*4.5 stars*

Dr Olivia Winter has a dark past and a dark present - she is a forensic psychologist who studies serial killers, and what makes them tick. She should have more insight than most, as she’s actually the daughter of a serial killer - in fact, her father tried to kill her when she was just 9 years old, and that was after he’d just killed her mother and sister, and confessed to killing other women too.

Olivia has never seen her father since his incarceration, and to this day, she still has no idea why he did what he did. He still sends her birthday and Christmas cards, which she throws away, but what on earth goes through his mind, what made him become the monster that he is?

Now, another serial killer is terrorising the women of London and Olivia is asked if she’ll help the police by profiling the killer. She agrees, but it will mean facing her own demons which haunt her every day, and have done since she was 9 years old.

Gosh, this is a real page turner. Michael Wood’s remarkable new psychological thriller gives a fascinating yet disturbing insight into the relationship between a serial killer and his victims. It’s deeply engaging and thought provoking, and the tension at times becomes unbearable due to the quality of the writing, making you turn the pages as if hypnotized by the narrative.

This is a chilling read, but if you're brave enough to venture hand-in-hand with the author, onto the London streets frequented by a serial killer, you'll certainly be well rewarded, for ‘The Mind of a Murderer’ is exceptional and hugely recommended.

I was over the moon when I saw that Michael Wood has a new series coming out. I love, love, love his Matilda Darke series and had high hopes for this book. I was not disappointed; in fact, I was extremely impressed with this book. Michael Wood hit it out of the ball park with The Mind of a Murderer, the first book in the new Dr Olivia Winter series!!! Woohoo!!!!! This book is excellent! It's gripping, shocking, dark, tension filled and had me on the edge of my seat the entire time!

Dr Olivia Winter is a forensic psychologist whose father was a serial killer. Now her job is to get into the minds of killers. She survived after being stabbed multiple times by father who succeeded in killing her mother and sister. She bears the emotional and physical scars of that attack. She is an intelligent, tenacious, strong yet flawed character. I appreciated how Michael Wood showed how being almost killed by her father not only affected her physically and mentally but also how it shaped her relationships with others and her chosen profession. I thought this was very nicely done.

There is a new serial killer in London. The police need help catching him and call on Dr. Olivia Winter for help. She reluctantly agrees and works closely with DI Foley to catch this vicious killer. While working to identify the killer, Olivia will have to confront parts of her past that have haunted her most of her life.

Wowza! This book was so good. Michael Wood wasted no time in setting the stage with this gripping and shocking book! I loved how there wasn't any down time. The pacing was spot on with no down time. I kept trying to find time to read to get back to this book that knocked my socks off. I was fully invested in the plot. I loved that this book didn't take any time to build. It's on from the first chapter! I enjoyed the characters. I rooted for Olivia and DI Foley. Her father was sinister, crafty, and smart. He was a character that readers will love to hate.

I loved the tension that flowed throughout this book. There is a mounting sense of danger that is palpable and increases as the book goes on. What a treat this book was to read. It was this reader's dream read! I can't wait to read the next book in the series!!!!! After reading the Matilda Darke series, I know he is an expert in character development, creating relationships between the characters and his plots are out of this world!

Highly recommend!!

3.5⭐
Genre ~ serial killer thriller
Series ~ Dr. Olivia Winter #1
Setting ~ London
Publication date ~ March 28, 2024
Page Count ~ 454 (p+ 54 chapters +e)
Audio length ~ 14 hours 27 minutes
Narrator ~ Olivia Mace
POV ~ multiple 3rd
Featuring ~ brutal murders, some steamage

Olivia is the daughter of infamous serial killer Richard Button. Known as the The Riverside Killer who killed 8 women, including his own wife and daughter, before he was caught. Now, 25 years later, she is a forensic psychologist helping the police try to catch the newest serial killer in London.

Overall, I do enjoy serial killer books and this one hit all the marks in what I expected from it, but it just felt so long. It was repetitive, too. I was reading 2 books at the same time ~ 68% into this one and there’s still over 3 hours left, 68% into the other and there’s 1 hour and a half left, so what does that tell you? Long chapters, long paragraphs and lotsa info. I’ll probably read the next in the series to see what’s next for Olivia and if DI Foley will be in it because I did like him.

Btw ~ the sausage dog was kicked, but he’s okay. Olivia even took him to the vet to make sure.

Here are the quick notes that I posted on pub day.
~ took me ages to get through
~ felt suuuuper long
~ excess information ~ one example ~ Foley only has a solid oak wardrobe, a king sized bed and a single bedside table in his bedroom. Please tell me why I should care? We’re trying to catch a murderer here.
~ speaking of ~ killer was so obvious to me, so maybe I should look into a new career in law enforcement.

