I Ship My Rival x Me #1

I Ship My Rival x Me (The Comic / Manhua) Vol. 1

Rate this book
The full-color manhua (comic) adaptation of the hit danmei/Boys’ Love novel! A lighthearted romantic comedy about two rookie actors who learn they’re being shipped online.

Wei Yanzi and Gu Yiliang burst onto the acting scene together, igniting a rivalry fueled by their shared debut. But while Gu Yiliang dazzles with his acting prowess and idol-worthy looks, Wei Yanzi finds himself in the shadow with only his striking appearance to boast. Amid the barrage of online hate from Gu Yiliang’s fervent admirers, Wei Yanzi’s patience wears thin.

When Wei Yanzi stumbles upon an online community totally convinced there’s a romantic entanglement between the two actors, he is initially shocked but soon finds solace in their speculation as he immerses himself in their discussions.

Though their relationship is purely professional, Wei Yanzi can’t shake the growing sense that maybe the shippers are onto something. As he spends more time with Gu Yiliang, lines blur, and Wei Yanzi begins to wonder if there might, after all, be truth behind the fan-fueled fantasies!

This volume covers chapters 1- 20.

I devoured this in a day because it is fun, fast paced and hilarious. The artwork is also great.

I couldn't get enough of the insights in Wei Yanzi (MC) and Gu Yilang's (ML) minds.

Will this change you life? No
But would I recommend it to others anyway? Yes, because the humour is daft and it's very self aware.

Looking forward to the release of volume 2!

I Ship My Rival x Me was a really cute read. I loved the art-style and the meta humour. Based on this first volume, it's going to be a slow burn.

I need them to kiss immediately.

I am absolutely caught hook, line, and sinker with this one folks. Like, I have no idea what I was expecting, maybe something like Tsubame Koshiora's There's Fanfiction About Us? But whatever it was, I got everything I wanted and MORE.

I love Wei Yanzi. He is so cute and such a disaster with his accidentally said words and thought processes, and so very, very relatable. I love the dual depictions of fans and that Wei Yanzi's experiences are almost like a love note to shippers. I love the very real depiction of shipping, my god, I was almost in tears over how accurate it is. I love the humor!! I basically spent the whole volume laughing and/or smiling because it was just so funny and charming. And I ADORE Gu Yiling. He is SO cute. I love the chapters from his POV. I love how secretly sweet he is. I love how touched he is by Wei Yanzi's comments and thoughts and actions, and how he's always cared for him and is starting to care about him... more...

And I just love the two of them!!! Their interactions are so vibrant and fun and touching and my god I don't even do IRL shipping, but if I was in their universe, I would absolutely ship them. All the hints are there, their relationship is real.

God!!!! This was such a fun read. It's going to continue to be such a fun read. I am... probably the most excited to read this manhua out of all the others coming out in the next few months. God. My cheeks hurt from smiling. This was just so cute. I need to track down the novel stat.

This was sooo cute. And awkward, but only a little. It’s also a good insight into Chinese fan culture, fan wars and shipping.

Wei Yanzi is a pretty c-list idol who can’t really act, while Gu Yiliang, who was signed with the same agency at the same time, is a b-list with much better acting skills. For a reason that eludes Wei Yanzi, their fans have decided they are rivals, even though the two have barely met. Gu Yiliang’s fans are especially vicious about it, attacking Wei Yanzi online.

Upset with it all, Wei Yanzi stumbles on a fandom that is convinced the men are lovers. Relieved that there’s one corner in the world where people don’t hate him, Wei Yanzi gets swept away with the imaginary love story. Which makes things a bit awkward when the two end up on the same film set. Turns out, Gu Yiliang is really nice. Maybe too nice, as if he was feeding the shippers on purpose.

Meanwhile, it turns out Gu Yiliang is completely clueless about the rivalry and the romance. But it might be he’s falling for Wei Yanzi for real. Not that he understands what’s happening yet.

This was a fast-paced and fun start for the story, and a bit deeper than I expected. Gu Yiliang has trouble at home and while he doesn’t admit it, he will need Wei Yanzi in his corner. The ending is a bit of a cliffhanger, as Wei Yanzi blurts out one of the many things he says throughout the volume that may make the other man get the wrong impression of his feelings. Or is the exact right impression… I’ll definitely have to read more. Art was full colour and beautiful, and chibis were really cute.

