Rebecca Saint James, or Mouse to her only friend, is about to graduate from high school. She is looking forward to a dismal life at the bottom of the food chain. Then her boss at the store she works for asks her to take a fill in job as a gofer at the corporate office. She is afraid she will not be able to do the job. There she meets Michael. He is so kind and handsome. She is terrified she will not be able to measure up to the standards at his corporate office. Michael takes her under his wing and for the first time in her life someone besides her friend treats her with kindness. Then Michael discovers Rebecca’s home life. Michael cannot stand to see her treated the way her family treats her. Michael offers her something. Something Rebecca cannot believe he would want from her. It is a chance Rebecca throws herself into. Rebecca watches as the people around her change over the next few weeks. Are they changing or is it her perceptions of their actions. Could Michael be right? Could she become the strong confident women he promised she would be? Could Michael save the mouse?
Sean M. Campbell was born in Southern California. His interest in reading and writing started at an early age. He always found himself thinking, "How would I write that differently."
He attempted to write his first novel length work when he was in high school, but always felt his writing was not good enough for others to read. He continued to write the occasional story for himself or family members, but never even attempted to get any of them published.
At the age of 47, someone convinced him to post a story on a website and get some unbiased opinions on his work. Within days of posting the first chapter he was contacted by the publisher, Abby Adams, and asked if they could publish his first novel, "The Return".
This is an unsettling version of a ‘Cinderella’ story I received in exchange for an honest review. With some major adjustments, (including an edit focusing on dialogue punctuation and style) I think I’d enjoy this book, the kernel of a caring relationship is there, and there are insights into her thought processes. The latter part of the story where a family member was out to get her was perhaps the best part, although I did find it difficult to swallow that for the vast majority of the story, Mouse thought her childhood was ‘normal’. However, the time frame and early introduction of the BDSM theme turns it into a case of out of the frying pan and into the fire for the poor main character ‘Mouse’. I’d also have to vote for the author to remove at least ¾ of the exclamation marks and the constant endearments in every line of dialogue and working on the sex scenes. All in all for a book with a strong sexual component, these scenes are one of the things that let it down for me. The effortless multiple orgasms (and of course she’d never had even one before she met him) become almost laughable as she seemingly comes from virtually any touch (even a foot tickle) or just from him speaking a few words. She also ‘squirts’ every time she comes – she should be wearing incontinence pants to save the furniture and his suits which she ‘soaks’ on a regular basis. He also brings in another woman for fun and games and gives her multiple orgasms too, even though it took her a year to have one with her last boyfriend. Then again, the author is male so maybe a straight woman I didn't appreciate this author's fantasy. Essentially, ‘Saving Mouse’ is the story of a man with the ability and wealth to help a victim of profound mental, physical and emotional child abuse. However, the introduction of BDSM and ‘slavery’ by said ‘saviour’ almost from the very beginning was significantly disturbing. I like a good kinky story, but there is no indication that Mouse is a masochist, yet she is almost forced straight into a relationship with a sadistic dominant. The author would have the reader believe that Michael is not abusive because hr is doing it for her own good. Which is just what her parents told her. One of the primary pillars of BDSM is that it must be consensual, but this traumatised, isolated and naive young girl is simply not capable or able to make such a decision. Three days after meeting her, (and Michael only waits that long because of doctor’s orders as she has skull micro-fractures form being hit) he takes her virginity and is impressed that she can deep throat him without a problem. This is because she was beaten and made to eat her own vomit if she threw up by her parent. He thinks her high pain threshold makes her the ideal slave, although he is frequently moved to tears when he hears some of the things her family has done to her. His psyche is revealed when one of his ex-submissives asked how he can spank Mouse because it would be like kicking a puppy. He replies that he knows that she sees love and pain as the same thing, so how could he not do it? It would be like not giving the birthday girl ice-cream at her own party. I certainly didn’t understand that to help her recover from many years of violent and cruel abuse, instead of taking her to a counsellor for victims of child abuse, Michael considers tying her up and beating her with various implements as the most suitable therapy. Although she does seem to like it, hence the squirting.
A very nice story of how an abused girl changed into a roaring tigress when pushed too far. This girl makes her new Dom realize that not only ultra shy when they meet, but, due to her physical abuse, can take more discipline than he can give her. (Everything he does makes her cum!) When her brother starts hurting and killing people to get to her, she's afraid of him. But after he kidnaps her and claims to have killed her Dom, her lover, she KICKS his butt! This is a story of how a girl grows from shy and afraid of her own shadow, to being a strong and confident woman who is learning to take control of her own destiny. This is not a story for the faint of heart. There are serious moments mixed with the love and sex; some people died on page. Still this was a good read, and I do recommend it.
