Colette Rhodes is a paranormal romance author from New Zealand. She loves to write about love in all its forms, and adores imperfect heroes and heroines who find perfection in each other. You’ll often find her trying to justify her degree by including ancient history and mythological influences in her work.
If she’s not writing, then you’re almost certain to find her reading—ideally with a cup of tea in hand and a scented candle burning to match the mood.
what could’ve been the best book and couple ended up being a disappointment😔💔 generously rating this 3 stars
✅miscommunication or zero communication ✅focused on side plot rather than the couple ✅predictable situations ✅first %40 smut without genuine conversations
~~~ WE ARE BACKKKKK TO MY FAVORITE MONSTER WORLDDDDD GIMME MORE SHADOW DADDIES 😋🤭🥰‼️
WHAT TO EXPECT: ✨ book 5 (standalone) ✨ monster romance ✨ shades x hunters ✨ both MCs are adorable, lonely introverts ✨ MMC is ostracized bc of his appearance ✨ one night stand to friends to benefits ✨ miscommunication ✨ 3/5 spice ✨ mates ✨ size difference ✨ ✨ political intrigue ✨ high(er) stakes ✨ HEA
My Thoughts:
Tallulah and Evrin are the most adorable pair in all the realm! They give off such golden retriever vibes but both are lonely and just want to be loved for who they are. 🥺 I enjoyed that even though their relationship starts with a one night stand, it was grounded in acceptance and trust, and their friendship only develops from there. They're definitely one of my top three couples!
The smut was super hot! I really enjoyed these spicy scenes. I do wish there were more though. 🙈
The only thing I didn't love about them was that their conflict centered on miscommunication, which should have easily been cleared up since they open up to each other and become relatively good friends. They both wanted the same thing, and while I understood why Evrin and Tallulah were afraid to share, the hurt they experienced because of this was a bit drawn out and frustrating.
I enjoyed learning even more about the shade realm (familiar dynamics and culture), and that there was further plot progression in regards to the shade and hunter conflict. However, some of the story was a little hard to follow unless you recently read the previous books. There were characters and situations relevant to the plot that were mentioned but not quite introduced or explained, which brought me out of the story a few times.
Overall, this was a great addition to the Shades of Sin series and I can't wait for the next book!
Audio: 4.5 stars for Rachel Leblang 4.5 stars for Will Throne
Book: 3 stars
Not as good as the other books. I don’t think these two had the same spark as the other couples! I know that Meera’s book is next and it doesn’t have great reviews haha! But I am reading it no matter what.
no matter what anyone says, horn size DOESN’T matter
MAIN CHARACTER NAMES AND AGES Tallulah Thibaut (30) | Evrin (?)
FEATURES ∘ fantasy romance (shade/shadow-esque mmc) ∘ one-night-stand turned into friends with benefits ∘ miscommunication ∘ mate bond
REVIEW This story had a lot of potential. I love the premise of a (perceived) ugly man getting the woman that everyone is obsessed with but nobody knows. I was disappointed in the chemistry, as it fell a bit flat due to them instantly getting together and spending a significant time not actually being together.
As for as the story outside of the relationship, I didn’t fully understand what was happening with the Hunters, yet the third act conflict felt repetitive due to previous books having a similar plotline. I would’ve given up had I not read the previous books in the series. The glimpse of other characters helped pull me through, but it wasn’t enough.
Ultimately, I mostly read it out of an obligation to myself, and perhaps that’s the worst reason to read a book.
To end on a positive note: I thought the epilogue was very sweet.
OW/OM DRAMA minor OM — Tallulah is forced on dates, but she doesn’t enjoy them and Evrin just wants her to be happy CHEATING none THIRD ACT BREAKUP sort of not really — they end their friends with benefits situation but reconcile shortly after ENDING HEA — months later epilogue
POV dual / first person SPICE LEVEL 4 / 5 RATING 3 / 5
This was so cute!! I love Evrin, my poor baby! 😭😭 I hate the way everyone treated him and how he had to just accept it over time. It broke my heart 💔
I related to Tallulah and her anxiety that she tried so hard to hide behind her bubblyness. Evrin was perfect for her and I loved the calming effect he had on her.
The only reason I couldn’t give it a 5⭐️ was because of the miscommunication! It drove me mad! 🙄 I understood where they were both coming from, but fucking hell, just talk to each other!
The ending was great and we finally got our first interspecies baby!! 🍼
2.5 rounded up because i love this series with my whole heart but this was just so BORINGGGGGG
i didn’t know what to expect but it wasn’t the main couple not even being together or even really interacting together for the majority of the book.
and come ON why was the H such a beta. the trauma and reasoning behind him wanting to “protect” her from being a pariah wasn’t explained until like the end and he just never fought for her. SHE had to make the move and tell him she liked him and i just don’t like that.
i was also hoping the pregnancy would have been more in the story. i love surprise pregnancy but she just says she’s pregnant, the conflict happens, and then she’s giving birth in the epilogue 😭😭😭😭
i will still be reading the rest of the series, this one was just a letdown after Verity’s book
Tallulah and Evrin were terrible at communicating with each other, but had their reasons for being that way. Tallulah had an anxiety disorder and Evrin had a lifetime of being shunned. Friends with benefits made sense for them, though I wanted to shake them for not being a little more brave. It was nice to see them grow together and gain some confidence.
Spice: 4/5
Triggers: kidnapping, confinement, threat of death, drugging (off page), pregnancy, panic attack, bullying, shunning for appearance, violence, gore, death
My favorite thing about this series is how easy it is to connect with the characters. The author has a way of pulling readers right into the story and seeing something of ourselves in the struggles they go through.
