✨୨⎯ "𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄!- 📖" ⎯୧-✨ #1 of the mirrored trilogy. 5 ⭐️ ──★ ˙ ̟🎀 !!
This might be my first solid five stars this year. And also my first time reviewing an arc!! I’m so so thankful to get to be one of the first to actually review this book!
This book was everything and more. It had me intrigued from the very start. Eva’s character was so perfectly written and I adored her so much.
It’s been a while since I was fully sucked into finishing a book, I literally started this yesterday and finished today.
The plot was amazing and also perfectly written and I just have zero words to express how much I adored it all.
I cant wait for when this book officially drops so everyone can see how good it is because omg I feel like I can’t move on.
I absolutely DEVOURED this book in less than a day. I couldn't put it down! The plot picked up relatively quickly from the beginning and hooked me right away. I loved the tension, I loved the plot twists, and all of the side characters were enjoyable too!
The books ends with a heckin' cliffhanger, so I'm so anxious to move on to book 2!
4,5 ✨️ holy shit, this is now one my new favorites.
"The Other Side of the Mirror" by Dana Evyn is a promising debut novel that ventures into the realms of fantasy with a mix of intrigue, romance, and political maneuvering. While the book boasts an engaging rhythm and likable characters, it does stumble in some areas, particularly in the protagonist's swift acceptance of the fantastical elements introduced.
At around 20% into the story, I found myself grappling with the ease at which the main character navigates through the magical world. As someone whose only frame of reference is the human world, her quick acclimation to the intricacies of the magic system felt somewhat rushed. It left me yearning for more development in her adjustment process, a deeper exploration of her initial disbelief and gradual acceptance.
However, despite this hiccup, the characters in "The Other Side of the Mirror" shine brightly. Evyn crafts a cast that is not only likable but also incredibly relatable. Their dynamics add depth to the narrative, making it easy for readers to invest in their journeys and relationships.
Speaking of relationships, the tension between the love interests is undeniably one of the novel's strongest points. Evyn masterfully weaves a captivating romantic subplot that keeps readers eagerly turning pages, rooting for the characters to overcome their obstacles.
Moreover, the fantasy aspect of the book is a standout feature. Evyn demonstrates a commendable level of world-building, intricately weaving together magical elements and political intrigue. As a debut novelist, Evyn's ability to craft a complex and immersive fantasy world is impressive. The intricacies of the political landscape add depth to the story, keeping readers on the edge of their seats until the very end.
"The Other Side of the Mirror" is a captivating debut novel that successfully blends fantasy, romance, and political intrigue. While it may stumble in pacing at times, the strength of its characters, gripping romantic tension, and well-thought-out fantasy elements more than make up for any shortcomings. Evyn's debut leaves readers eagerly anticipating the next installment, craving more of the enchanting world she has created.
Thank you so much to City Owl Press, NetGalley and, of course, Dana for sending me the ARC of this book in exchange of an honest review.
The style of writing of this book drew me in right away. I liked the witty banter and personalities that were well expressed. At times, the writing felt rushed and it jumped. I was confused as to what was happening and had to go back. There were several times I got very upset with the FMC for self sabotaging. This is huge pet peeve of mine. I did also feel like some ideas were inspired by other popular stories most of us have probably read. I loved the MMC and his supportive and protective nature. The last fight scene was well written and I could picture it in my head. Overall, The story was intriguing and I couldn't put it down. I'd give the spice level like 1.5-2. There are some triggers associated with this book, so please look up before you read.
The Other Side of the Mirror - The Mirror Trilogy, Book 1 by Dana Evyn is a gorgeous read. With fae-ntasy being a highly competitive genre right now, the Other Side of the Mirror has a fantastic spin on mortals in a fae realm and I was utterly gripped throughout
Eva's family are murdered and seven years later, she gets kidnapped and finds herself in a faerie realm. As if things were not discombobulated enough, a fae called Bash (awesome name btw) comes along and lets her know her fate is to meet her fae soulmate and stop a world ending curse ( I imagine that beats online dating but I digress) Eva accepts in exchange for the truth about what happened to her family
However, as if being yeeted into a faerie realm and leaving behind everything you know is not enough, things start to change between Eva and her saviour and even more so when she meets her intended. Life could not get any more complicated? Surely?
