Escape
Without warning the electricity is gone, everywhere. Nothing works. There is no communication, no transportation, no fresh water or food deliveries. Suddenly government enforcers of the law are greatly outnumbered by the people who no longer obey them. And the people are armed.
John is a scientist. He is not a believer in religious teachings. He is not a fighter or a survivalist. He doesn't know how to help himself, let alone his family. Everywhere he turns there is danger. Even his neighbors are now fighting for food and water. His home is not safe anymore. All he can think of are his beautiful girls: Karrie, his young wife and Susan, his infant daughter. He despairs that he might not be able to keep them safe until help arrives, if it ever does. People are dying, lots of people. And no one has heard anything about what is going on, let alone what to do.
Jesse is a descendant of a prophet. His family has told the story for generations of the collapse of society. There are taught to be prepared, for not just their lives but their very souls will depend upon it. They have been preparing for a long time. Although Jesse is not really a believer in the prophecy he loves the lifestyle the preparation has given him. He is also not a fighter but he knows how to survive and get along without electricity.
Fate throws Jesse and John and family together. As the cities collapse and burn around them they make their way towards Jesse's home. As the world is destroyed around him Jesse agonizes over what awaits him. He too has a wife and a baby on way. He's been away too long and he doesn't know if he can return safely with a family he doesn't even know. He only knows he has to try. Perhaps the prophecy is true after all.
