The small Oregon town of Mountain Valley seems like the perfect place to safely raise a family, away from the dangers of the big city. Vanessa’s parents think so, until the day their fourteen-year-old daughter doesn’t come home for dinner. They call her cell. Straight to voice mail. They call her friends. Nothing.
An attendant at the local gas station mentions seeing a girl fitting Vanessa’s description getting into a pick-up truck that he thinks belongs to one of the Spanglers. Everyone knows the Spanglers—the richest, most influential family for miles around.
Patriarch Milton Spangler offers a $50,000 reward, determined to quash any notion that his family might be involved. But as search parties fail to yield any clues, another young woman goes missing. Are these simply disillusioned runaways[CC1] ? Or does the Spangler family have something to hide?
Myra Rutledge has honed her instincts over scores of missions, and the news stories about missing young women set her internal alarms ringing, especially when it involved her old friend, Milton Spangler. . She shares her concerns with other women of the Sisterhood, and they agree to look into the goings-on in Mountain Valley. But a small town like this can have deep secrets, especially when one family holds so much power.

Fern Michaels isn’t a person. I’m not sure she’s an entity either since an entity is something with separate existence. Fern Michaels® is what I DO. Me, Mary Ruth Kuczkir. Growing up in Hastings, Pennsylvania, I was called Ruth. I became Mary when I entered the business world where first names were the order of the day. To this day, family and friends call me Dink, a name my father gave me when I was born because according to him I was ‘a dinky little thing’ weighing in at four and a half pounds. However, I answer to Fern since people are more comfortable with a name they can pronounce.
As they say, the past is prologue. I grew up, got a job, got married, had five kids. When my youngest went off to Kindergarten, my husband told me to get off my ass and get a job. Those were his exact words. I didn’t know how to do anything except be a wife and mother. I was also a voracious reader having cut my teeth on The Bobbsey Twins, Nancy Drew, The Hardy Boys, Cherry Ames and the like. The library was a magical place for me. It still is to this day. Rather than face the outside world with no skills, I decided to write a book. For some reason that didn’t intimidate me. As my husband said at the time, stupid is as stupid does. Guess what, I don’t have that husband any more. Guess what else! I wrote 99 books, most of them New York Times Best Sellers.
Moving right along here . . . Several years ago I left Ballantine Books, parted company with my agent, sold my house in New Jersey that I had lived in all my married life and in 1993 moved to South Carolina. I figured if I was going to go through trauma let it be all at one time. It was a breeze. The kids were all on their own at that point. The dump was a 300 year old plantation house that is listed in the National Registry that I remodeled. Today it is beyond belief as are the gardens and the equally old Angel Oaks that drip Spanish moss. Unfortunately, I could not get my ghost to relocate. This ghost has been documented by previous owners. Mary Margaret as we call her, is “a friendly”. She is also mischievous. It took me two weeks to figure out that she didn’t like my coffee cups. They would slide off the table or counter or else they’d break in the dishwasher. I bought red checkered ones. All are intact as of this writing. She moves pillows from one room to the other and she stops all the clocks in the house at 9:10 in the a.m. at least once a week. When the Azaleas are in bloom, and only then, I find blooms on my night stand. I have this glorious front porch and during the warm months I see my swing moving early in the morning when the air is still and again late in the day. She doesn’t spook the dogs. I always know when she’s around because the five of them line up and look like they’re at a tennis match. As of this writing we’re co-habiting nicely.
Most writers love what they do and I’m no exception. I love it when I get a germ of an idea and get it down on paper. I love breathing life into my characters. I love writing about women who persevere and prevail because that’s what I had to do to get to this point in time. It’s another way of saying it doesn’t matter where you’ve been, what matters is where you’re going and how you get there. The day I finally prevailed was the day I was inducted into the New Jersey Literary Hall of Fame. For me it was an awesome day and there are no words to describe it. I’ve been telling stories and scribbling for 37 years. I hope I can continue for another 37 years. It wasn’t easy during some of those years. As I said, I had to persevere. My old Polish grandmother said something to me when I was little that I never forgot. She said when God is good to you, you have to give back. For a while I didn’t know how to do that. When I finally figured it out I set up The Fern Michaels® Foundation.
Milton calls in reinforcements when women in his town are missing. He calls an ex girlfriend who unbeknownst to him is part of the sisterhood. What they find is eye opening in this small town. I enjoyed this book.
Didn’t realize this book was part of a long running series. Has very high ratings, likely fueled by fans of the series, but I didn’t enjoy the writing style or the convoluted and predictable plot. Unlikely coincidences galore! Do not recommend.
