Sunrise Cantina #1

Only the Clonely

Rate this book
The crew of the Scarlet Gaze are figuring out what they want to do now that Lord Straik sa'Rin is no longer running a corsair ship. Some of the a'ani crew want to run a cantina on Risda III.

Kazex just wants Ruthie.

Ruthie just wants to have a nervous breakdown.

Well, she wants Kazex, too. The delicious a'ani chief of security has been a steady, protective, delicious presence ever since she joined the crew. He's made it clear that he loves Ruthie as she is, nervous wreck and all. But Ruthie's afraid of what will happen to their easy friendship if she asks for more. What if kissing his tattoos and touching his sinful body changes things? It's too late for flirting - now it's time for forever. And forever terrifies her.

The only thing more terrifying? Missing her chance with Kazex entirely.

This is a friends-to-lovers between clones (one alien, one human) and starts a new spinoff series that melds the Corsair Brothers series and the Risdaverse stories.

I love Risda III and when I couldn't finish a book to save my life, I decided to try this first in a new series on this delightful planet. The book starts with Ruthie (h) drugged up and being dragged through a space port, but finding safety with a crew (who were first introduced in a different Ruby Dixon series, but no fears, there's a brief intro at the start of the book). Along with being rescued, Ruthie also learns that she's a clone and it's pretty shocking to everyone. Kazex (H) is the security officer for the ship she lands on and immediately took her under his wing, was adorably protective, and instantly devoted. He's all in from first sight AND TELLS HER. Meanwhile, even some time later, Ruthie's still struggling with PTSD and her identity while Kaz is her best friend waiting patiently for whenever she might want more. No worries, even with the mental health struggles, there's lots of humor and sweetness.

Written in first person, dual POV. No ow drama (a human on Risda does flirt with H but he only sees h) and no om drama. Both are inexperienced (h has some memories related to being a clone but nothing of hers and H was on suppressant drugs for a long time, he only "wakes up" for h).

I liked this and esp loved Kaz. I did notice a couple of inconsistencies and I had a hard time with feeling like Ruthie was genuinely on the same level of adoration as him. I felt like he loved her a lot more than she loved him. It was also a little confusing because Kaz was so clear in his affection and Ruthie would question it to death and make it seem as though he wasn't easy to read. I realize this was her intrusive thoughts happening, it was hard though. Ruthie's anxiety also presents as overwhelmed with any type of decision and though she feels deeply about him, she's terrified of change so gives him mixed signals, which Kaz often misinterprets as him messing up or not being needed. It hurt my heart to see these two flounder so much. But their bond was genuinely sweet and when they were clicking, they were so lovely together.

The progression of steaminess also didn't quite hit the way I wished it did to start. The scenes were good, but Ruthie has to be the instigator because Kaz is giving her space, except this dynamic doesn't work well. She also wants to watch Kaz and then because of her anxiety presenting, her actions afterwards wouldn't mesh well with what had just occurred imo. They do still have some hot scenes and Ruthie gets a piercing that requires intimacy and overloads Kaz's horniness levels multiple times lol.

The third act conflict made sense for Ruthie challenging herself, but how she went about it was not my favorite. I loved that she had the success to bolster herself though and to FINALLY be on the same page as Kaz. Kaz's reaction was exactly as I expected and it was precious. The ending is HFN of them a solid couple being cute and making plans with others from the ship for opening this cantina for humans on Risda. Even when I don't love one of these stories, I still enjoy them and they make for a happy read for me. I'm glad Ruby Dixon's expanding this world, this series is going to have some fun with these clones y'all.

only 35% in and Ruthie is already annoying the heck out of me. She’s used up all my sympathy, and this is coming from someone WITH anxiety. She just needs to shit or get off the pot. This isn’t even angst. It’s just watching her be a weak, waffly, annoying idiot leading my poor angel Kazex on. Ugh!

