Guardians Of The Targe #2

Highlander Avenged

Rate this book
Although the English king tried to wrest it away, the Highland Targe—ancient relic and protector of Scottish lands—still lies safely in the hands of clan MacAlpin. But for how long?

Jeanette MacAlpin trained her entire life to become the next Guardian of the Targe, but that duty has now fallen to her cousin Rowan—a duty Rowan can’t seem to master. Fearful for her clan’s future, Jeanette seeks the solace of a sacred wellspring, and there encounters tawny-skinned Highland warrior Malcolm MacKenzie.

Wounded in battle, Malcolm is desperate to regain the use of his sword arm and strikes a deal with Jeanette. In return for her skills as a healer, Malcolm will advise the MacAlpins in their resistance against the English. And when he can once again swing a blade, he’ll return to the ranks of the Scottish army to fulfill his duty as a soldier.

But as passion grows between the golden warrior and the fair-haired healer, duty collides with love. Will they follow their hearts, or will clan loyalties keep them forever apart?

Highlander Avenged is one of those books you won't be able to put down. One of my favorite reads of 2014, it was absolutely fabulous. This is the second in Guardians of The Targe series, Highlander Betrayed is the first book in the series. I recommend you read that first as you the reader will have a better understanding of the Targe the history, lore, power etc. Also the relationships between the young women of theses books surround Rowan MacGregor, Jeanette and Scotia MacAlpin - a cousin and two sisters. Of course the English King still wants the ancient relic and protector of Scottish lands. Plus he would like to execute Rowan's husband as well the spy who switched sides. You can read alone, but I personally feel you the reader will have a clearer view if you read Highlander Betrayed first also a fabulous read and my review is up for that book as well.

In Highlander Avenged this story is about Jeanette MacAlpin those of you who read Highlander Betrayed must of felt like me as she never got guardianship as it fell to her cousin Rowan. Jeanette tries to teach the ways and how to call the powers of the stone with no success. Rowan gets frustrated feeling only her husband Nicholas can help her. Of course Jeanette had been taught and prepared for guardianship of the Targe since birth and for Rowan it's only been like days plus she never wanted this duty either. Jeanette also frustrated as being taught these ways all her life she too is frustrated with her cousin and decides to take a walk to the well Spring. A place that always has given Jeanette a sense of calm.

In Highlander Avenged the hero in this book is Malcolm MacGregor an injured soldier that protects Jeanette from a nasty English soldier bent on kidnapping her or worse thinking she is a witch with the guardian powers. After saving her Jeanette being the healer she is, notice's his sword arm is injured and brings him to Dunlairig Castle to heal him. They make a deal heal his sword arm and he will help advice The MacAlpins against the English. After that he will return to King Robert and rejoin the Scottish Army They quickly have an instant attraction which turns to love yet is not meant to be as they both have obligations to their own clans very much like unrequited love, the planets not inline etc. Not that they don't love each other just that they are both honorable and have obligations to their own clans plus he is a soldier to King Robert and needs to return his men and King and finish his duty to him,

I love that I got some time with some of my Highlander Betrayed characters like Rowan, Nicholas, Scotia, Duncan and even comical Peigi who always makes me laugh. The elder naughty matchmaker! I fell in love with Malcolm MacGregor besides being a very sexy golden kilted highlander and his endearment of always calling Jeanette "Angel" was very attractive as well.

I loved this book very much as I have loved every book Laurin Wittig has written as I have been reading her for a long time since her debut, but I must say I think Highlander Avenged is my favorite so far and will be on my keeper shelf. It will keep you captivated and brings out many emotions as I laughed and I cried through this book to me that equals to an amazing over the top great book! My advice is to read on the weekend or when you have time as you won't want to put this book down so count on loosing some sleep. In my opinion that counts a books as a masterpiece as I surely felt Highlander Avenged was not knowing what was going to happens next, feeling the characters struggles, triumphs, grief, pain and love.

I definitely recommend Highlander Avenged as I can't wait now for book three in this series which I am sure will be Scotia's story. I totally loved it and know anyone who reads it and loves historic Scotland, hot hunky kilted highlanders and some true Scottish history too as I do will love it too!

Next book release will be The Winter Stone, One Legend, three Enchanting Novellas. If you remember little Fia MacLachlan from "The Devil of Kilmartin" by Laurin Wittig another wonderful read too. This will be available on April 21, 2014. I can't wait to read it. It is a group of three novellas also by the talented Tanya Anne Crosby and Glynnis Campbell. You can't go wrong with these three talented amazing authors!

