“His name had been Henry, but I had always called him baby Hal. He had been granted the title of Duke of Cornwall upon his birth, and he would have been the future King of England, had he lived. His name had been Henry. And though he has passed on, I beg of you… Please…remember my son.”
Katherine of Aragon has been living in limbo for seven years while her marriage to Prince Harry of England is being arranged. Seven years in which she has been left to starve and fend for herself while Henry VII and her father Ferdinand de Aragon squabble over her marriage dowry.
But when Henry VII dies and Prince Harry is proclaimed the new King of England – Henry VIII – Katherine’s future is bright once again, her troubles and sorrows undoubtedly in her past.
But her brush with grief is anything but over, and in the months that follow her coronation, Katherine is faced with unimaginable heartache and loss. A loss so disastrous it will reshape history as we know it.
Leah Toole is a captivating historical storyteller, bringing the past to life with her vivid narratives and meticulous research. With an educational background in History, English Literature, and English Language, Toole's passion and dedication is clear, and since publishing her debut novel "The Saddest Princess" she has gone on to write several more books on the Tudor era, which have received praise from all over the world. Outside of work, Leah Toole, as a wife and mother of two, enjoys spending time with her family, as well as reading, and maintaining her thriving TikTok platform, where she shares educational and entertaining Tudor history content.
The heartbreaking tale of Katherine of Aragon’s great losses. It doesn’t take a historical fiction to dislike Henry VIII, but Leah Toole somehow enhances that dislike of him that we all know already. She paints a clear image of the pain he causes and allows the reader to empathise further with his wives and acquaintances. A good end to the series!
Henry, Duke of Cornwall, is often forgotten in the history books as the poor young prince who died 52 days after he was born.
King Henry VIII had his heir and tragedy struck so soon after. I feel for both Henry and Katherine having suffered so much loss between their marriage and the loss of their son.
Katherine and Henry really seemed to have this loving marriage but Henry who was young and impressionable. He was encouraged to take a mistress despite not wanting to because of his commitment to his wife.
It breaks my heart the way reading this and knowing how Henry’s marriage to Catherine unfolds.
This book! Seeing how Henry and Katherine were in the early years of marriage surprised me. They seemed to be so in love and committed to each other. Then everything changed after baby Hal. I wanted to jump in the pages and hug the queen during her heartaches. I have never felt that loss and pray I never do, but I know so many women that have lost their precious babies. Thank you, Leah for dedicating this book to all the mothers out there who feel this pain. You are an amazing author and I have throughly loved this series!
I think this was good for being a novella and I am happy I read it. It’s hard to believe Henry Vlll would have had love for anyone especially his first wife, the way he did when they were first married.
This book is beautifully written. Leah Toole conveys Katherine's grief at the loss of her babies so vividly that the reader cannot help but feel her anguish. In addition to this thread of the story, the author includes many fascinating tidbits about life at the Tudor court and women's place in it. She also presents real insight into the beginning of Katherine and Henry's marriage, beyond the political reality of an alliance with Spain. I haven't read the other books in this series but I loved this one and highly recommend it for all Tudor fans.
tender and vivid descriptions expanding our usual picture of this segment of Henry and Katherine
I recommend this book to any and all fans of the period from Henry the eighth through his sixth wife Catherine Parr and through the reign of Elizabeth I
This broke my heart. It’s so beautifully written, so tragic… such a lovely ending to The Tudor Heirs series. It was refreshing to read a Tudor book on the prince we forgot, as well as relive Catherine and Henry’s love story, that people forget happened.
I have read this series from the start and let me just say that every book has been an emotional rollercoaster.
In this book what I like most is the portrayal of Henry VII n Elizabeth of Yorks marriage following Arthur’s death along with the portrayal of baby Hal’s death.
If you are a fan of the Tudors this series is one to read especially if you are interested in the lives of Henry VIII heirs.
I am breaking the rules and reading in order of the children of Henry VIII and when they were born to understand the chronology of events better.
Toole uses her authorial license to change some events well whilst also remaining authentically respectful to the Tudor period and the vast history attached to it that we know. I love the additional information and insight she provides that adds meaning to a part of history so well known.
I bought one book to try and bought the remaining 4 within half an hour of reading! A wonderful perspective.
Another Amazing Read! I have read all the books in Leah’s series of Henry VIII heirs and each one gets better and better. Can’t wait to see what is next for Leah!
I cried like a baby whilst reading this book. The raw emotion that Leah expertly displays from Catherine of Aragon is heart-wrenching. This book is impossible to put down.
This book was in keeping with the rest of the Tudor heir series. Such an interesting look at Katherine of Aragon and Henry the 8ths love story and how they came to be. It made me reminisce on moments in the previous books in the series and it fills me with more heart ache for the choices Henry made later in life. Beautiful writing as usual! And had me sobbing - just a beautiful honest heart wrenching take on baby loss.
The end to the Tudor Heir’s books was the better written novel of the series. I will not lie, I kept waiting for Toole’s twist that she always throws in for these novels. I did not expect to get to it where it was, but for that I am rather glad.
A quick read, take with a grain of salt when it comes to the authors history.
Fantastic end to a brilliant series on the tudor era. My favourite in the series for sure! Very interesting to read about Henry VIII before the Great Matter consumed him
Wow, Leah has done it again with this beautifully written story of the prince no one talks or even knows about. She deals with the subject matter of child loss in the most respectful way, The book is about Henry, Duke of Cornwall, and often forgotten in the history books as the poor young prince who died 52 days after he was born. It breaks my heart the way reading this and knowing how Henry's marriage to Catherine ended. It was such amazing book and it was beautifully written. I gave this book 5/5 stars!