I absolutely adore this book, the characters, the flow, the world-building. This series is going on the list!
My review is left voluntarily and all opinions are my own
4.5 rounded. The Other Side of the Mirror is the perfect fantasy romance to scratch that itch! We have fae, mates, evil, mystery, found family, and steamy romance packed into the first book in this trilogy!
Eva’s family was murdered 7 years before the start of the book. Now she’s found herself kidnapped and inside of the faerie realm after living a mortal life for as long as she can remember. She starts piecing together her past and what her family’s death truly means while being taken to her mate in order to end a curse all while accompanied by a man named Bash. She leaves everything she knows behind to go on this journey. I thought this story was so fun and I NEED book two!! I felt as though the world and magics could have been a little more fleshed out, the writing was well done and I wouldn’t have been opposed to reading more of it! Sometimes the extra pages can make a difference but overall I thought it was a great story.
Thank you so much to Netgalley, Dana Evyn, and City Owl Press for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review. I can’t wait for everyone else to read this on April 9th!
Make it fairytale but darker, the plot definitely reminded me of other books I've read, filled with tropes galore, it was super enjoyable and a quick read. Honestly, at times I felt like things were happening a little too fast—from the things the fmc Eva was accepting to the romance, and if it was a standalone I'd have understood the rush but being a trilogy, even after the cliffhanger, I'm a little surprised by the pacing. I wouldn't have minded if the book was longer and there was a better build-up.
The world was very interesting and I hope we'll explore more in the next book, especially after finding out where Eva is from. The magic system was cool, always appreciate shadow/dark magic and I really loved the concept with the mirrors being portals, kinda gave me Alice in Wonderland vibes.
The characters and banter were fantastic, the found family was one of my fav parts of this book. I loved everyone, well except for the villain who was truly loathsome, but especially Bash and Eva and their romance.
"Eva, I've been going out of my mind since I left you in that place. When I was walking away from you, it felt like my soul was about to rip in two."
Bash was one of the best things in this story. The romance was a bit insta-lovey even if there's a pretty good reason for it again things were happening too quickly but the smut was great.
The ending didn't surprise me, I fully expected that exact cliffhanger (it was still messed up regardless) and there were other things I was able to guess early on but there were a few twists at the end which were good.
The Other Side of the Mirror was bingeable and entertaining, I'm excited for book 2!!
eternal gratitude to Netgalley and the publisher for the ARC all quotes are from an advance copy and may differ in the final publication
Omg!!! 😱 first of all I want to say thank you for allowing me to read my first ARC and I have to say it did not disappoint!
If I could rate this book high I would ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
——> the plot ❤️ ——> I loved the slow burn between the two MC ——> strong MFC❤️❤️❤️ ——-> SPICY 🌶️ 🥵👨🍳💋 We have a little possession because she is his and he will do anything for his anima!
“ this isn’t goodbye, just goodbye for now”
Ahh I just loved everything about this book and I can’t wait for the next one. ❤️🫣 don’t leave me hanging 👀👀👀
DNF. The cover is beautiful, and the premise is promising, but the first few pages displayed a half-baked writing style and overused tropes that I struggled not to cringe at. There were constant reminders of her "dead family", and the situations had a lot of telling and explaining rather than showing. I like that the main characters are older, but I wish the writing and situations could feel like it. I also wish the MC developed before the introduction of Bash, because we get another snarky, eye-rolling heroine dropping a soliloquy on this man's freckles right after she almost died. Okay.
Will update if I can get through it and I can give it another shot.
-This review is posted on Goodreads and feedback sent to Netgalley.
Thank you NetGalley for letting me read and review! This book had all my guilty pleasure tropes!! -forced proximity -one horse -nonsexual cuddling and comfort -fates mates It has the sweetest MMC. He's protective and supportive. He's also described as looking completely different than most other books in this genre, which I appreciate! Was a lot of this recycled tropes and plots? Yes. But why change things that work? The tension and spice was *chef’s kiss* I enjoyed it very much. I need the next one ASAP. That cliffhanger sucked!
The Other Side of the Mirror by Dana Evyn is the first book in a new fantasy series, The Mirrored Trilogy. Eva’s loses her family when they are attacked and her mother saves Eva by pushing her through a magical mirror to the mortal realm. Seven years later she finds herself back in the fae world, learning more about herself, her magic, and what happened to her parents and brother years ago.