When I finished Book 1 in Laurin Wittig's GUARDIAN OF THE TARGE series, the very first thing I did was look up the expected publication date of Book 2. It was absolute torture waiting for Jeanett MacAlpin's story, so it should be no surprise that the day it arrived in my inbox I dropped everything else I was reading and immediately threw myself into Wittig's 1300s Scottish Highlands.

In Book 1, The Highland Targe chose Rowan as the new Guardian, much to Jeannette MacAlpin's dismay. She had trained in the ways of the Guardian with her mother her entire life and everyone expected that it would one day pass to her, as the eldest daughter of the current Guardian. But the stone chose Rowan, leaving Jeannette with the task of trying to train Rowan in the old ways quickly enough to restore the clan's protections before the English returned to seek vengeance for their defeat at the hands of Rowan and her husband, a former English spy.

Frustrated that Rowan doesn't seem to want to learn the old ways, claiming that the Targe works a different way with her, Jeannette is resigned that maybe she will have to be satisfied with helping her clan as a simple healer instead. Her inner struggle sends her fleeing her home and wandering to an ancient healing pool to think.

There at the pool she found a stranger trying to tend to his wounds. Her heart reaches out to this once powerful warrior that now was struggling, a large festering wound on his upper arm rendering it useless. For some reason, she knows she can trust him and that he needs her help.

Malcolm MacKenzie isn't just any wandering sell-sword. He is the proud eldest son of a chief and had been fighting with Robert the Bruce when he was gravely injured and separated from his men. After wintering with a poor crofter that had found him barely alive on the battlefield and nursed him the best he could, Malcolm was trying to make his way back to King Robert. But his cursed wound was not healing. What good was a warrior that couldn't wield his claymore? What kind of a chief would he be if he couldn't lead his clan into battle?

When Jeanette appeared at the secluded pool, he was convinced she was an angel. As she works with him to heal his would and rebuild his strength, he becomes certain that she is an angel indeed, and is soon helpless in love with the beautiful lass. But as Jeanette begins to discover she may also possess the power of the Guardians, she knows her place is with her clan. She had her duty---he has his duty to his clan. Neither could ask the other to give up their destiny, even if it means they can never be together. Or is there a way?

This author does a fantastic job entertaining readers without insulting their intelligence. The historical details are spot-on, and her legends and lore are carefully woven into the stories so well that they are truly believable, their magic creating a rich web of fantasy that creates a lush backdrop for her love-to-end-all-loves romances. This story is truly beautiful.

But there are moments that made me laugh out loud as well. The dialogue is very witty and never stilted or forced. It is well written from the first page to the last. My only complaint is that it ended. Book 3, the final novel in the series, can't come soon enough!!!

I LIKED IT!!

I liked Highlander Avenged bk.2. It picks off right were bk.1 left off. Rowan MacGregor has been picked by The Highland Targe Stone to be the new Guardian in bk 1. King Edward of England is sending a big military force to fight and destroy the MacAlphin Clan who guards the Targe. Book 2 is Jeanette MacAlphin's story. It was believed that Jeanette being the direct descendant and daughter of the previous Guardian Elspet would become the new Guardian, after her mother death. It seems that this doesn't happen and her cousin Rowan was picked as Guardian. Jeanette is feeling a bit rejected. She has her healing skills but she doesn't feel needed by her Clan. She loves her cousin and does all she can to teach her the signs and blessing that Jeanette has been taught she was a young child. Rowan doesn't seem to be catching own or her gifts as a defender are so different. that what Jeanette has been taught doesn't seem to translate to Rowan. This makes Jeanette feel even more useless. She goes to the Well Spring wear her mother took her and taught her to pray the Blessings. While there she comes across Malcolm Mackenzie son of Chief MacKenzie and warrior for King Robert the Bruce. Malcolm has been severally injured during a battle with the English soldiers. Jeannette being the healer she is treats his injuries and take him back to Dunlairig Castle and the MacAlphin Clan. He explains that he is a warrior fighting for Scotland with Robert the Bruce and he agrees to teach the men fighting skills in exchange for Jeanette's healing him and for his keep. Of course Malcolm and Jeanette fall in love. This is not a sensuous romance. It more about the Fantasy. I liked that the story moves forward and we lean more about the Highland Targe and what it means to be a Guardian. We also see Jeanette's true gifts emerge once she open her heart to Malcolm. The gift she needs to become a Guardian come forth it seems with love. I love the characters in the story. It is well written and a good Fantasy Genre story to read. Jeanette's sister Scotia is up next in bk3 and I hope we come to the conclusion of there fight with the English King Edward.

