The Bullets #2

Summer and Smoke

Rate this book
Summer Bright is just a name on a tombstone. A whispered mystery on the long-forgotten Woodbury Lane. Her ghost teases me with fear and perfection. She knows I’m not strong enough to do what I should’ve done years ago.

The Bullets are united once more, bonded by their demand for blood. There’s a vulnerability in their friendship, though.

Gavriel craves control.
Blaise fears losing me.
Ryker fights his guilt.
Callum’s moral compass will get us killed.

Chesterbrook may be where the old me died, but it’s also where I learned that hell isn’t a place, it’s a person. And if we aren’t careful, our plan for revenge could go up in smoke.

I was pretty disappointed in the first book, but after the reveal at the end, I was intrigued enough to pick up book two. Unfortunately, this book was as boring, if not more boring, than book one. Not a whole lot even happens in this book and I really could care less about the four guys. They were interesting, but there's really nothing that intriguing to them beyond the shell of the character they represent. Then, we have Summer who is extremely selfish and because the main character annoyed me and there was really no plot, I'm not at all interested in finishing this series. After such a cliffhanger of book one, you'd think this one would have tons of action and suspense. Nope.

Holy wow. I just finished reading this and I’m speechless. CoraLee June, I am in love with these characters and this dark and twisted romance they are walking through. The roller coaster ride this series is taking me on is perfect, has me hooked and is giving me all the feels. These characters are amazing and so real, gritty, and relatable. Sunshine is utterly fantastic and her growth throughout this series so far is something else.

CJ is as always amazingly talented but she has a knack for writing the sexy steamy scenes and navigating the bondage, BDSM, voyeurism and more with such ease. CJ is one of the very few writers that can write her characters in these situations and relationships in such a way that even someone that isn’t into the lifestyle or scene can understand. Gavriel does things or makes decisions for them all that he isn’t always comfortable with because it’s what’s best for Sunshine. (That IS what makes Gav, or anyone a great Dom.) Just like Nix does in his own way. In this book Nix gets to take charge a little, and as he helps Ryker and Sunshine explore their inner voyeur, the explanation, thoughts and feelings involved in the process make sense and help give understanding to the acts.

Anyway, my thoughts and feelings on this book and series are that it’s freakin awesome. Everything, from the characters to the storyline, the heat level, the intensity, and action, to the danger and the growth in the characters and their relationships. It’s extremely well written, sucks you in and keeps you there from the very start. The end is a sucker punch to the gut and then turns around and shocks the hell outta you. I HIGHLY recommend this series and very much look forward to reading what CJ has in store next!

Something’s missing … I think it might be chemistry.

Why. Why. Why. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, but I’m struggling so much with this one. I thought I was going to see a series through to the end …but that dream went out the window at 30%.

👇🏼Spoilers👇🏼

I think I put a lot of expectations on the start of the book, as the previous ended with a (non) surprising cliffhanger. However, the FMC wasn’t even in the first chapter and it leaned more into the mystery/action storyline than it did the characters.

Out of the 4 men, Gavril is still my favourite and that is really telling, as he hardly made an appearance. He was very possessive, but at least he had something defining about him. The rest of the men were just … beige.

I love a why choose, because you get to see how the FMC approaches different relationships. They all have different personality and make different choices, it keeps it interesting. The chemistry between the remaining 3 guys in the harem was just stale and I feel like if you take the spice out of it, there would honestly be no relationship left. Callum was less boring in this book, but there was still nothing special about him.

This is going to sound petty and a little stupid, but I hated the cover. I don’t like when they don’t keep the model consistent, because I’ve built up this image in my head and now you have gone and completely changed it 😂

Also this cover is the same cover as ‘Scars’ by Dana Isaly, which is weird. THE EXACT SAME. I didn’t know this was a thing. I recognised her, like a crazy person and then scrolled through my ‘read’ books before I found the cover. I mean Coralee had it first, but I didn’t know they could use the same image. The more you know, I guess.

Overall, Book 2 was not for me, but I still recommend book 1.

Oh. My. Word. This book is even more emotionally turbulent than Sunshine and Bullets.

Summer and Smoke is the highly anticipated sequel to Sunshine and Bullets. Featuring a story with a central female lead, Sunshine, with her four men, the Bullets, in the style of reverse harem. There is blood, happiness, romance, steam, and anger in this book. It is not for the light hearted, but is a seriously addictive read for those who like to dabble in the dark contemporary world.

