COLLECTING: Miles Morales: Spider-Man (2022) 17-20, Web of Spider-Man (2024) 1 (Miles Morales: Spider-Man story)
Miles Morales hits his 300th issue with a celebratory triple-sized issue and, much like the rest of Cody Ziglar’s run on the book, it’s… OK. I quite enjoyed this collection but I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t ready for a new creative team for Miles.
3.5 Stars. This Volume ties up all the loose ends from Gang War by giving us the final showdown with Rabble. Miles' new abilities are pushed to the limits and we lead right into the next crossover "Blood Hunt", which I'll be reading soon. Really feel like these events are building Miles up to something crazy, but not completely sure. Looking forward to him getting back to his own issues and not just crossovers.
Action is really phenomenal here though. Recommend.
I admit that I'm not the target audience for this new Miles Morales run, which is clearly aimed at a much younger age group. But that doesn't excuse everything, and it clearly doesn't excuse the dumbing down that Ziglar started right from the start.
A younger audience doesn't mean a dumber audience. It's not by writing with as much talent as an episode of Scooby Doo that future generations will become seasoned readers, seeking to rise in the rich world of comics. Well, rich is an overstatement here. Marvel has clearly decided that throwing shit in a can is the easy way to cash in.
One of my gripes about the Miles Morales comics of late has been that he’s often juggling SO many interactions with other characters that it never feels like anything totally pays off. The Starling and Shift stuff have been good, but most of the content with the Cape Killers just felt bleh. However, I wasn’t expecting all these threads to build together and culminate in a giant issue 18 that brought the Cape Killers and Rabble together to fight against Miles and a bunch of the folks he’s connected with since the beginning of Ziglar’s run. It really worked for me in a way few of these do, largely because I felt like I knew all these character and could track logically why they were involved and what they were doing. It also had some inspired moments in the art — the black and white scene and a few splash panels in this volume really stand out.
This volume of Miles Morales seems to be getting on track after wandering around a bit for the last few volumes thanks to Gang War and Carnage Reigns making things weird.
This feels like the culmination of the first phase of Cody Ziglar's story. We get some resolution to the Rabble story, Miles gets to battle his demons both within and without, and there's some fun to be had for his supporting cast too as they get in on the action along the way.
My complaint for the last few volumes is that Miles has felt like a side character in his own book, but that doesn't feel like the case here. Hopefully we're heading back to the quality of the first volume, and are tapping into the potential that this series definitely still has.
Well, he's made it through 'Gang War' in one piece...
What's next for Miles Morales? Finishing things with Rabble. Whereas Miles has gone to therapy and 'done the work', Rabble still blames Spider-Man for all her problems and wants blood. Her powers are still just as messed up as Miles', but she'll do whatever it takes to get to him.
That includes teaming up with Agent Gao and the Capekillers (and Rabble may still have a few tricks of her own to put into play) ------ Bonus: Shift is going to go all 'puppy dog' for Ms. Marvel. Calling it now... Bonus Bonus: Just call Miles, 'Lightning-SpiderDevil' with all these new powers n' stuff...
Things with Rabble finally come to a head with Miles's super friends in tow. I'm really glad the Cape Killers nonsense ends here. The artwork in this is a chaotic mess. It's so busy and chaotic I can't tell what's happening at times. Using speed lines instead of backgrounds also contributes to the confusion. Next up, yet another event. Ugh!
Brings to a close the Rabble and cape killer storylines, at least for now. Miles is remarkably empathetic towards Rabble in this volume, perhaps foolishly so. But it's a level of naiveté that's entirely believable from a kid like Miles.
Once again, I didn't read the other volumes in this arc, but this one was pretty good. Shift was adorable, and I loved his and Miss Marvel's friendship. Also, Billie is adorable.