I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.

The silliness is off the charts with this one, and it pairs beautifully with the romance that neither character is totally aware is happening...or at least, that neither of them wants to admit that they know is happening.

Fun & cute but way too fluffy for my taste, too sweet, and the plot so far is barely there, and what's there of this plot is rather generic. It's a one time read I wouldn't come back to, and I doubt I will continue with future volumes.

One of the books of all time, it definitely deserves it popularity.

It’s a wonderful work, that’s all I can say. It’s, if not flawless, free of flaw. Like nothing about it is bad per-say and it possesses very strong elements.

It’s premise is one of the more creative and fun ones I’ve seen, with the MC (Yanyan for the sake of this review), who is an idol, finding out about his fandom and how they, fitting of irl fandoms, coin Yuliang (ML) as their “rival”. This ends up leading to Yanyan finding a minority of people who ship them together. From this point Yanyan has like a revelation of biblical proportions that ends up with the 2 being in a situationship that develops over time ending with them being in a relationship relationship.

While the story mostly focuses on Yanyan and Yuliang, we often see a staggeringly realistic representation of modern fandoms and especially shipping fandoms. One of the larger elements is how Yanyan basically has a burner account within the larger Yanyan x Yuliang fandom. This gives us insight into celebrity shipping culture. For example, Yanyan’s account gets kicked out after they say something that doubts their ship, something that is awfully true in the real world. We can also see how they will read into the slightest details about anything, such as the fan meetup that spawns speculation and chaos from the two doing mundane things.

Of course this entire story is a highly romanticized view of RPF (real person fiction), and its portrayal of shipping culture is rather realistic, but it fails to capture the true extent of the possible toxicity online fandoms can have. However this is essentially a what if of RPFs and if they ended up being true, and in that sense the story is quite good. Like truly there is nothing negative I can say about the romance between Yanyan and Yuliang, some people might find gripes with the misunderstanding that lasts for like 70 chapters, but I for one don’t mind it. Like yes, it is a misunderstanding trope, but it hardly leans into it as a plot point instead being mostly for comedy a few times. I also see how some people could find the character development a bit obtuse and hard to find, to which I say… yeah it is, but this is why the few chapters if Yuliang’s Diary are included to give deeper insight into Yuliang’s thoughts.

Overall, is this some life hang in work that will help you realize the truth of the universe?
Lmao no.
Is this your average danmei you should read when you have nothing better to do?
Yeah, probably?
But is it a good series?
For sure.

This manhua is absolutely fascinating to me. I decided to try it on a whim, not having any experience with the novel it's based on, and it's incredibly adorable at its core, no doubt about that! But it's also a really interesting look at idol culture and Real Person Shipping and romance, and how these things intersect in this story.

We watch as Wei Yanzi gets pulled into and engrossed in online fandom that indulges in Real Person Shipping of him and his industry "rival", Gu Yilian, and seeks out the community that ships them as a sort of comfort and for connection as he indulges the illusory fantasy. Meanwhile, Gu Yilian seems to remain utterly oblivious to the shippers, the RPF and the implications of fanart of the two of them together, but appears to be gradually falling for Wei Yanzi himself. And of course, serendipitous misunderstandings and shenanigans ensue.

I'm glad I went in blind, because it is both a fun read and also an interesting one to think on and pick apart. I really enjoyed this first volume and I look forward to the rest!

This was so funny. I love Wei Yanzi, he is hilarious and so adorable. Wei Yanzi going down the shipper rabbit hole on social media was so fun. I loved his reactions to seeing the videos and fanfictions. I also really like Gu Yiliang (when he was in his everyday clothes and smoking 👀), I really enjoyed his diary entries.

The art is really good too, I love the fanart that is included at the end of every chapter.

I didn't realize this was based on a danmei, I'll definitely be adding it to my tbr.

One of them is naive, but they're both really cute and so far mostly green flags. It's a light-hearted read and the art is so beautiful. I especially love when the actors are in their hair and makeup for the drama film set.

A really great book with a fascinating premise and a really nice art style along with some really funny moments. Although what weighs this book down from being perfect for me was how often the main character was stuck in his own thoughts to the point the pacing would be slowed down a bit too much for me. But otherwise, would recommend for any new time BL reader!