52%
my opinion of Ruthie has only worsened. Yeah i get that it’s her PTSD that makes her such an idiot but why on earth would anyone want to read about that? Where’s the character arc where she snaps out of it or tries to better herself? If this is just gonna be one of those wishy washy heroines who strings the hero along while trampling on his sweet angel baby feelings the entire time and he loves her anyways…well good for them but wtf. I’m still going to try to finish this. But i’m forcing myself at this point. I have no hope that Ruthie as a character will improve.

Ok i finished it:
Would not reread. I spent the second half of the book wondering when it would end. God Ruthie was annoying. Only thing that saved this from a 1 star review was Kazex. He’s a 5 star hero, but unfortunately Ruthie is a -10 star heroine. Ruthie definitely needed a hero like him, but at the same time from a reader’s pov a hero like him is wasted on a heroine like her bc i didn’t enjoy the story.

I did not like this one. The beginning is great and Kaz is so instalovey possessive hero and I was loving it. But the heroine. Bruh. Weak heroines are not for me. I don’t want to read it, it’s cringey and awkward. I think I’m supposed to be endeared to this woman with all of her issues but really I’m bored and no to this woman.

Kazex is a long time favorite but honestly I am here for Risda. Straik's crew are all sweet angel babies. I wanna see my stupid clone sons build lives. I want cameos. I want to see what the hybrid babies look like as they grow up. I want to kick my feet and blush at first kisses. I want them to find 10 more Crulden clones in the basement. I want someone to figure out hamburgers.

What a Book!!

This series follows characters from the Corsairs series and I love it. Ruby has a way of locking me in for life with series after series including their spinoffs. Kazex is Lord Straik’s head of security and he’s madly in love with Straik’s mate Ruth’s clone named Ruthie. What starts as a friendship based on protection builds into so much more. Every day their bond grows stronger and stronger. Kazex sits there pining waiting for the day when Ruthie will make her his and even if he has to wait a lifetime for his mate he’s willing to wait until he can make Ruthie his!!

Short and sweet

This was a nice novella with a dreamy MMC and traumatized FMC. Kazex was often a bit too perfect IMO, like his personality was dominated by wanting to be everything to Ruthie. He did come out to be more fun loving and have a couple other traits, but he could’ve been more well rounded. Ruthie was relatable for me with her panic attacks and decision making paralysis. She and Kazex had built a solid friendship, so she had the trust in him she needed for a long lasting relationship. It’s fun to see the A’ani males get their first HEA.

Spice: 3/5

Triggers: panic attacks, trauma from medical stuff (cloning), nightmares involving drowning, mention of SA of side character, slavery and trafficking

The book review that got my Amazon account banned from reviewing for:

I've tried to talk to real people at Amazon with no success. I only get bot responses when I contact them. I've put in several tickets for this issue, asked to have this and a review for 220pcs Tulip Cupcake Liners (that also did not meet community guidelines) inspected by a human and re-evaluated. No response on that ticket. I called customer service who put in a ticket with the community help people for me and again no response.

It is amazing to me that there are so many fake one and two line reviews out there and they shut down my reviewing capability. *shakes head*

I have reviewed 2800 items for Amazon and had 2 or 3 issues and they shut down my account. Just crazy to me.

Only the Cloney is the first book in Sunrise Cantina ,  a spin off series set in the Risdaverse on Risda III, a sanctuary planet for some of the humans that have been abducted in saved over the years.  While this is a new series, I think to really have a good foundation you will need to have read at least a few of the other books in the Risdaverse to really enjoy it.

Kazex is a clone and part of the crew of Lord Straik sa'Rin's corsair ship.  He fell for Ruthie at first sight when she was brought aboard the ship, saved from a slaver market.  She has the face of Lord Straik sa'Rin's mate Ruth and it was established in some of the other books that the original Ruth was used and split into multiple clones.  It is not clear they are clones though as it was done of the black market and they didn't get the required red skin marker.  Ruthie, our story's clone has a serious case of PTSD and Kazex has decided he is her champion and will be patient as she gets her feet under her.