Guardians of the Targe Series:
Book 1 Highlander Betrayed (my review link, http://wp.me/p40XtX-eA)
Book 2 Highlander Avenged

About the Story: Jeanette MacAlpin is secretly devastated that the Targe didn’t choose her to be Guardian of the Highlands and particularly their clan, rather chose her cousin Rowan MacGregor. Her mother had trained Jeanette well. The only option for Jeanette was to try to train her cousin and do it quickly before the English come back to finish the job they started – to destroy the castle and take the Targe to King Edward.

Rowan has been working for a fortnight to get the ritual and words performed properly, but just can’t do it and finally says she won’t continue training. Frustration abounds and friction ensues between the pair where before these cousins were the best of friends.

Jeanette’s sister, Scotia, was wild before the Englishman murdered her mother. She is impossible now. She hates the English, shoots daggers from her eyes and finds it hard to even accept Nicholas, the leader of their clan, who is half English.

Leaving the castle to rid herself of the frustration Jeanette walks to the special place her mother took her and finds a man with an injured arm bending over the pool. Malcolm MacKenzie had been injured in battle months previous, and could not get the wound to heal on his sword arm. He had heard of the healing pool in this area and sought it out.

Jeanette was wary, but had a knack for reading people. She felt safe with this man. Leaving back to the castle together they were ambushed by some Englishmen. The two are thrown together to save each other and as destiny has ordained they were meant to meet.

Jeanette and Malcolm both had their duty to their clans. Are they strong enough to choose what destiny claims?

My Thoughts: Ms. Wittig continues her well-told enthralling story of the Targe. It is every bit as good as book 1, Highlander Betrayed. It takes us further into the peril this clan faces. Her dialog with its authentic turn of phrase puts the reader amongst the heather and people of the highlands.

This story is about Jeanette and Malcolm – a poignant, tender love story, told with feeling and passion surrounded by danger. It is also about Jeanette singly, who lost her reason for being, yet will become more than she thought she could.

Malcolm is a brave warrior ready to protect both his clan and Jeanette’s even if he is unable to hold his sword. He wants Jeanette to heal him so he can return to the battlefield. Jeanette promised to heal him and in exchange he would help protect her clan while in staying at the castle, that is, what’s left of it. But Malcolm receives much more. In Jeanette he finds peace and happiness, but knows that duty is calling on the battlefield and so struggles with his feelings.

Ms. Wittig draws the reader into the lovers’ pain of loving who yet are not able to make the final commitment. I enjoyed watching them grow, each discovering who they are. Their heartache of duty, honor and eventual separation, well described by the author, is palpable.

We get to know Scotia better in book 2 as well. Of the three cousins, she is the most complex. I look forward to the last book of the series, Lady Triumphs sharing Scotia’s story.

I thought this was a good read, but I liked the first book a little better.

Jeanette and Malcolm are extremely likable leads and I found myself really rooting for their HEA. And for awhile that seemed hopeless.

Ms Wittig does a superb job of writing this story - the imagery she depicts makes it very easy for the reader to picture the scenes.

While it is oblivious that this tale is not over, I am sure I will read the next book - Even though, I don't really care for Scotia - she was a spoiled flirt in the first book and portrayed as bitter and self centered in this book. After what happened with Myles in this book because of Scotia's self centeresness - I am not sure I can forgive or respect her.

I am also getting a strong "Charmed" vibe - you know "the power of three will set you free" kind of feeling.

Good second story.

Hated Scotia. Barely liked Janette. Loved Rowan so much more. How different they all are. Almost like I’d rather the subsequent books also be told from Rowan’s point of view.

Two guardians. Didn’t see that coming at the end of the first. Now I’m guessing the pain in the arse Scotia will be one too - insert eye roll.

Audible: superb narrator.

As the 2nd in the series, this was fast-moving and evenly paced. Better proofreading and editing than the first book on the series and thoroughly enjoyable.

This second book in the series was as good as I had hoped. Had to start the last book right away. You know it will take all 3 women, but it's how they get their powers that is fun.

