Perry returns to Franklin City to find his home under the control of a being of unimaginable power. To stop the mad god’s cruel games, Perry has to win …if he can even remember he’s playing.
And even as Perry struggles to save his city, an unstoppable force from the dawn of the age of capes grows in power, laying their plans to extinguish humanity from the face of the Earth.
Join Paradox as he walks the fine line between Madness and Sanity, Hero and Villain…
I could tell you that the author is a middle class, middle age white dude with a generic wife and a generic pet who lives somewhere vaguely rural...but aren't they all? F%$! that noise! There are Author Bios and then there's Mythos.
Welcome to the Mythos of Macronomicon.
Macronomicon is almost three years old now, hatched on the open-mic writing website Royal Road. The pen name burst from the cocoon of blissful ignorance and deposited his first humble contribution into the world of writing, tired and sticky, yet satisfied. Content in the knowledge his work would be warmly received by thousands of potential fans, and more importantly...friends.
The first comment was, "Can you, I don't know, make the main character less stupid?"
That was sobering.
Macronomicon has no actual weight, because he is a pen name, and while his existence is ephemeral, he does have a presence, often stalking the back-channels of Discord like a novelty vampire, waiting to suck nourishing creativity out of unfortunate* fans.
Macronomicon has a talent for brainstorming and stringing together disparate ideas into a cohesive story. That talent has been strengthened and built upon to form the foundation of his writing career. He once outlined the plot (quality notwithstanding) of an entire book from start to finish in a tiny room with nothing but Cheerios, beef jerky, Pepsi and B.O.**
If you wish to hunt for the elusive Macronomicon, you may find him at Royal Road, where he began, or Patreon, where he works*** at distilling new stories from a raw, chunky slurry of ideas.
*Or fortunate, depending on your point of view. The sucking is consensual. **Quality of B.O. also notwithstanding. *** Working is subjective.
I got dragged into this series after the first one. I was hoping the lot would get tighter and lead to some conclusions. It’s wings back and forth between young adult, ridiculous child like wish fulfillment and the author trying to pull a cohesive plot out of the dreck by changing the rules and just calling it magic.
Trying to tie in numerous, random story beats is very difficult. This does not succeed. The beginning is pointless. The middle is boring. The end is forced.
I *STRONGLY* recommend reading *at least* the last few chapters of book 1. This book jumps right into the action, and it’s a rough ride.
Magic and tech and superheroes and supervillains and…insanity. There are some many randomly wandering plot threads that still somehow connect back to the plot upside down, backwards, in the past, and tasting of…sunshine ice cream? Absolutely ridiculous.
And awesome.
I don’t know whether my mind can encompass more. But I’m willing to give it a try.
I love how every character has their own motives, throwing wrenches into each other's plans to the point where you can't be sure what works where. The story grows and evolves in a way that makes sense for this world, but would be nearly impossible for me to explain when someone asks what I'm reading. Can't wait for more!
I liked Book 1 plot lines better because they were more superheroes fighting crime and monsters book 2 had too many random sub plots even if the boss battles made the boring parts kinda worth it. The main characters spend the first 8 chapters stuck in gerome's D and D game world and forget they have superpowers. This would be fine if that plot had a tangable effect on the rest of the book but it doesn't really seem to other then the characters mentioning it as ph yeah that time a god trapped us as NPCs for game night. I mean Nat gets a cool powerset i guess but the implementation is odd. It's mostly used as a way to explain how Heather, Perry and Nat can co exist in a throuple relationship which is just weird... Also its out of character for Heather and Perry who fight over everything to be totally fine sharing a significant other. Like oh she's cute and has empathy powers so we'll share. what? also for some reason Perry spends several chapters side questing as a potato farmer, meh. The boss battles were good, we meet perry's cousins and learn more about his family fued so that could be interesting. also Chemestro gets more screen time and character development but i wanted more super fights and run ins with monsters. too much fluff plots.
Few are the books that can get a good laugh out of me, even fewer are those which can do it frequently over a 900+ page book. The author's absurd dead-pan humour is deployed effectively throughout this book, which ebbs and flows somewhat, but manages to keep you engaged. Or me, anyway.
Prodigious imagination produces these books, and if I have one complaint it is that I had to skim some of the spell descriptions as they got very involved. Actually I have two complaints, and the second is recurring antagonists (I can't use "villain" here, as some of the main characters are officially villains). Hopefully that doesn't get tedious; the author is quite willing to kill characters off, though it's quite hard to make it stick in some cases.
For now it manages to avoid being too clever for its own good (though it's close sometimes) and Perry has lots of challenges ahead to look forward to.
Innovative world with magic and superpowers coexisting and our MC is the first to combine them into one powerset. The supporting characters are engaging, the world is immersive and the plot is ntriguing.
