surprise me.
Sophie has a huge heart and is very down to earth. When working on an event, a new task, or a murder she gives it her all. Natasha is over the top but she and her mother, Wanda, haven't had an easy life. I was so happy that Orson was going to be in their lives. Sophie has a wonderful relationship with her ex-husband Mars. They get together often with their friends Nina and Bernie where the current murder is often discussed. Sophie and Mars share custody of their dog, Daisy, and Sophie has an ocicat named Mochie. All these characters are well-developed. Their interactions are true to life. It is very easy to get invested in their lives. I would love to jump into the pages and become part of their group. Even introduce my Daisy to Sophie's.
Finding Orson's killer was not easy. Ms. Davis has written a compelling complicated mystery with plenty of twists and turns including a surprising reading of Orson Chatsworth's will. Its contents really shook things up and sent the story in a very interesting direction. Then just when I thought all the clues were falling into place, the author served up another twist that stopped me cold. Sophie was working on some other mysteries too that were wrapped up in the last chapter. She really had her hands full in this story and she didn't disappoint. She is quite the sleuth.
Be prepared to have your stomach growl while reading The Diva Goes Overboard. In addition to all the trendy food boards described in detail, there is never a shortage of food when the characters in this series gather. Recipes for Salted Caramel Banana Pudding, Banana Walnut Bread, Summer Succotash, Bourbon Peach Ice Tea, Lavender Lemonade, and more are included in the back of the book. Each chapter also starts with a letter asking for advice from Sophie or Natasha and their fun replies.
The Diva Goes Overboard is a grand addition to this series and another Perfect Escape. I open the book and like Calgon, the story just takes me away. I am looking forward to book 18 already. My visits to Old Town Alexandria end too soon especially when I read the book all in one sitting. Until next year...
I voluntarily reviewed an Advance Reader Copy. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review. Thank you to the author, Kensington Cozies, and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC.
The Diva Goes Overboard by Krista Davis is the latest book in one of my favorite cozy series and it is excellent! In this series, event planner Sophie Winston and her friends get together and eat delicious meals while discussing the latest suspicious death in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia. Their rapport is so fun, it always makes me wish I could be a part of that friend group! Sophie's frenemy Natasha is as annoying as ever, but luckily doesn't overtake this book. Natasha and Sophie write competing advice columns and in this book the letters revolve around charcuterie and other types of food boards.
The mystery in this book is about an acquaintance of Sophie's who dies under suspicious circumstances at his engagement party - and leaves his antique store to her in his will! Sophie is shocked but determined to find out why she was the beneficiary and who was responsible for Orson's death. There are a few different twists and turns in this engaging cozy. The initial mystery is interesting, but then things really get intriguing when another bombshell drops about halfway through the book. This is a fast-paced fun read with a satisfying ending, even if one aspect was a little unrealistic.
There are recipes at the end if you would like to recreate some of the food and drinks that Sophie, Nina, Mars, and Bernie enjoyed in the story. I enjoy catching up with Sophie, but the book works fine as a standalone as well. 4.5 stars
I received an advance copy of this ebook from NetGalley, Kensington Books, and Kensington Cozies. My review is voluntary and unbiased.
Natasha's mother, Wanda, is getting married to wealthy businessman Orson Chatsworth and the senior couple hope for something simple but Natasha simply won't have it. Her mother needs the big wedding Natasha has always dreamed of but with only a few months to prepare, it's impossible to find a venue. Sophie finds the perfect spot for the engagement party, a new venue in the works owned by her new acquaintance Colin Warren. The place is still under construction when Sophie arrives and a grumpy old man tries to chase her away. Colin is eager to host the engagement party and appear on Natasha's TV show. Next, Sophie arranges for Orson's daughter, Stella, to cater the event with her custom charcuterie boards. With everything all settled, the party can go on and the happy couple toasted. Sophie is surprised when Orson pulls her aside and asks her to come by his antiques store as he has something he wants to ask her, privately. Sophie is curious but Orson dies before he can ask his question! Orson collapsed after drinking and eating at the party and Sophie suspects daffodil poisoning. His death was certainly not natural and neither is his will which leaves a BIG inheritance to Sophie! Everyone in town is gossiping in a nasty way as Sophie puzzles out why Orson left her his store. Soon she figures out his reason and she, Mars, Bernie and Nina must figure out Orson's big secrets. Sophie would also like to know who broke into the store and if it has any connection to Orson's death. Sophie isn't sure who to trust, only her closest friends, but she's determined to solve the murder and figure out Orson's other big secret.
