This is what manga is for! Thank you to NetGalley and Kodansha for the opportunity to read this one.

Tank Chair has been on my radar for a while - I saw the cover art and added it to my mental “check this out” list. The art style reminds me a lot of Q Hayashida, definitely some Dai Dark/Dorohedoro vibes.

Obviously violent with some really dynamic panelling. Fast paced, fun and some very unique character designs.

I will be checking out Volume 2!

[volumes 1-9, chapters 1-58] I wish this was paced a little better because a teenage assassin who uses a battle wheelchair is obviously very cool, and Manabu Yashiro incorporates disability into a fantasy setting similarly to series like Fullmetal Alchemist and Witch Hat Atelier. There’s a LOT of obvious inspiration from Dorohedoro and Chainsaw Man in both character designs, tone, and plot/world-building, but Tank Chair burns through its narrative so fast that it never quite lands its highs in the same ways, and often even immediately undermines them.

Idk. All my criticisms are honestly pretty Snobby. I do like how gender-balanced the cast is, and I think it’s fun that everyone’s driving force is basically that they……love their sibling?? I would definitely recommend this to someone looking specifically for a manga similar to Dorohedoro, and I started to enjoy it more around volume ~6, but I just don’t know how much I trust in a planned resolution for this series. It sometimes felt like skipping 70 volumes from the Naruto chunin exams straight to the ninja god stuff

Yeah, this was pretty fun. Tank Chair follows a superhuman assassin, despite being confined to a wheelchair. He has a sort of spidey sense that kicks into gear if he is in danger, and so with the help of his sister they seek an opponent capable of pushing our protagonist into battle and on to a point of recovery. It’s an interesting concept for fans of things like Chainsaw Man, Fist of the North Star, or just about anything in the wasteland sort of setting. I’m sure Tank Chair will be a popular series. Thanks to Kodansha and NetGalley for the chance to check this out early!

3.5/5.

So goofy and stupid that it’s kinda fun. It didn’t take itself too seriously, which was good. The art’s pretty good for the most part too. I think I just couldn’t see this going super far for me, since there’s not a whole lot to the plot. And I think ‘killing intent’ was repeated about a hundred times… it got annoying after the first half a dozen imo. Overall, a decently fun goofy ahh read with some cool art, but don’t expect this to blow you away or get super heartfelt.

A coworker was RAVING about this title, so I decided why not try it. AO PLEASANTLY SURPRISED! What a cool premise with pretty rad art. (Except the hands and feet and look prettttttty crazy at times). Overall, I really enjoyed this and look forward to reading more :)

Read the full review, and find more graphic novel reviews, at The Graphic Library.

In a dystopian-esque world full of deadly assassins and criminals, Shizuka is a seemingly pleasant young girl trying to get by and survive. Few know that she is the contact for one of the most fearsome assassins - her brother Nagi, who has been left paralyzed and comatose after a bullet became lodged in his brain during an attack against Shizuka. However, Nagi can sense someone’s murderous intent, even from long distances away, and he springs to action to defend himself or Shizuka and kill whoever is coming after them. Shizuka, in turn, designs increasingly more destructive wheel chairs to compliment Nagi’s needs to fit the jobs they’ve been hired to complete.

While the premise is absolutely absurd, this book is incredibly entertaining, and I’m already rooting for Nagi and wanting to see the ridiculous situations Shizuka seems to get him tangled into. There is a dark underworld the two are fighting to tear away from that we only get hints at towards the end of volume one, so I'm interested to learn more about their background and this other society. The illustrations are very different from other series -- characters' faces are a little basic until they need to have definition, like in intense fighting situations, but action sequences are very detailed and full of zoom lines and action.

Kodansha rates this for 16+, and this volume has violent situations and mild swearing that would lend to that rating.

Sara's Rating: 8/10

So, I found this pretty entertaining.

In the first volume, we’re introduced to “the most dangerous town in the universe”—Guicheng Island. All kinds of ne’er-do-wells call this place home, including siblings Shizuka and Nagi.

Elder brother Nagi used to be a top assassin prior to being shot in the head whilst protecting his younger sister, Shizuka. Now, Nagi is catatonic and confined to a wheelchair. But, Shizuka has discovered a way to “rehabilitate” her brother—by activating his murderous intent! Doing so momentarily brings him back to himself and allows him to be both the deadly assassin he was and the big brother she remembers. It’s temporary though. But, Shizuka is convinced that she just needs to find the foe that activates Nagi’s killer instinct to its max to bring him back for good. Thus, this pair embarks on a violent journey towards recovery.

