The Icons came from the sky. They belong to an inhuman enemy. They ended our civilization, and they can kill us. Most of us. Dol, Ro, Tima, and Lucas are the four Icon Children, the only humans immune to the Icon's power to stop a human heart. Now that Los Angeles has been saved, things are more complicated - and not just because Dol has to choose between Lucas and Ro, the two great loves of her life. As she flees to a resistance outpost hidden beneath a mountain, Dol makes contact with a fifth Icon Child, if only through her visions. When Dol and the others escape to Southeast Asia in search of this missing child, Dol's dreams, feelings and fears collide in an epic showdown that will change more than just four lives - and stop one heart forever.

ABOUT ME:

Writing has gotten me in and out of trouble since I was 15 (back then, mostly just in trouble.) For 10 years, I designed &/or wrote for lots of video games, one of which was nominated for “Most Innovative Game Design,” but I lost to a rapping onion. If you know games you get why my two bad beagles are named Zelda and Kirby.

School: I spent more years in it than a person ever should, because let’s face it, reading books is so much better than having a job. I fell in love with American literature at Amherst and Yale, earned an MA in English from Stanford, and studied creative writing under the late great poet George MacBeth at the University of East Anglia, Norwich. I taught Intro to Film as a TA at Yale and Romantic Poetry as a TA at Stanford. Don’t tell the people at Yale but sometimes I taught the section before I’d seen the movie it was about...

I live in Santa Monica, CA, with my family, most of whom were enslaved into working with me in one form or another on my first YA book for Little, Brown. I’m not kidding; when my daughters wanted to go to school I said “Why are you so selfish? Get back in there and edit,” and by said I mean yelled and maybe threw things, it’s all a haze. Now the Beautiful series has wrapped, but you can see the movie on February 13, 2013 or read my new book ICONS on May 7th. Nothing gold can stay, Ponyboy.

Was that the end? Or is there another book? I couldn't quite figure it out cause some things ended and others weren't wrapped up. If there is another book I doubt I will read it because I don't really care about this story enough to devote more time to it. However I don't regret reading this. It was different and entertaining even though I felt lost half the time trying to figure out what was happening. If you like Sci-fi, dystopian, fantasy romance then at least take a look at this series.

Warning: Rageful rant ahead, may contain major spoilers

"But I don't.
I can't.
I can't stop myself and I don't want to.

You have to choose, I think, You have chosen, I think.
Choose Lucas.
Slowly, I pull the tie on my binding.
We've never finished this. And I want to be with him."

What are we talking about? You guessed it. A love triangle.

If that alone didn't make you want to gouge your eyes out trying reading four hundred pages of this shit. As you may have guessed, I have a lot to say.

Sit tight kids, this is gonna be a long ride.

So to start, the premise is that there are these kids called Icons that have special powers. The main character, Dol, is trying to start the revolution and rise up against these alien lords in a futuristic world.

Actually, scratch that. The premise is: there is a love triangle.

Who will Dol pick? The hotheaded and fiery Ro? Or Lucas, who has no personality? Newsflash: I DON'T CARE!

Every time Dol sat around having inner arguments with herself about who to chose, I wanted to throw this book at a wall. I couldn't since I was in a public place, so I just scribbled rage notes in my book and showed them to my friend, who was laughing her ass off at how stupid this sounded.

"A young girl in bright orange robes with a lightning shock of spiky white-blond hair, skin the color of wet sand, and icy green, almond shaped eyes..."

What the fuck?

When the last time you met someone with spiky white-blond hair or someone with 'skin the color of wet sand', much less someone with both? What would that even look like?

Can someone explain to me what is wrong with Margaret Stohl's publishers? Why would they publish this?

Why was everything in size 18 font? To make it longer? It just made it feel amateur to me.

Why was 20% of the book italicized? That bugged me so much.

Now the 'plot'.

I couldn't follow anything that was happening in this book. We jumped around too much, so I ended up skimming some parts that didn't make any sense.

