After the Ocean

Rate this book
A painful unsolved mystery resurfaces after decades of confusion in this emotional story about inter-generational trauma, family, and the beauty of Puerto Rico.

Thirty years ago young music student Emilia Oliveras married Paul, her dream man. Their Caribbean honeymoon cruise was idyllic—until the night he disappeared from their ship, presumed drowned. Reeling from the loss, Emilia was horrified when Paul's wealthy, vindictive family tried to railroad her as a gold-digging murderer. She escaped home to Puerto Rico and then across the country, where she became Emily Oliver, suburban wife and mother of two. Still, the trauma and secrets of her past ruined her second marriage, and created a disconnect with, and between, her grown daughters. But now a mysterious phone call suggests Paul is alive and well.

THE GOOD:

Beautiful, heartwarming, intriguing.
Emilia/Emily seems a lovely soul; her daughters are feisty, fun, and captivating.
Great backstory for all.

Told in alternating points of view that switches with each chapter and keeps things interesting and moving along.

Clean fiction with a no diversity checklist bingo and a happy ending that leaves one feeling peace.

THE BAD:

The cover and title. While the tale does begin on a cruise ship near Puerto Rico, in this case I don’t think they accurately represent the story. A better title would have been Return to Me, taken from a poem read near the end of the novel, which has multiple shades of meaning for this book.

I would have lived more detailed descriptions of the lush Puerto Rican island as well as the small “nothing” town in Oregon where Gracie and Meg grow up.

These are small issues, however, overall.

CONCLUSION:

Highly recommended. I will definitely be reading more from this author!

i felt like this had so much potential and could have made a great story, but the writing was pretty juvenile and the characters were almost emotionally immature in both the past and present. the plot was good, but just felt the premise fell flat.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for an advanced electronic copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!

Short version: I loved this and will read anything that Lauren E Rico writes.

Emilia and Paul are newlyweds in their early twenties, having just eloped and hopped on a cruise ship to celebrate. Two nights in, after a stop in Puerto Rico, Paul is missing, and Emilia is concerned, but nobody will take her seriously. She calls his parents, the Winsteads, because she knows their money will get things moving, but instead, they shift the blame to Emilia and try to get her arrested and charged with Paul's disappearance. Her only option is to disappear herself and hope the Winsteads never come looking for her.

Thirty years later, Emilia receives word that Paul might be alive and living in Puerto Rico. She immediately hops on a plane to follow that lead. Not having previously known about this aspect of their mother's past, her two adult daughters, Meg and Gracie, follow her.

This is a story of mystery and love. Family and the strength of connection. Seeing parts of people that you may not have ever seen in such a way. And I loved it.

This book is out on December 24th and I think it's a must read for anyone and everyone!

Thank you to l NetGalley and the publisher for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I read Familia last year by this author and it was one of my favorite reads, so I immediately requested this book. I enjoyed this book and how it showed that redemption can be possible. I do feel like the story could’ve been more fleshed out towards the end or maybe we could’ve seen more at the end but I am happy with this story.

I hesitate to call this a suspense/mystery and lean more toward calling it a domestic drama. While there is definitely secrets and an underlying mystery of what happened, it focuses a lot more on the relationships and coming to terms with what life throws at you. I enjoyed it, but wish there would have been more suspense and build up to the “twists.” I think less POVs could have helped accomplish this.

The premise was intriguing, but the book itself was so… easy. Middle school reading comprehension level (but adult content). The mystery is solved in the first half of the book. The characters are one-dimensional and things just fall into place for them. The “spirits” (whatever those are, because that’s all we’re given) are how the author explains away all of the plotholes. There is a LOT of telling (characters have long dialogues perfectly explaining what is happening) and very little showing or letting the reader figure things out.

I picked it up hoping for a good mystery and to get a glimpse into Puerto Rico and history, and only finished it because I wanted to see if this guy they’re all looking for is as great as he’s cracked up to be. This could have been a mysterious, poetic book full of insights into the oil money world, Puerto Rican law, detective work, criminal psychology, etc, but it felt a bit more like a Blues Clues episode. Absolutely not bad if that’s what you’re looking for! But it just wasn’t what I expected from the description.

Lauren E. Rico's "After the Ocean" is a deeply moving exploration of family secrets, lost love, and the ripple effects of decisions made in desperate times. The novel masterfully weaves together multiple timelines and perspectives, creating a rich tapestry of interconnected lives affected by one pivotal moment - the disappearance of Paul Winstead from a honeymoon cruise thirty years ago.

Rico's writing style is fluid and engaging, with a particular talent for crafting authentic dialogue that reveals character depth while moving the story forward. The author demonstrates remarkable skill in handling multiple point-of-view characters, seamlessly transitioning between perspectives without losing narrative momentum.