Narration notes:
I did not listen to this one, but am just giving the info above for reference.

Dr Olivia Winter #1

Dollis Hill, London, Thursday 15/2/24
Phoebe Harper arrives home from a double shift to find her next door neighbour’s 40th birthday party in full swing with her evening interrupted several times by revellers. However, only one has evil on their mind and it seems they’ve killed before - a serial killer is stalking the streets. The Metropolitan Police hope that forensic psychologist Dr Olivia Winter’s insights will help them catch the perpetrator before more victims pay the ultimate price. Olivia is reluctant, resisting for personal reasons that continue to torment her, it seems she has her own very specific demon to confront. After a great deal of thought she takes a look at the files and prepares to give her thoughts to DI Amyas Foley.

Wowza, if not a treble wowza! I admit to some concern that this wouldn’t be as good as the brilliant Matilda Drake series but Michael Wood has blown that thought right out of the water. In fact, he’s knocked number one in this compelling new series right out of the park and then some. Powerful? Phew, I need a breather after completing this as it’s so intense. Fast paced? You need to strap yourself in for this one. Twisty? Well, I’d say you’ll feel like you’ve ridden the Kingda Ka rollercoaster and probably be just as dizzy and reeling. Tightly plotted? Of course, it’s complex and has more inside layers than a matryoshka doll as more facts reveal themselves. Red herrings? More blind alleys and snickleways than York but I don’t fall for one, Mr Wood! Chilling? The dial on the chill factor is turned up to maximum with added spine tingling creep and moments of breathtaking fear. A shocker of a finale and a cracking good ending? Oh come on, this is MW we’re talking about here so that’s a given. He’s the master of the cracking end, often on a cliffhanger. Tension and suspense? Yes indeed, you’ll be uttering yikes or much worse.

So, what of the new characters his fertile imagination has created? My heart positively aches for Olivia once you read and comprehend her backstory which is a belter in terms of a fiction plot, less so if it’s your actual story. Her past has seriously impacted on her in several ways and I’m full of admiration for what she has made of her life as a forensic psychologist. The insights into the mind of a serial killer blows my mind as you witness how this thrill killer has grown in confidence and wickedness. There are some scenes that are so tense I find myself holding my breath, it seems to freeze the blood. It’s horrifyingly fascinating and feels authentic and well researched. I really like the character of Amyas Foley too, he’s one of the good guys and I look forward to these two teaming up in future.

A big thank you to the author for introducing us to Stanley the dachshund who provides some heartwarming light relief and for an utterly immersive read from start to finish. To future readers, I’d advise a block of time as this is a glued to the pages, just one more chapter read even though your eyes feel as if lead weights on them! An easy five stars.

Having survived a brutal assault by the Riverside Killer at the age of nine, Dr. Olivia Winter went on to become a world renowned forensic psychologist who studies the minds of serial killers, and although she has a good understanding into the minds of serial killers, she has never studied the Riverside Killer who also happens to be her father. Now with a new serial killer stalking the streets of London, the police have come to Olivia for help profiling him before he strikes again. Until now, she has never worked on active cases for a reason, but she agrees this time due to the urgency of the situation.

This was so good! I’m so glad the synopsis didn’t give away too much of the story as many of them do. It has been a little while since a book has kept me up reading late into the night like this one did. The Mind of a Murderer is a dark psychological thriller that grabbed my attention from the start and kept me enthralled until the very end. Despite having it all together professionally, Olivia’s personal life was understandably a mess given her past. She proved to be an interesting character with her complex nature, and human flaws that added depth to her persona.

While I really enjoyed this book a lot, there were a few minor things that kept it from being a 5 star read for me, mainly a few of Olivia’s questionable actions/reactions and also two events that directed the narrative using circumstances that didn’t seem likely they would have happened like that in real life. I can’t go into more details without spoilers so I will leave it at that. Some of the crimes are gruesome in their description but it didn’t feel gratuitous or excessive, but went with the overall darkness of the story.

Michael Wood is a new-to-me author, but I am already looking forward to Dr. Olivia Winter #2, and while I wait for it, I’ll definitely be checking out his Matilda Darke series. 4.5 stars. 💫

My thanks to Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for the opportunity to read an ARC in exchange for my honest opinion. Pub date: 3/28/24.

This was my first Michael Wood read but it will not be my last. Just a great book and based on a pretty good concept too.

Olivia Winter is our hero. She survived an attempt on her life by a serial killer who just killed Olivia's mother and sister. Oh, I should mention this serial killer was her father Richard Button who admitted to the killings and sexual mutilation of 8 women. Olivia went on to live with her grandparents and changed her name. Her father still haunts her memories all these years later and sends her cards at various times of the year like her birthday and holidays.

