Neurodiversity Playbook: How Neurodivergent People Can Crack the Code of Living in a Neurotypical World

This book represents a summation of a decade’s worth of therapy, research, workshops, and presentations around the unique aspects of social-emotional development in the neurodivergent community. The book grounds its approach in neuroscience and then applies those data to how our brains impact our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. As a child psychologist who specializes in working with this population, I pride myself on identifying the challenging aspects of having a different brain and empowering kids to manage those differences. As such, this book will contain sections that directly address the parts of being gifted that have traditionally been emphasized less: making friends, maintaining relationships, regulating emotions, communicating your feelings and needs appropriately, and being able to identify contextual factors to understand why people are acting the way they are. Naming the issues is one thing, but each section will contain case examples, clinical advice, and tangible skills that will help students grow in the areas of social-emotional learning (SEL). These skills are deliverable, generalizable, and appropriate for school, home, and the community. Most importantly, they work. I often say that I want my clients to have a little “pocket Dr. Matt” to help them navigate the world; this book is my attempt at creating that kind of external support.

I am a licensed therapist who is also diagnosed with OCD. I have never particularly identified with the term, "neurodivergent," although I know OCD is a form of neurodivergence. However, this book has changed that!

In the mental health world (and in the world of millennials and Gen Z), we often only hear the term "neurodivergence" when referring to autism or ADHD, but it encompasses so much more. While reading this, I learned a great deal, was able to apply some of the skills that were taught, and made new connections about past memories of being labeled as a Gifted child that I had never considered before. I have discussed some of the topics from this book with clients already, and sent out the title to clients as a recommendation for when the book is released.

Highly recommend this book to anyone who works in the mental health or education fields, and anyone who is (or loves someone who is) neurodivergent... and since 1 in 5 people are neurodivergent, I'd assume every person can benefit from the knowledge in this book!

This book is incredible. I felt seen and called out and also like I had someone who actually understood what was going on and how my brain works. Refreshingly not uptight as it talked about some high-level concepts. Very approachable and readable. Very practical and applicable book.

At Kreuzberg Women Book Club, we read Neurodiversity Playbook slowly and it rewarded us at every turn. What stood out most was the rare balance between validation and practicality. This isn’t just a book that tells neurodivergent readers they are enough it shows them how to navigate a world that often misunderstands them without asking them to shrink. It sparked one of our most meaningful discussions this season.
