4.5 ⭐️ | What a raw, emotional & necessary read! As a serial k!ller targets black women, Detective Campbell doesn’t seem to care, because these women are not “a part of his tribe”. Ohhhh but Detective Khalil wasn’t having it! When Asha begins to experience some uncanny things, the cops are literally not taking her serious! These cops infuriated me in this story.

With a sanctimonious mother that isn’t worth the air she’s breathing, police she can’t trust, & a serial k!ller on the loose, Asha is literally stuck between a rock & a hard place. And Pastor Quill 🤯. Let’s just say everyone failed Asha!

Her story was heartbreaking yet admirable because she chose to not give up & do whatever it took to secure her safety. What I loved most about this story, was the realness of it all. How this could be real life for someone. Overall, I really enjoyed this debut novel & hope to see a book 2. It was definitely left open for a potential second book. The story was well written, and left me wanting more.

"The Bones That Speak” by C.S. Jean is a 4-star dark psychological thriller! Asha is working on a college project with her friend Charlie, looking into a cold case from the 1980s. Things don’t go as expected, and Asha soon finds herself in the crosshairs of a serial killer. Meanwhile, the FBI is investigating the murders of other young women in the area.

The story is told from three points of view: Asha, Agent Khalil, and The Shadow. If I had known beforehand how strongly religion themed it was, I probably would have passed, but I’m glad I didn’t! Overall, this was a great story that I’d recommend. There was a stretch in the middle where the pacing slowed a bit, but it picked up again with plenty of twists and turns. I hope there’s a second book featuring Asha and Khalil because I’ll be sure to read it!

Wow! Amazing job by CS Jean!! I really enjoyed this story!

The Bones That Speak is intense and emotional. Asha’s story pulled me in right away—she’s strong, smart, and fighting to be heard. C.S. Jean’s writing is sharp and powerful with just the right mix of suspense and heart.

Every twist kept me turning pages. CS Jean added in religious trauma making it cult-like and suffocating, and Jean didn’t shy away from showing how deep that damage runs. It’s not just a mystery—it’s about healing, truth, and standing up when no one wants to listen.

This was a dark, Christian twisted thriller with a slight bit of romance. This was exactly what I needed to end the month of September with .

Asha Harris carried so much guilt after her friend went missing after they went searching for clues for a cold case from the 80s for a class they were in together, unfortunately after they separated her friend Charlie was taken. Asha ended up being a target for the serial killer.

I really ended up at the edge of my seat reading this because of how amazing the suspense was, i truly had no idea what was gonna happen next. This story gave me chills! I did suspect the killer about 20% into the book and I was correct on who it was!

There was a slow burn romance when it came to Asha and the FBI agent Khalil. As the started as strangers meeting on a dating app to end up in the same small town. He did whatever it took to keep her safe and to catch the killer.

The Bones That Speak, speak the loudest. Honestly I have been waiting for this book for 👏 so 👏 LONG 👏
I absolutely love this thriller from CS and devoured every page while packing up our house to move. There were some days I just needed to stop, reverse it, reread it back, and then move on. Cause ARE YOU KIDDING ME 😱
THIS BOOK 📚 The twists and turns and drops and climbs. I cant. Its too good. I know i saw smut or nothing but me and Ms Jean have been a battle of wills for this release. I craved every second of TBBS. This author is going to sky rocket. I cannot wait for book 2. quite literally foaming at the mouth for the next installment of sick and twisted male minds. She hooks you with religious trauma. She makes you beg for the next chapter of clues. She will have you questioning the characters, and running for some answers. UGH I CANT WAIT. Thank you for this amazing release I can definitely see why we needed a push back in dates. This book was marinated in suspense and ATE I TELL YOU!

It’s been a while since I’ve picked up a psychological thriller, and The Bones That Speak was a confronting and genuinely creepy read. The story follows a serial killer targeting young Black Christian women, a premise that immediately feels chilling and socially charged.

Asha Harris and her best friend Charlie fit the killer’s profile, and when Charlie disappears while investigating a cold case, Asha becomes the next likely target. Enter Kahil, a young FBI agent with a murky past, who’s determined to protect Asha, and maybe find some redemption along the way.

As the story unfolded, I did manage to guess who the killer was, but that final chapter made it clear there’s WAY more beneath the surface. The pacing was tight and the writing strong, but with so many unanswered questions left dangling, it was hard for me to love this one completely.

Still, it’s an engaging, suspenseful read that fans of dark psychological thrillers will likely enjoy, especially those who don’t mind an open-ended conclusion.

I honestly had no idea what to expect with this genre but I loved this book! It was interesting and kept my attention. I didn’t want to stop reading when it was time for me to go to sleep.