Obsessed with what happened to her family she becomes a forensic psychologist hell bent on trying to figure out what makes serial killers kill so that perhaps we can learn from them and prevent it from happening. Now to me I think the author becomes a bit over zealous with regard to this. A large part of the book reflects on this theme over and over. The author does admit though that you really cannot trust much of anything a serial killer tells you and I wholeheartedly agree with that. That principle of trying to determine what makes a serial killer is very intriguing and interesting at an ideological level but is it at all realistic? The book plays on the aspect quite a bit and maybe even over does it to a degree.

Nevertheless this book was awesome. Olivia is best friends with Jessica a detective inspector whose coworker DI Amyas Foley is aware of the relationship between Olivia and Jessica and wants Jessica to use that relationship to bring Olivia in to consult on what is clearly a serial killer getting better and bolder at what he does. Jessica knows Olivia does not want to work on active cases but tries to persuade her. Things do not go good but when the serial killer strikes again for the seventh time and the victim is none other than Jessica it becomes a lot easier for Olivia to break from her long standing tradition of not getting involved in active cases.

So this book works on so many levels with police procedural being pretty good. The serial killer and his activity are just fascinating. The real life interaction between Winter and her ailing father is super cool too and man what a piece of work her father is. After stabbing her four times when she was nine he still wants to play mind games with her all these years later. The new serial killer is a fan of her father and meets him at the hospital. Richard Button asks him to kill his daughter as the eighth victim, like wow. Then there are the backdrop and issues around Olivia Winter herself and there is a lot there. There is an acquaintance who lives next door to Olivia who is a medical student and becomes obsessed with Olivia. Is he possibly the serial killer? Just so many twists and turns and so much going on here with great writing and an easy to follow well laid out premise. The relationships with Olivia and a few of the men in her life are fascinating too including the one being forged with the DI Amyas Foley.

This book is like a brewing thunderstorm with all kinds of clouds gathering. Just so much to watch and see unfold. To anticipate what is coming keeps you glued to reading more and more in one sitting. Just full of all kinds of information with regard to the subject of serial killers. So many twists and turns bringing it to a great climax.

This was the first in the series and is written in the calendar year of 2024 which is pretty cool. The author says the next one will be out in 2025 and frankly I hope it is out sooner somehow. I will not be waiting until 2025 to read Michael Wood again. He has many books out there including other series. Sadly it took too long to come across him but I will be making up for that. This was an easy five stars!!

PHENOMENAL!!! Thank you NetGalley and HarperCollins UK, One More Chapter for granting me access to this book in exchange for an honest review.

ADDICTIVE!! Buckle up for an exhilarating journey through an intense, profoundly compelling crime thriller that promises to grip your senses and keep you breathlessly guessing until the very last moment, leaving your heart pounding with excitement!! The Mind of a Murderer is the first book in the "Dr. Olivia Winter" series, is unequivocally a MASTERPIECE!! With its lightning-fast pacing, riveting suspense, adrenaline-fueled action, palpable tension, jaw-dropping twists, multi-dimensional layers, skillfully placed red herrings, spine-tingling and unsettling moments, and a genuinely shocking conclusion all contribute to an unforgettable experience that will stay with you long after you've turned the final page!! Another thriller to add to my favorites for 2024!!! 🖤🖤🖤🖤🖤

Dr. Olivia Winter, a forensic psychologist, specializing in understanding the minds of serial killers, faces an unprecedented challenge: understanding the one monster she cannot fathom-her own father. Infamous for his brutality, he unleashed a reign of terror until his capture, with Olivia narrowly escaping as his intended final victim. Now, with a new serial killer terrorizing London, Olivia's expertise is urgently sought by the police to profile the perpetrator before more lives are claimed. But to confront this new threat, Olivia must first confront her own deepest fears, navigating a perilous journey through the shadows of her past.

In summary, it's a deeply twisted and psychological unsettling crime thriller that captivated me from beginning to end! This is my first read by this author, and I am already a devoted fan, eagerly anticipating delving into more of his literary works! I cannot recommend this book enough and it deserves all the stars !!!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I was offered a netgalley widget but declined to read it as an ARC. Michael is one of my favorite male authors and love his other series. I was afraid this book would be the one that I did not like. The plot was good, the execution done well but it could have been condensed to fewer pages and some chapters felt a bit over exaggerated and long. But I can't wait for book 2 and see were this one takes us next.

Here we have a very fast paced page turner, a bit reminiscent of the story of Silence of the Lambs, as it is a young woman send out to get information from a apprehended serial killer in order to catch the current bad guy. Extra complication is the the killer is her own father ! So of course there is a frenzied chase through London in order to catch the killer before he kills again. Fast paced, very well written... so why did I only gave three stars, I hear you say?