Jeanette MacAlpin trained her whole life to become the next Guardian of the Highland Targe, so when her cousin Rowan is unexpectedly chosen for the honor when her mother is murdered, Jeanette is left not only grieving, but also feeling completely adrift. Compounding her misery, Rowan seems utterly unable to master the skills Jeanette must now teach her to be an effective Guardian for their clan. Their mutual frustration, compounded by fears of an impending repeat attack by the English, lead Rowan and Jeanette to argue over Jeanette's disappointed hopes and dreams for being the clan's Guardian. She leaves the castle in a huff and stumbles upon Malcolm MacKenzie, an injured warrior and heir to clan MacKenzie, desperately trying to heal his sword arm. He and Jeanette strike a bargain: Jeanette will use her healing skills to rehabilitate his sword arm in exchange for his lending his skills in battling the English as an advisor to the MacAlpins until he is well enough to return to Robert the Bruce's army. But as Jeanette heals his arm, he heals her wounded heart and passion simmers between them. When Rowan has already been chosen as Guardian, why would Jeanette be developing any gifts now? What does that mean for her role in clan MacAlpin? When his arm heals, will Malcom forsake his duties as a soldier to Robert the Bruce and as heir to the lairs of clan MacKenzie or is his love for Jeanette strong enough to compel him to stay? Does Jeanette have a significant enough role to compel her to stay with clan MacAlpin, or will her love for Malcolm give her a new purpose and direction in life?

This sequel to Highlander Betrayed delivered all I expected from the series in terms of action and suspense. The author does a good job depicting the enmity between the Scots and the English, as well as the perfidy of some Scots clans that chose to fight on the English side. The use of magic requires a little too much suspension of belief for my taste (seems like to an even greater degree than in book 1 in this series), but since this is listed under the "paranormal" genre, and the Highlands are full of stories about magic and the fae, I suppose I can't argue too much. I listened to this book on audible, and as is always the case with Phil Gigante, the performance was excellent. His deep, resonant voice is particularly suited to Scottish warriors!

4.5/5 stars

Narration: Third person – mostly through Jeanette and Malcom

Character Development: The two main characters of the book, Jeanette and Malcom, are introduced with problems right off. From the last book, Jeanette’s mother was killed by the English spy, and Rowan (her cousin) has become the next Guardian of the Targe. She feels lost and unsure what her future holds. She grew up learning how to manage the stone, but now her cousin has taken that away from her. Her home is literally in shambles, and with the threats of the English coming back, she has a lot on her plate. When Malcom is introduced, he is injured and very close to a life-threatening infection. He is confused from the battle he fought in months before. He is supposed to be the leader and excellent fighter for the King. He is also to become the next chief of his clan. However, after battle that almost left him for dead and abandoned, he is not well physically. His hand does not work as it should and his infection keeps returning. As the book progresses, the relationship between Jeanette and Malcom grows. Jeanette learns more about herself and hidden abilities that question the chronicles that have been passed down through many MacAlpin generations. Malcom learns about making choices and how there is something more out there than fighting. They each help each other grow into a stronger person.

Plot Development/Flow: The story flows well. At first it might be a little slow as the characters are built up and the past book is reviewed, but everything starts picking up speed when English soldiers enter the picture. In this book, more is learned about the Targe, but also more questions are raised. I liked the how Jeanette and Rowan worked together and the support of Malcom in the turn of events. The story leaves off for another story to follow.

Standalone or Part of a Series: Second book in the Guardians of the Targe series.

3.5 stars / 2 flames

This book picks up where Highlander Betrayed left off. Rowan has been made Guardian of the Targe, and has married Nicholas and made him chief of Clan MacAlpin. If you read my first review, you will remember that I switched to the audible narration for a portion of the book and it caused a huge disconnect for me because I didn't care for the narrator. Well, this book, I started with the audible narration (same narrator) and, even though I am not a fan of this narrator, I enjoyed this book more than the first one.

Jeanette was eldest daughter of the last guardian, so she is dealing with her life now that her fate has been seemingly changed. She is fighting with Rowan, who will not allow Jeanette to train her in the ways of the guardian So Jeanette is a bit lost and unsure of what her position should be in the clan. She meets an injured highland warrior, Malcolm, fresh from fighting with Robert the Bruce. A relationship quickly develops and Jeanette begins thinking she could be happy with a different destiny. However, that old destiny rears its head and changes everything again. I liked Jeanette and Malcolm - they both seemed to have a lot of personal growth in this book.

There was more of the supernatural element in this book - and I felt that part was well done. It was mixed into the various aspects of the story without overshadowing it. I also liked the symbolism of the stag in Jeanette's visions, and those historical cave etchings were really cool. I was also happy to see that I was right in my prediction in my review of Highlander Betrayed that the supernatural element would extend to all three girls. I didn't like that it was ripped away from Jeanette and Scotia in the first book. Speaking of Scotia - I really do not care for her. She is going to have to really grow up for her to be redeemed in her book, Highlander Redeemed.

