Dr. Christine Myers, a forensic scientist with the CIA, has investigated some of the most heinous crimes ever committed, but nothing could prepare her for the slaughter aboard the Dragon, a defecting North Korean nuclear submarine. On board, Christine and a team of Navy SEALs find all the crew members dead, some with their bodies smashed and mutilated, others poisoned from chlorine gas inhalation. Was the gas leak an accident, or was it sabotage? As the SEALS submerge the sub and attempt a clandestine journey to land, Christine tries to piece together the forensic clues. But once the SEALs start dying one by one, the survivors must band together against an unseen enemy—before it’s too late.

A forensic scientist, who is also a CIA agent, is assigned to board a defecting North Korean submarine along with a team of navy SEALS. The Korean crew members are found to have all met violent deaths and the team assignment is to investigate the deaths and to covertly bring the sub back for intelligence purposes. Although I first thought the plot had some real potential as a spy/mystery novel, it disappointingly deteriorated into a relatively predictable science fiction novel; predictable because I could see where it was headed way too early and a disappointment because the characters were implausible and unlikeable. Christine, the scientist, is a smug, self centered, know-it-all and the SEALS are all portrayed as moronic and incapable of independent thought. None of them seemed like real people and therefore, you certainly don’t care about the outcome when they face danger or even imminent death. Some of the action sequences worked but I think it might have fared better as a short story.

An engaging thriller that hooked me from the first chapter. It reminds me a bit of Aliens, and considering there is a character named Vazquez, maybe he book is paying that excellent movie homage. Regardless, it would make a good movie.

I should also mention that I'm slightly biased for this book because it was written by a friend of mine from college. Great work, Gerry.

Written by one of my friend's friends, this really did grip me in the first chapter and kept up the thrills through the last page. It kept me guessing. An unexpected pleasure.