Character Development & Relationships

The heart of the story lies in its well-drawn characters and their complex relationships:

- Emilia/Emily: A woman who sacrificed everything to protect her unborn child, living decades under an assumed identity. Her character arc from frightened young bride to protective mother to woman reclaiming her past is compelling and believable.

- Gracie: The daughter who inherited more than just her father's looks - her drive, perfectionism, and struggle with relationships mirror both her biological parents in unexpected ways.

- Meg: The younger daughter whose musical talent echoes her mother's abandoned dreams, wrestling with expectations and her own desires.

Rico excels at portraying the intricate dynamics between mothers and daughters, sisters, and family members separated by secrets and circumstances.

Thematic Elements & Emotional Depth

The novel explores several profound themes:

- The weight of family secrets and their generational impact
- The complexity of forgiveness and redemption
- The nature of identity and how it shapes our relationships
- The power of music as both healing force and emotional conduit

Setting & Atmosphere

Rico's portrayal of Puerto Rico is vivid and authentic, using the island's beauty and culture as more than just backdrop. The contrast between the sun-drenched beaches and dark family secrets creates an effective atmospheric tension throughout the narrative.

Critical Analysis

Strengths

- Complex, well-developed characters
- Masterful handling of multiple timelines
- Rich cultural elements and setting details
- Emotionally resonant exploration of family dynamics
- Effective use of music as both plot device and metaphor

Areas for Improvement

- Some plot revelations feel slightly telegraphed
- The pacing occasionally slows in the middle sections
- A few secondary characters could be more fully developed
- Certain coincidences stretch credibility

Impact & Literary Merit

The novel stands out in the contemporary mystery thriller genre for its emotional depth and complex character work. While it contains elements of traditional suspense, it transcends genre conventions to deliver a powerful meditation on love, loss, and redemption.

Cultural & Social Context

Rico handles themes of class prejudice, cultural identity, and family expectations with sensitivity and nuance. The portrayal of Puerto Rican culture and the immigrant experience adds depth to the narrative without falling into stereotypes.

Final Verdict

"After the Ocean" is a compelling and emotionally resonant novel that succeeds on multiple levels. While some plot elements occasionally strain credibility, the strength of the character work and emotional authenticity carry the story. Rico has crafted a moving exploration of family, identity, and the power of love to transcend time and tragedy.

Why Not 5 Stars?

While "After the Ocean" is a strong novel with many admirable qualities, a few elements prevent it from achieving perfection:

- Some plot conveniences that strain credibility
- Occasional pacing issues
- A few underdeveloped secondary characters

These minor flaws don't significantly detract from the novel's emotional impact and overall quality, but they do leave room for improvement in Rico's future works.

Conclusion

"After the Ocean" is a compelling addition to the contemporary mystery thriller genre that prioritizes emotional depth and character development over mere plot twists. Rico has crafted a moving exploration of family bonds, lost love, and the possibility of second chances that will resonate with readers long after they turn the final page.

The novel's greatest strength lies in its authentic portrayal of complex family relationships and the ways in which secrets and unspoken truths can shape lives across generations. While some plot elements might stretch credibility, the emotional truth at the heart of the story remains powerful and convincing.

Recommended for readers who appreciate character-driven narratives that blend elements of mystery with deeper explorations of family dynamics and personal identity. Rico has established herself as a voice to watch in contemporary fiction.

Quick, interesting read. I liked the layout - the 30 years before and the now. I liked that we got 2 main perspectives, but we did get others in order to give us the full picture and round out the story. Although I felt like the plot relied heavily on coincidence, I did like the way it was woven into the story and the belief of what guided it. Great ending.

After the Ocean

Narrated by Victoria Villareal, Robb Moreira, Frankie Corzo

About the book 👇🏽

How do you find your way back when you’ve left yourself behind?

A painful unsolved mystery resurfaces after decades of confusion, sending one woman and her daughters on a journey of redemption in this emotional story about intergenerational trauma, family, and the beauty of Puerto Rico for fans of Nina LaCour, Xochitl Gonzalez, Elizabeth Acevedo, Jodi Picoult, Celeste Ng, and Julia Alvarez.

🌊 My thoughts:

“Someday he will have enough words to tell her what is in his heart. Someday they will be what they were meant to be all along.
And until that day comes, his heart will speak in the language of love and his soul in the language of music.”

I loved the audiobook and highly recommend it! The narrators were incredible and did a fantastic job with this story. I was hooked from the very beginning and listened to it in one sitting! It’s full of family drama, secrets, and redemption. There’s a reason there’s an abundance of rave reviews for this! When I saw that Aardvark had it as a choice, I did not hesitate to add it to my box! And if you enjoyed the book Familia also by this author, I am sure you’ll love After the Ocean. So if you’re looking for a fast read, with short chapters, and a book that’ll warm the heart… look no further! After the Ocean is out now!

