Now every kid can write like a Wimpy Kid! An exciting companion to the bestselling Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
“First of all, let me get something straight: This is a journal, not a diary.”
This innovative interactive journal based on Greg Heffley’s own “diary” lets kids express themselves in an exciting new way. In Diary of a Wimpy Kid Do-It-Yourself Book, kids will be asked: What was the best dream you ever had? The worst thing you ever ate? The best secret you ever heard? The most trouble you ever got in for something that wasn’t even your fault to begin with? This Do-It-Yourself Book features art throughout, along with ruled and blank pages for readers to create their own stories, keep their own diaries, and record their favorites and least faves. Includes a bonus full-color comics section featuring the collected cartoons of Greg Heffley and his best friend, Rowley.
Jeff Kinney is an author of children's books including Diary of a Wimpy Kid book series. Jeff was born in College Park, Maryland, in 1971 where he created a comic strip called "Igdoof."He also created the children's website 'Poptropica'.
Last night I took every one out to let them spend twenty dollars each as part of their christmas presents. This book was one of the books that my daughter picked out. She has been having all kinds of fun sitting quietly and writing in it! Last night before going to bed I read what she had written and was laughing so hard at some of the things she wrote! This book is adorable and it also allows us to see what our children think about things we may have never thought to ask. I plan on getting my son one too when he gets a little older!
I have to admit we didn't get very far in this book, some of it was very funny for kids. The turnoff was the kind of disrespectful language that kids find to be funny... like calling people ugly or talking about farts... not something I want my kids to read, since I don't want them talking like that.
I have thought of revising my review since kids like it so much and it encourages them to read. I know my 7 year old son loves it and I finally let him check it out from the library... he and my 5 1/2 year old think it's hilarious. I know it's a 5 star book in their minds.
I figured I should let them read it as it will strengthen their reading skills. I have to admit I'm not sure I should have let him when I hear him reading.
Here are some reasons why (from today's reading session)... these happen to be from the First Diary book and not the do it yourself book:
* a comic of a student saying to his teacher: "Hey Mr. Ira, you pooped your pants again..."
*calling people "moron"
* a stupid joke: "doctor, could I have a new butt? My old one has a crack in it."
* "don't walk near our table... you're not even cute"
I guess it's every child's dream of how he/she might behave if there wasn't any accountability or consequences... or the way some kids actually act in their childish way when the adults aren't around, especially when they can get away with it.
Ah! Remember those middle school days? For me it was loopy earrings, banana clips, the girls with the perfect perms and spiked bangs. Not to mention, the social clicks, health class, and the giggles when a boy talked to you. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is laugh out loud funny. Jeff Kinney reminds me of those days in middle school and by the lives of my own 11, and two 13year olds not much has changed. Kinney has brought these awkward years much needed comic relief through cartoons and Gregg Heffley, a middle school student who becomes the unlikely hero. Greg really lays it out for us in his "journal" from his mom volunteering as a sub teacher to girls (because he really does like them). One of my favorite parts was when Greg tried out for the school play in Wizard of Oz. He really wanted to be the tree for two reasons: 1. It didn't have any speaking parts and 2: He was hoping he could throw apples at Dorthy. But then again all the middle school boys wanted to be trees. I can't wait until my sons read this book. It will be interesting to see their take. Funny!
Used this book for a class I taught on the first book, we used this activity book while reading the first book together. It was really useful, and really fun. I really liked that the activities creative and relevant to what kids like to talk about. Plus this book saved me a lot of time, it's basically a ready made class activity book, and it's great for getting kids to share their personal experiences, I think I learned a little too much about the kids in my class :)
This book is a wonderful mentor text for 3rd graders! It gives short stories (in comic strip form) with characters that are recognizable over time. Then it gives a series of pictures with empty bubbles for kids to write in their own funny little stories. Then it gives empty boxes for kids to be completely creative. It asks kids to draw a floor plan of their room, then a floor plan for their dream house. It shows how to draw stick figures with expression and has them answer questions about themselves and their homes. It gives a list of funny rules that a 9 to 12 year old might wish for. Of course, this is followed by promts for kids to write their own rules with illustrations to match. I would get this book as a gift for any 3rd to 6th grader and maybe beyond. The only reason I would not give it to a child younger than that is the disgusting humor and the bathroom humor, for example, "The Fart Police." Jeff Kinney knows how to sell books! If you are familiar with this series, it is exactly what you expect it to be, a workbook version of his book broken into small segments rather than one on-going story.
