It's official - Gail Simone's run starts off EPIC.

This is the kinda stuff I LOVE.

It's Wonder Woman, it's gods, it's her friends, it's inherent feminism without shouting the message. It's merciful Wonder Woman, showing both her human and godly sides in equal measure.

Honestly, the difference between women writing WW and men writing WW is insane. It's so much more nuanced and Simone does it PERFECTLY.

There's plenty of action, and a continuing story underneath shorter stories, so it's easy to follow along without getting too bogged down. There is mystery without it being hard to follow, and there are layers slowly being peeled back as the story progresses.

The artwork is gorgeous, and the details are wild. The style and presentation works perfectly with the story to show all the little things that might otherwise be lost.

I absolutely loved this one. I don't think it needed the first two short chapters, but they were still fun additions.

Absolutely recommend this for any WW fan. Now to find the rest of her run!

I’m not a huge fan of WW, the only story I really enjoyed was “Origins and Omens.” There is a lot of confusing dialogue and weird panel cuts that make some of the stories almost unreadable.

It was OK, but I was expecting something else honestly. Too much focus on fights and punches and pantheon stuff that doesn't make much sense. The last saga is sooo long and it's just battle after battle. I think it begins better than it ends. It has good artists overall though!

A wonderful collection (pun intended) of Gail Simone's fun, exciting, and often thoughtful run on the Amazing Amazon (shortly before having all her work trashed in a misguided reboot from J. Michael Straczynski, only to be trashed AGAIN in the New 52 debacle).

Simone has a phenomenal sense of humor, a wild imagination, and a deep and compassionate grasp of character, so she's basically a perfect fit to inject some life into Wonder Woman (a character who goes through more ups and downs than a goddamn rollercoaster). These are some of the most entertaining comics I've read in a while... though there ARE some lingering cultural influences and ideas that feel very post-9/11 in the worst ways, like a scene where a desperate and lasso-less Diana resorts to torture to extract information from a supervillain.

Thankfully, those lingering bitter notes are few and far between, and the introduction of Genocide-- Wonder Woman's equivalent to Doomsday-- is otherwise a surprisingly nuanced and philosophically loaded story that calls into question the very principles Diana represents. It's a solid run, and I hope DC Finest collects the rest of it (so I'm not forced to douple-dip and buy the Gail Simone omnibus)!

Gail Simone might be the most overrated Wonder Woman author to ever come about.
I'll be fair in saying that in past things I've read from Simone, I haven't been much a fan. Her Birds of Prey is still in my to read list, as well as a majority of her stuff, but I didn't love Secret Six, or any of her Superman stuff. Its just not for me and I'm willing to concede that.
However, Wonder Woman is one of her most praised works to come about in her career in comics, but I couldn't see that as further than the truth from this storyline. There are a lot of great ideas here, and a lot of expansions of the lore here. New secrets about Themyscira are revealed to the audience, a blossoming relationship, and a new villain. Its a pretty fun throwing things at the wall to see what sticks.
Not only that, this is like the DC that I herald being at its best. The late 90s-late 00s of DC comics were stellar in terms of art, writing, and even events. I have some bias here of growing up with these iterations of the characters, but you have to see what was going on at the time; Superman was finally going back to his Silver Age origins after almost 30 years of the horrible John Byrne revision, Supergirl had some great comics at the time, Batman had some of his most iconic stories and runs during this time, Grant Morrison and Frank Quitely created All Star Superman, 52 came out, Greg Rucka did the best Wonder Woman run at that point, and Wally West was the Flash.
Not saying there weren't fumbles at this time. Things like Countdown, All-Star Batman, Identity Crisis, and many retcons made this era a mixed bag (like every era of any entertainment to be fair). But the 2000s comic book renditions of these characters and stories are like a sense of home for me. The art, the writing, the characters all feel like someone I'd grown up with, and DC has had to do a lot of work to get back to that point for me and so so so many other readers.
Bit of a side tangent, but I want to mention it as context to say that this should hit for me. And on some level it does. The art's fantastic. I love Terry Dodson, and the bold outlines of each character have really fluid silhouettes and are beautiful to look at. Other artists on the books were great at capturing that same essence, and Brad Anderson's coloring acts as a unifier for the book by creating consistency. I also love Wonder Woman's costume here. I think I'm more of a fan of a ton of stars on the undies instead of just like 2 or 3. It just feels very comic booky in the best way possible.
Simone somehow is able to take this book down a lot with her writing. The characters are mostly bland, with very little standouts. Diana's working with the government as a secret spy with Etta Candy and some new members of the cast. Nothing wrong with these ideas. Wonder Woman's a character who could use a stronger cast behind her like Superman has with the Daily Planet/Superman Family and Batman has with GCPD/ Bat Family. Wonder Woman has her own family of characters, but they're barely in this book and when they're here its pretty inconsequential.
What didn't work for me was the characterization. Every character is very standard and lacks a lot of good representation. Especially Diana.
It's really hard to call Diana a character here. She is legit what people think Superman is like in the comics of being boring, always right, and so stoic that there's nothing she personally needs to resolve. Which I just don't agree with for this character or most characters. Give her more to do in your book and give her more emotions and flaws.

