Y entonces me obliga a quedarme a cenar.
Nicole Fox writes smart, sexy mafia romance novels. She is a crazy cat lady in her late 30s with a coffee addiction, an overactive imagination, and a husband who somehow puts up with her impulsive need to keep buying new plants for their house.
I really liked this until Uri locked Alyssa in his basement for weeks, didn’t let her out, told her she was nothing to him and assaulted her putting bruises around her neck. She just accepts everything, staying in his basement saying that he loves her - refusing to escape. He talks about using her for bait to capture his enemies.
Then she decides to go on a rescue mission for his brother against the mafia with a 14yr old, having no idea how to use a gun. Unsurprisingly she is taken and makes everything worse.
I’ll read on but not sure how much more I can take of Alyssa.

Alyssa Walsh alters her future when she mistakenly opens her neighbor's package and winds up a prisoner in his basement while he keeps her "safe" from the people that sent it. It doesn't take long before she realizes Stockholm Syndrome is real and so ate her now feelings for her captive, Uri Bugrov.
I have no idea why Nicole Fox's books aren't the most popular mafia out there. I mean, they're long, yeah, but oooh so fracking good! She is a master wordsmith who truly brings out all the emotion. This book is heavy on the trauma of sibling and parental loss and the resulting survivors guilt and over compensation. If this is a trigger for you, trust me, you'll be feeling it. The storyline is great and moves quickly. There's also plenty of laugh out loud moments along the ones that will have you wiping your tears. Super excited to see how this one ends!
Honestly this book would’ve been amazing if the FMC had a backbone and MMC actually apologized or did even a little bit of groveling to make up for the epic bs he put the FMC through. The MMC would’ve been too much of a AH if it wasn’t for his siblings but instead of the FMC putting her foot down, she lets him get away with EVERYTHING! If there was ANY chance he would apologize and grovel his butt off I would’ve probably read the next one but I know he won’t so I checked the reviews and guess what………….. HE DOESN’T!!! I love Nicole Fox but idk if I’ve been reading too many books with strong FMCs but this was disappointing.
No self respecting woman would allow this constant abuse and then "just know" Uri loves her. It's total bullshit. I don't know why we can't have strong female leads that are badass!!! I'm so sick of women in these books being a constant doormat that says "abuse me all u want. I can take it and know that u love me." This series disgusted me
The only good thing about this was Lev, Polly and Alyssa!! Alyssa, though she pissed me of sometimes, had her strong moments, but at the end she has the body-betraying syndrome.
There were a lot of repetitive scenes, and we didn’t really get to see them as a couple.
The thing with Nicole Fox's books is that the characters are all kind of the same, as is the storyline, but they’re addictive, and i’m gonna continue to read them even though they’re mediocre.
With this phenomenal book, Nicole Fox has once again proven herself. She truly is the undisputed queen of mafia romances. I have no idea exactly how she does it, yet she consistently turns out flawless novels. Midnight Purgatory, just like Nicole's previous books, captivates readers from start to finish. Her ability to intricately weave together complex characters and gripping plotlines is truly unmatched in the genre. With each new book, she continues to solidify her reign as the ultimate authority on mafia romances, leaving fans eagerly anticipating what she has in store next. I feel like I say this every time, but this time I wholeheartedly mean it. Uri and Alyssa are my favourite Nicole Fox book couple. Even though Uri and Alyssa might not be having the best time together at the moment, it's clear that, deep down, they do care for each other. Their chemistry is undeniable, and the way Fox delves into their emotional turmoil kept me on the edge of my seat. Despite the challenges they face, there's a sense of hope that they will find a way to overcome their obstacles and find happiness together. However, as much as I adored Uri and Alyssa, it was Uri's younger siblings, Polly and Lev, who stole my heart. Lev has such a beautiful soul, and I adore him with all my heart. I truly hope that everything in his life works out for him. Now Polly, who doesn't love a sassy 14-year-old, wants to put everyone in their place. She has such a fierce personality and strong determination, and I can't wait to see more of her. As much as I hate for it to be over, I can't wait to get stuck in book two.
“I may be pinned to the bed. He may be the one calling the shots and making the rules. But I’m the one making him unravel. I’m the one he’s been craving.”
The blurb really intrigued me. The character development was strong. I did enjoy the storyline. I love a healthy amount of spicy scenes BUT they end up really repetitive in the authors attempt to drag this out into a duet. I’ve read one of her duets before and the unnecessary dragging is the reason I’ve only ever read one other. Otherwise if I find an author I like I binge their books.