Happy reading 📖🌊🎧

This was a very easy read with what I would call a “light mystery”. I enjoyed a lot of the plot elements ( musical component, sister rivalry, Spanish element) and the story had a good pace. Jumping back and forth in time doesn’t always work for me but this was fine as it was a 30 year time frame that was easy to keep track of. It did lag a bit at the end and the wrap up was a little slow and anticlimactic. I enjoyed the portrayal of Emily and Detective Miguel and their battle against “the rich”.

In After the Ocean we meet Emilia when her husband Paul goes missing on their honeymoon cruise. Never to be seen again. He comes from a wealthy family that immediately casts her as a suspect and gold digger. Knowing well how they operate, with the help of a young detective, Miguel, Emilia goes into hiding from the people that may come after her. Thirty years later, Emilia receives a cryptic message from Miguel - Paul may very well be alive.

This book completely grabbed me with its mystery, timeline, short chapters, and love story. There was intrigue and secrecy that made this novel very entertaining. Family tragedy and layers and layers of secrets. It was basically a giant telenovela and I really loved that! The pacing was excellent and it worked super well to create an emotional conclusion. It was poignant yet heartwarming, and the Puerto Rican setting added a great atmosphere.

Thank you to RB Media for the audiobook copy to review. Narrated by Victoria Villareal, Robb Moreira, and Frankie Corzo. It was a great performance all together, but I most enjoyed the accent changes by Robb Moreira, they were superb! 4.5⭐️

I received a free digital ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I haven't read Familia or any other of Rico's previous novels, so this was my first experience of her writing. The book is told from multiple character perspectives, starting with Emilia, the wife of the man who goes missing. When the book shifted after several chapters to her daughter's perspective, many decades later, I realized that despite being a thriller, there was no tautness achieved. I wasn't "missing" Emilia, and knew barely anything about her missing husband. I was actually growing somewhat bored, hardly flipping the pages to see what came next - so this was a did not finish for me.

AFTER THE OCEAN by Lauren E. Rico

Thank you to NetGalley and RBmedia for the audiobook of After the Ocean

Narrated by Victoria Villareal, Robb Moreira, Frankie Corzo who did a fine job of making this book so enjoyable and come to life.

A compelling multi-layered read that brings Emily Oliver’s past reeling back after answering a phone call claiming—-Paul may be alive. Thirty years ago Emily Oliver was, Emilia Oliveras, and a newlywed on a honeymoon cruise, when her husband Paul disappeared. Emily now has two grown daughters and her second marriage has failed due to the secrets of her past. Emily decides to go to Puerto Rico to find answers she has always needed. Her daughters, unbeknownst to Emily, have also traveled to Puerto Rico. Shocked to find their mother isn’t the woman they thought she was and how much of their lives have been a lie.

This is my first read from this author and I look forward to reading more from her. I thought the writing was good and I was engaged in the story from the beginning. Touching upon love, relationships, heartbreak, family drama, mysteries, secrets, and redemption.

I don’t know what I expected going into this novel, but I didn’t expect to love it as much as I did. I loved the story that spanned decades, the characters, the love, and the redemption. The multiple pov and different timelines through the story created so many layers for me, and I was invested from the very first chapter. I rotated reading and listening to the audio for this one, and both are great options!

Emilia Oliveras Winstead wakes in the middle of the night on the cruise boat where she and her husband Paul are spending their honeymoon. She immediately senses that something isn't right, and soon discovers that her husband is missing.

Emilia descends into a kind of hell over the next few days. She is ill, desperately distraught over her husband's disappearance, and under suspicion by the police. She believes that she is being framed by Paul's wealthy family, who were horrified by his relationship with a poor Puerto Rican girl.

Thirty years later, Emily Oliver has built a different life in Oregon. Married again and divorced, with two adult daughters who are musically talented, just as she and Paul were. And then she receives an email containing a picture of a man who looks like Paul and is playing a cello as Paul did.

The mystery unravels on two timelines: the current timeline where Emily tries to track down her long-lost husband who may still be alive, and the 30-year-old timeline of Paul's disappearance. The truth is slowly revealed in the alternating voices of Emily, her daughter Gracie, Paul himself, the detectives who worked on the case, and Paul's brother Blaine.

This book is almost perfectly plotted. No dumb red herrings or confusing twists and turns, just a good. solid mystery that is slowly explained and keeps the reader turning pages. And the characters are very appealing; they are allowed to grow and change. Strong themes of regret, forgiveness and redemption place this novel a cut above the average family mystery.