Well, a bit of a letdown for me was the discrepancy between what Olivia Wilde was supposed to be and how she thought and behaved. She is the world wide, top notch expert on serial killers, a keynote speaker at universities and a very private person who should behave professionally in all circumstances, right?
Well... she doesn't. Her inner monologues are very immature and whiny, and she makes irrational decisions that don't fit the circumstances. An example is how she is presented as very aware of her own security with a state of the art home security system, but then she lets her keys and fobs in plain sight where a strangers can just grab them. When she gives advice to the police or tries to profile a perpetrator, she uses commonplace descriptions that we all know since reading Thomas Harris back in the days. She doesn't want any relationship with her dad, yet she goes to visit him and lets him get under her skin.

So I'm very conflicted about this book, because it is well written and a good whodunnit, but the main character just didn't live up to expectations.

My sincere thanks to NetGalley, HarperCollins UK & One More Chapter and the author for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.

My Rating: 1⭐️ lonely star, I had issues with this one!!

Dr Olivia Winter forensic psychologist is the serial killer whisperer. It is her job to get into the minds of killers and find out what makes them tick. Olivia has a monster in her closet though, one she can’t and doesn’t want to understand… her serial killer father who butchered her mother and sister and almost killed her when she was only 9 years old.

In the present day there is a new killer in town who is racking up a body count and is eerily similar to Olivia’s father… the police need her help. Dr Winter who usually doesn’t like the limelight and won’t work active cases is dragged into the fray. Will she be able to catch a killer before she becomes the hunted…

Ok… it sounded good. It’s got good reviews so far, the author has another really popular series that I haven’t read yet so I figured lets do it. Unfortunately for me this one fell way short and at this stage I don’t think I could say I would go back for book 2 in this new series I am not curious enough to go through the motions.

The premise was intriguing and I think if done differently it would have been great. I don’t know if its that I didn’t enjoy the authors writing style (I didn’t) or if the story just wasn’t for me… but I had some big issues and icks with this book.

In terms of what I did like… it was very meh for me… so there wasn’t too much standing out… as mentioned above I liked the premise, the idea of what it had to offer I just didn’t like the execution (hahaha pun intended). I thought the story was too repetitive, we listen to Olivia’s whiny monologue about how she doesn’t work active cases (those words are used repeatedly throughout), all the while she continues to work said active case and it felt like a competition for her to be on point with her predictions or profile. But as she was profiling the killer she kept reminding us she wasn’t a profile… so which is is Olivia are you in or out …

Now I won’t go into massive spoilers but some of the things I am going to mention might be minor ones so skip ahead or close down now if you actually want to read this book…

Start Minor Spoilers
Olivia’s best friend (her only real friend) is killed by this new killer… she finds out had a tiny cry then after complaining about how she doesn’t work active cases she immediately goes to the scene of the crime but sheds no more tears for her very best friend in the world… and seemingly makes eyes at the guy her very best friend in the world was last imitate with… really!!! Come on… time and a place guys.

Speaking of making eyes at guys.. now I have nothing against Dr Winter getting down and dirty with whomever she pleases but in the middle of the chase for a killer? When her life is on the line… is that really the time and place… the sex scenes ALSO WHY ARE THERE SEX SCENES IN A THRILLER … JUST NO!!! But the sex scenes were pretty gross to be honest… I am not ashamed to say I am a bit of a prude… but honestly we don’t need to have the ins and outs (heheh did it again) of her rough and wild sex life laid out right when someone is trying to kill off everyone its just not the time.

ALSO while I’m here why TF is every man immediately in love with Olivia…shes so beautiful, shes so smart and cute and everything every man ever wanted… throughout this book I think at least 3 dudes want to bang her all over town. Come on… this isn’t an erotic novel it’s meant to be a thriller. It was cringe and I really didn’t like it. I got to this point in my review and changed from 2 to 1… I have to be honest.
End Minor Spoilers

I can’t think of any redeeming parts that make me go but… I really liked this. Olivia is whiny and annoying and we get plenty of her inner self telling us how broken and sad and lonely and whatever she is. How many times do we have to find out she knows Krav Maga (cringe), how many times do we have to hear she hates London traffic so she rides a cool scooter everywhere (puke who cares), how many meals and outfits do we need described to us… I am gonna go with not many but we get them all.

I am cutting myself off… this will be popular… I am glad it will be cause I am going to be a major outlier. I can see why many many many others will love this and thats great but for me its a massive NO.

Overall, I recommend it if you love this author I suspect its similar to his other novels. I recommend it if you are new to thrillers, and also if you love a don’t think about the inconsistencies and just go with it style… unfortunately its not for me.

Thank you to Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter, NetGalley and the author for an advanced e-copy in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

How on earth have I not read anything by Michael Wood Before?? This is one of the best books that so have read so far in 2024 and I am kicking myself for not having read his books before. I feel I need to get to know Matilda Drake now.