3.5 The first half of this book had such good banter, I laughed a lot.. as the story progressed it became more about Lev Uris brother who had a brain injury and Alyssa being held captive by URI: To me there was too much push back from the H in this duet. Although I liked Uris family there was too much about them and the evil guy and not enough relationship building btw the mcs…. All they did was F..ck and then the H pulled away and said they had no future. This happened about 25 times in this duet…. Find something else please to drive the story: I like the story and it was well written but making this a duet turned a 5 star read into really a 3 star read. When I have to edit a book by skimming a lot I can’t give a book more than 3 stars. I’m sad this one couldn’t hold up to its fantastic first half. Also Uri needed to grovel ALOT!!!!!
Well written Russian mafia romance set in the US. Not much mafia action - many references though. Lots of yes/no, push/pull conflict re the romance and sections did drag for me. Many steamy sex scenes. This book is part one of a duet, so it ends on a cliffhanger. Both books are available in kindle unlimited. While I was mostly entertained, I'm not sure if I'll bother with book 2. Could have been simplified and merged into one novel.
This… was PAINFUL. First, Alyssa was seriously annoying me with how standoffish she was to Uri (though he kinda deserved it). THEN, when he TOTALLY deserved it, she was in love with him and stopped being so mean, which made it easier for him to hurt her. And that’s the other thing!!! Uri was a complete and utter self-centered, cowardice, JERK!!! He would suddenly realize he was starting to feel more towards her and would turn into a stone cold (sorta) monster to her, hurting her to push her away, not even caring when it would make her sob or hurt other people to. I gotta be honest… I really hated him, and I’m feeling like he’s never gonna grovel like he needs to.
At the end, I felt sorry for Alyssa, and auto is making me sick, but I’ve already bought the second audiobook and I need to know what happens 🙄.
I think If I is shade too grey for my liking and although I'm sure a HEA will come at the end of the end of the second book, Alyssa better make him work for it cos he's waving too many red flags for me...yes I know it's fiction but there awesome things I find u forgivable... Still I liked it... And I Love Lev bless his heart!
2.5 Poorly scripted characters: You can put lipstick on a pig, but in the end a pig is still a pig. All the graveling in the world can't turn this story or Uri's character into a "love story".
The writing was good in parts of this novel and the plot/storyline had potential, but the story turned dark quickly, with little warning. I have been reading this genre for years and have read stories with very troubled dark MMC's that I eventually feel a connection with, whereas this one, absolutely not. The lower rating for this author's series is based upon two things: Uri and Alyssa.
Uri's character doesn't have psychopathic tendencies or could be considered crazy, but is a character that is just a mean SOB and asshole. He's self-centered, egotistical and a thoughtless man who is manipulative and never takes "responsibility for his actions". He always blames Alyssa or someone else even when he is the one making poor decisions or is the cause of the incidents that lead to a train wreck. If he says he is "sorry" there is always a "yes, but". He is an awful character that the author could have scripted better. His mind games with Alyssa and his Jekyll and Hyde personality, coupled with his indecisiveness made his character intolerable. They have unprotected sex throughout the first book which leads to a pregnancy. He blames her and of course, she takes the blame like the character she has become in book 1 instead of the woman she began as. Pathetic.
Alyssa's character grew on me even though the beginning of this book scripted her as an "airhead". She is kind, thoughtful, smart, independent and strong until the author reduces her to a ghost of what her character could have been, which, unfortunately can be a tendency for this author's writing. Time after time after she becomes Uri's captive on a trumped up "I need to protect you BS", she lets him abuse her mentally, sexually, plays constant Jekyll and Hyde mind games causing literal whiplash which eventually leads to physical violence and; thinks it love. Her history is tragic and she is constantly "taking the blame for everything that happens with Uri and his family" after her abduction. She began as a strong character until the author just made her into a submissive, sex crazed woman that keeps taking the abuse of a troubled man who gets off on hurting her because he refuses to admit his true feelings for her and continues to be the coward he is.
I am about 1/4 into book 2 with Uri character's getting more and more disturbing with the abduction of Polly and Lev's condition worsening. I am going to try and finish book 2, but despise Uri's character so much, will most likely skim this second book just to complete it.
This book popped up multiple times in my IG feed; the excerpt left me wanting more, so I decided to try it. However. There are some books that are all story and very little sex, and there are others that are all sex and very little story. “Midnight Purgatory” is the latter, and uses a ridiculous amount of pages to prove that.