Tallulah and Evrin are each other's safe space. They can let down their guard and truly see one another. Evrin is one of the most devoted lovers, quick to notice when Tallulah needs something, and he will melt even the coldest of hearts with his concern and care for her. Tallulah has a hard time figuring out why Evrin holds back, but once she realizes the full picture, there is no hesitation in making him hers. I love her fierce protectiveness of others, especially Evrin. They're a perfect match from the first time they meet.
I think Evrin is my favourite Shade yet! I really love his insecure but really cute self. I couldn’t put the book down and stayed up wayyy too late so I could finish 😝
This is the first book in the series where I’d say it’s harder to read it if you haven’t already at least read Avaritia (and probably the other ones too if you want the full experience and know all the couples). The timeline in this one overlaps with some of the other books, which makes it make a bit more sense if you’ve read those already. So I wouldn’t recommend this one as a standalone.
Spoiler: There is pregnancy in this book. As someone who loves this trope, I felt like it was just a bit mentioned more than it felt really integrated in the book. It wasn’t the main subject of the book, it’s just there and there’s a couple conversations about it and then the birth (non-gory) in the epilogue. So I wouldn’t recommend it if you want full on pregnancy trope, but I’d also say not to go out of your way to avoid the book if you don’t like the trope.
Re-read 2025: Okay, it says a lot that this is the second time in less than a year that I’ve listened to this one 😍.
2024: There could literally be HUNDREDS of books in this series, and I think I would read all of them happily 😍. I haven’t been this obsessed with a series and characters since Ice Planet Barbarians!
I absolutely LOVED Everin and Tallula together, they’re definitely a top favorite couple for me (which is super hard when they’re all so great 🥰). Everin was just the sweetest, and I loved that I didn’t have to wait till the end of the book for them to get together. Also loved that their relationship started off with friendship and a bang 😏🔥. There was a major miscommunication, but it thankfully didn’t last long enough to be TOO frustrating, and once again, this book had the PERFECT amount of tension in the climax, i.e., not enough to make me stressed or anxious 😝. Ms. Rhodes is just so good at that in this series: her climaxes are the perfect amount of tension.
Also, FINALLY, I got to see a hunter/shade baby!! Eeeeeeehhhh!!! 💕
Will Thorne’s narration is also, of course, still top notch 👌. But now there won’t be another audiobook for a while 😭😭😭😭.
I’m back and forth between 2 and 3 stars on this one. Avaritia was just so good and this one sadly was not as funny. It was a quick read and enjoyable. I’m not a big fan of the miscommunication trope and that is really what the story is centered around. The look into more of the Hunter/Shade politics was fun though and added more substance to the world.
Tallulah is one of the original exp hunters that came to the shadow realm with Astrid at the end of the first book. Beautiful but insecure and filled with anxiety she just never feels like she truly belongs. She didn't belong at home under the control of her wealthy and powerful grandfather and she's worries she may never find her place her in the shadows . one night her anxiety takes over and she end up in the garden where she meets Evrin. Evirn is the Guard of the in between he's handsome strong and calm. But no one seems to like him in fact they seem repulsed by him. He sees Tallulah and speaks to her and he holds her and that's when his life changes forever. He's been told all his life that he different and not worthy but all he wants to be is worthy for Tallulah but he's worried if he courts her that He'll ruin her reputation. Can both of them put aside their insecurities and fight for each other? Or will they both let the love of a life time fade into nothing? You have got to read and find out! This series is fabulous and each book just gets better and better! I want a shade of my very own and so will you! Highly recommend🌟💖🔥🌟💖🔥💖🌟🔥🌟💖🔥💖🌟🔥🌟💖🔥💖🌟🔥💖
One of the best things that has happened to me was being an arc readers for Colette. Another thing is her writing this monster series…I swear it’s one of my most favorite things ever! Adding Tallulah and Evrin to the list as one of my favorite couples!
“—and I need you to let me keep you. Let me care about you.” Her smile grew a little shaky. “If you could just need me the way I need you, that would be perfect.”
Ughh the sweetness and the angst was top tier in this but also getting spice in chapter one is always amazing!!! I loved getting to see all the other characters but also getting to learn more about Tallulah and meeting sweet Evrin.
2.5 ⭐️ the miscommunication bored me and the plot seemed to move too fast, which made it lack any real depth. This is still an okay guilty pleasure series and I’ll continue it, but it’s not my fav.
The miscommunication was soooooo frustrating. It was understandable to degree, but if anyyyy communication had happened it could have been cleared up instantly.
Also didn't like how the first 40% took place during the events of the previous books. It didn't feel like a new perspective, just retelling of events. Idk, I did think the relationship and feelings progressed fairly naturally, it just felt very predictable plot wise and a bit summarized at times.
Tallulah lives her life wearing a mask, hoping to fit in. Evrin hides in the shadows knowing he never will. A chance encounter brings them together but neither thinks they are worthy of the other. Hopefully one of them will find the courage to move their FWB situationship to a real relationship.
Yes you will want to reach through the book and shake these two for not just having a conversation, but I also totally get it. Being vulnerable and opening your heart to rejection is terrifying.
3.7 stars. Very like-able characters and interesting that this story runs concurrently with some of the other series books. I am still so in love with the last book in this series that I read that any follow up would seem like it was lacking.
I am so disappointed their story has ended and I have to wait for the next one. I absolutely love this series and I loved the connection between Tallulah and Evrin. I am very curious who the next book will be about. I got my eyes on a couple...