Another great sisterhood justice book. In Oregon a young girl goes missing, last seen getting into a pickup truck. The truck had SEI on the door and Milton Spangler the owner offers a $50,000 reward. He calls Myra an old friend after he has a heart attack and her and Anne fly to Oregon to find out what is going on. Milton had found some strange things in his books at the corporation and wants the ladies to find out what is going on in town. It looks like another is now missing and she worked for the SEI group. There is a lot to investigate so the girls are hot on the trail. I just love the twist and turns of these books and seeing when they have to pay for their wrongdoing.
The Sisters are back! This is a "limited" edition as there are only a few of the Sisters involved in this "case". Old friendships, new characters (from another Fern Michaels series), a dog, and many unexpected surprises! While this story was a bit slow at the beginning, the last third more than made up for it! Many surprises at the end, plus the Sister's own form of vengeance makes for an enjoyable read! 8 out of 10
Thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this story early and give my honest review!
I did enjoy this book but it was a little slow getting going. However, once it got going it was good.
One would think a small town would be the perfect place to live and raise your children. But that all changes one day when a young woman ever comes home. The search begins and it leads to someone seeing what is believed her getting in the vehicle of one of the richest families in the area Only time will tell how this action packed story plays out.
Myra receives a call from an old friend so she and Annie fly out to Oregon. They also have some of the sisterhood join them. They are not sure what is going on but two young women are missing so the investigation starts there. The book was an easy read.
Fern Michaels has such a unique and interesting story telling voice that you are swept up in the story and pulled along with the tough as nails ladies as they find justice again. It has been awhile since I read a Sisterhood book but I was immediately pulled back into the group like no time had passed. The characters are flawed and tough and real and more than a little bad a**. The characters, in particular Myra and Annie, are the heart or the center and the center always holds. This story was a little bit different, at least in my opinion, from the typical Sisterhood fare as we got more backstory on the Spanglers who were at the very integral to this story. They bad men were even different in this story, I don't think they were inherently bad but they were simply pulled along but their own desires and from there trouble just kept escatating. We watched the wheels come off the entire criminal enterprise with more than a few nudges from our ladies. You absolutely had to keep turning the pages as each page brought a new and exciting reveal that furthered the story. The book was full of action and antics and family and rhinestone cowboy boots. We even got a bit of a cross over in this story with both a call out and a visit from a character from the Lost and Found story. I loved how he walked the line between good cop and vigilante with aplomb and got caught up in the story. To round out the story, we had a wonderful dog and dogs only add to any story. In this book, even the dog was multifaceted going from emotional support to fierce protector. I am definitely going to go back and catch up on the missed Sisterhood and Lost and Found books. Fern Michaels writes books that remind readers why they enjoy reading. Thanks to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing for the opportunity to read this ARC.
I love Myra and Annie, their friendship, their cunning and even their sneakiness. They work well together and play to each other’s strengths. They may appear to be uber rich socialites with too much time on their hands and impulsive tendencies but these ladies lead a highly skilled and very experienced group of women, the Sisterhood, who work together to seek justice and vengeance for those unable to so for themselves.
When Vanessa, a young fourteen year old girl goes missing in Mountain Valley. Rumours and speculation suggest a powerful and rich local family are involved and that Backwater Justice has made sure that any investigation goes away. This is not the first young girl to go missing in the area or to be tied to a company owned by Milton Spangler, an old friend of Myra. The ladies decide it is time to do their own investigating into this matter. The first order of busines is to investigate the Spangler family and their businesses. What they discover is a web of lies, deceit, corruption and betrayal. As they delve into this investigation, each woman uses their unique skills and experience to gain information while not causing undue attention to themselves . They blend in a rather than stand out, with the exception of Annie. She uses her flamboyance, wealth and irrepressible charm to gain information, though she is not above being sneaky or picking a lock.
This book is suspenseful, intriguing and twisty. It is also rather entertaining due to the behind the scene machinations of the sisterhood as well as the muddled and chaotic thoughts of the criminals they seek. I highly recommend this compelling book and all of Sisterhood books.
Myra, Annie and the rest of the Sisterhood flies to a small community, Mountain Valley, OR, when a good friend, Milton Spangler's wife Patricia calls to tell them he has had a heart attack and wants to speak to them. They will set up their regular investigatory group as they try to determine what caused the heart attack, which the doctor cannot determine, and what seems to be going on in the company. Milton thinks that drugs are being smuggled through the company and that his son Oliver is possibly involved.