I loved Kazex in this.  He is adorable and sometimes like a teenager with his biological urges since he was on suppressants for that most of his life.  He is sweet, kind, patient and absolutely committed to Ruthie.  He is also completely oblivious to when other women try to hit on him and it is adorable.  Ruthie on the other hand is a mess.  She is in the middle of an identity crisis with two of her sisters (clones) on the ship she keeps trying to figure out who she is.  Both Ruth and Ruthanne seem to have it all together and know exactly who they are, while Ruthie can't seem to make some simple decisions.

Kazex is very patient with Ruthie, maybe too patient, but one they figure out they are going to move forward with the relationship it gets a little more interesting.  To help Ruthie take charge they find a way to give her a safe word to use when she is feeling overwhelmed.  Some of this is really adorable, but Ruthie wasn't a heroine I ever connected with.  She is such a limp 'noodle' in so many ways and I just wanted her to take control of her life a little.  There are multiple sex scenes in this, but the beginning ones are a bit strange with two very inexperienced people.

The other clones from the ship are trying to figure out what to do since Lord Straik isn't going to be pirating anymore in the near future anyway.  One of them has a dream to set up a cantina on the planet.  I loved the differences between our little gaggle of clones as they try to figure out how to strike out on their own.  Those were some of the funniest moments in the book as they try to decide how to get the cantina and what to call it.

I have read a lot of books by Ruby Dixon and usually enjoy them a lot.  This was not a favorite, but that probably had a lot to do with not connecting with the heroine who was setting the pace of the romance.  I really wanted Kazex to just take control of the wooing, while we did get that later in the book with a safety word, it was later in the story.  Overall I think the enjoyment of the story is going to depend on if you like Ruthie and connect to her.
"I wanted to call it 'A Very Safe Cantina For Human Females Only.'"
"Get it all on the sign," Jerzec agrees.
"Make sure they know this is a place for them." Aithar nods.
"You might as well roll up with a white van and offer candy," Ruthie says between giggles.
"You think we should offer candy?" Aithar asks. Ruthie only laughs harder.
"Sounds...like...a trap," Ruthie manages between wheezing laughs.

Narration:
Todd McLaren and Rebecca Estrella take on the dual PoV in this book.  I'm used to Mason Lloyd and Hollie Jackson for most of the books by Ruby Dixon set in this universe with a few exceptions but I think they did a good job.  I normally listen at 1.5x speed but found I needed to bump it up a little due to the different pacing of their performance and listened at 1.75x speed.  The switch from PoVs was clear and each narrator captured the vulnerability and innocence of the characters they were performing.  Clear voices and diction rounded out their performances.

Character development: 🙂🥰😎😄
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Narration Type: Dual Narration

The heroine: Ruthie - she was a human slave on a slave ship, being brought to be sold. They had her all drugged out and easy to handle. She didn’t really know what was going on, but she was quickly bought by a man named Lord Straik Sa’rin and his two red alien guards. One of the guards takes off her chains and tells her she is safe now. They bring her to their ship, the Scarlet Gaze.

The Hero: Kasex - he is a’ani, which is a race of alien clones, designated by their red color, who were cloned and bred to be slave labor. Until Lord Sa’rin freed him from laboring in the asteroid mines, he and his brethren were forced to do hard labor for little food for years on end. He is now the chief of security on the Scarlett Gaze. He knows as soon as he sees Ruthie that she is his mate, though he doesn’t want to scare her, so he just lets her sleep in his bed while he keeps guard outside the door at night.

The Story: Ruthie thought she was abducted from earth, but when she gets to the Scarlett Gaze, and meets Lord Sa’rin’s wife Ruth, who has her face, she learns she is a clone. Later she meets another who goes by the name Ruth Ann. Ruthie has a lot of internal turmoil with being a clone and having “sisters” with her face. Unlike Kasex, who has always known what he was and had always been around many others with the same face. As Ruthie struggles for her identity, she cuts her hair in a mohawk, gets a bunch of piercings and does whatever she can to make herself unique.

