Damien Echo is a street-smart psychic scammer who takes advantage of vulnerable people. But when she meets an elderly client to help locate the woman’s missing dog, the Ouija board shoots out a plea for help along with an address, and this time Damien hasn’t done anything to manipulate the pointer. She checks it out and discovers what appears to be a suicide victim inside an unlocked apartment, as well as a carefully hidden cellphone that Damien steals.

Detective Jamie Wallace is a Homicide detective with the Rideau Regional Police in Canada’s capital. Valerie Sanderson’s death looks like a suicide, given the lack of forensic evidence, but Jamie’s gut tells her the woman was murdered and so do her visions. All she knows for sure, though, is that either the victim actually killed herself or there’s a particularly sophisticated killer who’s hidden their tracks.

As Jamie and Detective Michel Tremblay investigate the woman’s death, Jamie soon discovers that all the information she needs to solve the case is on a cellphone that she and Tremblay can’t find. And the only person who can help her reconstruct the missing data is a ruthless killer himself.

Ottawa boxer, Peggy Blair, has scored another knockout with her latest thriller “Double Vision”and cemented her standing as Canada’s top crime writer.

This is the second (after Shadow Play) in Blair’s Jamie Wallace series. New readers will want to read Shadow Play first as there are a number of references to the earlier book that might be confusing otherwise. Double Vision brings back most of the central characters and their relationships deepen and are provided greater complexity. .

This is a fun quick read (just over 300 pages) and the plot keeps a fast pace and sustained interest. Jamie Wallace is a detective with the Ottawa police force who solves a murder that others has passed off as a suicide. Slava Kadun, a hit man for Putin, appears again from Shadow Play to add an element of international intrigue. He is the guardian of one of the books most likable characters, Lena, who is a genius at manipulating information technology and she amazes with her ability to break into any system globally. Blair builds on this to provide keen insights into many of the scams taking place today.

The sophisticated clever plot is on a par with those of the best known crime authors but Blair has no need to pad her stories with artificial “Perils of Pauline” drama. Nor does she have a need to resort to gratuitous violence and sex. The great attraction is Blair’s use of regular people, just like you and me, as her main characters. She draws out their strengths and weaknesses and good and bad qualities. She provides sympathetic background on current social issues such as the homeless.

The plot is intricate but knits together seamlessly and is plausible. I could not guess how the plot would resolve.

Those who might turn their nose up at this book because it is “self-published” will be missing a treat. Blair’s Inspector Ramirez series was published by Penguin Canada and Simon and Schuster Canada before she began self-publishing. Her novels were published in Canada, US and UK and then translated/published in Norway, Germany, the Netherlands, Israel and the Czech Republic. The publishing world has changed and Blair has seized the day to forge a new path. Not only has she mastered the art of self publishing but is reaching out to other authors with a “lessons learned” series of YouTube videos on various aspects of self-publishing – (search “Peggy Blair” on YouTube).

The book is available from reboundpress.com as are some of her earlier works now out of print.

I knew I wasn’t starting on the first book of the series, but I had no trouble getting into it regardless. I enjoyed Double Vision and its twists, and liked Damien as a character best.

There were so many references to the Ottawa setting and recent events throughout, which could feel like being given directions rather than immersing me more into the story. There is, however, still a charm in recognising precisely where and when things are taking place. Covid? I lived through that. The convoy? I saw it too, etc.

I’ll surely pick up another of Peggy’s books next opportunity I get.

An excellent follow-up to Shadow Play as we observe the development of Detective Jamie Wallace. This is a great read for lovers of Crime/Mystery novels that pulls in the procedural elements of police investigation. Lots of twists to keep the reader guessing and hints that there might be more to come. Highly recommended!

Just finished it a few minutes ago. Loved it so much that even though I don’t leave reviews, I felt compelled to leave one for Shadow Play (set immediately before this one) and this most excellent sequel. But this one will be hard to beat. Again, complex plot and nuanced characters, plenty of twists, and a stunningly satisfying ending. Hoping there are many more to come.

Just finished reading Double Vision and - wow! I really didn't want it to end. Love the characters (so happy it's a series), the strong sense of place, the intrigue... and all those twists! The perfect follow-up to Shadow Play. I'm looking forward to the next in the series. Highly recommended.

If you think you know whodunit, keep reading because you're probably mistaken.
My favourite think about a Peggy Blair mystery is that you can never be certain of what will come next. Can't wait to dig into the next mystery "The Bonefinder"!
