Nevada is in the Silverado Dominion as a favor for some friends in the Resistance. While they are visiting family, he is running their saloon and gathering information. Gem Verity is a gunfighter turned rancher who comes into the Dancing Keg occasionally to play poker. By reputation, Gem is a crack shot and the fastest draw anyone has ever seen. Nevada has an odd feeling about Gem and doesn't know if it has something to do with his Katerran heritage, or if it relates to his Resistance work for justice. When he meets Gem's sister, he knows the truth. Gem is important to him, because Emma is even more so.
Gem Verity is another captivating instalment in Layla Hawke’s Navigations series. This time, we find ourselves in the Silverado Dominion – a world shaped by the spirit and grit of the Old West. Here, Gem Verity, once a gunfighter, now owns a ranch, trying to carve out a life in a society that runs on outdated hierarchies. Nevada, a visitor from beyond the Dominion, arrives to gather intelligence for the resistance – a movement striving for equality and freedom across all Dominions. When Nevada crosses paths with Gem and Gem’s sister, the story takes a fascinating turn that I absolutely loved!
No spoilers here, but this story truly intrigued me. There’s a twist that adds both depth and suspense, peeling back new layers in the ongoing exploration of gender, power, and autonomy that defines the series. Layla Hawke’s storytelling once again balances thrilling plot with profound social reflection. Beneath the surface of this tense, frontier-style narrative runs a steady current of questions: Why are women denied agency? What drives men to maintain control? What happens when someone dares to defy the order imposed upon them? And, perhaps most chillingly, what might become of Earth if our own systems of power collapse under their own corruption? Layla Hawke’s writing as always is vivid, and rich with atmosphere and emotion, and again she has delivered, not only a gripping story, but a thought-provoking one. I can’t recommend Gem Verity – or the Navigations series as a whole – highly enough!
Well named an absolute gem of a book continuing a wonderful series. I thoroughly enjoyed this one and look forward to returning to Layla Hawke Navigation series very soon.