We have extremely high highs, and extremely low lows. We have the push and pull between Sunshine and her Bullets (yes, all four of them). We have flashbacks of moments in the perspective of the Bullets to a pivotal moment in their lives involving Sunshine. We have an extremely intense ending that really leaves you wondering just what is to come (and I will admit, I had tears in my eyes even though I don't normally cry with books). I cannot wait to read what comes next in The Bullets Trilogy.

**I received a complimentary copy of this book from the author for review consideration**

Okay i was hoping this one would be better than the first book but it was not. I really liked the 4 hero’s of this book especially callum and graviel and tbh Summer really doesnt deserve any of them. They are just too good for her, she is so selfish and idk how she does that but she has the talent to make everything about her. She doesnt care about any of them, she just wants them all to be her for her and in most reverse harem books that i read, the girl really tries to be worthy of all, like there is a bond and stuff but Summer just ignores the other three if she is with one of them. The guys are just too good for her in my opinion. Through out the whole book she kept saying how she survived 5 years and it was getting frustrating, idk how she and the guys say that she is stronger than before cuz all she does is cry, throw tantrum if one of them doesnt want to fuck her and land her self if problems where she cant get out by herself. She is one of the most annoying heroine’s i ever read about.

1.5 stars are just for the guys, nothing really happens in this whole book. It kept dragging and in my last reveiw i said that i really dont see Callum belong with them and even now i think him being a bullet seems forced. Callum is so different from Graviel, yet they both have that leader vibe. Callum’s dark side was so unnecessary, that seemed forced because he is a good guy no matter what situation is. He doesnt belong with the bullets and summer and there is also no chemistry between the two. I only found chemistry between Summer and Gavriel.

However, there is a bond between the guys, they wanted Callum to be in their group especially Gavriel. I didnt think he would be the one who would want Callum to be a part of them the most, i really liked their relationship. The guys had more bond than Summer with each one of them. Even tho as i Say that Callum doesn’t belong with them, there is a friendship between the 4 than cant be ignored. Its just Callum cant be like the Bullets.

Summer on the other hand is literally so annoying and selfish. She really cant handle all of them, if she is with one then the other gets ignored. Tbh this whole reverse harem thing seemed forced since there is no chemistry between Summer and the guys except Gavriel. The other three are more like friends.

Okay so I'm here to rant about an extract I just read of Summer and Smoke, which the author posted on Facebook.

MY BLOOD IS BOILING.

In the extract Blaise, the 'hero' who was always the one with OW from the first book, HAS A WOMAN RUBBING HER NAKED BODY RIGHT OVER HIS GENITALS WHILE THE HEROINE WATCHES.

I admittedly don't know the context of this scene. The heroine says she is feeling jealous but does not tell Blaise to stop, so he does not stop. He will only stop if she TELLS HIM TO. It says that Blaise's eyes were looking at the naked woman's body 'with cautious interest.' Only cautious because he's okay with cheating on the heroine as long as the doormat heroine is okay with it!!

What's even worse is that the OW tells the h to pretend the OW isn't even there, and just 'focus on Blaise's expression of pleasure.' Ignore who is giving him this pleasure. WTF?!?! I could tolerate there being OW before Blaise and the heroine technically got together, but not AFTER. And in such an awful, blatant manner.

Let me start off by saying I loved this second book. I love the addition of Nix. He helps explain sunshine more. We learn more of her time away. I really enjoyed the flashbacks. I usually don’t enjoy that too much in books but it wasn’t over done and it was useful to understand the characters deeper. The fact that people were giving the author a hard time about certain things made me want to read it more. What’s a book without angst and wondering what’s going to happen. The fact that an author can create such emotion before a book is even released is a good thing not a bad thing. “You tell everyone that’ll listen. If you mess with sunshine, you mess with the bullets.” Favorite quote. Anytime your in a book slump, CJ’s books are the cure. 1- read this book 2- love this book 3- Recommend this book!

A 3.5 stars read.

I am conflicted about this one. I really enjoyed the first book in this series, it was interesting and different with a plot that I didn't see coming.

This book was just okay. I didn't love it and I didn't hate. Summer is a strange character. I don't know.