I love that Ruby Dixon started a new series in this same universe as the Risdaverse and Ice Planet Barbarians. This was a good story and had lots of angst with Ruthie coming to terms with the fact that she is a clone. I can imagine how traumatic that would be. I mean, it isn’t just seeing others with your face, which could happen with twins or triplets separated at birth, but with clones, they have memories which weren’t really theirs, they were memories of the person they were cloned from, so it would suck to not be able to trust what parts of you are you and what parts aren’t. I also liked the fact that her “sister clones” each had their own differences and not just their hair and adornments.

Ruthie is a pretty weak character, though that isn’t always a bad thing. Especially at first. She takes steps to make herself stronger. Though she has trouble making decisions, which apparently is a thing with some clones. Whenever she needs to make any kind of choice, she gets all in her head weighing the pros and cons of each choice, until she just can’t decide either way. I loved the fact that Kasex eventually found her a coin that she could toss to make decisions and that helped her quite a bit. He also decided at some point not to give her a choice for little things because he knew she would fret over it when really it wasn’t something even worth it.

This audiobook was done in dual points of view via dual narration and was narrated by Todd McClaren and Rebecca Estrella. Todd was ok, but not great. I mean he was a good narrator, but his voice wasn’t my favorite. I like Ruby Dixon’s usual narrators, Mason Lloyd and Sean Crisden, though maybe it is just what I am used to. Rebecca Estrella had a nice voice and sounded very natural. I did like her quite a bit.

Communication break down between alien species is always hilarious in these books. These por alien men just don’t get it BUT it’s so funny.

This story follows a couple of clones. Kazex an a'ani clone and Ruthie a human clone (who didn’t know she was a clone). These two fall for each other on day one but she needs more time. And Kez is so patient and loving and simply the best. It’s a new spin off and you don’t need to read the rest beforehand but I recommend it.

This was fine, not my favorite Ruby Dixon book but an okay time. I think it could have been a novella (or just shorter) and I would have enjoyed it more. Basically she wakes up, had been drugged and dragged through a space fort and realizes she’s a clone, her world is rocked. Around the same time she meets the hero who is a security officer and takes her under his protection.

It started off strong but I felt like I got everything I needed out of it and it could have just been a shorter read. I wasn’t wild for the characters in this one, the heroine especially wasn’t a fav.

4.5 / 5.0

Good and not so good in this one.

First off, the not so… I didn’t like that the MMC was such a waffle. He decided he loved her, was equal part supportive and ignorant of her decisions, and had no real personality. Jerok from a previous Risdaverse/Corsairs crossover (actually a major story line since it bridges the original corsairs with the group that finds Ruth, and so here we are), he and Sofie have a similar dynamic and PTSD in spades, but they are both more interesting and developed characters in fewer words.

It was possibly the instalove from the MMC that got me, I don’t care for that trope at all, but the FMC is also rather weak in character. Neither is very developed and their angst isn’t cohesive. I felt like I was watching two people pretend at life and no one had any real backbone or direction.

Like I said, waffles… 🧇

For the good, I like there’s a new story in this universe. I liked seeing new characters and old sprinkled through the story, it really fills the universe and gives a completed aura to the settings.

Dixon isn’t one to bow to trope trends and she forges her own path when it comes to what she writes. Her best books are always ones that feel like they aren’t scraping down to the mass market, which keeps her fans happy because we can all do with less drivel and more direction. She is queen of the extended plot arcs and I am excited to see this new season of Risdaverse get going.

Overall, it’s a good quick read, the smut is fun and playful, and the characters get the story told even if they are bland.

Until Next Time,
MC

I think this is the first time I've 2-starred a Ruby book.

I never read the Corsairs series, but the recap at the beginning was helpful for setting the scene. One star for making the book accessible to readers who skipped that series.

There is a difference between wanting to represent people who suffer from anxiety and creating a character so one-dimensional that their only defining feature is constant indecisiveness caused by anxiety. Ruthie is a horrible character. She had zero character growth for nearly the entire book, and when it finally did happen, it was difficult to believe. Most of her scenes are just her freaking out in her head, a lot of it about things that I imagine most people would come to terms with in the months of time that pass before the story really begins.