The Circle: 4
I found the Amazon stuff interesting but the Nazi soldiers were very unnecessary.

Expatriate: 3.5
Seeing space is always fun but I just didn’t like the resolution they gave to the lantern. Him wanting to kill the leader was justified.

Ends of the Earth: 3.5
I liked the medieval esque setting but the ending was a tad confusing for me. Although, the guy who had made a deal with the devil was an interesting character and I really liked the scene of Diana having to take back her soul and at the end no blaming him for betraying them.

A Star in the Heavens: 3
The movie setting was fun but Queen of Fables is just not that interesting. The highlight of the arc was the final scene of Diana visiting the mother.

Rise of the Olympian: 3
I was very excited for this arc since Gail did a very good job at the setting the tone and making Genocide feel like a very big deal. Unfortunately, in the end, the story had way too many moving parts and was too ambitious. You have Zeus creating his own kind of warrior, and then you’ve got Cheetah creating Genocide from Diana’s body but then you have Ares being the actual big bad, and then you’ve got Genocide dismantling Diana’s life. It was all too much, is the story about what an Amazon represents, is it about Diana’s values or is it about Diana’s place as a symbol representing a country regardless of whether she likes it or not. If the story had just picked one angle, the whole would’ve been so much better. I also didn’t like that Zeus’ “Amazons” were appointed to Themyscira since I thought their whole point was to parallel the Amazons and show why Diana’s way of compassion is the correct one but then at the end you have the one that’s appointed king not actually be in Zeus’ side that much. So which is ? I also think that the Diana not being connected to her gods or Themyscira is very played out and I also didn’t believe that Diana wouldn’t actually kill Genocide since in her own words she kills if she has no choice, and Genocide doesn’t even really have a conscience.

Birds of Paradise: 3
Seeing Diana was cool I guess and liked seeing Diana having a life but the rest was just alright. I don’t understand why Diana was so cool with seeing Sgt. Steel after he went so hard on wanting to prove that she was an Amazon.

Some overall thoughts: I don’t understand why they forced the love interest so hard and I absolutely hate that Hippolyta made him an “honorary Amazon” it was just just very cringy and I hated the scene where Diana is injured after fighting Genocide and Cassie and Donna are taking her to Themyscira and he says that he’s an honorary Amazon and that he should be able to go. Please let us not see him again now that they’re broken up.

I'm going to preface this by saying I am not the biggest Wonder Woman fan, nor am I the biggest Gail Simone fan.

Did I love this? Absolutely not. Did I hate it? Not at all. Did I like it? Yes, a good bit.

So this is Wonder Woman near the end of the "old" DC universe before the Flashpoint reboot happened. I usually associate Wonder Woman with Steve Trevor, romantically, so it was a big loop for me to see her hooked up with Tom Tresser, Nemesis. I wish I could say this grew on me, but it never did. I've liked Nemesis before in the past, but this version was just ugh.

But what about these stories? They were all over the map for me. Some I really liked, some I didn't. I had the biggest problem with the Rise of the Olympian story which is eight issues long. There is just too much thrown in here that you can't enjoy any part of it. But some of the early stories I enjoyed, and the last story I over all enjoyed.

So am I glad I read it? Sure. Wonder Woman is a character I have not read nearly enough.