I will finish the series because I truly want to see how it ends.

Where to begin? This book gave me all the feels. It's extremely well written, gritty, raw and powerful. It picks up not too far after the last book left off, and we really get to immerse ourselves in the lives of these flawed but beautiful beings. CoraLee continues to develop these characters, turning them inside out and throwing them into all kinds of situations that test their limits and set them free. The characters are definitely put through the wringer in this book, and the readers right along side them, but it's a powerful, motivating, transcendent story of good triumphing over evil, of acceptance, of loss, of might vs right and of love, in all it's myriad forms.

Believe me when I say that this book only solidifies these characters as being PERFECT for each other, and their love only continues to grow and deepen throughout. This author is an insta-buy for me and this book more than exceeded expectations.

Um, wow. I don't think I've ever been so disappointed about a book before. I also believe I haven't rolled my eyes so many times because of such cheesy, cringe worthy scenes/sentences.

I'm going to try really hard to make this an actual review and not a rant.

Let's start with what I liked.

1) I love the cover. Definitely eye catching along with the title.
2) I loved Blaise, Gavriel and Ryker. Seeing these broken characters come together and how they formed this bond with one another left me wanting to see so much more of them. I wish we could have seen through their eyes more than what we got. Including Callum, I feel like these characters were the only ones who were thought out. Who had actual personalities, flaws and just human…where Summer….well I'll get to that later.

And that’s all. I can’t think of one other thing I even slightly liked. Before I get into the negative side of this review, I want to say that I had high hopes for this.

Things I disliked/hated/rolled my eyes at. Btw these are in no particular order.

1)Going to start off with Sunshine. I really wanted to like her in the first book and did to a point. However, this one did it for me. She has zero personality. She cries over every…damn…thing. And that’s it. All she does is cry. That’s it. Nothing else and the author expects me to believe that this girl survived on her own? I mean she does constantly remind us she is strong and survived five years on her own. I guess we’re supposed to take her word for it. I would try to if I could believe she could tie her own shoe laces. Like I said in my review for the first book, how could five men worship a woman who has nothing special about her? Who's only character trait is being a whiny bitch. I don’t think this girl can even think for herself. I mean.. I really excepted her to be a kick ass queen in this.

2) Hang on, I actually have a bit more to say about our darling Sunshine. I'm going to start with this,"All this time, I’d been so worried about Callum feeling accepted that I’d forgotten that I was an orphan too." This bitch so selfish. Every time Callum needs to grieve or just simply needs someone to listen...she makes it about her and reminds us that she has it harder than he does. I mean this girl felt the need to basically guilt trip for not calling her when he was going through something awful and really needed to be left alone.
And another thing that makes her selfish is running away. Not telling anybody what her father does. Yes, I know she was afraid and was warned that her father has killed other people that found out, however, these boys she claims to love live close to this killer. She knows he hates them and would kill them. Yet, she's just going to save her own life and risk her friends being killed? Knowing damn well they would be suspects in her disappearing. See, this makes it harder to believe she loves the Bullets. She didn't care that they could be her fathers next victims. No, she only thought of herself, which is the only thing she is good at.

3) Okay, just one more thing about Summer and then I'll shut up about her...maybe.
Even though I have pretty much dissed this bitch. And I would rather be one of her dad's victims than be one of her Bullets that she would probably trade in for a Starbucks....I still see so much potential in her. I still believe she could be a badass character who doesn't need one, let alone five, men protecting her. Hell, I think she could have taken on her dad by herself.

4) Damn...I have one more thing to say about Summer. I swear, I've never ranted about a fictional character or an actual human in my life this much . There is some scenes that bothered...well actually....really pissed me off. Here are the scenes.

a)“You are my home, Gav,” I said in a small voice as Blaise squeezed my hand. “But that penthouse doesn’t feel like you, it doesn’t feel like a space I can get comfortable in.”

b)Gavriel squinted at me before responding, “Do you not like my home, Love?” That was the problem. It was his space, not mine. There were no personal touches, and the constant revolving door of shady men that worked for Gavriel made me uneasy."

c)“I know there isn’t a safer place in the city than Gavriel’s penthouse, but I really don’t want to go up there,”

This girl is being hunted down by a VERY DANGEROUS man and Gav's penthouse is the safest place she can be in. However, bitch don't want to stay there because...she doesn't like how it looks? The bodyguards that she needs makes her feel uncomfortable. Since it wasn't hers it made it...less safe?? I'm sorry but if I was Gavrial I would be like, "Bitch do you want my protection or not? How f*cking spoiled can you be? You are being hunted down and I'm giving you the best."

