Home again on Ceann Mara station, Roisín O'Byrne, a steadfast lawyer committed to protecting the environment, finds herself embroiled in a battle to protect the threatened Darling River that her family have called home for almost two centuries. But her dedication pits her against formidable adversaries within the government body entrusted with safeguarding water resources, including her enigmatic boss, Seth Brodie. As her family continue in their quest to uncover the history of the settlement of Ceann Mara, and the hidden life of one of the first settlers, Samuel O’Byrne, Roisín delves deeper into the murky waters of corporate interests and governmental corruption. When an unexpected twist complicates her pursuit of environmental protection—her undeniable attraction to Seth Brodie, a man whose ideals clash with her own yet whose magnetism is undeniable—Roisin has to make a choice. Will she risk everything, including her happiness, to expose the truth and save the Darling River?

Lawyer Roisín O'Byrne was coming home to Ceann Mara station from Brisbane after quitting her job and ditching her boyfriend. Her parents were ecstatic to know she'd be home again, although with her new job, she'd be moving from place to place. Her new job saw her following up with landowners along the Darling River, reviewing their water licenses as well as working with the Government, as it was obvious some weren't doing the right thing. But along the way, Roisín became tangled up in criminal activity in a way that put her in serious danger...
Meanwhile, Roisín's father and sister Cat were deeply intrenched in the researching of family history around Ceann Mara. Almost two hundred years since the homestead had been built, and the original settlers from Ireland fascinated the O'Byrne family. Could they identify their ancestors with the information they had?
Over the River is #2 in the Daughters of the Darling series by Aussie author Annie Seaton and I loved it. Following on from Cat's story, Roisín's is intriguing, tension-filled and heart-in-mouth reading! I can't wait to read Erin's story when #3 is published early 2025. Highly recommended.
With thanks to the author for my ARC to read and review.
Another fabulous story in this fabulous series that I am loving, the settings are fabulous and the characters who make up the O’Byrne family are fast becoming friends, we met them in book one in which Cat had her story this time it is Roisin’s, a lawyer who has left her job in the city and taken another one that will help protect The Darling River. Being home at Ceann Mara station is just what she needs.
Roisin has a lot on her mind when she arrives home firstly discovering what her ex-boss and partner is really like and how her life had turned around since she took on the job at Henderson Lawyers, divorce lawyers to celebrities she is determined to make changes and help the person who opened her eyes to her partner, arriving home to an empty house is strange but she soon finds out that her father has had an accident and this adds to her worries.
A few days later she is in Wilcannia to meet up with her new boss Seth Brodie and one thing is for sure Roisin is determined that there will be no more work place romances but they hit it off from the start and both start investigating water usage from the river but what they find does not make them happy is there a link somehow to one of the stations along the river her ex-boss?
As the days go by Seth and Roisin are growing closer but danger is also growing and protecting the river is perhaps getting a little dangerous the more they uncover could Roisin be in real danger as Seth and she uncover a corrupt business and Roisin is determined to get the answers and the evidence not matter what. This is a fast paced story that had me turning the pages, I also thoroughly enjoyed going back in time as the O’Byrne family dig deeper into the past and take us back to the 1850’s searching out more answers about their ancestors particularly Samuel O’Byrne and Ceann Mara.
This is a great story and one that I highly recommend, I can’t wait to read more in this series.
Roisín O'Byrne is a lawyer she has left her job in Brisbane and controlling partner Greg Henderson and she’s decided never to mix romance and work again.
Roisín has a new role with Murray Darling Basin Authority at Wilcannia, she’s due to start in two days and her boss Seth Brodie seems very professional and they will be checking water use from the Darling River, for any discrepancies and illegal activity. Her family has lived on its banks for nearly two hundred years, at Ceann Mara Station, a couple of places they need to visit are very close to home.
The story has a dual timeline and goes between present time and Ireland during the famine or late 1840’s and easy to follow.
Roisín’s sister Catriona and father Tom are trying to uncover why his great-great-grandfather Samuel and his brother Thomas left County Kerry and does it have any connection to old letters found in an attic and donated to a museum?
Roisín and Seth investigate the corporate interest, possible corruption, illegal activity and suspected money laundering involved along the Darling River, they have no idea how dangerous it is and especially for Roisín.
I really enjoyed Over the River (Daughters of the Darling #2) by Annie Seaton, it covers important topics in the narrative such as water use, protecting a vital resource and the environment, medical episodes and how everyone should know how to do cardiopulmonary resuscitation, signs of coercive control and domestic abuse and the lengths perpetrators will go to and some men will never give up.
A fast paced and action pact family saga, I have just bought and downloaded the next book in the series By the Billabong and I'm addicted.
Five stars from me and Seth turns out to be a nice guy and I highly recommend.
Big thanks to Annie for sending us a copy to read and review. Much loved Aussie author Annie Seaton has just released book two in the Daughters of the Darling series. Over The River is Roisin’s story and we catch up with the previous characters including Cat and Logan from the first book. We also get the continuation of the past history mystery. Successful lawyer Roisin O’Bryne returns to the family property Ceann Mara Station. She starts a new job with boss Seth Brodie investigating water usage from the river. Escaping a tormenting ex and fleeing the city, Roisin is determined to make it in the country. But being attracted to her new boss was not on the agenda. Back at the farm, other members of the family are dealing with an accident and uncovering past history. I always know I’m going to get a delightful and interesting reading experience when I devour an Annie Seaton novel. Annie knows how to transfer the reader to a glorious destination and reward them with a special narrative. It makes it all the more satisfying when it’s an addition to another book. There’s action, adventure, drama, conundrum, secrets, romance and family dynamics. I look forward to getting my hands on book three.
This is the second Annie Seaton book I’ve read. She writes outback fiction, romantic and schmaltzy. I tackled this while away on holiday s and it was ideal.
This one has more interesting themes than the previous book of hers I read. Lawyer Roisín O'Byrne comes home to their outback NSW station from Brisbane after quitting her job and ditching her boyfriend. She’s found a new job following up with landowners along the Darling River, reviewing their water licences. Of course, there is a romantic interest for her at the new job.
A side plot is that other members of the family are researching the family history around the settlement of the station.
This takes on more substantial themes – coercive control, the abuse of water licences on the Darling River.
The only negative is the romantic schmaltz, with its advocating co-dependent relationships – “I’ll never let you out on your own again”. Otherwise, an interesting book.
I enjoyed this but not quite as much as the first Daughters of the Darling book but having said that the first one is one of the best books I've ever read so matching that would be rather difficult. It was great to catch up with the family and meet new additions to the clan. The time line with the Ireland link and the Colonial Australian tie up is very well written. We learn much of the family who have relocated to Australia or have been left behind in Ireland through letters. The letters give enough detail to keep the reader interested but wanting more. I enjoy Historical Fiction, well researched and written and Annie Seaton does this well. I'm now looking forward to the 3rd book in this series.
Again, we are in the wonderful outback family of five daughters leaving home (Ceann Mara Station) to pursue their dreams.
Book 2 is about Roisin, a lawyer living the city life with her boyfriend/boss who, over time, is a bit controlling. As she is approached by a strange woman and child, her world is turned upside down.
Seth is an environmentalist lawyer working his own practice when Roisin comes into his practice.
The story will continue back into the nineteenth century to learn the history of Ceann Mara Station and its decendants.
After reading this book, you will want to visit the Darling River NSW.
Cannot wait until book 3 📚💞

Another enthralling book, couldn’t put it down, but didn’t want it to end. So next time I am travelling to The Darling River, will have a little more knowledge.