The Mind of a Murderer was my kind of book. It had me a serial killer to be honest, but there is so much more to it than that. Olivia Winter is a forensic psychologist in London. Her job is getting into the minds of serial killers to see what makes them tick, why they do what they do. She is a survivor, when she was nine, her own father killed her mother and sister but she managed to get away. So she needs to know why he would do that.

Doesn’t that hook you in? now Olivia is working on her first live case with police. There is a serial killer on the loose in the Capital and she is trying to help stop him, putting her own mental and physical health at risk.

I just could not get enough of this book. If life had not gotten in the way I might have read it in one sitting. Something about the mindset of killers is fascinating and the way Olivia worked and lived was just so insightful. I also loved that they were dogs in her life, and that she was a bit messed up. You would be after having a childhood like that. I cannot wait to read more about her.

Thank you so much to Harper Collins UK, One More Chapter and NetGalley for my advanced copy of this fabulous book to read. Published on March 28th, it is a must must read.

I am a big fan of the authors Mathilda Darke series, so was a little hesitant to start a new series as can sometimes be a disappointment. But I didn’t have any worry with this one.

Another great character with one hell of a history, lots of scope for development.

I did find that the murderer almost telegraphed his guilt as they appeared, or maybe I have read too much!

There were a few other possibilities, but it was interesting to to read on and see if I was right.
Hopefully there will be more Olivia Winter books, alongside more Mathilda Darke books.

4 stars mainly as the murderer was so easy to identify.

Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher.

Happy Publication Day!!!

My first read by this author (but I have been close to starting his Matilda Darke series). I enjoyed this book alot and look forward to his next one featuring Olivia Winter. Excellent writing, solid characters, and intriguing relationships. The plot/perp hunt was very good as it was his story but this reader was anticipating it to go another way that really would've been a WOW for me.

Love a good epilogue to bridge the next book!

Thank you to both Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity in exchange for an honest review of The Mind of a Murderer by Michael Wood.

Another winner and another new author I will be keeping an eye out for!

Dr Olivia Winter is a forensic psychologist with a speciality in studying serial killers and what makes their evil minds work. Her point of difference in this field is that she is the daughter of a prolific serial killer who now incarcerated.

As another serial killer is terrorising the streets of London, Olivia is asked to join forces in helping with the investigation to catch this monster. Doing so will mean facing some of her own demons and fears that have followed her since she was 9 years-old …

Wowsers, this was disturbing but an equally propulsive read. High tension writing paced with an exceptional and clever storyline makes this a book I’ll be thinking of for a long time and putting on highly recommended list!

Huge thanks to HarperCollins UK and One More Chapter for an e-arc 💌

Dr. Olivia Winter has dark past. Her father is a serial killer. She knows what makes a killer. Or does she?
Michael Wood is a great writer. His writing is precise, sharp, engaging, his characters well fleshed out, and the story, well, what a gem that story is. Twisted, intense, gripping, an odd red herring thrown into the mix just to make things even more interesting, devilish. Oh yes, it's good, so so good.
I'm hooked and looking forward to reading the next book in the series.

Move over Matilda Darke. There’s a new kid on the block in the shape of Dr. Olivia Winter, a forensic psychologist. I’m a huge fan of the Maltilda Darke series, which I thought was pretty dark! But Michael Wood takes the reader to a whole new level of darkness. I absolutely loved A Mind of a Murderer with its gripping plot and intriguing protagonist; it’s every crime thriller junkie's dream read!

One thing that I love in a crime thriller is getting a glimpse into the darkest corners of the human psyche, and in A Mind of Murderer, you get a front-row seat! Olivia Winter is a survivor of a serial killer; it’s one of the main reasons she’s spent her life delving into the minds of the most depraved killers, hoping to get a better understanding of the motivation behind their actions. Normally, when you start a new series, it can take a while to get a feel for the main character, but Michael Wood has done it again and created a protagonist who you immediately feel a connection to. She’s flawed and fascinating, and her vast knowledge of serial killers is the icing on the proverbial cake! The relationship between Olivia and DI Foley gets off to a promising start, and I’m eager to see how their relationship grows.

The plot shows a serial killer stalking the streets of London. As the body count rises, the police need Olivia’s help to profile him before he can strike again. But to do so, she will need to confront her own demons. There are elements of Olivia’s past that run alongside the current investigation, which adds to the tension tenfold. The author does have a very dark imagination when it comes to crime scenes, so there are some graphic scenes in this book, but they are absolutely essential to the story. Otherwise, it wouldn’t have the impact it does. Although I was desperate to know 'Whodunnit' this book makes you more interested in the 'why'.

