Monster Between the Sheets

Knot Running From Fate

Rate this book
JACE
In the years since everything changed in Screaming Woods, including myself, the only place I’ve found solace is in the woods I protect as a park ranger. I’m not sure how to deal with my new…attributes as a wolfman. What if I go feral? What if I can’t control the monster I was made into?

Every year this goes on, I retreat farther from humanity and closer to the animal I’ve become. I don’t get close to anyone, which is for the best. I’m destined to be alone now; at least that’s what I assumed. Until I meet Dakota.

Dakota moves to town to open a gourmet pet treat business, but I know there is more to the story. I didn’t know I had a future beyond being a monster. Fate has given me something else—her, my mate. Now I’ll do anything to keep her safe and make her mine, even accept the monster I’ve become.

DAKOTA
When looking for a place to open a brick-and-mortar store for the business I run with my best friend, I wanted to take the opportunity to move far away. My ex is obsessed with me and not in a dark romance kind of way, more in a creepy, scary, restraining order kind of way. Something was calling me to Screaming Woods, so I took a chance.

Opening Paws Up is going well. The town is welcoming and a little odd. Just the way I like things. I’ll be able to build a new, safe life here. I’ll be able to stay out of trouble and focus on the business.

Then Jace growls his way into my life. He’s a wolfman who loves nature and takes offense to my business, though I can’t understand why. It’s not like I’d suggest he try my treats…unless he wanted to. I have a lot to learn about Screaming Woods and the monster whose fate is entwined with mine. Hopefully my past won’t come back to haunt me and try and take it all away from me. Even if it does, I’m knot running from fate.

*18+ If you like alpha heroes and an insta-love story that is sweet and spicy but isn’t necessarily simple, then this is for you. No cheating with a guaranteed HEA. It is a standalone but is loosely related to my Denver Family series (Banks Ink., Suburban Outcasts and Higgins Security). Meet Dakota in Double Dog Dare (Lassoed in Love Series).*

Twelve of your favorite authors are heading to Screamer Woods, where the monsters mash with their human soulmates. These monsters are tired of hiding in the shadows and ready to fall in love. Go into the woods and meet your new book boyfriend, he might have scales, claws, or fangs, but he’s 100% irresistible.

**2.2/5 stars**

This series has the same premise for every novella. After a dreadful Halloween night, the people who drank a special punch started morphing into monsters and they now all live in a little town called Screaming Woods.

I wasn't very impressed by this novella. The little things that I did like were overshadowed by the inconsistencies regarding the characters. On that dreadful night, Jace became a wolfman who decided to seclude himself from the other townies, preferring the forrest who called his feral self. On the other side, we have Dakota, a young woman running away from her abusive ex. When Jace catches her scent, he instantly knows that this attraction he's feeling isn't ordinary, but does he deserve such a beautiful being?

Now it's all cute until it doesn't make sense. Jace, even in his human years, was never close to any woman. A voice in his head sort of whispered to him to wait, and so he did, until it was clear to him that he'd been waiting all this time for Dakota. While knowing that, we already can tell he was waiting for his soulmate/mate even before transforming. He was territorial, protective and a bit of a stalker when it came to Dakota.

When I’m at the point where the woods are becoming more town than forest, the scent of home floats to me and I slam on the brakes. I didn’t know what home smells like until right now. It’s blueberry muffins baking and fresh squeezed orange juice in a glass. It reminds me of mornings with my family and lazy days.-Jace

What I don't really understand with Dakota is how she never felt the need to wait for someone. She was intimate with her past partners, thinking that it was how it was supposed to be but never questioned anything. So it's fair to assume that she wasn't necessarily waiting for someone, like Jace was even in his human years. So we can assume she is just a normal human being. What doesn't make sense and what is inconsistent to me is the reaction Dakota has to Jace's presence. If you've read omegaverse stories, you sort of know the dynamic between an 'alpha' and his 'omega', and that dynamic was very similar here. She started acting like an omega in heat, not able to think properly, just wanting to mate with him. Where does this attitude even come from? If she was meant to be with him, wouldn't she had waited just like him? Or atleast known she was meant for someone else? Jace acted like a wolfman in heat, who wanted to claim her, which is alright...but her acting like a wolfgirl in heat was the inconsistency here. Because she is human AND never even felt the pull to him before meeting him, like Jace. Do I make any sense? Am I being too knitpicky? It just kept bugging me while reading this story. I just thought the dynamic was off.