Speaking of one-dimensional characters: Kazex. It says a lot that I just had to look at the book synopsis to find out what his name is again, despite finishing this book within the past 18 hours. His one defining feature is that he insta-loves Ruthie, so everything is centered around her. I know basically nothing about Kazex aside from he loves Ruthie. Nothing to make him interesting, nothing is relatable, no character growth as he doesn't change at all the entire book, no characteristics that show that he has his own life and interests. Add in the fact that his love for Ruthie is cringe obsessive, which only gets worse as the story progresses, and this dude is a big thumbs down red flag kind of guy.

So, I gave one star for the helpful Corsairs catch-up at the beginning. The second star is for the epilogue. It was the only chapter I liked in the entire book. There was humor, camaraderie, progression, etc. Had the character interplay been more like that throughout, this would have been an entirely different story.

I really wanted to like this book, because Ruby is one of my go-to authors. Unfortunately, this one falls flat, much like its characters.

This was not good, to the point it took me nearly a month to read it.

The begining and idea were fun, but the characters were so boring.
I could not stand Ruthie. I get Dixon is trying to represent all kinds of people, and sometimes she’s gets it right but unfortunately sometimes it’s a big miss, and this one was a big miss. There is more to anxiety than crippling indecision, but that was all Ruthie had. She was such a flat one dimensional character I didn’t care about her at all.
We don’t even get her back story. We know she’s a clone, but what if anything did she experience before the Corsair crew found/rescued her? Such a let down after how vibrant of a character Ruth is.
Ruthie has no real growth as a character, we don’t even really get the feeling she’s in love with Kaz. She just decides one day she is. Funny how she didn’t seem to have anxiety with that big emotion when she had it for everything else.

Kaz isn’t much better. Again no background on him really. They don’t discuss anything of their histories together. I couldn’t even tell you if he was or wasn’t a virgin. Same with Ruthie. Kaz even acknowledges he doesn’t know if she is or not. But he doesn’t bother to ask or talk about it.
He’s at least sweet, if boring. Not much to him. I had a hard time remembering he was an a’ani even. No reply descriptions of him for the reader to help visualize.

I was really looking for something good after reading the awful When She’s Handy, but back to back bad books by Dixon was not what I had planned.

This is part of a cute series in the Risdaverse. It focuses on 3 sister-clones, one of which we met earlier. In an environment as large as RD's. it's difficult to invent new character traits and romantic situations. She succeeds with these novellas.

I recommend binge-reading these, independent of other RD series. They're all good.

Ruby Dixon's writing has seriously tanked in the last few years, all of her recent books are just boring and contrived, and this one is no exception. There's no real conflict here, it relies on an emotional and completely un-confident FMC and a ridiculous amount of miscommunication to advance the story. I can't stand weak and whiny main characters or a lack of the most basic communication so this was a big flop for me.

Also, the narrators pronounce "Kazex" and "A'ani" differently than literally every other book which is a major issue for me because it jerks me out of the story every time. There's really no excuse for this in today's publishing industry. Maybe it's not as big of a deal for other people but it really ruins the story for me.

I have loved many of her books so I truly don't understand the recent drop in quality, but I'm close to giving up on her.

Ruby Dixon. She's written a pile of awesome scifi romances. She literally started the blue alien dude trend that continues to this day. Most of her series are great and really fun reads.

This new series is a melding of the Risdah and Coursairs series, both favorites of mine. It sounds like there are more stories to cone with Coursair characters settling on Risdah III. I'm looking forward to it.

RD tens to write a slightly more gentle story. Her characters often have adventures, sometimes very dark, with hot sex, too. But they tend to be a little gentler in other ways. I love her writing.