The book provides a description of the development of the company to the size currently. It gives the background of Oliver who is a playboy who is unable to live within his considerable means and turns to first smuggling drugs from Mexico to Canada, when he meets Ernesto Calavera and makes a deal. When Ernesto realizes that the Feds are getting too close and he bails, Oliver makes a new deal for money for equipment to manufacture and distribute drugs with Ernesto sharing in the profits.
A teenager, hitching to a party her parents know nothing of, disappears; and then a second Indigenous woman disappears from the Cascade Inn in Eugene. The young girl, Vanessa Rowan, decides that a pickup with the SEI logo is safe and gets in only to get attacked and kidnapped when she sees the bags of pills that tears in the truck. Lorraine George, a new recruit working on her college degree in hospitality has taken a job cleaning the Cascade Inn. She is searching for cleaning products when she opens a door that is secret but has been left slightly open, and she is kidnapped and taken to one of the secret rooms in the inns where they have the drugs. Vanessa soon escapes and the Sisterhood connect at the hospital a couple has taken her to. They will later rescue Lorraine from a cabin that Oliver gets Bart to move her to.
They will determine that Patricia poisoned Milton's drink. She was always protecting Oliver and wanted only to make him ill so he would stop looking into Oliver's activities.
Lightweight but a fun quick read. I remember reading the early installments of this series and the solutions that this group comes up with to punish the bad guys was ingenious and perfect fits for the things they do, if jaw-dropping at times.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
Another fun cozy mystery series featuring a group of female rescue investigators. THE SISTERHOOD has a large cast of characters with a list of their names and roles in front of this story. Their useful husbands are drawn into their adventures also. They all have to be be dog-lovers to join this group so a dog gets involved too. It gets a bit corny, but likable characters, good story, fast-paced with some unexpected surprises for all.
MYRA RUTLEDGE goes to a small Oregon town of Mountain Valley. I’m reading because my childhood was in a small Oregon town with a lumber mill and nearby mountains. My mother’s name was Helen, so there’s enough for me to relate to? Except for rumors being a favorite pastime, that’s where the similarities stop. Fun to recognize cities in this story.
We open with the Milton Spangler family, their local lumber mill that expanded at a profitible pace with each generation. This sets the stage for soon-to-come rumors of how they handle the disappearance of teenager VANESSA ROWAN. When others are known to have disappeared, Myra gathers her Sisterhood to investigate because Milton Spangler is her long-time friend (with benefits?).
BENJAMIN SPANGLER is like MILTON his father, therefore the good son; a generation apart from his younger brother OLIVER—who is the opposite of Benjamin—as a result of his forever-doting mother who was raised spoiled and entitled by her rich political parents. Even Ben covers for him. His general reputation is that his behavior is bad and expected to be ignored. He’ll get the company in the pubic eye in the worst way. This will change several lives, not all for the better, but well-deserved justice.
The Sisters are back again. This time, when an old flame of Myra's calls her right after he had an unexpected heart attack, both Myra and Annie fly out to Oregon to investigate.
Milton built the lumber business after his own father died in an accident in the same factory. He was always book smart, especially when it came to numbers. He worked his way up the ladder and eventually bought out the company himself. He married a daughter of a Senator, Patricia, that he met once in Washington D.C it wasn't a love match, but it worked well for them. They had two boys, Benjamin and Oliver.
Patricia wasn't the maternal type with Benjamin, but when Oliver was born she changed her tune fast; doting on his every need. Benjamin always loved going to work with his dad and after college he took over one part of the company. Whereas Oliver used their family name to get what he wanted. Until his partying ways caught up to him and he was forced to work for his father as well.
Right before Milton had his heart attack, he was going to sit down both of his sons and talk about invoices that were much overcharged. Now sitting in a hospital bed, he doesn't know who to trust other than Myra and Annie. While this is going on two girls we're kidnapped near the factory.
Myra has Izzie, and Kathryn fly out to Oregon to do some recon. While Charles and Fergus are back at Pinewood in the war room working from their end. What they find out is shocking!
A definite must read!!