As usual this mystery was top notch. There was a lot going on which is normally the case in this series but it ended up mostly being connected. I never guessed who! There are only 5 suspects and they all seemed too obvious. Sometimes the obvious solution is the best one. I thought one of the other people was the murderer but did suspect certain characters were up to no good.
I really liked Sophie's investigation in this one. She brings in her friends, including Wolf, and doesn't do anything stupid. I like how she's independent and confident. Sophie doesn't need a man in her life to be happy. She's comfortable being friends with Mars and Bernie as much as she's friends with Nina. She's still too nice for me. Mars is too nice too. I'm surprised they're divorced. Mars needed to stand up to Natasha a long time ago and he's paying for it now. She doesn't seem to understand they're not together and he doesn't like her. I don't think he ever did. Natasha is so selfish and whiny. Plenty of other people have the same background and don't whine about it the way she does. The only character I truly like is the one person who tells off Natasha. She doesn't listen. She doesn't want to hear it. All Natasha hears are the voices in her own head.
Nina and Francie really get into the investigating. I love that! Nina is a hoot. Nina's bequest was obvious even before Orson announced it. Rosebud seems sweet and she is happy with Muppet at Nina's. I think Nina made the wrong decision in the long run for Rosebud, unless Rosebud is a senior and then her decision makes sense. Mars and Bernie provide information and accompany Sophie at her request. This time they don't act macho and overprotective and Sophie manages to solve the crime without nearly getting killed. See, she's an adult, she can take care of herself! Wanda deserves happiness. Her needs are simple and she's content running her herb farm and herbal remedy business but she seems to love Orson. He'll be good to her and treat her like a queen while respecting her independence. Wanda is the only one who doesn't want Orson's money so even though they seem like a mismatch, I agree with Sophie that he's attracted to Wanda because she doesn't have her hand out. She's made it this far without much and business is starting to take off. She loves Orson because he's a good person. Depending on who you ask, anyway.
Orson was a doting father, if maybe a bit overprotective. He loved Stella with all his heart and finally, at the end of his life, he realized he had made mistakes. He always swooped in to save the day when she needed it and now she's struggling. He knows Stella needs to find her passion and land on her own two feet. However, because he adores his grandkids, he will provide for them in his own way. While his divorce wasn't amicable and we don't know the reason, he seems like he would have been a good husband too. Orson was a bit of a rascal when it came to his antiques business. His rival, Karl, is awful and unscrupulous. Karl hated Orson for playing tricks on him at auctions. Karl is maybe not as knowledgable about antiques as Orson and swindles people. Karl also doesn't have as much money even though his prices are outrageous. His shop is overcrowded and his living area shabby. Or maybe he's cheap and spends all his money on antiques. Did Karl murder Orson?
I didn't think Stella would murder her dad. She seemed nice at first but then after the bombshell video will, Stella acts like a *itch. I know she's grieving and Sophie is a stranger but has her dad ever let her down? He explained his reasons and they make sense. He left her a substantial inheritance in property and money for her kids' education. That's enough. Stella flip-flops between horrible and nice and back again. Her estranged husband, Jordan, certainly has the most motive for murder. He's a ne'er do well, lazy good for nothing who always has his hand out. He's an idle dreamer having tried and failed to open two restaurants. He wants a third chance but Stella wants a divorce and therefore, her father's money is out of Jordan's hands. He's angry and pretending he's a nice guy, attentive father and husband. Jordan wants Stella back to get his hands on the money. Did he murder Orson thinking Stella would get all the money and Jordan could take it? How dumb is this guy? From other things Sophie uncovers about him, I'm surprised he wasn't the one murdered.