This story involves the clones of Ruth, a human trafficked from Earth in the past and used to create an unknown number of clones. Ruth (not the original but a clone) figured in earlier stories in her rescue and relationship with Lord Straik, who captains the ship where a number of cloned folks live. Ruthie, a recently rescued clone, has just arrived on the ship and is struggling to come into her own. She also builds relationships with another clone named Ruth Ann. The 3 Ruth clones are each quite different characters. There are also crew mates from another cloned race. Clones are universally illegal, so these refugees are trying to stay on the down low. Risdah III is a refuge fir Earth women and others who were previously enslaved, so this is a good place for the clones to hole up and possibly build lives. There's a whole series about the human women who live on Risdah, and I highly recommend that.

This story is about Ruthie and her budding relationship with Kaz. It's sweet and kind, the perfect kickoff story for a new series.

RD writes a separate prologue in every book called "Who the Hell are These People, Ruby?" This brief section recaps the storyline and provides a little background on the characters and happenings. So you can pick up a book anywhere in a series and not feel too lost. She also mentions potential triggers for those who like to know.

This story is sweet, but I would have enjoyed a bit more action. This is in line with the Rusdah III books since they involve formerly enslaved human women who are building new lives. Action is not on their minds!

This is a good intro to RD books and her numerous worlds.

Giving this five stars, but...

...I do have to say that some of the more recent Ruby stories (from all the intertwined series) are less action, more agonizing thought processes. While the author clearly is trying to be all things to all people, I'm honestly not sure it's succeeding.

This book was a solid 2.5 stars as far as Ruthie herself was concerned, mainly because of how huge of a turnaround her personality makes in a very short time. I'd have found it more believable to have had her turnaround happen earlier, then to have more story that shows the ongoing challenges someone with PTSD faces...one step forwards, sometimes two back. We didn't get that, and it lacks authenticity as a result. You CAN have a happy ending, but to infer that's once you find happiness and are making progress that "all is well, forevermore" does actual survivors dirty.

Kazex is a five-star hero, maybe even six stars, paired with Ruthie. Absolutely nothing to dislike about him.

Glimpses of previous characters are there, but so brief as to be unsatisfying. If we're hoping to see more from Ruthie as far as what I already pointed out, I feel it's rather unlikely with this author.

And we are not seeing much development of our knowledge of Risda... it's still very vanilla as a planet. This isn't entirely unexpected, based on the lack of exploration of "Not Hoth" we saw in IPB and Icehome--but it is a clear weakness of this author's, and this many books later is still very disappointing as far as what storytelling potential is being wasted.

Instead, this series is bogged down in trying to represent everyone and every issue we as humans struggle with...which without anyone actually DOING anything fun or positive (other than getting laid) invalidates those who struggle for real who DESERVE to see their heroes do more than just survive one more day. They deserve to seize the day and make it their b*tch.

I listened to this on audiobook while doing chores around the house (my favorite way to consume Ruby Dixon alien books at this point lol) so I might not have been giving it the most attention, but I found it kinda boring. The friends to lovers wasn’t that exciting, Ruthie’s hangups about being a clone were annoying and drawn out. I like a scared, scarred, heroine who’s not afraid to lean on the hero but for some reason she mostly annoyed me. Kaz was pretty cute though. Now most of the crew of clones seems to be settling onto Risda III to open a bar. I’ve liked some of the Risda books so seeing some of the human farmer women with ex-space pirate clones could be a fun change 🤷🏼‍♀️ we’ll see.

If you've read one Ruby Dixon book, you've read them all. Ruthie was another clone and living on Straik's ship with his clone wife, Ruth, and another clone, Ruth Ann. Kazex is a red skinned a'ani clone. This is the worst case of insta love I've ever read. He literally told her he loved her immediately after he met her. Her insecurities (because that's what all Ruby Dixon plotlines are) were decision making, needing to be seen as an individual and not as a clone and worrying about hairy legs during sex. Kazex eventually gets her to come around. They decide to make Risda 3 their home. One of his clone brothers started a new cantina, Sunrise, for the human woman on the planet. They are staying with two more clone brothers to help him run it. I was listening at 1.50 speed and I couldn't even tell. There were STILL long pauses. The narrators were obviously trying to drag out the narration of this short book so they could get paid for more hours. The female narrator was alright. The male narrator sounded like a black guy who'd grown up in an all white neighborhood and gone to an all white school. In Salt Lake City, Utah. The whitest place on the planet. Not that there's anything wrong with that, but his female voices were so bad. HEA.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ - Sweet, Hilarious, and Full of Golden Retriever Vibes!