My only complaint is the weird obsession the MC has about dying - specifically not being immortal and dying in an appropriate time. A weird concern for a teenager, especially one who reaches for power and knowledge when given the chance - no matter the cost. It also comes out in his weird obsession to determine his mother’s age and is mirrored in his grandfather’s carrying of a gun - for suicide in case he wants to go and his powerful son argues otherwise.
Barring that weird dissonance, it’s great and I’m lookin forward to the next.
I occasionally wonder what drugs the author is on to come up with this stuff, the first chapters is more a D&D filled addled nightmare, before it’s is resolved and we get back to a ‘more normal’ storyline. The prawns take a back seat as this becomes more a replicator based story, as the AI tries to replace all humans. Perry is levelling up and I hope he becomes more OP as he is nearly always sitting on 0HP during hectic battle sequences. This is a hard to put down book and I am somewhat looking forward to the next book so I can continue to ask myself WTF is the author thinking…..lol
Never mind that the author writes on a professional level. Never mind they have a firm grasp of the nuances of their art. Never mind every book I've read by them to date has been thoroughly engaging, riveting my attention with solid characterization, excellent worldbuilding, and fantastic humor.
Macronomicon has perfectly inserted an appropriate Monarch quote, from The Venture Bros., season 2, episode 8, "Fallen Arches".
Good luck trying to keep up with all the characters and their multiple names. There is no appendix listing a cast of characters so you better have a good memory. It might be okay if you only read one book a year, but if you are somebody who reads dozens of books then good luck keeping track between publications. This book also starts out in some mind controlled dream scenario which left me completely lost as I didn't know what was going in and thought that I had skipped over book#2 and gotten into book#3.
Great cover... although Heather looks like she's in her mid to late thirties instead of being 19. Dunno if it's her face or her hair. Wish the artist showed Natalie instead of her being off to the side like that.
Now... I love independent Natalie! Perry's growing power is badass and I wish he and Heather got along better. As in Natalie and Perry, and Natalie and Heather better! Anyhow, still loving the quirkiness of this author's writing and I can't wait to read more.

An absolutely wonderful sequel to the first book. Following these kids find their way thru the trial of a world gone mad with capes and cowls, monsters and mad gods, you will enjoy it from start to finish. Never say any plan is to crazy not to try. Can not wait for more. Just so much fun from start to finish.
Much like the first installment this book reads like ordered chaos, but in the best way. I enjoyed the relatively unpredictable plot and watching the MC come into his own. There is still a massive cliff hanger on what Brendon is and what makes him so ‘special’. Regardless, this is slowly becoming one of my favorite stories, it’s just a really fun read!
Very good sequel, but the first book was so long ago that it took me quite a bit of time to recollect what was going on and making sense of it again. A recap at the beginning might be good. Plus some things are boring: who is interested in weird name spell ingredients?
The 1st instalment laid a good foundation without moving too slowly. The 2nd book shows rapid growth, but manages it quite well, so you feel the progression and the effort it takes to improve. An excellent blend of the technology and magic genres. Well written.
awesome action, hilarious comedy and more mysteries to come
I honestly can say this book took me for a ride with all the action and arcs Perry and the gang did this book and I hope we do get at least an arc of Perry recovering a city on Manita
These books are a constant surprise with how the story plays out against expectations. My only real complaint comes from the pages and pages of spell choice that are just a bit too long and drag you out of the story. Still an excellent read
An absolute thrill from the beginning until the end. If that wasn't enough it also had me laughing literally out loud while I was reading it during my daily walks. I'm sure I looked like a loon.
I just finished this sequel. And really liked it. The main character is funny and interesting. The side characters are excellent. The plot really solid world building and storytelling. Just a really good time. Can’t recommend this book more.
First few chapters of this one are confusing, even if you have just read the previous book. After that first arc (which does have implications for later arcs, so you can’t just skip it) we are back in business with Perry & co.
It's more of the same stuff. Random actions and attempts at humor. If you liked book 1, give it a try. If not, this wont change your mind. If you (like me) were on the fence after book 1, feel free to give this one a skip (or not).
Couldnt find it in myself to put it down. Fast paced, witty, clever, all the hallmarks of a great book and series. Somethings a little replicated from other series, but served as a hallmark rather than a detractor. Can't wait to read the next one!
I read this a long time ago when it was up on Royalroad. I checked it isn't up anymore, which explains why I stopped seeing any new chapters. Decent read for killing a few days. Wasn't my favorite of the series.
Maybe I will try to read the entire series back to back if it's ever finished. Having said that, the plot is too loose and random to follow and I didn't find myself enjoying it enough to justify the effort.
Still great, still missing relationship fleshing out, the fmc's are kind of fading into the background at times, anyone expecting a tight, clear narrative is expecting the wrong thing from a web serial. You can see here this isn't ending anything soon...
This book picks up where the last book left off and owerri much goes into high gear from there. Definitely did not anticipate the trajectory of this plot, which made the ride when more fun 😅 looking forward to the next book!