My oldest son got this one for his birthday this past summer and has been filling the pages with his own cute, nine-year-old stories. The book is set up with mini questionnaires that you can respond to and then there are blank pages for your own words. It is fun to read what my son has written. It's a super cute idea and the inspiration comes from the book series.
I don't think this was interesting. But the part that I got to write my own story was quite fun. I didn't really understand why so many people liked (loved) this. In my opinion, I didn't enjoy it as much. I think that this book might be more for the smaller kids...
This is clever, for a Diary of a Wimpy Kid book, since it gets children to write on their own, but still induces children to think selfishly and ultimately destructively since it also teaches to put up with the destructive malarkey from the so called friends. I can never be a fan of the series, but I can appreciate the attempt at goodness made in his book.
OMG, this book is SO much fun! It’s not just a regular book—it’s like your own Diary of a Wimpy Kid! You get to draw, write, and answer all these funny questions, just like Greg Heffley does in his journal. I love how it feels like Jeff Kinney is asking me to step into Greg’s shoes.
There are hilarious games, quizzes, and even spots to make your own comics. I spent hours filling it out, and it never got boring. My favorite part was writing my “autobiography” because it felt like I was creating my own story, just like Greg does in the series. The questions are super funny too, and they made me laugh while I thought about my answers.
If you’re a fan of Diary of a Wimpy Kid, you NEED this book. It’s like being part of the series. Plus, when you finish it, you have a cool keepsake of your own life that you can look back on and laugh at later. Seriously, 10/10!
Although it wasn't must reading and a "Do-It-Yourself" book, I was really happy to have my own story and almost feeling that it became a reality. It gives you a feeling that you're just like Greg in a way, but also showing you that this is really what happened to you at school, home, or maybe in the groceries! It was a lot of fun filling out the blanks in the book. I made a hilarious book after I read it all again with the blanks filled in.
My mom bought me this book while we were waiting in line at Barnes and Noble to meet Dog the Bounty Hunter. I'm sure I was much less annoying once I was quietly working on my Zoo-Wee-Mama cartoons.
Well now, this book turned out to be a terrific surprise! One might look at this Do-It-Yourself edition of Jeff Kinney's wildly popular series and label it a knockoff merchandise item, but that would be far from accurate. While it's true that the second half of the book is made up of blank pages to allow the owner to use it as his or her own personal journal (not diary, as Greg would remind you!), the first half of the book is comprised of the same kind of brilliant comedic writing that makes the other Diary of a Wimpy Kid books such hilarious and fun reading material. In fact, I might go as far as to say that this book is the funniest of the entire series. We see many more of the cartoon strips written by Greg Heffley, comics centered around Creighton the Cretin, and the man with very red lips and several others, as well. In my mind, the funniest part of the book is the section of questions from Rowley; it absolutely had me in stitches.
Another great thing about this book is the questionnaires provided for the reader, on everything ranging from personal likes and dislikes to plans (or predictions) for the future, from the opportunity to write advice from you to your future self, and fill-in-the-blanks tests to discern what you really think about everything and everyone. Of course, now, these questionnaires are very much tongue-in-cheek and often completely facetious, but they will get your mind moving in new and interesting directions, and they are all a lot of fun to do.
This book surpassed my expectations by a long shot, and I think that many readers who have passed by it due to the differences between it and the other books in the Diary of a Wimpy Kid series should think about giving this one a chance. I am very pleased that I did.