Part of me is mortified and another part of me wants to preen and then present my ass to him so he can fuck me from behind like a wild animal.-Dakota

“Why do I want to bury my face in your chest and neck so I can smell you better and be soothed by you? Will you growl for me? I need it, which doesn’t make any damn sense and is starting to freak me out.”-Dakota

I kind of liked the beginning of the story when Jace was stalking her and observing her from a distance, and where she felt someone watching her. I think I would've preferred her to keep acting more like the human that she is. I mean, was she the one who drank that monster punch or what? No, the 'abnormal' one was Jace, and the abnormalities should only makes sense coming from him. OR keep the same energy with that feeling of waiting for someone for both characters, not have it be one sided.

Also, I couldn't help but feel like the story was dragging. I was ready for it to be over after he'd claimed her. The rest of the story felt like a promotion for Ember Davis's other novella Double Dog Dare, a ménage story. Dakota mentioned way too much her bestfriend Hadley and her two men. It's okay to have crossover (side)characters and promote your other work, but they shouldn't take all the pages space who are meant for the main characters. To me it just felt like a forced plug the author tried to shove down my throat. ''My bestfriend HADLEY, has two men'', ''Hadley found love with two men'', ''Hadley is supposed to visit me in a week'', ''I look at Hadley and her men are around her, maybe she needs some private time with them'', ''Hadley, Hadley, her men, Hadley...'', ''When I look over, I see Luke has Hadley in his arms as Brock steps up to her back, sandwiching my bestfriend between them. I can see the heat in the eyes of the men......I DON'T CARE. Like come on. Focus on Jace and Dakota.

Would I recommend this novella? I think this is an acquired taste. I normally like omegaverse stuff but this was very oddly written. I didn't personally enjoy it but some people might.

I liked the writing, and the characters were fun. Nice to finally meet the one that turned them all into monsters. The romance felt forced. Wasn't a fan of the soulmate forced pull. The biting and knotting were questionable. I've read too many omegaverse to the point its normal, so my own bias on their ignorance. I liked the town coming together to protect Dakota. Deals with an abuse ex.

Fun steamy short monster romance, very knotty 😉

My main issue...
While this series is a collaboration of different authors, the author of this book kept referencing characters from another book she wrote in a separate series. Which yes makes me want to hunt down that book and read it also, so good job author 👏, but it was extremely distracting while reading this story.

For anyone else who reads this story and is curious about the book, the author kept referring to, its Double Dog Dare in the Lassoed in Love series.

I don't like that he acts like a jerk to her when he's been waiting for his soulmate his whole life. And when he meets her, he's a total douche canoe.

- Wolfman, not a werewolf or a shifter, it's just weird
- Grumpy/sunshine
- Virgin MMC
- Stalking
- Soulmates

- Knotting
- Breeding
- A brief bit of primal

Twenty years ago in Screaming Woods, a mishap with the punch at the town Halloween party caused a good number of residents to turn into various types of monsters. All books in this series deal with the aftermath of that event and thus have similar vibes/tropes. Jace was turned intoa wolfman, think like old Universal monsters but still a human face. He is a park ranger and he constantly battles with the "feral" side of him that wants to give into all the monster instincts. Dakota has just moved to Screaming Woods to open a pet treat shop she runs with her best friend. The two of them are drawing together in a way that screams soulmates.

This one is different. Jace felt the need to wait for the right girl long before he was a monster, there was always a little voice in the back of his head telling him to wait so he did. After he became a monster, he realized it would never happen. Or at least until he smelled Dakota for the first time. He knew she was his. Dakota felt the pull from the first time she set eyes on Jace, in a way she couldn't explain. She doesn't want another relationship though, she just ran away from an abusive man and she needs time to put herself back together.

Dakota is directly tied to another one of Ember's books; Double Dog Dare, so if you plan on reading that book...read it first because this one spoils it since the characters turn up in the end of this one.

Most of my issues with this book cleared themselves up as I read more into it. Jace had always felt the need to wait but Dakota hadn't because she's human. But she explains that she had dated and stuff because she thought its was something she was supposed to do versus what she wanted. She felt like she was broken. She also quickly turns into wanting to present herself like in an omegaverse but whatever.

The end is incredibly satisfying and completely saved this book for me.

The wolfman and the lady looking to find a place for her new business are up and WOLFMAN! I do enjoy the wolfmen!

Anywho. Jace and Dakota. He's still working on coming to terms with what he's become. Considering twenty years have passed since that fateful Halloween night, Jace is carrying a lot of baggage. BUT...he does start to realize that maybe he's exactly where he needs to be in the form that can best protect Dakota. It just takes a lot of time and a sassy human woman who's a little skittish to reach that point.