This book easily swept me up into the world and had me needing to find out what happened next. The world building and character development is well written and it’s easy to feel the character’s emotions as the story unfolds.
Eva is very much our strong and stabby FMC, ensuring that she can handle herself in tough situations. It’s only as she goes on this journey that she starts to open her heart back up. We definitely get a good slow burn and banter leading up to the romance in this book. And several good spicy scenes as well!
This book releases on April 9th and it’s definitely worth checking out! It does end on a cliffhanger, but I am already excited to see where the 2nd book takes us! This book easily gets 4.5 stars from me!
Thank you so much to Dana for sending me an early copy of this book to read and review! All opinions are my own.
I fear this books is like me during the power outage the last couple of days: it didn’t eat (but there may have been some snacks with a little effort put in).
This book was just a bunch of tropes thrown together. Instalove, found family, stabby FMC who is pretty whiny, girl gets dragged to a fae realm. The nicknames that the two main characters had for each other were just bad. I found myself cringing every time I read them.
Also, the spicy scenes I was SPRINTING through them. My kindle couldn’t keep up with the page turn rate. I simply could not. Ick mode activated.
Oh and let’s not forget the FMC calling the people she met about two days ago her “tribe”. First of all, are we middle schoolers again? *PTSD flashbacks intensify* second of all, you’ve known them two days (maybe it was more, but it wasn’t many more).
Lastly, everything was “told” and not shown. Honestly, I think this is probably what contributed to the ick of the book for me.
Originally, I was going to give it 1 star, but I’ll give it 1.5. Because with a good editor and a couple of round of edits, it probably could have been a good book.
I was given the arc for book two, and I guess I hate myself enough, that you’ll all be seeing my review for the second book too. SEE YA IN A FEW.
I had the amazing opportunity to read an ARC of The Other Side of the Mirror and I loved it so much!!
She has been hidden from the fae world her entire life. When she runs into trouble one night, her world is blown apart. She must marry her fae soulmate in order to save both their realms… but she’s catching feelings for the handsome fae who came to save her.
If you are looking for a fae fantasy book with a unique magic system, fated mates, forced proximity, a SHADOW DADDY, fast pacing, elemental magic, and found family, TOSotM is an absolute must read!! I was in the worst slump before reading TOSotM and it completely revived me, it was just what I needed. 🤩
I love a fantasy book that gets started with the action right away, and this was totally how TOSotM started.
I loveeeee the forced proximity, and when it comes with only one horse?! Chefs kiss. Also there’s a scene where he runs into her room shirtless, just saying 😏
I loved the magic system. The mirrors are portals which was so cool!!
I adored Eva and seeing her grow throughout the book. She was going through so much but she is just so strong.
I LOVE BASH. I need more of his POV!!! Meet your newest shadow daddy obsession whose shadows play with her when he’s asleep. And he calls her Hellion! I am DECEASED 🫠
I loveeee when all the secrets are revealed at the end. But also a love hate relationship because I want the next book now!!! That CLIFFHANGER ☹️
I just had a fun time reading this and it was so easy to binge. I highly recommend reading The Other Side of the Mirror!!
CW: sexual assault
Things to expect: Fae Port fantasy Hidden magic Found family Curses that are ravaging the lands Only one horse Shadow daddy Touch her and die Elemental magic She saves herself Fated mates / soul mates Knife to throat Spice: 2.5/5
Okay, so now that that is out of the way, I can get to my review. ;) There's a cliffhanger ending to this, as you would expect from a trilogy, and it is a doozy!
When I started this, I wasn't necessarily feeling the first couple of chapters. Eva just seemed so much like she was refusing to actually LIVE because her family had perished in a housefire SEVEN years before, and something about that just didn't really grab me. HOWEVER, enter a muddy golem attack and banter with a handsome, freckled redhead and the tendrils of the Faewilds, Bash & Eva pulled me in. I just couldn't stop reading this, and stayed up all night (No regrets!).
Eva has grown up in the mortal world, completely oblivious to the fact that not only does another realm exist, but that she and her family are Fae that had to flee their realm during a war. She has been basically on her own, with only her best friend, since both of their families died within a short time. When she meets Bash, a random stranger who thinks she needs protection and also that she is some sort of key to ending a world-ending curse, everything changes.
