This volume collects a couple of shorter arcs before starting with a longer arc that is going to culminate in a school trip. One of the shorter arcs is the higloght of volume 9. It has two chapters, and has Azusa dealing with jealous girls of a class where all the boys shower her with affection. It's harassment that's getting Azusa on the verge of quitting, but Onizuka tells her something wise, that teachers are just human and sometimes playing hooky when the class is uncooperative is just the thing you need to get the right perspective.

The beauty of this manga, is the honesty of Onizuka's character, which clashes with some of the pretentious perverts among his faculty colleagues and why they don't get along with the main character. They are the opposite of Onizuka who hides nothing, while one of them has a secret hobby of recording upskirt videos of girls in the train.

This is a classic manga that deserves a better English version than this flawed one with a plethora of issues not limited to gutter loss, and nigh-unreadable dialogue because of the size (or because I'm beginning to get old man eyes).

POPKULTUROWY KOCIOŁEK: Dziewiąta odsłona serii odrobinę zwalnia tempo, a autor pozwala sobie na mocniejsze rozwinięcie postaci drugoplanowych. Nie oznacza to oczywiście, że manga nagle staje się zbyt spokojna. Onizuka jest bowiem zawsze szalony i takie też są jego pomysły.

Tomik rozpoczyna się od komediowego wątku, w którym pewne uczennice próbują rzucić na bohatera klątwę, co prowadzi do serii zabawnych wydarzeń.

Następnie akcja przenosi się na poważniejsze tory, gdy Onizuka odkrywa, że jedna z nauczycielek, Azusa Fuyutsuki, jest ofiarą znęcania się ze strony uczennic. Dziewczyny, zazdrosne o jej urodę i popularność, robią wszystko, by uprzykrzyć jej życie. Onizuka, nie mogąc znieść takiej niesprawiedliwości, postanawia interweniować. Jego metody, jak zwykle, są niekonwencjonalne i kontrowersyjne, ale przynoszą zaskakujące rezultaty.

Równolegle rozwija się wątek Kunio Murai, jednego z uczniów Onizuki. Chłopak boryka się z problemami rodzinnymi, a jego matka zaczyna spotykać się z podejrzanym mężczyzną. Kunio, zaniepokojony sytuacją, szuka wsparcia u Onizuki, który, mimo swojego niekonwencjonalnego podejścia, okazuje się dobrym słuchaczem i doradcą.

W końcowej części tomu pojawia się nowy wątek, zapowiadający nadchodzący wyjazd na zieloną szkołę. Onizuka, jak zwykle, wpada w tarapaty, a jego uczniowie, pod wodzą przebiegłej Miyabi Aizawy, planują zemstę.

Tom 9 GTO porusza więc ważne problemy społeczne, takie jak znęcanie się w szkole i problemy rodzinne. Fujisawa nie boi się poruszać trudnych tematów, ale robi to w sposób lekki i przystępny, dzięki czemu manga jest zarówno zabawna, jak i pouczająca...

This volume starts with Azusa having a problem as a female teacher with the girls and how Inuzka helps her. The next chapters revolved around Morai and his mother and a possible love interest in the school. The volume ends with the chapter that opens the Trip arc.

Tome plus calme qui développe les personnages secondaires. Onizuka toujours loufoque et une très belle scène avec Fuyutsuki sur le quotidien des profs et leurs difficultés. On finit par Miyabi qui repasse à l'attaque. Fujiytoshi sera mis en avant à coup sûr. Quel mauvais tour est réservé à Onizuka ?

J'ai trouvé ce tome moins intéressant, mais il permet de s'attacher un peu plus aux autres personnages. Il est aussi agréable de se laisser porter par des scènes du quotidien. En d'autres mots : il réussit très bien à être un tome tampon entre deux changements d'intrigue. Je pense que nous sommes au début d'un nouvel arc : un personnage secondaire de développer, Miyabi en action, Onizuka qui va sûrement devoir se surpasser... hâte de lire la suite !

Read this series first back in adolescence, and as I go through the same books this present day I find how resonant some themes that the author touches upon remain. Surely at face value the series might come across as silly or over the top; but it is in fact deeply rooted in everyday themes, troubles, vulnerabilities, passions among other threads. A real depiction of human connection as a manga can get.