It’s a truly wild and unhinged (and a tad silly) premise—but, it’s very fun.

Especially if you enjoy bloody, slasher series like Dorohedoro or Dai Dark and/or if you like a dark horse series like A-dou, I think you’d really vibe with this story. It’s kind of stupid—but in a good way?

This series is definitely one I’d categorize as “junk food”—not good for me but still very enjoyable and satisfying in the moment.

As far as how important and helpful this representation of a character who has a TBI and uses a mobility device is, I’m going to have to say the jury is out?

Nagi is in a wheelchair but his sister very plainly states in like the first chapter that her goal is to “cure” her brother—which, ostensibly, implies he will overcome the brain damage and no longer need a mobility device. I can imagine that may rub some readers the wrong way. Also, in case it isn’t obvious, this story isn’t trying to authentically depict the experiences of any folk with TBIs or wheelchair users. This chair is a tank—it’s a weapon. It’s sock. But, it’s only technically a wheelchair. It’s a wheelchair-shaped tank/weapon.

So, yeah.

I think the intentions are a little muddled, to say the least.

Anyway.

If you enjoy a gory, “blood and guts” story and you’re not super concerned about plot or other substantive things, I think you’d enjoy this. But, if that’s not your speed, this isn’t your tank~

I stumbled across this on the shelf at a local game store, and thought it looked cheesy enough to be worth the price of admission...I wasn't expecting it to actually be good.

Tank Chair survives by the Rule of Cool, and by having some really good art. Nothing in this world makes any sense. Genetically-modified super gorilla gang bosses? Snipers with telescoping chameleon eyes? Mind-altering octopus parasites? I have absolutely no idea what the rules are for this world, or how anything works, but for as bewildering as this ride is, it sure as hell is flashy and entertaining.

Nagi was quite a skilled assassin, until he took a bullet to the head, protecting his sister, Shizuka. He lived, but he's comatose and wheelchair-bound, and the only thing that can bring him back to lucidity is the murderous intent of someone directed at him. So Shizuka has taken it upon herself to put Nagi in the most dangerous situations she can, in hopes of finding a killing intent strong enough to permanently snap her brother out of his trauma. It's an absolutely bonkers concept elevated to sublime levels of ultraviolence and absurdity by the mutant freaks I alluded to in the previous paragraph.

The art is great, the action scenes are simultaneously absurd and creative, our heroes are fairly likable so far, and I guarantee you will never quite know what the story is going to throw at you next. As long as you're not expecting too coherent of a narrative, there is one hell of a good time to be found in Tank Chair. I'm reminded of the time I picked up Magical Girl Apocalypse on a whim, and ended up getting invested in that insane world and the characters within it. It's a little early to say for sure, but I have a feeling I might be in for a similar experience with Tank Chair.

Niekonwencjonalną metodą rehabilitacji jest angażowanie go w kolejne niebezpieczne zlecenia w których musi on wyeliminować groźnych przeciwników. W momencie kiedy wyczuwa on bowiem poważne zagrożenie przez krótki czas odzyskuje on zmysły i sieje zniszczenie na swoim nietypowym wózku inwalidzkim.

Każdy rozdział to więc nowa dawka akcji i szaleństwa.

Tank Chair

September 17 release

Volume 2 release December

Volume 3 release March 2025

Warning there is violence

It ended up being more interesting than I originally thought it would be. When I try to compare what it reminds me of, the closest thing I could think of is Dorohedoro (the art style). I am left with lots of questions after reading volume one, but so far the developments are moving along at a decent pace. One part I was surprised to see right at the beginning was a gorilla (not sure if there are other species or if someone genetically mutated), but in this world it seems like people can "improve" their bodies too. We learn bits and pieces of their backstory that seem like it will be relevant soon- like hiding from the Academy. Will be reading a bit more to see if it's a series I’ll continue.

Summary:
Nagi became unresponsive three years ago after he tried to save his sister-  the doctors are surprised he is even alive. Shizuka, his sister, is not giving up on getting her brother back to normal, even willing to go as far as accepting risky assignments for his “therapy”. She does whatever it takes to figure out the best way for him to stay responsive the longest. No matter what he has to feel murderous intent to awaken. Thus, Shuzuka will even threaten her own brother's life for his recovery.  As Nagi finishes out a hit, it seems he becomes unresponsive not long after but he still tries to talk to his sister as long as he can.