Did I love it? No, I wish I did.

i was actually so concerned with why the Simone run was listed as one of the best, but once the "Rise of the Olympians" plot started, i started to see the light.

i wasn't a fan of the romance plot with Tom but now that i know she was kinda using him (oof Diana), it got a lot better. im glad it wasn't all in my head either. they really have no chemistry. i feel bad that he was led on though. im looking forward to seeing where their friendship stands going forward. speaking of friends, poor Etta. i hope shes going to be okay and i feel bad for Steve. is he even on speaking terms with Diana? hes been pretty absent in this run so far. im looking forward to where their friendship will go too.

I know this is just the first half of Simone's run (i plan to start the next half immediately), but im really looking forward to the next half. i hope it's just as good if not better.

For anyone who's never read Gail Simone's Wonder Woman run (which I hadn't), I strongly recommend this DC Finest collection titled "Gods and Omens".

Some wonderfully written Wonder Woman stories, with fantastic artwork by Terry Dodson and Aaron Lopresti that capture the character and her dicothomical relation to her pantheon of Gods perfectly.

Aside from collecting about half of Simone's run, it also includes a fun story pairing Wonder Woman with Power Girl written by Mark Waid, and artwork by the masterful George Perez, and a forgettable team-up with Grace from the Outsiders (which, oddly, stars off the collection- weird choice there).

I enjoyed this a lot more than I thought I would, it was a very solid run with some really good writing. The big standout for me was the long storyline revolving around the gods and genocide. While the other stuff was good, this story elevated this book and had me hooked.

I'm currently enjoying Simone's X-Men run so I decided to try this out and yeah, not for me at all. Glad other people like it though!

Gail Simone's very underrated run gets a collection! Interesting take on WW's mythology, with a neat fantasy arc and TALKING GORILLAS.

And a romance with Nemesis. UGH.

The start of one of the better Wonder Woman runs. With great art and supporting cast the overall narrative is really good. Covers 2007-2009.

I went into reading this with high expectations given the acclaim of the Gail Simone Wonder woman run, but I found it to be over rated. It is entertaining for the most part, the art througout is fantastic, but what lets it down is the clunky writing layout for large portions of the runs in this.

I don't think Simone is necessarily to blame for this, I have no idea how much of a creative collaboration it was in terms of plot, but the first person narration is just too much. First person narration can work great in a lot of comics, but in this run it's all over the place. In a lot of panels you have the first person Diana narration separated in 2 or 3 caption boxes with speech bubbles in between from various characters, when really it should all be boxed together so you read it seamlessly. The way it's done in this format is really confusing, and takes you away from the immersivity of the story.

Other glaring issues is the use of fonts, in the circle run especially, where the captions have a yellow back ground with small low cap writing in a different font, it's hard to read and again takes you out of it, which is a shame as the plots do seem interesting, but all this hinders a good reading experience. Other issues is you are not always sure who is the first person narrator, mostly it's Diana, sometimes the style is used for other characters which is really confusing as you read thinking it's one character only to find it's someone else. And some of the dialogue can feel un natural and stilted at times.

But all that said, there are still some fun moments to be found, the 2nd half of the book feels like a improvement, or maybe I just became accustomed to the writing? The art is just stunning, so that does help the enjoyment of it. The plots are very good, with a lot of surprises in store. The support cast were also pretty, good. Wonder woman felt very much in character for the most part, but not all as (I won't spoil here) it's revealed she has some very un wonder woman like motivations for things, in particular with her supposed love interest of the run. I felt that was really out of character, but nonetheless it showed that she isn't perfect and is also flawed, but it didn't sit well with me, and the ending of the book left it in a unsurprising way.

So highlights for me was the rise of the olympian saga. Not perfect, but overall really well done in building up the tension etc. The final 2 parter (Wonderwoman cage fight team up,) ended it on a high.

So yeah, by no means a great run as it's claimed to be, various problems like I mentioned, but it just about scrapes a 3 star, mainly for the great art, and the various fun moments in the book. Recommended only for wonderwoman fans mainly.

Not too shabby. My memories of this run were probably better than the actual run. Wonder Woman has a secret identity now, Diana Prince, that she barely bothers to conceal while she works at the Department of Metahuman Affairs as a field agent. For some reason, this doesn't collect Gail Simone's entire run. There's another 10 issues or so after this ends. It seems like an odd choice when DC also threw some filler stories in at the beginning by Marc Andreyko and Mark Waid. There is some neat stuff in there to reveal some secrets from the Amazons' past. Zeus though is a straight up dick once he comes on scene. Overall not my favorite Wonder Woman run but a solid one.