I said in my review of the first book that maybe it had a good concept at first, but I take that back. This is completely cliche and unoriginal in every aspect.

The characters were the same. Dol annoyed me in so many ways and was one of the worst main characters I've ever read from. Ro and Lucas were stereotypical and didn't interest me in any way. And don't get me started on that robot that kept trying to be cute and clever and talking about technology. That was almost worse than the love triangle.

Hey, that just reminded me. You know what was worse than the love triangle? The writing!

The sentences are short and choppy. I feel like an 11 year old wrote this! The descriptions were really weird and there were cursing substitutes, one of my pet peeves (ie. brassholes).

Not to mention the ONE LINERS! Half this freaking book was one liners! If we took out the one liners and inner dialogues we would have a 100 page book.

And the ending. My god.

Margaret threw in all these plot twists, but they were completely predictable and I saw them coming a mile away and I was just skimming by that point.

So instead of Dol just choosing someone, one of the guys she was choosing between sacrifices himself for the group and dies. That's right. The author couldn't just have Dol choose. It would be easier to just kill one of them off.

As far as the ending went, I had no idea what was going on, but as much as it pains me to say, it looks like there could be a third...

"I'm not best friend to Furo Costas. Not anymore. He's dead, as dead as the Lord who took him.
I should know. My heart died with him.
Which also means I'm not girlfriend to Lucas Amare. Not anymore. I'm too broken for that."

You guys, that is a legit quote from the epilogue. I was laughing so hard at that.

Perfect set up for the next book. Here's how I'm sure it'll go: Dol mourns Ro while trying to save the world and repair her relationship with Lucas and then finds out that Ro isn't really dead and must resume choosing between the two boys who love her.

Okay, got my rage out. I don't usually hate on books, but this one was really, really bad. I don't hate the author, in fact I actually enjoyed some of her other books, but I've just gotta say, this series isn't worth your time.

Love triangles are messy, unoriginal, annoying, and unnecessary, in my opinion. Especially if the romance is weak to begin with like in the case of Dol, Ro, and Lucas. The romance was too weak and inconsistent for Dol to feel so much turmoil over it. Lucas and Dol kissed once every 50 pages, but other then that she was barely aware of his presence. Do you call that love? I don't. And Ro... Do was so sure that she only felt friendship for him in Icons, but now she has all these mushy gushy feelings spewing out of her since he confessed his love for her. Yeah, okay.
And please, don't with the whole "I'm too broken and emotional, so that means I can't have either of them!!" bullcrap. Just pick one and get it over with! Because no matter how "independent" you feel you have to be, Dol, you'll end up crawling back to one of them anyway, so spare me.

The action didn't balance out the bad romance for me either. Everything felt choppy and the story didn't really flow. And Fortis was completely predictable. And the fifth Icon child, Sparrow, I felt like she wasn't that big of a deal. She was made out to be this huge thing, and then they found out who she really was and then she disappeared. Ro was childish and grudgy, as usual. Lucas was just there for the romantic crap and contributed basically nothing the entire time. Dol was too sensitive and reminded me a lot of Bella Swan, which is not a good thing. And poor Tima was barely there. I wish she had a bigger part because I really like her character and think she has a lot of potential.

I honestly thought this was going to be so much better, but I'll still cling on to hope for the next book. Fingers crossed.

So I watch while my world spins out of control.
After destroying the Icon in The Hole (Los Angeles), Dol and her friends search out the other Icons so that they can destroy them and save the world from the Lords. But when Dol’s dreams about a little jade girl grow increasingly alarming, the group journeys all the way to the SEA colonies (Asia) to help her figure them out. This little girl could hold the key to freeing the world.

This book had very few parts that interested me and my attention. I was just waiting for this to end. The really great plot twist wasn’t until the end!
And I really could’ve lived without Dol rejecting her destiny and then accepting and then rejecting it. When the needs saved you can’t pull that crap.
This wasn’t terribly written but it wasn’t memorable either.

