"You can't play pretend forever."Throughout their childhoods, Zach, Poppy and Alice were inseparable. They played all sorts of games - including a few role-playing ones where they involved "the Queen" - a bone china doll belonging to Poppy's mother.
According to the vision, the little girl who wants all of her parts together in her grave and has decided that the ragtag group of middle schoolers will be the ones to do it.
“Did you know that bone china had real bones in it?” Poppy said, tapping a porcelain cheek. “Her clay was made from human bones. Little-girl bones. That hair threaded through the scalp is the little girl’s hair. And the body of the doll is filled with her leftover ashes.”
I am a longtime Holly Black fan but I've only recently dipped into her children's stories...and let me tell you, she weaves a delightfully creepy tale.
"I want to go on a quest. I’ve always wanted to go on a quest. And now that I have one, I’m not backing down from it. I’m not going home until it’s complete."