This book? Adorable, sweet, and flat-out hilarious. I swear, I laughed so hard at times that my dog gave me side-eye. Ruby does it again with a romance that’s equal parts heart and humor, and watching these two finally get their happily-ever-after was so worth it!

The hero? Major golden retriever energy. We’re talking loyal, lovable, and so patient you just want to hug him. Meanwhile, our heroine goes through some serious self-growth, and I loved watching her find her own strength along the way. The balance between her journey and the hero's sunshine-y charm just works.

If you love Ruby’s books, you’ll love this one. It’s got all the laughs, the sweet moments, and just the right amount of feels. Perfect for anyone looking to escape into a fun, feel-good romance that’ll leave you grinning.

The cover art is so much better, and I really hope Dixon sticks with this cartoonish design scheme instead of the horrible photo manipulations.

That being said, for me, this was one of the worst pairings of anything Dixon has written. Kazex and Ruthie had absolutely no chemistry, and it wasn't enjoyable to be in either of their heads.

Not a favorite by far, but the Sunrise Cantina storyline could offer some interesting new scenarios. Could. If more time is put into the writing. This one was sloppy.

1. He groans. “Good girl.”
Noooooo. Please kill me.
2. The most annoying main character.
3. Not much chemistry.
4. Boring. I was praying for it to be over.
5. Butt stuff (just a little, but still NO for me).
6. Totally needless story/novella. It’s like: Hmmm, I need to write something because my deadline is coming”. Really disappointing, ´cause I was curious about this new series from Ruby.
7. Meh.

Meh it wasn’t a bad book, but it wasn’t my favorite. The FMC has PTSD, anxiety and is going through an identity crisis because she is a clone. I love when Ruby tackles mental conditions in an alien setting, but this was a miss for me as I felt like this FMC really really needed therapy. Unlike the other FMC on Risda who have something going on, hide at their farms and don’t have an extensive support system that they can trust this FMC does. So it was frustrating that she doesn’t utilize it and no one encourages her to take baby steps for the better until almost the end of the book.

It made sense to me while they were in space, but it’s mentions that the ship has been docked for months on the human settlement and nobody thinks hmm I wonder if it’s somebody here who can help her. Instead she’s coddled and allowed to frequently modify her body via piercing to make herself feel better. It’s frustrating to read. I think I would have enjoyed this book so much more if part of the plot involved the FMC reaching out earlier on her own for help.

The MMC is a standard issue hopelessly in love Ruby cinnamon role. I really did like him. I felt bad reading the FMC continuously yo-yo him around, but I think her issues were bigger than the cute alien love story package this book came in.

I did like the direction this series is taking with all of the side characters from the Scarlett gaze. My three star rating is based more on the strength of liking the MMC and the stories to come in this series. Here’s to hoping the next one is a better read for me. 🤞

I love reading about the crew of the Scarlet Gaze ever since I read Straik.

We follow Kazex and Ruthie's story. The thing with the friends-to-lovers trope is that, it's not my favorite so I knew going in that I'm gonna either love it sm or I'm indifferent to it. Sadly, this is not the best Ruby Dixon book.

Honestly, I got really reallyyy frustrated with Ruthie. We saw glimpses of her throughout some of the books but when I read her POV, I didn't resonate with her. I read mixed reviews of this book so I had my expectations low.

Overall, it's not a bad book but it's not for me. It's easy to read, but it didn't catch my attention that I spent around 5 hrs reading this one.

I do look forward to this series and I will always read anything put out by Ruby.