Orson's ex-wife, Myra, is bitter about the divorce and even more so about Orson's bequest. (A hilarious one if you ask me). What does she need his money for? It sounds like she wanted it for her grandchildren and they got it in trust for their education. Their mother can work to provide for them. Wanda managed to care for Natasha with far less. Wanda is mean to Sophie and snippy at times. She's protective of her family so I don't think she's the murderer. She may have thought about it but how could she do that to the daughter she loves beyond belief and her beloved grandkids? They're cute kids but no one addressed the elephant in the room. How are they holding up? Do they know their grandpa was murdered? Do they even know he's dead and what that means? Obviously the baby doesn't and maybe the little girl but the oldest one might.
Orson was kind of cold to Audrey Evans, his former partner. However, as Sophie digs into their relationship I got the impression that Audrey is kind of a Natasha. She latched on to Orson and his money and he was too nice to send her packing. Audrey isn't very friendly or open with Sophie but she's a nurse. Would she kill someone? Her nephew, Tripp Fogarty, lives with her. His colleague, Joan Jankowski was hit over the head with a charcuterie board and died. He arrived just after Sophie and Nina discovered Joan and after Stella walked in. The timing would have to be very tight if he killed her. What motive did he have and how does that connect to Orson's death? Sophie adds Doreen Donahue to the suspect list. I feel sorry for Doreen. She learned to live by her wits at a young age and her mother didn't have a moral compass so Doreen was never taught what is right or wrong. She does seem to have some idea that what she's doing is wrong but not totally. She needs help. Bernie seems compassionate.
Colin Warren is nice to Sophie but a Natasha fan. He's eager for publicity to promote his new venue but Natasha?! His uncle Terry, on the other hand, is not so nice. He is not a people person and is more than rough around the edges. He's a bully and prejudiced against Sophie without checking to see who she is and what she wants. He just dismisses her because she's not construction crew and because she flashes a "fancy business card" he assumes is hers. Yeesh. He doesn't even know his own nephew has fancy business cards already? I say that is probably presumptuous of Colin. I don't trust these Warrens and think they may be involved in the case somehow. Terry's sister Sharon seems nice and her daughter, Bonnie, is chatty and friendly. Obviously not all the Warrens are horrible.
While this series isn't my top favorite, I enjoy Krista Davis's writing and will probably continue to read the series. None of the recipes in this one appealed to me.
I always look forward to a new Diva book from Krista Davis. As usual, this year's story doesn't disappoint. Sophie has just finished a big convention, and now she can relax and enjoy the engagement party Natasha is planning for her mom, Wanda, and her new fiance, Orson Chatsworth. Natasha has begged Sophie to help her find refreshment for the party and a venue for the wedding, using her connections, as they want the wedding in two months. When Orson seems to have a heart attack at the event, everyone is horrified. Sophie was upset because the antiques shop owner had asked her at the party to meet with him the next morning. While Sophie had bought an item or two in the shop, she couldn't understand why he would want to talk with her, and now she would never know! To add to Sophie's surprise she is asked to attend the reading of the will and is shocked to discover Orson has left the antique store to her and oh yes, it wasn't a heart attack, it was murder. Can Sophie find out why Orson left her the shop? What did he want her to figure out? Plus, who murdered Orson? You know Sophie and her crew are on the case, but this one has twists and turns that will take them in many different directions. You are going to want to be around for the ride. Thanks to #NetGalley and #Kensingtonbooks for the opportunity to catch up with Sophie and company.
There are books you look forward to reading simply because you love the characters and you cannot wait to see what shenanigans they will be getting up to next.
Such is the case with this series, one of my absolute favorites, that I've been reading since they were first published, and one where I wish I could be friends with all of them, even Natasha. I 've again, Krista Davis does not disappoint, and this was the comfy read I was in dire need of.
While this WAS a fun read, full of shenanigans [I just love Sophie and Nina working together, and am constantly reminded of the bestie and myself when WE get together], and yummy sounds g food, and a puzzling mystery, it was also VERY sad, and by the end, even though it was...I'm not sure happy is the right word, but the baddies have been caught, it also have me much food for thought, and this chapter in the series will be staying with me for some time.
Well done!!!
