Young Mathematicians at Constructing Fractions, Decimals, and Percents focuses on children in grades 5–8 as they construct deep understandings of Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. Catherine Twomey Fosnot and Maarten Dolk focus on the development of big ideas and define mathematics as "mathematizing"— structuring, modeling, and interpreting the world mathematically. They show how rich contexts promote inquiry, problem solving, and construction, that let children pursue mathematical ideas.
Cathy Fosnot is a leading voice in mathematics education. She is Professor Emerita of Education at the City College of New York and the founder of Mathematics in the City, a national center for professional development located at the college. In 2007 she established New Perspectives on Learning to devote her time to speaking around the world, fostering school change through professional learning and support, and producing new resources and materials.
This book is amazing - any of this series is great - and the whole "mathematizing" approach is truly awesome. This book had a huge impact on how I think about math and I'm incredibly excited to read more of their work.
Leído en inglés. Este libro muestra la enseñanza de las fracciones desde el punto de vista de la matemática realista (freudenthal). Contiene numerosos ejemplos y casos reales.