Alright...onto something else.

5)Plot? What plot?

6) So, this book definitely falls under “Erotica.” However, I would file this under “Lazy failed erotica.” Every scene she has with these men almost feel the same. There’s nothing different or special. Over and Over is just the same sex scene just with different men. Too much sex scenes to be honest and not enough of everything else. I wouldn't mind so many if more stuff was happening between them.

7) Action. I expected so much more action in this. There was little to none. This whole book felt like a soap oprah and a cheesy low paid one. Too much petty drama.

8) "The three of us stayed there for a moment, and I was thankful for their support. The Bullets stuck together, I guess. And tonight? I was a Bullet." No honey....just no. You don't even come close to being a Bullet.

I have more negative notes on this but I'm going to stop here.

Um. Well...

I got to about 53% and there’s a part in there that truly made me realize why I don’t much like contemporary reverse harem. I adored the first book. It was sexy, heartbreaking at times, and compelling as hell. But I got to the point where Blaise admits that they don’t really care for the harem aspect of the relationship—that they pretty much endure it because of Sunshine. Any piece of her.

That’s not cool to me. At all. At least in paranormal reverse harems, it can all be explained away if they are marked to be with one girl...or mates. In this, the men aren’t truly 100% happy with the arrangement. It makes Summer seem very selfish. There were problems that I overlooked in the first book because I loved it so much.

That problem was Summer herself. She’s very needy and always needing validation. Yes, I realize you can sum up why she is the way she is. But after awhile, it’s pretty damn annoying. She’s annoying.

I can’t continue on.

(Read all 3 within Box Set)

"The Bullets are better together." "We're better with you Sunshine."

Scorching hot with a whole cast of swoon worthy men and fiery female right smack in the middle of them all. Each relationship unique but eventually melds into a hot as all get out RH that had me fanning myself, white-knuckling my kindle from all the action and suspense, not to mention the banter from other memorable characters that was a blast to read from start to finish!! I completely inhaled it after I one-clicked after reading the Prequel in Bully Me Anthology!! It was an absolute adventure from start to finish!!

"Alone, we were just a bunch of broken pieces, begging to feel whole. But this? This was nirvana. This was what it felt like to be perfect, finally."

Holy WOW, this book was fire! 🔥It has been a while since I read a book that kept my interest, but I literally could not put this book down. This book is the second to a series and continues to follow Sunshine as she develops confidence in herself and her relationships. I felt her pain as she conquered her own demons, and as a person who is not a crier, I totally cried with Sunshine. I just love her men too. 😍Between then, there’s something for everyone. Just bundle me up a little of all of them! Truly, I love Coralee June. Her brilliance as an author truly shines though. Her books never fail to captivate me, and they’re always very well written and developed. This one left me on the edge of my seat...that cliffhanger, though! I can’t wait to read the next one! Thank you for a beautifully written story!!! Crossing my fingers that the next comes soon!!!!

oh my bless, this book... ugh I can’t even put into words how much I loved it. In most RH books we see the guys making most of the sacrifices for their woman. In this book we get to see Sunshine do something she wouldn’t normally do for one if her men. I’ve never really been into dark or angsts reads until this series. I cannot wait to see what is in store next for Sunshine and her Bullets.

Woah! This book was amazing! I was on a roller coaster of emotions and I didn’t want to get off. I absolutely adore that Nix is so active in this book. There was scenes that made my heart absolutely clinch up but it was in such a good way. The characters all develop perfectly. I could not put this book down and I was on the edge of my seat the entire time! Holy cow! And that ending had me mind blown. I’ve never felt such strong emotion for a book and ending until this one. My heart actually hurt reading the last chapter but the epilogue fixed it! You can’t have a book where it all goes the way you want it. Sometimes it needs to have scary moments and moments you don’t agree with. But those moments are what brings the book together and makes it so good! Great job CoraLee June! You have seriously just wrote one of the best books I’ve ever read! You are such an amazing writer and I absolutely love this book!