Bash is a favorite type of hero of mine: Strong, mischievous, respectful, loyal, and willing to show some vulnerability. He's not into unnecessary violence, but will not hesitate to right a wrong when he sees one (like someone he cares about being hurt... ;) ).
I loved the banter between Bash and Eva, and the slow burn that you want to turn into the inferno they deserve. There was so much chemistry between them, both physical and emotional! I'm not a fan of instalust or instalove, and there was none of that here. There was a good (welcome) amount of spice in the last half.
The world itself, with its lore and magic, felt the right amount of fleshed-out for the first book in the series. The explanation as to why Eva didn't know about any of it worked for the story, as did the way it all got to come out. I liked the way everyone's magic was always around in some way, a bit playful at times, but not with a mind of its own (just an extension).
This book isn't for the faint of heart, as the author gives fair warning of in the beginning. There is some darkness and grit, and the characters find themselves dealing with some truly despicable villains. There is some really great dialogue after some dark times, which I feel elevated the romance and the depth of the characters.
I didn't expect to love this as much as I did, but it was one of those books that I was tempted to immediately re-read!
Thank you City Owl Press for the ebook ARC through NetGalley. This in no way influenced my review, and my words are all 100% my own.
The Other Side of the Mirror had a promising premise, and the cover is undeniably gorgeous. Unfortunately, that's where my enjoyment ended. I DNFed the book at 15%, and here’s why.
From the very first chapter, the writing style was repetitive to the point of exhaustion. The female lead's tragic backstory is mentioned so frequently that it feels less like character development and more like an attempt to hammer the reader over the head with it. By the time I reached the second chapter, I was on the verge of pulling my hair out if I had to hear about her dead family one more time. Seriously, it’s mentioned in nearly every paragraph, making it hard to connect with the character beyond her grief, which is poorly handled and overexposed.
The plot also suffers from major logical flaws. For instance, the protagonist gives a spare key to her apartment to a total stranger she’s known for less than 24 hours. This decision felt wildly out of character, especially for someone who’s been through significant trauma and should presumably be more cautious.
To make matters worse, when she finds this stranger, Clay, in her apartment in his monster form, she immediately knows it’s him. There’s no buildup, no moment of realization—just instant recognition despite him looking completely different. The scene felt rushed and underdeveloped, stripping away any potential tension or mystery.
Another confusing element is her sword training. Her military dad taught her to use a sword instead of modern weapons like guns. Since she’s from the fae world but now lives in a modern setting, you’d think she’d question why she wasn’t taught how to use a gun. Instead, this detail just felt out of place.
And despite not having used her dagger in seven years, she somehow remains a flawless fighter, taking down someone who’s presumably far more practiced without breaking a sweat. This lack of realism makes it difficult to take the story or the character seriously.
The protagonist's reaction to the love interest, Bash, felt juvenile and out of place given the gravity of the situations she was supposedly facing. Instead of developing the main character’s arc or diving into the intriguing elements of the story, we get another eye-rolling, snarky heroine who can’t resist waxing poetic about a guy’s freckles right after a near-death experience. It’s frustrating, to say the least.
Overall, The Other Side of the Mirror had potential, but the repetitive writing, confusing plot points, and forced character interactions made it hard to enjoy. I hope future works from this author are more polished and engaging.
WOW! This was an amazinggggg read! From the vast and detailed world building (both human and fae realms), detailed characters, rich history/background and politics, the character and plot development! It was just phenomenal. I loved the characters all from the jump and this book did amazing at continuing my love for them and building them up. I can’t wait to see how everything unfolds in the next books and I hope we get even more info about the side characters and parents history in the books to follow. I couldn’t put the book down once I started and I cried when I got to the acknowledgments bc I didn’t expect it to be over. There are some classic tropes and Dana does them perfectly!! She also took some elements that are common in fantasy novels and twisted them to her own in such a beautiful way. I absolutely adored this book and cannot wait for the next!! Bash and Eva are my new loves! Be wary there are some heavy topics in this book, but it’s handled so well and really tugs at your heart strings. Also the spice and romance were done soooo well, I was rooting for them the whole time!!