As for Dakota, she's working on setting up her storefront, she's kinda taken with the growly wolfman hanging around, and she just might have an ex who is bad, bad news. Fortunately for her, Jace is ALL ABOUT keeping her safe, so that bad, bad ex isn't as big a deal as he might have been.

Here's to more monsters finding love in all the right places in Screaming Woods!

The first 20-30% was both MC’s inner monologue’s about their lives and then they meet twice for all of 5 mins before he goes to her house and says some weird poetic shit like “ur my mate” and she’s like yeah I feel the tingles too and then she takes his virginity.

Oh and then obviously her abusive, controlling ex comes to town to try and kidnap her but her big bad wolf gets there ✨just in time✨ to save the day.

Idk man. 1 good book out of 4 so far is bad odds for this series. Half of them feel like fever dreams and I’m basically reading them out of spite and malice at this point.

Book dragged.. I ended up skimming to finish. I didn’t read the epilogue cause I wasn’t invested in either main character. I hated Dakota, Jace was okay.

This is an OK paranormal romance, but I did have a few issues with it. It gets 2.5 stars from me, rounded up to 3 stars.

First, it was too short to have as much character development as I like. I would have liked a little more backstory on both Jace and Dakota.

Second, I had a bit of a problem with the couple's age difference. If I understood the story, Jace was around 50, and Dakota was really young? That is a bit creepy, in my opinion. I did get that Jace aged slower because of what had happened to him, but he was still a lot older than Dakota.

Finally, I really felt like the couple was more in lust than in love. They were definitely in lust, but they just didn't have enough in common to be in love so quickly. It made sense that Jace would fall for Dakota, since the wolf part of him knew she was his fated mate, but it still seemed like their relationship was mostly about lust.

It also bothered me a little that Dakota's abusive ex was able to find and hurt her before Jace saved her. I would also have liked to know what the rest of the townspeople did with him, after Jace stopped beating him up.

My rating system is below.
1 star -- Hated it, or did not finish. I usually only give this rating if some of the content is truly objectionable to me, like if one of the main characters does something really awful, and gets away with it.
2 stars -- Didn't like it. This rating usually means that I thought the writing wasn't very good, the editing was terrible, I didn't like the characters, or it had other major flaws.
3 stars -- I liked it, but had some minor issues with it. This rating means that there were minor editing issues, the story needed more character development, it was just too unrealistic, or had some other fairly minor issue. The majority of books I read get this rating – I do not consider it a bad rating.
4 stars -- I liked it a lot. This is a high rating for me, and I rarely give a higher one.
5 stars -- I loved it, and will probably read it again. Very few books are good enough to get this rating from me. The ones that do are usually classics.

Jace (mmc, monster)

Twenty years ago, the town had a Halloween party that changed everyone's life. Some turned into literal monsters, and others were filled with dark magic. Jace became a wolfman. He hasn't accepted it yet. But things take another drastic turn when Dakota's scent comes his way. She's running from her past. When it catches up to her, will Jace be able to save her?

Monsters falling in love with humans is the basis of this series. It appears that most characters will be either v-card holders or have been celibate for several years. So far, it's been meet and fall into bed very soon after. Typical insta-love timeline, but it works well with this series. This one was more intense, but I love all books by this author.

A love that's all consuming, life altering

I have typed several beginnings to this review and u just can't seem to come up with a good beginning. I don't have a quick, witty, tagline like I always do for Embers books and thst makes me sad.
I've spoken to Ember before and she loves, LOVES, omegaverse and I feel this was her way of paving her contemporary into a pnr world. (I could be wrong) but with the knotting, yeah definitely. 😛

I did love this story. Ember is always able to pull off the instalove in a way that's just right. Not too long, not too short. Just a good amount of details. She always brings up the family and keeps it interconnected with the rest of her series.

Jace and Dakota are a match made by fate. We will never know if they would have gotten together if Jace never drank the potion but, he did and their love was consuming, life altering. Dakota deserved someone to worship at her feet after her past and Jace needed someone who loves unconditionally. They compliment each other.

not a typical warewolf story

He is not the OTT alpha werewolf I normally read. Even though it’s not typical in romance stories these days, it was refreshing that the h isn’t virgin and the H is virgin (him being V I loved because normally werewolves are described as having different sexual partners before finding its mate and that I don’t like). It’s weird the H knowing this wasn’t that homicidal about those who touched her before like in other books. Giving her space and time is not typical either. And letting her sleep in her own house instead of moving with him immediately isn’t typical either. Werewolves are supposed to be territorial and possessive.
It’s beautiful the strong feeling bond they have. It saved her life. And it’s awesome that the community received her as one of them.
So, it’s okay but not great like other werewolf stories I’ve read.