For those who were concerned with a certain part with Nix, Summer, and Blaise, please give the book a chance because if you actually read it with the context you'll know that Sunshine is the only one for Blaise. There is NO CHEATING. All of the boys are faithfully in love with Sunshine.

Alright, this book wow! The character developments and absolute devotion to Sunshine was beautiful. There were things that came to light and we got to see the beauty but also the ugly situations the characters were put through. There were tears and love and more tears, I loved this book so much. The author made me feel so many emotions and I love all the boys but Gav WOW. His love and devotion to Sunshine was so intense, I was in awe with him throughout this book. I'm going back to re-read this book right now but here were some of my favorite quotes from Gav that I wanted to share!

“Why are you sorry? I built an empire. I built you a kingdom,” Gavriel said, his eyes wide as he grabbed my chin.
“But I never wanted a kingdom, Gav. I just wanted you. I just wanted all of you.”

“You hurt her again, and I’ll kill you, Mercer. I’ll kill you without a second thought. Cut you up into tiny pieces and feed you to the earth with a fucking smile on my face. I’m in charge here. You see her when I say you can, and only after you’ve earned it. I will always always do right by her. If you ever fuck up again, I won't hesitate to end you.”

Coralee writes with words dripping in emotion. I had so many tears with this one. I thought the worst had happened at the end and I was a crying mess....
1. The flashbacks were amazing and loved seeing how the bullets came to be.
2. I love the dynamics of all the characters.Gavriel, Ryker, & Blaise *chef's kiss*
3. Nix is so funny and I want him as my bestie.
I honestly don't know how I feel about Callum, something about him rubs me the wrong way. I don't trust him. 👿 so, I'll give 4.75 because of it.

I just came from reading the A Lovely Obsession: The Complete Debt of Passion Duet series, and Sunshine and her guys just aren't giving me the same level of addiction.
Lots of things come to a head, but some of this was a bit much. The scenes from the past were done well and spaced perfectly, just enough to give you what you need to know without losing interest. The pacing is good and fairly consistent, and I love the writing itself, but some of the behaviour from the love interests is disconnecting. And they don't really seem to have the chemistry I'd expect from people that are so obsessed with each other. It wasn't so much dark as just weird in places.
Big ending though.

This series is amazing from start to finish. June has a way of writing that absolutely compels you to become and stay invested in her characters. This book is an absolute emotional roller coaster in the best ways. It will rip your heart out and slowly remake you. Summer/Sunshine is a heroine not to be messed with. She is strong and confident but completely vulnerable and broken. The men she surrounds herself with are strong where she’s weak and she is absolutely 100% without question their world. But love is a fragile thing as much as it conquers it divides. Do not hesitate to read this series. It’s worth it all. 💜

I finally finished this one! Took me too long. Sadly not one of my favorites I definitely liked the first one. I just didn’t mesh well with the main character’s personality in this novel. She had her views of people and put them in categories in her mind and when they acted differently from that she would not like them anymore or have an issue with it. People are multidimensional and “Sunshine” had an issue with dealing with that.

Well, another 5 star book from CoraLee June. She writes reverse harem so well, that when I am reading a regular book with one guy and one girl, I almost feel like I am missing something. This 2nd book was just as amazing as the first.
SPOILERS:
Sunshine, Callum, Gavriel, Blaise & Ryker (& even Nix her sexy metrosexual hacker bestie) are all back together again and after Sunshine confides that she went on the run for 5 years because she stumbled upon her dads torture cabin he used when he was killing young men and animals, her dad found her there and threatened the guys and tried to kill her. So once she tells the guys this, they go back to the hometown she left behind. Her mother kills herself and then they find out that Sunshines dad killed Callums parents and it wasn't a car wreck. Her mother found out about her fsther being a serial killer and told Callums parents and they mysteriously died. Then finally towards the end they catch the dad in a church and kill him but not before her dad spills that the other mob guys have been working with him and have Gavriels sister. Then the church blows up and it left off with GAVRIEL DYING?! NOOO WAY.. Well of course I am listening to Love & Lead now but you wont know what happened til my next review MWHAHAHAHHAHAA. AMAZING FREAKING REVERSE HAREM SERIES CORALEE. A+ JOB!