I love a shadow daddy, but I love them even more when they are written like this🤌🏻
The Other Side of the Mirror is a romantasy with everything I love: a gripping plot, magnetic characters, a sprinkle of spice, and stellar writing. I devoured it in a day.
Bash and Eva are unforgettable, with electric chemistry (my gosh he BATHES her, it’s one of my favorite tropes) and witty banter that had me kicking my feet in the air. The world-building is rich, the side characters shine, and the forbidden slow burn is irresistible.
This book had me on the edge of my seat with twists that keep you guessing. This story of magic, mystery, and found family delivers surprises right up to its jaw-dropping ending. Highly recommend! I need book two immediately
First of all Thank you NetGalley, the publisher, and Dana Evyn for providing me with an ARC to read and review. For the Other side of the Mirror.
3.5 stars
I love the fact that this book has multiPOVs, Is face Paced Soulmates And has a hint of something different ie the use of mirrors as gateways and the magic system is unique.
I did think it was a good start to the series, a romance that you can start with if you are wanting to get into romantasy books. However I did find that the plot line even if it did have some good twists did leave me thinking I saw it coming.
I do have questions about what will happen in the next book but all in all thought this is a good start.
Loved this. Powerful magic, hidden worlds, fated mates, strong heroine, and amazing characters. Loved the pacing and twists, and the intense dark threats they face. You know it's good when there's a villain you detest so much! So many amazing microtropes too, it was swoony, spicy and addictive. Hooked from start to finish and I cannot wait to read the next immediately!
Fated mates 🔥 Hot shadow daddy😏 Faes 🧚 Magical powers Found family
Okayyyyy🤭
This was such a fun read!!! A little bit fast paced but I didn’t mind it because it was action packed !! There literally never was a dull moment in this book!!
I love Eva’s personality!! Although many things scared her throughout the book, she didn’t let them stop her. She was super brave, a lot more than I would’ve been in her situation and proved to everyone she could handle herself like the badass that she is .
Bash is such a sweetheart 🥹 I can’t handle the cuteness of him & Eva 🥹 they are so freaking cute !!
From the time I was a small child, I absolutely adored fairies. I had fairy toys, fairy like clothes, you name it. This fascination with fairies has continued well into adulthood, where I read every book about fairies that I can get my hands on. It is no surprise that I was drawn to this book. What is surprising is that although this book was far from original in terms of plot, character development, world-building, etc. and I've literally read hundreds of books with the same premise and outcomes, so this was hardly new material for me. Despite the lack of originality, I absolutely loved it!
The book was fun, fast paced, addictive and well written. Overall, it was a really fun summer read! Is this the most intellectual book? No - but it was still enjoyable. I could definitely see this being made into a summer blockbuster movie or mini-series - it just had that kind of vibe. The romance between the two lead characters was so well done and the chemistry was part of the reason I read this book in only a few days.
For a book with no originality, this was awesome, fun and a guilty pleasure!
I would caution that although this book is about fairies, it is definitely not for children. The book can be sexually graphic in parts, so I wouldn't give this to younger readers.
I will definitely read the sequels when they come out. To the author, thank you for letting me be a part of this world!
FMC witnessed her family being assassinated. Years later on her birthday, a man shows up at her place telling her she needs to go with him and reunite her with her soulmate to save the human and fae realm. Oh and the man is actually fae lol.
One thing I really liked about this story is that the supernatural love interest is only 50 instead of 400 years old like most books I’ve read lol
Eva is such a badass, even before she comes into her power and learns who she is and who she’s destined to be. She also doesn’t spend too much time questioning herself either, she’s so smart and brave throughout the book!
As for Bash…I couldn’t love him more. He’s the perfect mix between “don’t touch her” and “she’s strong enough to fight her own battles”. The most supportive book bf.
Thanks NetGalley for giving me the chance to read this gem early! I cannot WAIT for the rest of the trilogy!
It's rare these days to find fantasy books with an unique plot and my heart sings with joy when this happens. I've loved this book and Eva and Bash held me glued to the page since the begining. I need book two like yesterday
5 stars
~ I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book received via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own ~
The beginning had me exited for this book but as I kept reading I couldn’t help but compare it to a couple of books from this past years. And I know it’s hard to write a completely original story nowadays, specially fantasy there’s gonna be a lot of the same elements but that’s all I could think about while reading. Also the timeline felt off, like everything felt very rushed.