The main character Asha is a criminology major who also happens to live in an area that is being investigated due to a possible serial killer. Asha is also struggling with her faith. She begins questioning things and she is being pulled in multiple directions from her mother, her pastor and her friends.

One night Asha and her friend decide to go to the abandoned house of one of the victims, to see if they can find clues. Her friend ends up being taken from the house. Later, she finds out that she herself is being targeted by the killer.

Khalil is a new FBI agent who is partaking in the investigation. He also happens to meet Asha under a secret name on a messaging platform.

If you like thrillers, this book is for you! And now with the way it ended, I am ready for book number two 😅.

A dark, twisted Christian thriller..something I never thought I would ever read, let alone love. I had no clue this was a thing, but WOW!

Asha is a criminology major and recently investigating a local murder that may be due to a possible serial killer. She starts to question her faith, her pastor, and her mother. And when her best friend goes missing, she starts to question more.

This book you get 3 POVs: Asha, Detective Khalil, and The Shadow. Detective Khalil is helping her to solve the murders and they become closer. But they have also met under a different name on a messaging app. This entire book had me lured in. The disgust I had for some of the people in Asha’s life. This book had me sick and furious with some of them. But man, this book had me turning the page waiting to see what was happening next.

This book was a first for me, I haven't really read much mystery/thriller novels and that is going to change immediately thanks to The Bones That Speak.

As a complicated Christian, I found myself relating to this book WAY MORE THAN I THOUGHT. It also made me feel SO MUCH with the way that C.S. Jean tackled some incredibly difficult and real issues that women, especially of color, face. And the way she was able to add a little bit of romance and humor throughout the book? I don't know how she did it so effortlessly!

I am EAGER for book 2 already and HIGHLY recommend everyone check this out. Its easy to read and will have you on the edge of your seat!

I was gifted an arc by the author, C.S Jean. The release date is October 30th, 2025.
I went into the book blind and was pleasantly surprised by the theme and writing of the book. The Bones that Speak is about a girl named Asha and her quest to identify a serial killer who has plagued her Christian community. There are 3 POV's, Asha, Khalil, the new FBI agent, and The Shadow. Reading the book kept my interest from start to finish. The different locations C.S Jean takes you to while reading make you feel as if you are in the buildings walking alongside the characters. I thought the ending wrapped up the story very well. I would give a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. I would highly suggest purchasing this book. You will not be disappointed.

OMG... this story hands down is one of the best this year. Its packed with just the right touch of darkness, humor and romance. From the beginning I was invested. The pacing was perfect. The story and characters can be seen as relatable. With every page turn the story spoke with ease. Although I did piece together who the killer was it didn’t disrupt the story or its flow. I still found myself in shock. The twist... wow!! I love Jean's writing style in this book. She's definitely an author I'll be keeping an eye out for.

This is my first time reading a book by C.S. Jean, and I was immediately captivated. It’s a haunting psychological thriller that kept me on the edge of my seat, unable to put it down.

Asha Harris, a strong and complex character burdened by guilt after her friend’s disappearance.
Khalil, the FBI agent, was my absolute favorite. Their slow-burn romance, which began as strangers on a dating app to protect Asha and catch the serial killer, added depth the story.

This was a quick easy read. This is about a serial killer who is killing young Christian girls. There are multiple POVs and it keeps you guessing. When Asha's friend Charlie goes missing she is trying to figure out what happened to her. At the same time trying not to become a victim herself. I will be impatiently waiting for book 2!

Loved it! The Bones that Speak will make you question what happened to Asha? Why is she compelled to find the truth? I think I knew who the killer was, but questioned myself a few times throughout until the end. If you feel you know, sometimes it’s not all a book is about - it’s also about if they get caught, does everyone survive, etc.

I feel like there is more to the story and hope it turns into a series!

I really enjoyed this book. The characters were well done, the plot and suspense were good. It is engaging from the very beginning. I am hoping that by the little cliff hanger in there that this is part of a series of at least a duo. If it isn't, there were a couple things that weren't tied up that I would have liked to see.

So many questions, not enough answers. Yall had me agreeing with a MAN! A MAN!!!! Wild. I was hoping Asha got what she was looking for, honestly. It only pissed me off more that there are actual people like her. How you wanna save your friend when you are a literal walking target!?!??! Now I need book 2 because this cliff got me biting my nails.

This is the author’s debut novel, but you wouldn’t know that by reading the story. The story is full of raw emotion and angst. Asha is everything a Christian girl should be. But even her proof of faith isn’t enough to keep the devil and all their secrets away. Khalil is a young, promising, FBI agent that is dead set on exposing all of the secrets. One thing that I did not expect, is that ending!