The second in the her Highlander series, this book is about Jeanette MacAlpin, daughter of the former Guardian of the Targe, who spent her entire life expecting to become the next guardian when her cousin became it instead. Now, not only is Jeanette not the guardian, she also saw her mother murdered by a traitorous spy while lying ill in her bed! Feeling forlorn, Jeanette snuck out of the castle one to wander the woods seeking a measure of peace when she came upon a wounded man by the burn. He begged her not to kill him and swore to her that he wasn't one of the hated English but a member of King Robert Bruce's army. If she would help him heal, he'd help her clan prepare for the certain attack by Edward's English soldiers. First thing he did was to tell them that they must abandon the nearly destroyed castle and they fled to some hidden caves for protection. At first, Rowan and Nicholas, the new guardian and new chief of Clan MacAlpin were unsure of Malcolm but soon his knowledge wins them over. As Jeanette and Malcolm work together to prepare her clan for battle and search out all possible avenues of attack, they spend a lot of time alone together. Not only that, they discover a passion and true love. Will their destinies keep them apart?

A great second book in this series, it does move slower than the first one. I would also recommend reading the books in order as it'll help to understand the underlying plot lines. I can hardly wait for Scotia's story; that girl is going to have a good one!

Note: I received a copy of this book for free through GoodReads FirstReads.

The only complaint I had about this book was that it was advertised as a romance novel and it turned out to be more of a fantasy-adventure novel instead. Otherwise, even though I hadn't read the first book in the series I could still follow along without a problem. Enough was explained of the events from the first book that it wouldn't ruin the story of the first book if I decided to read it after having read the second one, but I would still be able to comprehend the events of the second book without having to read the previous one. As I was mentioning about the romance part of this book, there was a romance and it was a well-written romance, if a little bit unbelieveable. The steaminess level of this romance was about medium. There was only two fairly intimate scenes, including the one and only sex scene. Kissing is featured a lot more throughout the book rather than intimacy. I would have liked to see a little bit more of a romance development and more steam, but that is the only complaint I have. This is definitely a series I would recommend to someone who likes historical(medival) romance combined with fantasy/magic.

This was as good as the first. I loved it from the start. Continuing on where the first left off. I was happy with the story and where she took it. I was whisked away in the story of Malcolm and Jeanette. Following them as they went on their quest of what place Jeanette had in the clan. Followed Malcolm as he tried to figure out what to do and who he really was.

It has everything you want in a book and keeps you reading. When you set the book down you find your mind wondering back to it and requiring you to finish reading it. I don't think a lengthy review is needed here. Just know when you get this book you will walk away very much a part of it.

Highlander Avenged is the second book in the series and while many books are written independently and can stand alone I really feel that reading the first books is vital to understanding and sympathizing with the characters. Although I really enjoyed that both characters had loyalties to their own people and were willing to sacrifice despite how they felt for eachother I was glad to see that I wasn't let down.
I will be looking for the first and the next book in the series so that I can enjoy it as a whole.

Another great read from Laura Wittig

The story of Jeanette and Malcolm starts with Malcolm being injured and Jeanette vowing to see him healed into the great warrior he is and it becomes so much more.

Without revealing too much of the story I will share that each grows to understand their strengths and challenges as they grow together and find their places in their clans.

A beautiful must read story from a great author. I loved the characters and vivid descriptions...it made me feel I was living the story.

This is one of my favorite books this year. The second in a trilogy about two sisters and one cousin who are all part of the same clan. Rowan's story was the first book. She is now the Guardian and the whole clan is bound to protect her from the greedy king. Jeanette's story is this book and for me it was my favorite. She was the one not chosen to be the guardian and she handles the choice remarkably well. Her story with Malcolm is so honest and true. Both hit it off right from the start and both grow so it was not a challenge to love them. Loved this book!

Second guardian selected

Jeanette MacAlpin has gone into hiding with her clan and is uncertain of her future when she encounters a wounded warrior, Malcolm Mackenzie, at a healing spring. She also comes into her powers as a Guardian and is able to aid in protecting her clan.
This is a story of second chances and after finishing it, I am ready to read the third story in the trilogy.

As I said for Highlander's Betrayed.. The start is very slow but I think the author does it on purpose so you can like fell in love of those details we don't think about and even when the things get rough and the end is very near you find yourself a little hook to the book. If you look for scottish romance with a little hint of passion, this is the book for you. :D

A continuation of "Highlander Betrayed" and just as good!
"Highlander Avenged" picks up right where "Betrayed" left off. Rowan has been given the power of the Guardian of the Targe and is still trying to learn how to wield her powers with the help of Jeanette.

Laurin Wittig has become one of my favorite authors. This characters in the Guardians of the Targe series are so fun and so endearing that I want to become one of the clan!! :-) Now I'm waiting anxiously for the next one!