SAFE
virgin/celibate/manwhore: h not a virgin & H virgin
age gap: idk
ow/om: no (om drama - abusive ex)

Jace and Dakota

This is the fourth book that I've read in this series and I'm torn with the rating. I absolutely love the hero, Jace, but I'm not as enamored with the heroine, Dakota. Because of her, the story disappointed me.

The premise of this multi author series is that a whole town turned into various monsters thanks to a punch provided by a scientist. The brew affected each person differently. In this story, Jace turned into a wolfman. I really liked Jace and was interested in his character arc. Even with the mythic story, Jace was just so human. Dakota is a human who moves to town. While she does have issues of her own about relationships, I felt her arc was uneven. She blew hot and cold too much for my taste. It made the story uneven.

This is a safe read. It's a standalone within the series. It does have some explicit language and sex in the book.

We met Dakota briefly in Double Dog Dare. Wanting to leave Denver, she feels and unexplainable pull to Screaming Falls. She’s beginning to feel more comfortable with the inhabitants and is working hard to get Paws Up, up and running. Jace is having a hard time adjusting to his new life. Years later he’s still not sure what to expect and if he’ll ever find the love and family he always wanted. Lately he’s been having weird feelings and smells are become too intense. What can it mean? Jace and Dakota had a pull towards each other that was unexplainable. Dakota’s past makes her second guess herself and her feelings for Jace. Jace is willing to put his feelings on hold to let Dakota have the time she needs to process their situation. She shows him that he’s loyal and kind and protective and everything she needs in her life. A sweet steamy monster read. I received an arc copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Ember Davis does it again with an extremely HOT romance that brings all the feels including amazing characters and a fantastic story! I am in LOVE with Jace and Dakota and couldn’t get enough of them!

Jace is a wolf man who has become a loner in the time since his change and spends all his time in the forest. On a trip to town he discovers Dakota, a new resident of his small town AND his mate. I loved the use of the mate bond in this book. The descriptions of its connection between them was incredible. The exchange of feelings, pleasure, a deep connection. I also liked how “knot” was used in this book. Not at all what I expected but extremely HOT! There’s even some suspense added in when something from Dakota's past begins causing her trouble. Every moment of this book was beautifully written and extremely enjoyable.

Jace, the male wolfman lead, is feeling frustrated in his woods and drawn in a particular direction. When he follows his instincts, he finds Dakota, the female human lead, who felt drawn to the town when she looked at where to set up her business and now feels drawn to him. Jace is convinced she doesn’t need a monster, regardless of what they both want, and Dakota has an ex who is stalking her…

This novella is dual POV, well written, and a cute and sexy read. I enjoyed Dakota’s determination to make this new start work for her. I understood Jace’s concern about whether he was a suitable partner. I appreciated the bond connection between them and the intimate scenes, and enjoyed the epilogue showing their HEA.

I absolutely loved this one! Jace and Dakota were meant to be! I love a good fated mates romance, and this one was really good. This series is really great and each one adds just a little bit more depth and dimension, and this one was no different. Jace, the town wolfman, is a loner who was wandering when he caught the familiar scent of "home" and tracked it down to a person, rather than a place. Dakota was in Screaming Woods to escape an abusive ex and felt a pull she couldn't explain until she ran right into it... Errr, rather, HIM. These two had such a wonderful connection that neither could deny their feelings, even when they didn't really understand what was happening. This was a really great read!.

This was a cute "light" paranormal romance. Dakota moves to Screaming Woods and meets Jace, a part wolfman who was turned in an accident 20 years ago. I call it light because it skirts the edges of magic and paranormal, a short story squished to fit within a Halloween collaboration. This is one of my favorite authors and I enjoyed her contribution to this set. One downside though is that while it made sense within the realm of the world she has created, having introduced Dakota and her story in a previous book, it doesn't have a lot of information about the Screaming Woods world and what happened 20 years ago. Only one of the books in the set really details that, so if you feel a little lost, make sure you read the earlier releases in the collaboration.