Thank you to NetGalley, Krista Davis, and Kensington Books for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Sophie is at it again, but this time she is literally thrust into the middle of the murder investigation by inheriting a business from someone she only knew passing at social events! Who is the killer? The ex-wife? The daughter? The daughter's soon to be ex? The ex-girlfriend? The ex-business partner or someone from a very distant past? The plot is deliciously woven with many twists, turns and potential red herrings....or are they??? I absolutely adore the characters in this series and while I usually wait for the audiobook, I was just too impatient so was thrilled to get my hands on a copy earlier than planned! The characters are well thought out and written in such a believable manner. You just know that they could be your friends and neighbors if only they were real! My only complaint is that once again, I devoured the book too quickly, so I am back to waiting for the author to write a new Diva book for us!
The Diva Goes Overboard is a cozy mystery that takes place in Old Town, Alexandria, VA. Natasha's mother is getting married to the town's successful antique shop owner, and Natasha is determined to make sure it's a wedding to never forget. Unfortunately, during the engagement party, the groom is murdered. Then, to add even more intrigue to the mystery, Orson has rewritten his will and left his store to Sophie. Now, even Sophie is a suspect in this murder.
This series has a huge cast of characters, and I found it a bit difficult to remember who everyone was and how they were all related. The relationships between some of the characters are also a bit confusing. Who are enemies, who are friends, who are frenemies, who are lovers, who used to be lovers, etc? I didn't find the overall mystery to be that gripping. In my opinion, while it was a major plot point, Orson's family drama/storyline simply did not add to the story. It actually made it more unbelievable. This is simply not a cozy series for me. I did love ALL of the recipes at the end! And it was fun to read about all the various boards.
#TheDivaGoesOverboard #NetGalley is a great addition to this fantastic series. Sophie and Natasha are back in this newest domestic diva mystery and it's guaranteed to make you laugh. Natasha's mother, the free spirited Wanda, is getting married and she's over the moon in love. Sophie is helping with the preparations, but when the soon to be groom suddenly collapses, Wanda is beside herself, and it seems everyone is a suspect. When Sophie is invited to the reading of the will, things become heated and it's up to Sophie and her friends to solve the mystery. This book is well done and I loved all the charcuterie board ideas. I'm always so happy to catch up with some of my favorite characters and I'm happy to recommend this book to others. Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for selecting me to read an advanced copy of the book.
I love this series and it is one I always recommend as it never disappoints.
We find Sophie once again being drug into a murder and sorting out all sides of it. And I do mean sides. There are extra twists and turns that keep one guessing. Or it did me at least.
The story plays out starting at an engagement party where something goes wrong. Thankfully Sophie has her friends to lend a hand. I really enjoy her sleuthing with Nina, who can add a funny element at times. Mars and Bernie are great help, too. The theme of this book involves boards of various nature. It was interesting to have them featured.
I highly recommend to someone who has been reading this series or if you are looking for mysteries, as there are several at play, and a great cast of characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington for allowing me to read this in exchange for a fair review.
Sophie Winston has been invited to an engagement party for Natasha's mother Wanda and Orson. Orson pulls Sophie aside and requests a meeting the next day at his antiques shop. As he is giving a toast he collapses and 911 is called. He dies at the hospital. Sophie is requested to be at his will reading. Sophie is named as the new owner of the antiques shop. Everyone including Sophie is shocked. As Sophie is trying to figure out why Orson left her the shop, she discovers a letter. Orson believes he was murdered and wants Sophie to investigate.
I loved following the clues with Sophie. The mystery was so good and I love when a cold case is included. I'm a big fan of this author and this series. The book made me so hungry. Sophie the Diva does it again.
It was great having a visit to Old Town Alexandria with Sophie and her friends again and of course seeing what newest craze Natasha came up with this time for her business. She’s like a pesky relative who doesn’t really mean any harm, but everything she does is always about her lol. Sometimes she’s a real train wreck waiting to happen 😂. I’m not lying, wait’ll you read the scene that has to do with water.
Sophie and her pals had one heckuva of a mystery to solve this time and nothing was adding up…until it did and Sophie was able to figure out what happened. Orson was a smart man to leave her what he did and make that request he made. There was definitely plenty of suspects and a pretty cool twist was discovered toward the end.
The usual explanation session I’ve come to love about this series (along with them brainstorming along the way) was with Sophie and her close friends which always means including Wolf and his update of the case at hand. And Sophie’s always right in her element when she had a party for everyone and gets to take care of their food needs. She might not have actual kids of her own but over these seventeen books she’s definitely taken on a mom role more than once.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an ARC of this book provided by Kensington Cozies via NetGalley, and my opinions are my own.