Great story, even if it was a bit light on character development. Very philosophical. The ending got a bit convoluted and the epilogue was out of context with the rest of the book - but overall it was a good ending to the duology. This ended up better than Icons by just a hair.

Therese Plummer did the narration and she was excellent.

I remember liking the first one of the series and though I liked the style in which this one is written it just didn't get me excited. I will finish the series as they are okay but overall they are just meh to me.

Review courtesy of All Things Urban Fantasy.

Whereas ICONS was a fast-paced, rush of a novel, IDOLS is a slow burn, with bits and pieces offered to the reader throughout until the big reveal (and cliffhanger) at the end. While not a bad thing, my expectation was for a higher level of action, and I was mildly disappointed at the resulting slowness. As the four Icon children, Dol, Ro, Lucas and Tima, take a long journey with Fortis, you get the feeling of waiting for things to happen to them, whereas previously, the four were the ones that made things happen around them.

Dol, our narrator, has a very unique voice, and I really enjoyed that about the book. It’s so honest and raw, and the way the reader knows everything she is thinking really adds to the tension that grows as they near the end of their journey. Once again, I also enjoyed the snippets in between chapters as they gave the reader a chance to know some backstory that Dol isn’t aware of. Sometimes, I was even more interested in the backstory – maybe someday there’ll be a prequel that explains all about how the aliens came to Earth and Fort and Doc’s story.

One frustrating bit was the love triangle between Dol and Ro and Lucas. When boys are involved, Dol seems naive and young, which is at odds with her marginally more assertive personality that shines through a few times. Though she is scared, she is also brave, but the boys seem to sap any personality and turn her into a wishy washy teenager.

All in all, there’s a lot to like about IDOLS. Even if my mind wandered a bit, the cliffhanger ending pulled me back into the series, and now I’m very much waiting for book three. Surprises abound in IDOLS, and it is fun to take the journey with the four Icon children and Fortis. I wouldn’t suggest picking this one up on its own, but if you’re already a fan of ICONS, IDOLS is a good next step in the series – a series I hope to see get even better!

This book was pretty bland for me. The way the book was written was just so...not engaging. The book is very plot focused which should be a really good thing but ends up leaving no room for the reader-character connection which is ironic considering what this series is about.

Like, everything is just always happening so fast and there are rarely moments where the characters ever have actual moments together and connect. Every now and then it seemed like the author was suddenly like "oh yeah I need to add romantic scenes now" and the would either make Dol focus on Lucas or on Ro for a moment before rushing the plot some more.

And goddamn that love triangle. It was nothing if not confusing, and was giving me horrible flashbacks to America Singer's indecisiveness from The Selection Trilogy. Like??? For one, Dol was all for Lucas in the beginning and only thought of Ro out of guilt for breaking his heart because he's her best friend, which makes sense right? But then just as quickly Ro naturally throws his 'I'm-the-anger-icon-so-i-can-set-things-on-fire-if-i-want' his sy fit and then Dol suddenly is like "oh wait I'm in love with Ro, not Lucas". And she literally went from saying "I choose Lucas" to thinking she and Ro were always meant to be together within the span of only a few pages.

I really can't stand Ro and is self-entitled attitude. I know it all comes with being the icon for anger but how does Dol find romantic feelings for him I dont even??? His little heroic moment at the end was, as he said, because he wanted Dol and ugh. I don't know.

Theres also the fact that there only seemed to be three icon children and not five four. Tima was only an afterthought during the entire book and yet this is supposed to be about the four icon children, not just Do, Lucas, and Ro and their drama..

Hmm.. I was not a fan of this book. I breezed through a lot of paragraphs and I felt like this book was just too wordy. This whole 400 page book could have been written in half of that and still have beenjust as good. And then to think that there is a third book or even fourth coming out? What will be the main goal of those books?

