The thrilling and world-spanning second Orcs trilogy, collected for the first time! After the success of his blockbusting and bestselling series Orcs, Stan Nicholls has returned to his tough-talking, hard-bitten gang of grunts. These are Orcs with a difference. These Orcs are heroes. Although they're not exactly nice. Containing all three books in the second Orcs trilogy, this omnibus follows the Wolverines - Captain Stryke and his band of followers - on a dimension-crossing adventure of blood, swords, magic and, every so often, a little kindness. Collected here for the first time, this companion volume to Orcs is a must for any fantasy reader's shelf. We know the victors write history. Now it's time to learn what the foot-soldiers think.
Stan Nicholls (born 1949) is a British author and journalist, working full-time since 1981. He is the author of many novels and short stories but is best known for the internationally acclaimed Orcs: First Blood series.
I had such high hopes for this book and I clung onto them for as long as I could before anger and disappointment took over right at the end!
This is the 5th book by the author that Ive read and every one is marred by the same issues. The story is well told and the characters well built and believable. The problems however are thus:
1. There are a lot of story devices introduced throughout the book that after 800 pages turn out to be pivotal pieces of the story which last about 1 paragraph and feel almost totally wasted.
2. There are a few bits of story which just aren't believable (even if it is a fantasy novel). The thing I love about well written fantasy is that you can get so engrossed in it that you forget it's all made up species, but when a faun apparently climbs trees with its hooves that's just a step too far!
3. Whilst this book doesn't suffer the exact same proof reading issues that ruined the quicksilver trilogy for me, it does have some of its own. Most notably the fact that a character in a key plot line (one of those from point 1 above) manages to have their name completely swapped with an already deceased character in the final chapter of the book!
This is a decent story which fantasy fans will likely enjoy, but it's far from a shining example of the genre!
Wederom een heerlijk rechttoe, rechtaan verhaal (Sword & Sorcery) over Kaptein Struyk en zijn Veelvraten. Vanaf deel 1 t/m deel 3 is het actie, actie en nog is actie!
The story starts off great though it is a shame a character is brought back that died in the first book. I think she adds no value to the book yet she is an essential character in this story which made me weary to finish the book.
The last book of this trilogy was the biggest annoyance to read. Everything happens so fast but nothing happens. The end is rather a let down and not that well done.
The first 2 books are good but the last part is what makes this trilogy bittersweet.