Honestly, Alyssa and Uri are both annoying, him less so because we spend less time with him. The whole book is a big what-not-to-do list, and spends a significant amount of time reminding the reader of the wrongs. Alyssa doesn’t lean in, but she also doesn’t pull away. For someone supposedly so horribly shy that her best friend incorporated it into a nickname, Alyssa lets Uri do whatever he wants to her at the slightest wisp of wind. AND SHE DOESNT HAVE TO!! From the very beginning, even after realizing that the packages may have been mixed up, she doesn’t double (triple!) check the label or shake the box? Her bachelorette party box would weigh WAY MORE than a finger. Even to make the excuse that it was an absent minded opening of the box, it still doesn’t work. You don’t have to know exactly how much a box weighs that has handcuffs, six bottles of lube - plus whatever other nonsense was listed - to know that it will weigh more than a SINGLE HUMAN FINGER. Even a fat finger wouldn’t weigh as much as all that stuff.
I get that it’s supposed to be a cheeky way to bring the bad boy into the good girl’s life, but come on! There are more creative ways to do that.
The argument that by somehow opening the finger box put Alyssa in the line of danger is insane to me. There were no implications that Uri’s enemies were watching him or would’ve known that she had the package. Honestly, Alyssa was probably safe until Uri came for the box and tricked Alyssa into his house. He’s got so much money, I’m sure he could’ve just paid her off and disguised it as buying her house. Done and dusted.
The only character with sense is Polly, questioning why (and being rightfully horrified when she finds out) her beloved brother has a woman locked in the basement. And Polly tries to do the right thing from the moment she finds out. She doesn’t lie or wholeheartedly jump on the “Uri is keeping you safe” bandwagon; she asks questions and when things seem suspect, she questions that too. A real girl’s girl.
The best part of the book is either the relationship between Lev, Alyssa, and Polly or when everyone starts getting kidnapped. The story gained the movement there that it lacked throughout the other 90% of the book. However, for such a dramatic topic, the kidnapping lacked in drama. Polly gets knocked out with chloroform, so she gets a pass, but Alyssa really didn’t even try to fight for herself, Polly, or the baby. Like, she was willing to take a huge risk in escaping, but didn’t fight at all for her freedom? Didn’t scream? NOTHING?! Yeah, ok 🙄 A kidnapping is not the time to reinforce that a character is shy.
Will I read the second book? Yes because I hate cliffhangers and it’s free on KU. Is this book worth all of the social media ads? No.
The first chapter sucked me in. Alyssa felt like a real person, and her inner dialog was hilarious 😂. The mix of innocence and feisty made her endearing, and I was instantly on her side. Uri (Brava Boss) is HOTTTTT!!! However, there were several times throughout the book I wanted to shake and scream, get your head out of your ass. Alyssa is 'tricked' into staying with Uri after a string of 'break-ins' are reported. Shortly after, she finds herself Uri's not so reluctant prisoner. Both the FMC and MMC have past trauma that still haunts them several years later. Seeing them open up to each other was heartwarming....until Uri messed it up. Lev is Uri's younger brother, and I instantly loved him. Alyssa's relationship with Lev was amazing. Her kindness, patience, and protective nature of Lev made me love her even more. Polly is Uri's younger sister, age 14. She is away at boarding school and comes home on the weekends. Even at 14, you can see she will be a force to be reckoned with when she gets older. She is a spitfire and will not back down when she thinks something is wrong.
The book ends on a cliffhanger after Lev, Polly, and Alyssa get kidnapped by a rival.....I can't stand the anticipation. Cliff hangers keep me on pins and needles.....I can't wait to continue the story in Midnight Sanctuary
Overall, fantastic book and hot damn those spicy scenes! However, I say that about all of Nicole Fox's books. She is a fantastic author who brings her characters to life, and I fall in love with them every time.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Estoy sorprendida.
This is the first book in the duet telling Alyssa and Uri's story. The author takes you into their lives with heartache and chemistry and kept me reading with the action, suspense and emotions. She brings the story to life with her descriptive scenes and moves it quickly and fluidly. I was glued to the pages right to the end and still left with wanting more with the cliffhanger ending. I'm looking forward to the next book.
I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book. All opinions in this review are my own and freely given.
Another brilliant duet series from Nicole, excellent writing and great characters that will keep you coming back for more. ML is definitely a bit of a stretch at times he’s a very strong character with a tendency to get a bit angry and jump to the worst conclusions about the FL . He’s not physically violent towards her , but comes close at one point so be warned. Apart from that it’s really worth a read.
One night when I couldn't sleep I turned to kindle unlimited and boy was I not disappointed! This was interesting and kept my attention to where I couldn't sleep if I wanted to! So good and I had to get the next installment immediately!
I had no idea what this book was about aside from the synopsis and I only read it because it sounded interesting and Nicole’s writing style is really easy and addicting to read
Why this was #1 on kindle unlimited I have no idea… I was curious so I had to read but I’m honestly so confused. There were no perks to it. Like soooo bad… but I gave 2 stars because I was curious enough about this trainwreck that I had to find out if it got any better since so many people read it. Spoiler… did not