Book one, Icons, had a plot better than this. Icons kept me intrigued and interested. I felt like this was a shoddy book. I think Margaret rushed to finish this book which ended up having crappy sentences, incomplete ones and not enough of a plot. The end of the book is where the main action is. If I were you I'd just read the first hundred pages or so and then skip to the last 150 pages or even 100 pages and that is all that you will need to know from this book.

I guess the whole concept of finding a fifth Icon child is interesting but the journey just seems so long! The fact that everywhere they go, the No Face shows up, which makes sense and all but they keep killing everyone. Why is that? Yes, they are teenagers and yes they should know better than to endanger other people lives.

Too bad the first place they stopped at, The Idylls was destroyed because that could have been a good read but they were there two days and then gone. They are always moving around. I think just pick one major story or way of travel and stick with that.

So being honest it took me awhile to finish this book, almost two weeks, and it's not because it wasn't good, it just didn't keep my interest the entire time. I do enjoy the world of Icons and the overall idea behind it. There are a lot of interesting facts, but in Idols I feel like the story slowed down a lot and that when the book should've had a more steady pick up pace it didn't.

I did enjoy the story itself, the premise is enticing, and I felt like in this book we got to see a more emotional side of Dol, the other characters I felt like were more in the background when they should've been just as front and center as Dol was.

In the last fourth of the book things definitely did pick up which I liked, I felt like the engine was definitely kicking things up a notch, and that I felt like I could enjoy it more.

I will definitely read the next book because not only have I read this far into the story but I do really want to know what happens in the end with everyone of the characters.

There's an enormous twist at the end of this one that renders the rest of the book as well as its predecessor, Icons, completely irrelevant. It's almost as if Stohl had planned for a much longer series and had to cobble together a half-hearted finale on the fly. Idols is a hot mess of a book, rife with baffling character interactions, even worse world building, and action that builds to an expected conclusion and then suddenly ... doesn't. Margaret Stohl writes beautifully; I loved Tima and Dol and the motifs and ideas behind the Icons series were beautiful and moving. That said, this book in particular is a massive, nonsensical glut of words.

I liked this book as much as icons. It made me think about what is humanity and what we all do to survive. Dol is the essence of what it means to be human. The power of trust and the way it could lead us astray is told beautifully.

And now, a review.

I haven't connected to the characters any more than I have with the first book. Everyone was so inconsistent. Everyone felt flat. Everything revolved around one character, when it could've been a great chance to develop (and add depth) to the other Icon children to narrate the story from their POVs.

Maybe then they'd feel more vibrant and not just characters written to support Dol in everything she does. (They do that too much, TBH. Support her in everything she does.)

A good amount of the book is occupied by the thoughts of one Doloria Maria de la Cruz. It's mostly just her, thinking.

That's what caused the lack of action. The lack of interactions between her and everyone else. That's what I felt was lacking. That's why everyone else seemed... distant. They don't talk. Dol just *thinks* about them.

... In my mind, that made sense. I don't know if I expressed it properly.

Why introduce a team of potentially interesting (I mean, come on. Weeper. Lover. Rager. Freak. An amazing concept.) characters only to focus on the development of just one? A waste.

I seriously can't stress more about how two-dimensional everyone felt. ACK. Read for yourself and you'll get what I mean.

MOVING ON!

The ending. Rushed. Unconnected to lots of things.

It's like like everything built in the first book was unimportant. Like Icons was from a different series.

Lots of loose ends,
but I guess that's what happens when all the attention is on a single character. (Gods, I keep coming back to the *character rant*. Sorry!)

Some events stretched on, but they seemed unimportant to the plot. It was the rather important parts that felt rushed. They went by too quickly, without detail. I skimmed over big events like they were trivial— not really eliciting the effects they should have.

In terms of plot twist, there were really good ones. (At least I thought so.) So much questions to be drawn from them (and not much answered) but still, a nice addition.