This book is a part of the Monster Between the Sheets series and focuses on Jace and Dakota. 20 years prior to the start of the story, Jace had been a part of a Halloween party gone terribly wrong. The incident left him as a wolfman and even bigger loner than he was before the party. He had always felt that the woods were his home until he caught a scent that felt like home. That scent happened to be Dakota. She had felt a deep pull towards Screaming Woods and once she finally laid eyes on Jace, she finally knew what had been driving her to set up her business there. It didn’t take long for them to realize they were mates. I loved how connected they were and how incredibly loving and protective Jace was over Dakota. This was an excellent read and an excellent addition to the series!

I really liked this book.
Both Jace and Dakota were extremely sweet.
They both have their issues that they have to work through to be a happy and content couple.
For Jace while his ultimate goal was to be a park ranger, which he was working and doing, he was lonely and carried a lot of anger and resentment for what he was changed into that awful Halloween night 20 years ago. Dakota on the other hand is just trying to get away from an abusive ex and maybe get her dreams finally up and going. She felt the pull to go to Screaming Woods she could've never guessed that it was fate leading her to her other half.
I really loved that while Jace just didn't like what he had become in the end he's thankful for what he was because it allowed him to save Dakota when the time came against her obsessive ex.

Sometimes things happen for a reason.

I liked this story a lot. It was entertaining and enjoyable although it does briefly touch on domestic abuse. The characters were interesting and likable for the most part. Hadley was a great best friend/sister to Dakota. Luke and Brock were with Hadley. Macneal was totally lame and I was glad that he had to deal with some consequences because of his actions. Jace lived out in the woods partly because of his job and partly due to the “punch” that he drank years ago that changed him forever. Dakota was getting settled in her new home and preparing for her business to open. The two of them had never met but were irresistibly drawn to each other. Their relationship grew quickly. There was a tiny bit of drama. I loved their happily ever after. I recommend reading this book.

I loved this book! It was such a sweet and exciting romance. Great world building and wonderful characters! I just read another book in this series (by a different author) and loved it. The base premise of these stories, in which half a town of people became some form of monster after drinking the punch at a Halloween party, was unique and intriguing. This story focuses on Jace, who became a wolfman, and thus a loner and wary of losing control of his beast. I love that Dakota's business was selling gourmet pet treats. The irony brought such a smile to my face! They have such great chemistry together. I definitely recommend picking this one up, and I hope to get my hands on this whole series! 5 stars.

I received an ARC from the author and am voluntarily leaving my review. Jace is another human drastically changed by the professor that fateful Halloween. He has preferred to remain in his woods with anger as his companion for a lonely future. Dakota has left her abusive ex behind and has finally found a place that feels like home. She is opening Paws Up and has felt really comfortable in town. These two meet and is mates that are matched for life. It is steamy and yet sweet and heartfelt at times. Jace is there for Dakota when she needs him most. I enjoyed their story and both characters. You could feel his frustration and pain at times which made their love that much sweeter.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Another new to me Author - on a roll this month! Fancied a quick standalone spicy, bodice ripping, read and this book delivered.
I had instant attraction, fated mates, biting, claiming, scenting, knotting and a primal chase ( check your triggers!) and my HAE all set in the rural Screaming Woods.
Dakota our human, arrives to the town to set up her business and almost immediately meets our loner, grumpy Jace. A Wolfman Park Ranger who had given up on finding love and the fireworks start!
There is some back history for both characters and enough story between the spice to satisfy my needs. I will also be reading the rest of the series now as I thoroughly enjoyed this book.
Sometimes you just need a quickie and this hit the spot!

Loved it!

Ember Davis has become one of my top favorite authors! Ive yet to read a book of hers that i didn't love. I love how they all connect somehow to another character in one of her other books. Love the little cameos! She totally rocked the PR genre! One of the best wolfman romances ive read yet. Plus i loved that instead of him being a shifter that shifts to a wolf, hes an old school wolfman. The main characters are both so lovely and are lonely and wanting to be loved so badly by someone but also fearing it as well. Both have their own insecurities and vulnerabilities. Both feel broken. But learn that together they can feel whole finally. Perfect book for October i really enjoyed it. Love U Ember please keep putting out your amazing stories for me to devour!!

okay as disappointed. Had a good plot/set up but the writing was just to weird, i feel like the author didn’t get the memo from the other author stories in this series.

The heroine was annoying and her personality was trying so hard to be “not like other girls” she just felt like a forced character and kinda corny, not in the good way. Also why add a soulmates story and have one wait but not the other? No one ever knows how to make a good soulmates romance, they all ruin there own stories fr. Didn’t make sense. Just very disappointed with overall, definitely the lest favorite in the series…
