Darkness . . . Fear . . . Death. Valleyfair is no longer the peaceful city it once was. A distant war is raging, taxes are high, and soldiers march through the streets every night. Lord Darkon’s castle, on the cliffs above the city, stands as a grim reminder of the tyranny that rules the land of Veridon. To resist means death. And yet a small group of outlaws are willing to put their lives on the line to stand against evil. Rhys, Shara, Killian, and Raven are ready to sacrifice themselves if need be, so that others can live and worship freely. As Lord Darkon’s net of oppression draws tighter, their world crumbles rapidly around them. Can they find the strength to rise and stand in the face of disaster?
Phoebe Hinkle has a passion for good, clean adventure stories that point readers to God. She began writing at an early age and published her first novella when she was fifteen. Although that first book was full of cringe-worthy errors (the main reason why it's not for sale online), it was the gateway to an incredible writing journey that, Lord willing, will continue for the rest of her life.
Phoebe can usually be found with her two cats, her laptop, and a mug of tea or coffee. She loves serving God, playing games with her family, and acting out stories with her friends.
Great book! The first chapter just yanked me in, and I was completely blown away by how awesome it was!
I'm generally a more character-driven reader than plot, but this was more plot-driven, with quite a bit of action, which was new and refreshing.
Lovely map! And also, the character name guides were helpful.
Poor Rhys. I started calling him "Rice" at the beginning, because, well, that's where my mind went, but his name is actually pronounced "Reese" according to the name guides? 🤭
He was really sweet.
Shara too.
Killian was, of course, my favorite character, though quite often he made some stupid decisions that I definitely did not sanction.
Raven was definitely an interesting character, and one I will love with all my heart.
Gage somehow became my younger sibling character? He's just so adorable!
And the plot was awesome too. After the first two or three chapters, it slowed down a bit, but once I got past that it was nice and fun.
A lovely, uncomplicated book, on the whole.
Possibly a new comfort read. 🙃
(Upon review, I decided a precise rating would be 4.7 stars, so I rounded up instead of down.)
Welcome, my friends, to the land of Veridon! To Stand is just the first book in a series, so if you like it, there's more to come. 😉
Of all the books I've written to date, these characters feel the most real to me. Part of that is probably because I spent so much time in their heads, working out their backstories and trying to figure out what made them tick. But there's still a few that are keeping secrets from me . . . 😒
So, what can you expect in this story? Here's a few of my favorites: -a cinnamon roll with a slow-but-sure redemption arc -a snarky Celtic-*ish* elf with a rapier -truths from Scripture -intrigue and subterfuge -swordfights! -dragon stuff (bcuz cool, right?) -blue and silver. Lots of blue and silver.
So do enjoy! And if you want to know which character you're most like - yes, there's a quiz for that!
This was an exciting adventure story that I greatly enjoyed! It’s a fantasy, but with no magic, though there are elves!
It follows several young people who are seeking to help those suffering under the rule of the tyrant king, which reminded me a lot of Robin Hood! Rhys was probably my favorite character, and I thought he had an interesting backstory!
I thought the Christian messages were well-done, and since the setting is based on medieval times, it seemed very natural to include an Abbey, with Sisters and a priest.
There were some things I would have done differently if I had written it, but then, that’s practically every book I’ve ever read. Other than brief violence and just the tiniest bit of romance, there aren’t any content warnings.
Overall, I thought this was a fun, wholesome adventure story, perfect for fans of Robin Hood!
