AGGRAVATING ALCHEMY While in Firan, Natsu's gang and friends from Sabertooth roam around the town in search of clues about Athena. However, when it's time to meet up and discuss what they found, only Natsu and the Sabertooth wizards show up. It seems Firan is Gold Owl's home turf, and the mysterious alchemists are conspiring to capture Fairy Tail wizards!
Hiro Mashima (Jap: 真島ヒロ) is a Japanese manga artist.
He gained success with his first serial Rave, published in Kodansha's Weekly Shōnen Magazine from 1999 to 2005. His best-selling work, Fairy Tail, published in the same magazine from 2006 to 2017, became one of the best-selling manga series with over 72 million copies in print. Mashima began the currently ongoing Edens Zero in 2018.
Fairy Tail won the Kodansha Manga Award for shōnen manga in 2009, and Mashima was given the Harvey Awards International Spotlight award in 2017 and the Fauve Special Award at the 2018 Angoulême International Comics Festival.
There's an amount I could just copy-paste the relevant part of my review for Kaiju No. 8, Vol. 11, since why reinvent the wheel? The thing about Fairy Tail is the fights are almost always the same, with just enough subversion to make the series interesting enough that I've kept ALL THE BOOKS despite the sameness.
Actually, I kind of like that—even though this part of the series is a different main artist, Mashima still has his hands in it enough to keep the feel of the series the same. (I haven't been interested enough in spin-offs like Fairy Girls after getting sort of burned on spin-offs like My Hero Academia: Vigilantes and That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime: Trinity in Tempest... not that they're BAD as such, but... not as good as the source material.
Anyway, there are some funny moments in this volume that make it worth reading, like when Natsu starts to feel like the members of Sabertooth resembled members of Fairy Tail, and Frosch leans so heavily into it when Natsu compared him to Carla that he starts to answer to Carla (much to Carla's bewilderment when they meet again), or the fact that the battles in this volume are all won ! That's kind of neat, considering what series this is!
Then the cliffhanger throws that away, but I guess I should've seen that coming.
A good volume, but I'm absolutely going to forget what I read in a week.
The volume picks up directly as the members of Fairy Tail are kidnapped by the Gold Owl alchemist guild. Natsu will use Sabertooth’s help to save all his friends, which will lead to multiple fights. Honestly, the fights weren’t outstanding, but it was at least a little bit fun to see people use magic (well… alchemy) differently than we’re used to. I do really love to see more of Sabertooth, especially Sting, who was insanely cute in this volume.
There's not a lot of character development in this volume, as it truly focuses mainly on the fights. We do have Lucy showing off her power way more easily than she used to, and she’s become such a strong wizard. I love that, no matter how strong she's become, we still get to see the Lucy she was since the beginning, always preferring talking down her enemies instead of just fighting pointlessly. I just truly love her.
I thought Natsu running to save Lucy or Ezra and Jellal being literally stuck together would get us a little relationship development, but we only got crumbs of these two. Sometimes, I kind of wish everything wasn't so slow burn, but it wouldn't be Fairy Tail if any of the relationships were easy.
This was a weird volume for me, cause it's not slow by any means, like a ton was happening, but it felt like I read through it really leisurely? It was a weird sensation, I don't know how to describe it.
Regardless, it's not my favourite volume, but it has a lot of redeeming factors (looking at you Lucy and JelZa). The fighting will be cool once it's an anime, this one has lots of kabooms in it, it's crazy. It almost feels like it's out of the Key of the Starry Sky arch from the OG. It's also really nice to get some side characters in (Fro things so too). I've missed Sabertooth.
But that ending. The hope dashed. I'm like AAAAH and the next one isn't out for months still. Send help.