Wood’s has created a serial killer who will send shivers down your spine. I found their methods unnerving, so much so that my blood pressure must have gone through the roof! There is someone more depraved than the killer, a master of manipulation, a sick, twisted individual. You will loathe them from your first introduction, but my god, what a fascinating character! A Mind of a Murderer explores the depths of the human psyche in a way that moves you through the book with ease, anticipation, and a big dollop of dread! With a fast-paced plot that never wavers from a dark path, this book is a must-read for all crime fans. Mark my word, Michael Wood is one of the best writers in this genre. If you haven’t read any of his books yet, you're missing a real treat. I highly recommend it.

Forensic psychologist Olivia Winter agrees to help a police detective friend identify a serial killer. I fell for the misdirection and kept second guessing every theory. I have to give credit to the author for keeping me on my toes like that. I enjoyed trying to figure out who the killer was.

I was disappointed with the two-dimensional way in which the author wrote Olivia. She was supposed to be an educated, independent, capable, sorta paranoid woman, but Olivia’s entire personality was her job and her past (and those are closely related, too). Tragically, her only non-murder dialogue is a vapid exchange with a friend about recent dates and some salacious whispering during multiple, unbelievable sexual encounters with a complete stranger. (Nobody is banging in the locker room at the swimming pool, and someone as concerned as Olivia about personal security is not going to summon a stranger to her house for a booty call.)

The worst part, however, is when she says she feels “sad” for her would-be rapist because he’s “just lonely and confused” and wants to help keep him out of prison. Hard pass on that.

This is going to be a series, so I hope they get an actual woman to read the next one before it gets published. The author could benefit from a little more understanding of real, live women.

I absolutely love books by Michael Wood and this was no exception. This author really has a way of telling a story that is totally captivating. Doctor Olivia Winter has built a career dealing with investigating the minds of serial killers to see what makes them carry out the actions they do and mainly why they do it, this is a subject very close to Olivia's heart as her whole life has been transported into this world due to the family she is related to. Another serial killer is now on the loose and Olivia is requested by the police to help delve into this and try to stop future deaths from occurring. This is the beginning of another powerful story from this author.

I did wonder how this new character would be presented to us after such a strong previous character in Matilda Darke but I am happy to say Michael Wood has really provided the reader with another strong female lead and I am eager to see where he takes her in future books, I am very keen to see how she is developed moving forward. A strong plot that moves at a fast pace with lots of tension and suspence that keep you engaged and wanting more. I really cannot recommend these books highly enough.

Thank you to Netgalley, the author and publisher for an advanced copy, all opinions are my own.

First of all, I hate sex scenes. Not my thing. Thrill me with the mystery, thank you very much. There are 2-3 not-tame sex scenes in here, and I won’t be reading anymore of this author’s work. Have your characters make out and close the bedroom door behind them.

Now, to the actual story. It’s well-written, but there was something about the characters that made me not fully invested in them. I can’t really pinpoint why, but it kept me from rating this higher.

Trigger warnings: Extremely disturbing homicidal scenes, as well as multiple depraved insights into the mind of a serial killer. This is sick and twisted. There’s also an attempted rape (ugh, that whole scene made me so upset…why would this person have done that??!)

I love thrillers, but this one was a little too graphic for me.

I’m shelving this under “one and done”. I need a shower…but first let me double-check my locks.

I received an eARC from NetGalley, Harper Collins UK and One More Chapter. All opinions are my own.

This book requires the reader to take everything they think they know about how the police operate (even in the UK where this book takes place) and just.... throw it out the window. Seriously. This one is just so over the top in places that it defies belief.

First we have Oliva. Her character should have been absolutely fascinating. A forensic psychiatrist who not only interviews/studies serial killers for a living, but is also the daughter (and almost victim of), one of the most notorious serial killers in London's history. She definitely has her flaws and issues (rough, casual sex just to feel something is one of those flaws, a whiny, inner monologue that we are subjected to repeatedly is another), but that wasn't my issue with her. No, my issue with her was more than that.

To begin with, Olivia consistently says two things about herself. She does NOT get involved in active investigations, and she is not a profiler. And yet, she does both repeatedly. When she is first approached by Jessica (who we later find out was her best friend when she was a child as well), she adamantly shuts her down. But of course, the files Jessica left behind "call" to Olivia and she just can't help but look at them. And of course, she sees something none of the trained officers working the case have seen. So she reaches out to Jessica to tell her, and thinks nothing of it when she gets no response. Only to find out that Jessica was also a victim of the killer. And she was pregnant.

