Since the middle of the 20th century, advancing technological developments have led to a considerable increase in technical communication, especially in the form of technical documentation, which has also led to a considerable increase in technical translation due to the forces of globalisation. In North America, technical communication and translation are regarded as professions with their own core competences and separate university degrees, but in Europe only technical translation is (fairly) well-established while the profession of technical communication is still rather new and relatively invisible (Minacori and Veisblat 2010).