Basically read this book for the love triangle. The most mind boggling love triangle of all because; how are you in love with your best friend you've known your whole life, and choose a boy you hardly know over him. And of course the love of your life sacrifices himself and gets killed because he's so sick of living because you made him feel like he would never be good enough, and suddenly you realize you actually did love him as much as you thought you did so now you can't be with this new boy- oh but the love of your life is dead.

I skimmed over this entire book because so much of the writing was unnecessary detail and emotion- which we had already experienced in the first book. The over all story line is decent, but the love triangle completely biffed it and I regret ever reading this book. I fell in love with Ro as a character, just to see him get taken for granted and die. Do yourselves a favor- only read the first book, make up your own ending. The ending isn't very satisfying either, just a threat from the main character i've grown to despise. It would've been better to have her die too and live in the afterlife with Ro.

Ugh... Did not like how this series ended... Other than that overall it was an okay series. Dol starts having dreams of a possible 5th Icon Child and wants to find her. The four of them and Fortis travel together to find this child, they don't know if they can trust him though, but he knows where he is going so they stick together. Dol has good reasons not to trust Fortis too. She finds the Book he took from her in book one in his jacket pocket when he said he didn't have it and she found lots of interesting information inside it. I still was kind of shocked a little bit at the end when you find out what Fortis was really planning this whole time. Bastard.. Anyways the love that Dol had for Lucas and Ro was so cute! But I have to say I like Lucas the best! And what Ro did at the end I kind of expected it. It just ended so flat... Wish there was a little bit more.

I'm still confused!!!

I mean this books gave a few answers but I still don't understand. Why did they come to earth. Are the alien? Another human life form.
What are the four are the alien? Human. I still have no idea.

And fortis what was his part. I know he created them and made contact with the aliens but there no answers as to why. Maybe there was but I was just confused.

I am saddened by Ro. I did not expect that. I actually cried for him.

I so badly wanted Ro and Dol together. They were end came.

I never liked Dol with Lucus always felt like he was using his power on her.

It was a good read I will day that but still have questions and sadly no 3rd boon for answers.

This is the Second book in the series of “Icons”. It is about these four kids Dol, Ro, Tima and Lucas who have superhuman powers. They were created in lab to be aliens slaves in order for the aliens to understand emotions. However throughout most of the books they believe they are the only ones that can stop the monster when in reality they are the ones the aliens want when they landed on earth killing billions years before. I likes the ideas and plot to this book but there was soooo much going on. So many twists and turns that got hard to follow but weren’t hard to see coming. Not a bad read but not my favorite either.

Meh.

Let me start with the following words:

Fuck you, Furo Costas. Fuck you! You got me to love you more than I did Buttons and then you go on and do this!

Now that that is over, I'd like to say that I still love the stupid idiot known as Ro, because he wasn't supposed to do the crap that he did. He was supposed to live long and happy.

And Dolores... man, I cant even hate her for how she reacted. I'd have done the same, tbh. BUT I NEED ANOTHER BOOK.

3 stars only because of the adventure and it kept me in suspense throughout. but awful, traitorous scheming. if the series had been told from any other perspective it could have been less dystopian society with children and powers and evil and more just the world is ending and these kids canake it better. disliked the negative ending and false hopes planted.

First book was better/ more interesting.
Defiantly expected a more bad ass ending...
This book had a lot of mystery, i feel like i still have questions and I've read it all.
The love triangle is pretty cheesy at times though...
And it was cool to see the alien's side of the story in some parts.
I did like this book and recommend it to readers who like scyfy and mystery.

3...Actually, if you take out the love triangles....which I usually can't get enough of...but this time it came across as forced and unnecessary, it would have been so much better...ALSO, how is that the end...there are still unanswered questions...I'm screaming on the inside...I hate cliff hangers left hanging...

I am not one to rate books lowly, I usually find entertainment in most of the books I read. I was just very disappointed in this second book - the conclusion to this Icons duet. I thought the first book was very interesting and set up this intriguing characters and background stories and it just all fell flat for me. A lot of suspense scenes that didn't feel like they lead up to much and the ending overall just didn't make sense.