Enter DI Foley, Jessica's partner? Superior officer? I'm not really sure what he was to her other than the father of her child. He basically bullies Olivia into not only continuing to help with the investigation because he and his team "need her", and then browbeats her into accompanying him to the crime scene as well. He tells her he will take her back whenever she wants, but of course, once they get there he goes back on his word because as you will see time and again this man at his core (as he does have brief moments of humanity), is nothing but a callous tyrant who will do anything to get his way. He even goes so far as to continue to push someone in interview even after Olivia tells him he is not the killer. His reasoning? If he arrests this man (even knowing he is innocent) it will buy him some time to get the brass and the press off of his back while he continues to look for the real killer.

At this point, I am not only questioning why Olivia, who is not only technically a civilian, but also a close friend to the victim allowed to continue to work her case, AND taken to an active crime scene (as they toured the scene while it was still being processed), but moreover, why was Foley and his team continued to be allowed to work the death of their friend and colleague? Am I the only person who read this and saw the glaring conflict of interest here? Olivia even asks Foley at one point if he should be working the case given how close he was to the victim, to which he retorts he is the best person to be working it. Again, where were HIS superiors to put a stop to this?

But of course, Olivia is now on board, and she even goes so far as to give the police several potential profiles on their killer. Even though, remember, she tells us time and again that she is definitely NOT a profiler. Then what are you doing?

Another pet peeve I had about Olivia is despite knowing there is a serial killer on the loose (and she fits his profile), she continues to drink until she's "fuzzy" to the point she fumbles with one of the locks on her door before she gives up on locking it. Because surely having your wits scattered by alcohol is a great way to fend off a killer. And then we have Mister X (I'm going to call him that to avoid spoilers). He enters her home, accosts her, nearly takes advantage of her in the worst way possible (insert a potentially triggering R word here) and yet when all is said and done and she manages to get away from him she ...... ends up feeling SORRY for him. Somehow, she justifies what he almost did to her because he was "lonely" and even talks about going in front of a judge to speak on his behalf. She then actually gets sad and cries when he takes his own way out of the situation.

Seriously? You're almost violated, and you find a way to excuse his behavior?

The one good thing I can say about this one is while I had my suspicions on who might be behind the killings, I was wrong. The person who was responsible was someone who hadn't been on my radar, and even then Olivia manages to mess this up by going and accidentally tipping him off that she knew it was him instead of going straight to the police even though she says she should. The reason she didn't immediately call Foley? Because it reflected poorly on her (even though again she swears she's not a profiler and she doesn't work active cases), because she didn't immediately see that it was him therefore it meant her focus wasn't 100% on the job at hand.

I forced myself to finish the book after that, just to be disappointed with the ending too. I will not be continuing on with this series in the future.

DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.

Oh, I liked this book. I liked it a lot. It’s one of those books that just has a brilliant, blend of character, story and pacing which means that I just ate it up. And although I know the author has a legion of fans who demand more and more Matilda, I really thing that with Olivia Winter he has hit on another winner and I, for one, am loving it.

The Mind of a Murderer, introduces readers to Dr Olivia Winter, a Forensic Psychologist who specialises in getting into the minds of serial killers. But rather than chasing glory on the back of live cases, Olivia prefers life a step away from the limelight, researching and interviewing those already caught, looking for patterns in behaviour to help identify potential serial killers before they find their calling. At least until a childhood friend approaches her for help on an active case which turns Olivia’s whole world upside down. There is a killer on the loose in London, a sadistic individual who subjects their victims to vicious and prolonged attacks before going on to murder them. With no forensic evidence, understanding the killer’s psychology is the key to uncovering their identity and, unfortunately for Olivia, she is uniquely positioned to understand them.

Unfortunate for Olivia, fabulous for us as readers. Olivia has a difficult past, to say the least, one which informs the woman she has become. Somewhat of an introvert, she keeps her cards close to her chest, with a very small but trusted circle of friends. She is not a recluse, but she is as close to a loner as someone who interviews killers for a living can be. I actually liked her a lot, and Michael Wood has done a great job in establishing her history without allowing it to take over the narrative, making her sympathetic but also very determined and astute. She is troubled, and her past is set to continue to haunt her to an extent that I’m really excited to see play out over the course of the series. The characters that inhabit her world are varied and add texture and suspicion to her life. There is a lot of misdirection and perhaps even misinformation to a degree, so it is hard to know who, if anyone, to trust. With perhaps one notable exception, DI Foley, there were times when I was left questioning everyone that Olivia knew. There was only one person who really showed their true colours from the start, and even they pulled the odd trick or two along the way.

This is an intense read at times. As readers we are present as the killer meets their victim, can feel the panic and fear that grows as they begin to understand the trouble they are in. It is not necessarily gratuitous in they way it is portrayed on the page – it doesn’t need to be. Fear, and the torturous wait for the inevitable is what really drives the tension in this book and whilst it is violent, it is the psychological aspects of each attack that matter more. I like the way the author subverts expectations at times, throws what people think they might know on its head, and is not afraid to throw in the odd shock or surprise in order to really make us sit up and take note. There is a constant feeling or urgency and threat that feeds through the book, that sense that things are escalating and building towards some kind of ultimate showdown, that had me turning the pages at pace.