This book is full of good food, friends and the unavoidable demise of someone. I honestly thought there was so much attention given to the food and the characters were almost always eating! I wondered how they did not get full with the constant munching.
For a cozy, this plot was pretty intricate but done very well. Orson Chatsworth, a rich man in town who seems to be kind to everyone, has announced his engagement to Wanda, a woman into homeopathy and crystals. Sophie Winston, our protagonist, seems to know everyone in town and is invited to the engagement party. Orson is unfortunately murdered during the festivities and Sophie is given the unexplained inheritance of his antique shop and instructions that "Sophie will know what to do." She starts puzzling pieces together and the suspect pool is, while not large, consistent mostly of people close to Orson.
I thought the overarching story of the book was great. I love their friend group in the book, it's like sitting down with friends after a long absence and picking up where you left off. The addition of multiple furry creatures adds to the delight of the story.
I adore these Diva mysteries and look forward to more in the future.
My thanks to Kensington Cozies and Netgalley for this ARC.
This was a great addition to the Domestic Diva Mystery series! I loved following Sophie as she worked to solve the murder of antiques dealer, Orson in this cozy mystery. I love the characters in this series and I really liked getting to know them more each book. There were plenty of twists and turns in this mystery to keep me guessing throughout the story. This book also comes with many delicious sounding recipes that I can’t wait to try out.
Thank you to @kristadavisauthor for sending me an advanced copy of this book.
What a fun read! MC Sophie unexpectedly inherits an antique store after the owner dies at his engagement party (bride-to-be is the earth mamma Wanda, Natasha’s mother), with much envy and anger from many in Old Town Alexandria’s descriptions of charcuterie and other food boards will make you seek out snacks..
Multiple twists and turns, a lost child (now an adult), and it all comes together in a fun and quick read. Do not read this book on an empty stomach, as the descriptions of charcuterie and other food boards in this book will make you hungry!
I started reading these books because I won this one in a giveaway and they are very silly but also so baffling?? I swear 2 people MINIMUM get murdered each book and nobody bats an eye. The cooking and decor references are always ridiculous but this book in particular had a truly infuriating number of references to charcuterie/butter boards/food assembled on a board. I know they were having a moment when the book was written, but they already feel dated and the fact that nobody seemed to eat anything else the whole book was too much
Style maven Sophie helps her frenemy and competitor Natasha arrange Natasha's mother's engagement party to a prominent antiques dealer--but he dies at the event. Tragic, sure, but less surprising than his leaving his shop and its valuable contents to Sophie, which leaves her as one of the suspects when the police realize he was murdered. All she can think is that he wanted her to do something after he wasn't around to do it himself--but what?
4.5 Stars An addition to a long-standing cozy mystery series, this novel was the first I've read from the Diva books (it can easily be read in order or as a stand-alone). Although there were a couple of editing errors, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the characters were interesting, the storyline entertaining, and the food sounded yummy! It's quirky and engaging, from the colorful cast of characters, delicious recipes, advice column blurbs at the start of each chapter, and the antiques. There were so many potential suspects, the mystery plot was difficult to guess as well. I'll definitely give e this series a try.
Another great entry in this series!! It is so much fun to get a chance to revisit all the characters who have populated this series over the years. Sophie has plenty of red herrings and odd directions to follow to figure out who killed the antiques dealer in Old Town. From Natasha trying to up her game, to Sophie talking about playing matchmaker for Wong, this book had everything I always love about the series.
I absolutely love this series! This was another fanatically fun trip to Old Town with Sophie and her friends to solve yet another murder. As always I cannot wait for the next one!
Sophie is drawn into the death of Wanda's fiance at their engagement party. The sudden death ends up being murder and Sophie and friends are on the case. Sophie gets even more involved when she inherits the man's antique store. So many questions and suspects! There are lots of charcuterie boards in the story and they all sound wonderful! Sophie and friends get to the bottom of everything and the killer is revealed. Loved this visit with Sophie and friends. A good read and plenty to keep the reader engaged throughout the book. Great recipes as well. I received an ARC of this book in exchange for a review.