Emilia and Paul just got married in Florida secretly. Emilia's mother is a murderer and in jail for the rest of her life and Paul's family thinks that Emilia is just with Paul for the family wealth and company they run. So they marry and jump directly to a cruise ship to celebrate. While on the cruise, Emilia falls ill and stays behind in the room while Paul goes to explore at one of the ports. However he never shows back up in their room that night. Worried sick thinking that he was left behind at the port or has fallen overboard, Emilia sets out to find Paul. But he never turns up. When she gets his family involved, something is fishy about the way they are acting. Like they aren't even worried about Paul. Do they possibly know where he is?

When Emilia is detained in the cruise ship "jail" and treated as a suspect, she knows she has to get out of there and quick. It seems that his family is pinning Paul's disappearance on her. Luckily, she makes her way of the ship and into hiding where she finds out she is pregnant with Paul's baby. She ends up living her life for thirty years; marrying someone else and having another daughter. But Paul was always in the back of her mind. But then she gets a phone call thirty years after she ran into hiding saying that Paul maybe alive. Could he just have been in hiding this whole time? And what happened that night that he disappeared?

This was a beautifully written book. The writing was so vivid, i felt like I really was there. I loved the short chapters which helped me to slide right through the pages. This story is told through multiple POV's which gives the reader multiple layers to the story. Dual time lines from now to thirty years ago. This also was a story of how time can change people and their views. And how sometimes people deserve a second chance.

Add this to your Summer reading list my friends. It’s giving lounging in the sun with a fruit smoothie on a sweltering day vibes. Ok now about the book…

Young and in love, Emilia and Paul are celebrating their honeymoon on a Caribbean cruise… after a stop in Puerto Rico Paul is missing. Emilia is concerned and finds herself as a suspect once Paul’s wealthy family gets involved. With the help of a detective Emilia goes into hiding. 30 years later in Oregon… Emily “Emilia” receives a phone call that gives hope Paul may still be alive. She flees to see the truth and on her tail… her two daughters unaware of the man their mom hopes to find.

This was a page turner! Short, alternating POV chapters and a mystery that grabs your attention and keeps a hold of it throughout this short (288 pg) but thorough novel. While the synopsis sheds light on the main plot of the story, Lauren E. Rico also writes about mother and daughter relationships, gifted musicians and redemption.

I saw this on Aardvark as a January Bookclub pick and haven’t seen it to much on the gram yet! I’m hoping it gets some good buzz!

This book exceeded my expectations and I wish more people would read it! I was drawn to this book because I don't see many books that represent Puerto Rico and was interested in the true crime elements regarding a missing person. I appreciate it didn't indulge in darkness the way a lot of true crime does. I'd say it was character driven and explored the relationships between people in love, sisters, and a dedicated detective. I couldn't put it down once I got past the beginning (I started reading in an aiport on the way to Puerto Rico coincidentally, so I was distracted by my own accord).

I highly recommend reading this book if you are interested in the plot and would like a hopeful mystery.

This book was...so good. At one point I was sitting there, covered in chills, and just thinking wow, I need to process this a minute. Honestly, I couldn't have told you where this book was going to go next, and while it started a bit slow, once I was hooked, I couldn't stop listening. The way this resolved had me on a rollercoaster of emotions, I was furious, sad, heartbroken, angry, happy, absolutely livid, but mostly I just wanted to hug everyone (most everyone).

I wouldn't have normally picked a contemporary fiction up to read, but this audio from NetGalley was perfectly narrated and I loved it.

Devoured this book. From the first page to the last. Another example, sometimes hard to believe, but definitely occurring in our present time, that wealthy/billionaires think they can do anything. Think they can buy anything. Think they can ruin lives without a moments regret.

Having said that, the other characters were for the most part, delightful. I loved the sibling rivalry between Gracie and Meg and their reconciliation. The love story is unique between Emily and Paul, and the struggle to claim their soulmates is sometimes, a little hard to believe, but I believeit. That’s what fiction is.

The title of the book is a little strange, “after the ocean,”the ocean plays such a minor role in the book that I definitely would have come up with something more meaningful if I were the author, but minor, minor detractor.

Five truly earned stars.🎉

Thank you to NetGalley for providing an audiobook in exchange for an honest review.
I absolutely loved After the Ocean! While the book begins with the mystery of Paul’s disappearance from his honeymoon cruise 30 years ago, the heart of the story focuses on the complex dynamics of family and the healing power of forgiveness. As various characters come to terms with their past, the novel delves into themes of loss, guilt, and reconciliation in such a poignant way.
The multi-POV narration was masterfully done. Each narrator brought a distinct voice and perspective to the story, which deepened my connection to the characters. I found that it really enhanced the experience, allowing me to feel more immersed in the emotional journeys of each character. I could not stop listening and finished the audiobook in just over 24 hours!
If you’re not an audiobook fan, I also think this would make for a fantastic beach or vacation read. The pace is quick, and the story pulls you in from the very first page. Highly recommended for anyone looking for an engaging, emotionally resonant read.