If you like a dark, edgy thriller, with brilliant characters and more than the odd shock or surprise, then this is a book you really ought to take a look at. Fans of the author will love it as it has all of his trademark tension and willingness to take the book in directions you really rather it wouldn’t go. I’m really looking forward to seeing what might come next. Knowing Mr Wood it could be absolutely anything, but I am totally here for it.

Amazing, compelling, gripping, twisty.... what a ride of a book that ticks every box!
This is my first read by Michael wood, WHY?! Why has no one pushed me towards this author before?

I always give a no spoiler review, so this will be hard to go into any depths. But I must say, as a reader, theres nothing more exciting then being in the know for more than the last 10% of the book. To know a twist, or have a sight into whats happening on the 'other side' of a police procedural is my newest favourite thing. Chuck in a serial killer (or two) and I'm all yours. What a perfect crime/thriller novel. Added straight onto my favourites list, and I will be imploring all my thriller loving friends to get on board this ride!!

*** Happy Pub Day ***

I think Michael Wood is the master of psychological thrillers. His DI Matilda Darke series is excellent, and this start of a new series promises to be just as good.

Olivia Winter is not a profiler; she is a world-famous forensic psychologist who studies serial killers. The twist is that her father is a convicted serial killer who killed her mother and sister and attempted to kill nine-year-old Olivia before he was captured. Now he is in a London hospital after heart surgery, and he wants to see Olivia--this is just when a new killer is stalking women using a similar killing method as her father. Is there a connection? When the killer strikes close to home, Olivia agrees to help the police investigation despite dredging up painful memories and putting her own life in danger.

I found Olivia to be an engaging character with a strong personality despite her emotional baggage. The story is dark and twisty, just the way I like them. I'm looking forward to this new series. 4.5/5 stars.

Thank you, NetGalley and One More Chapter, for an advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. The publication date is March 28, 2024.

The Mind of a Murderer is book #1 in a new series featuring forensic psychologist Dr Olivia Winter. This was my first book by this author. I'm a huge fan of murder mysteries and psychology so was drawn to this chilling thriller. The story is well crafted, keeps you hooked and has layers upon layers which the author expertly peels back as the story progresses leaving you wanting more. The story has been done before but not like this! Dr Olivia Winter has faced the worst trauma anyone could experience, but has managed to build somewhat of a life studying the worst killers known to man. She thinks her past is behind her when a horrifying event forces her to confront the one thing person she could never truly escape - her father. I'm eager to read the next book in this series and am looking forward to seeing what the author comes up with next.

This is the first in a new series, and it is an exciting one. Olivia Winter studies serial killers, driven by the desire to know why they kill. It isn't just out of curiosity or fascination, it is deeply personal. When she was 9 years old her father stabbed her multiple times. He was on the verge of being arrested for a string of serial murders and his final act, before facing justice, was to kill his wife and young daughters.
Now, Olivia is a world renowned expert on killers, though her past is a closely kept secret. Only very few close friends know. That includes DI Jessica Sheffield, her childhood friend. Jessica knows not to ask Olivia to work on an active case, but there have been three women murdered in London and Jessica knows it is the work of a new serial killer. Olivia says no, but when she looks at the files for the three victims she realizes these can't be the killer's first victims. Reluctantly, she decides to consult with the police on this killer.
I'm not going to go into story specifics, to avoid spoilers. It is an exciting read and I "almost" figured out who the killer was. Right logic wrong suspect 🤣.

Thank you to Netgalley and Harper Collins UK for the opportunity to enjoy this series starter e-ARC

Alright alright, I had SUUUUUCH high hopes for this and I legit, I am so mad about it. Where should I start?

Olivia? Everyone wants to bang her but she’s so fuuuucking insufferably annoying for being this genius psychologist. I’d rather have not heard her thoughts because I’d add her to my 🔪 list too. And then she feels sorry for Sam…. FUCKKKKKING EYE ROLL. Kill me now.

This is probably niche of me but I’d have preferred different narrators and this might have made the story more interesting… but probably not. Olivia is so fucking annoying.

Honestly, could probably rate this lower but what I envisioned my head for this to be and what it was. I feel like I hyped it up more than I should have. So my bad… 😂

I'm a huge fan of Michael Wood and this is an excellent start to a new series.
His Matilda Darke series is one of my absolute favourites (highly recommend them too) and I loved the new protagonist here, Dr Olivia Winter.
Wood has a wonderful talent of creating fascinating stories and dripping the drama through the whole novel to keep the reader gripped.
Loved it.
