The Big Apple is under siege! As super villains and criminal gangs violently carve the city up like pie, it's Miles Morales' job to save all of Brooklyn from destruction! But between the Scorpion, the anti-super Cape Killers and the Hobgoblin making moves, there are too many fires for Miles to put out on his own. Maybe Ms. Marvel can lend a big hand? And when the Prowler enters the battlefield, whose side will he be on? When it comes down to it, Miles is on a collision course with the Hobgoblin - and if the maniacal villain's masterstroke comes off, he'll be the most powerful super villain in all of New York City! Plus: There's a traitor in Miles' midst, and a single act of betrayal could define the rest of Spider-Man's life! And Dylan Brock, A.K.A. Venom, has a bone…or a brain…to pick with Miles Morales, the young Spider-Man! And it's not the first time that Miles has had to survive an encounter with a Venom! Collecting MILES MORALES: SPIDER-MAN (2022) #13-16 and GIANT-SIZE SPIDER-MAN (2024) #1.
A slightly nicer arc than the previous ones but no cigar. The general tone of the series is too adolescent for my taste, we're treated to the return of Rabble, the lamest Marvel character of 2024 - no, I'm kidding, it's Jackpot. Or Spider Boy. Pick up your choice. Ziglar has an obsession with Agent Gao and his band of Cape Killers stooges. Gao has simply no existence apart from a giant chip on her shoulders about superheroes for an undisclosed reason I don’t care about anyway: a first-rate characterisation indeed. I don't understand the presence of Hobgoblin, who's been lurking around for 2 volumes now, for what? A future mumbo jumbo run with Queen Goblin? Oh fuck, I can't wait...
The drawing is mastered but ends up being too hysterical in the action scenes and loses its interest
This was hard to get into and not a compelling story. It's one of those comics that reads as if it's a bunch of kids playing make believe and then they hired artists and writers. It's all over the place and a lot of noise. I read it out of order because the gang war concept seemed really cool, but it was hard to get into any of the characters. The lightning sword thing seems like a dumb concept to start but also isn't implemented well in the story. The art is good and that's pretty much it.
Oops, never marked this as read back when this event came out. Don’t remember it being anything great and also remember it not having the best tie in factors to it. But still a decent read at least.
16 issues into Cody Ziglar's run on Miles and I'm beginning to realise why I'm not enjoying it as much as the last run. While Saladin Ahmed introduced new characters to Miles' life, like Billie, Selim, and Shift, they never felt like they were overshadowing things. This arc, like the Carnage Reigns tie-in, feels like we're focusing too much on the Cape Killers and forgetting about our main character. This'd almost be fine, if any of them were particularly interesting, but they're really not.
There's also only so many times we can retread the Uncle-Aaron-Is-Bad plotline - it's done, we know he's not, let's just let him, and us readers, move on.
I don't want to be entirely negative. When things focus in again, it's great - Miles' showdown with Rabble is superb, and is a typical Spider-Man type fight to the finish while everything explodes. The artwork's also excellent, Federico Vicentini's at the top of his game here, even when the panels are overloaded with characters.
Not that great, until it remembers that it's meant to be a book about Miles Morales. Then, it's awesome.
Miles' recent confrontation with the Hobgoblin dovetails nicely into the Gang War storyline as a contender for the throne of Brooklyn.
Except this volume is plagued by the nails-on-chalkboard confrontations with the "Cape Killers" (not actual killers) who have plagued Zigler's run and who got old really fast as they keep repeating the same 'ole, "Take Miles In" again and again, while pretty much not showing up in any other Manhattan comic. (It doesn't help that none of them are interesting at all, with the surprising exception of the Scorpion.)
And when we do get the conflict with the Hobgoblin, it's just page and page (issue after issue) of dull fighting.
The "Giant Size" encounter with Venom isn't much better. (Not really a giant-size story, as half of that book was taken up by a reprint of an old, actually good, Ultimate universe Miles story.)
Slightly above average tie-in in the 'Gang War' crossover...
From 'Giant Sized Spider-Man' #1, we have Miles on a stakeout for/with Misty Knight. They're checking out Rabble's team up with Hobgoblin....when Venom (with those Pitt style wrist 'chains') pops in vowing to be a 'Lethal Protector'. THAT all sets things up for Miles' Gang War story.
Hobgoblin's getting his gear upgraded by Rabble (and so do the Enforcers). Miles has Starling get his friends together (Shift, Ms. Marvel, Misty Knight and Colleen Wing) to keep Hobgoblin from grabbing any land in this gang war. === Bonus: New Prowler cameo AND OG Prowler appearance (now..Hornet??) FTW Bonus Bonus: Rabble is SO broken. Is this PTSD or something worse??
Glad that wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Nice to see Ms Marvel pop up here, just as I’m sure Miles is being deployed elsewhere. I can’t remember who Venom is currently — is it Eddie’s son? Real son? Also have no real knowledge on Hobgoblins current context, though that was offset a little by Rabble coming back to the mix. Felt like she wasn’t super duper crucial here given her exit, but that’s probably also the result of this main four issue run being part of a crossover event and these four issues featuring maybe 20-25 named characters of note. Not sure I’ll see what happens to round out this crossover event since I’m not really planning to grab other collections, but if I did I guess I’ll be looking for Amazing Spider-Man.
Really enjoyed Venom vs. Miles! This has a decent recap of what went on in Gang War so far related to Miles while giving it in an interesting lense that is neat to see Miles' perspective in. The story inside is insanely unfinished with wanting you to go get other Gang War volumes, which I will not be doing. Appreciate that this does a decent job of pocketing Miles story to keep you in the loop.
This volume does have the issue of fights that go on for awhile and are not particularly interesting. Happy to have some pretty big cameos of Miles' connections in this volume. But they dont feel written particularly well, except Scorpion who gets a lot of love.
The art does not let up in this one, all fantastic!
A mediocre tie-in to Gang War. The Gang War comes to Brooklyn when Hobgoblin and Rabble try and take over there. It's just nonstop fights for 4 issues. The art is so chaotic that I couldn't follow it some of the time. Sometimes simpler is better. Also, were any of these Giant-Size one shots any good? Everyone I've read is just a short cash grab and then a couple of reprints which didn't even get reprinted in the trade.
Hobgoblin continues trying to take out the younger Spider-man, as well as expand his territory in the gang war among New York's crime bosses. The Scorpion, Hightail, and the Cape Killers also show up to try to capture Spidey. Soon the Prowler enters the fray, but why is he trying to take his nephew out of action?
You'd think an entire Volume of fighting would be more exciting... This one didn't hit with me unfortunately. Basically an entire Volume of Miles fighting against Hobgoblin and crew during the "Gang War" crossover. Fantastic art makes this worthy of a read, but nothing too crazy here. Recommend with reservations.
I wasn’t super gripped with Miles’ conflict with Rabble because I am not following his book, so that’s on me. The story was good, not amazing. It has a good supporting cast, and I can stand this series being more juvenile because of Miles’ nature. Vicentini is a great artist, but sometimes the pages feel a bit cramped, and you can’t fully understand what’s going on.
Not terrible, but there's not really much here besides a pretty chaotic, extended battle. Not really a fan of Miles' new street lingo. The art is pretty good, but gets too busy at times.
Ziglar knows Miles very well, writes him excellently and Vicentini’s art was awesome. Not the most incredible story, but it fit very well with the bigger Gang War narrative.