Thank you @netgalley and @kodanshamanga for the opportunity to read.

Nagi is an assassin in a comatose state and he is wheelchair bound. He took a bullet to protect his sister Shizuka who is doing everything to bring him back to awareness. She has discovered that the only way to do this, is for him to be faced with a threat, because when this happens he awakens.

She uses this to carry out assassinations in the hope that he may one day wake up, fight and stay awake. A dangerous plan for the dangerous recovery of a very dangerous man.

This is a great manga if you like fighting scenes, action manga and sci - fi. Good artwork with a fast paced story.

‘Tank Chair, Vol. 1’ by Manabu Yashiro is a manga about a catatonic assassin who wakes up when his sister finds violent jobs for him.

The story takes place in a dystopian setting, where mostly unresponsive Nagi and his partner Shizuka navigate a world filled with danger and intrigue. Every chapter brings a new, deadlier assassin along with new modifications to Nagi’s wheelchair. The first volume introduces the characters and the crazy world.

It’s a fast action packed read and the art style is dynamic and expressive. The story starts out bonkers and ramps up from there. I really enjoyed this over the top story.

I was very intrigued by the premise of this manga, even though it’s not the type I would generally read.

This is a very violent manga, so I would not recommend it if that’s not something you are okay with. The characters seem interesting from what we have seen so far, but this volume is mainly introducing them without too much backstory yet. I do really like the art style and liked the detail that went into the different models and features of his wheelchair.

It was interesting enough that I would probably consider reading the next volume and seeing what happens next.

Tank Chair vol 1 was a fantastic opening volume to a dystopian action manga that is, I believe, truly unique. With the foundation of what could be an epic story and journey and two wonderful if not a tad bizarre characters in Shizuka and Nagi this is one to watch. I loved the artwork and the panel layout and found there was a good ratio between text/speech, action and artwork. I most definitely will be collecting this series in physical format.

As always thank you to Netgalley and Kodansha Comics for the copy to review, my reviews are always honest and freely given.

Tank Chair by Manabu Yashiro is about a teenage assassin, Nagi, and his little sister, Shizuka. After a bad accident Nagi was left paralyzed and in a comatose like state, but when the intent to kill is targeted towards him he wakes up for a brief period and neutralizes the threat. With the help of his little sister Nagi goes out for "physical therapy" in hopes that it will bring Nagi back.
...
I rate this manga 3.5 out of 5 stars. It action packed with fight scenes around every corner. I really liked the style that this is written it, and the representation of Nagi with his disabilities. It shows that even thought you are disabled you can still be a hero. The style reminds me alot of Chainsaw man. If you enjoyed Chainsaw man, Full Metal Alchemist, and Dorohedoro then this manga is definitely for you.

This was a fantastic first volume. I adored the character design of the MMC and subsequent supporting characters. It is reminiscent of other Shonen titles however the wheelchair MMC, backstory and unique "transformations" is a welcome change. I'm very much looking forward to the second installment.

Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing an arc in exchange for an honest review.

Tank Chair is a bloody, adrenaline-pumping, violent adventure where a comatose assassin regains control only in deadly moments, forcing his sister to risk everything by putting him in danger to bring him back.

Tank Chair is an absolute blast. The premise is wild, the action is brutal, and the artwork practically leaps off the page. Can’t wait to see more crazy, creative characters in volume two!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Kodansha Comics for the advanced reader copy.

This reminded me of how over the top manga can be and I finished it on one sitting.
The consept of an assassin in a wheelchair is intressting and I will read the next volume when I get the chamce.
It is violent and bloody but I found humor in the consept and the last chapter give a solid direction for where it is going, even if I'm not invested in the characters yet I am curious of where it's going.

Very interesting concept but let’s face it, they can’t stretch this out, he ain’t gonna be bound to the wheel chair forever until the end, maybe he gets his full conscience back midway and he still uses the chair but if not this is probably less than 100 chapters, cool gore, the chair is fun, dynamic is interesting but the plot, this will drag if it stays too long

Yet another manga that I'd love to follow but there's no valid paid app to read on T^T It's a really fun action manga with an interesting concept. I liked the art, and the action was really fun with the different chairs the male MC used. Definitely recommend for people who like just fun slashy action shounen!