*I received a complimentary copy of this book via NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This is book 36 in the Sisterhood series. I have read a few but not all of the books. I think I'm getting a little tired of the woman going missing in small communities theme but I did enjoy catching up with all the returning characters. Nothing. The Sisterhood returns to rescue women who are kidnapped by a group of men who feel their jobs with Spangler Enterprises do not pay enough. Unbeknown to the owner, Milton Spangler, thinks the very best of his staff. His company has grown to great wealth in Mountain Valley, Oregon. Lately there have been young women kidnapped by these men. The girls come to the inns to work when one is the picked up. It always appears innocent until they are given drugs, knocked out and taken to the laundry area of one of the innś basements. Budgets seem to lose track of the rightful few who are at the ends of why things go wrong. The Sisterhood is called in to help solve the problem. Backwater Justice will be published on December 24, 2024 by Zebra Books of Kensington Publishing Corp. I was able to read Michaelś´s latest novel via NetGalley. Those who have read the Sisterhood series will welcome #36. If you have not read other feature books in the series Michaels makes the story clear newcomers are at ease when reading one of her works. This is my first and I found it entertaining and a welcome addition to my reading network. Hope you enjoy it as well.
This is the first book I have read following The Sisterhood and I really enjoyed it. The Sisterhood is a group of, it appears, well-to-do women who have suffered an injustice, or know someone who has been the victim of an injustice and they gather to set the injustice right. The reading was light and fun, and the characters are defined enough that the reader can be brought to laugh out loud visualizing one or more as they interact. The Sisterhood, in this book, are out to set a wrong right but to do so they have to solve several mysteries. There have been two kidnappings of young women in the same area and appearing to be connected to a large local employer. This is one of the mysteries. Then mystery number two, the owner of that local company suffers a heart attack that isn't a heart attack. Three of the companies new expansions have cost well over budget with things like large, steel, bullet-proof doors and a couple of other things--why?: mystery number three. These are simple things and the reader pretty much knows who, what, when, where, and why. The fun comes in "watching" the Sisterhood solve the mysteries and make everything right for all the wronged people. I enjoyed this book enough that I will look for other stories of the Sisterhood.
The Sisterhood is a group of women who are bound by friendship and years of adventures. They have a vast network of allies, expertise and contacts around the world to assist the Sisterhood in making every wrong right. In a small town in Oregon Milton Spangler and his sons run Spangler Enterprises. A 14 year old girl has gone missing and even though Milton Spangler offers a large reward no information is obtained and there is speculation do the Spangler’s have something to hide. Myra hears the stories of the missing girl and she talks to the other women in the Sisterhood and they agree to look into the case. Myra also gets a call from Milton’s wife that Milton has had a heart attack and he wants to talk to her. Myra and Annie head to Oregon and the adventure begins. This is a very good, fast reading book. I liked the information on each of the women in the Sisterhood at the beginning of the book, it gave me a nice background on them and since this was my first book it really helped. I liked how the women worked together and got results. I liked how Myra’s and Annie’s husbands were supportive and assisted them in their adventure. I would definitely read more books by this author and this series.
4.5 stars. This revolves around two brothers, Benjamin and Oliver Spangler, who grew up in a wealthy logging and mill family in Oregon. And the brothers couldn't have been more different. Benjamin was basically raised by his father, spent days at the millworks, and enthusiastically learned the business from the inside out. Born nine years later, and with his father consumed with his management of the mill and logging operations, Oliver was effectively raised by his mother, who spoiled and coddled him to the point that he found work of any kind intolerable. When his father eventually brought him into the family business, Oliver was resentful and found his earnings far below his needs, which mostly revolved around women, fast cars, and alcohol. He eventually turned to embezzlement and drug smuggling to line his pockets. His father knew he was going wrong, but when a young girl goes missing near one of their business trucks, things come to a head and he calls an old friend for help. And then another girl goes missing... A fast, fun read!
Mystery, excitement, intrigue and a duo that rights every wrong - with the help from the sisterhood, Fern Michaels writes a story that will keep you entertained from the first sentence to the last and everything in between!! In the Sisterhood series, Myra Rutledge and Countess Annie de Silvia are the duo that are an absolute hoot and the kindest to the helpless and those in need but can be the most ruthless women you have ever met! In Backwater Justice a dear friend of Myra's, who just suffered a painful heart attack, Milt calls on his old friend for help. Not one to ever let a friend down, Myra calls her life long pal Annie to travel along to see why Milt asks for her help. What they find is one of the Sisterhood's very perplexing cases. With help from their husbands and a few of the girls from the Sisterhood they carefully put together clues to one of the most lethal problems facing our nation today. Only Fern Michael's can tell this story in a way that you won't want to put this book down. Happy Reading!!!
Thank you to Netgalley Kensington Books for letting me have a copy of #backwaterjustice to review. This is book 36 in her Sisterhood series. I have not read any of the other books in that series. While this is definitely readable without having read any of the others there were several times I felt a bit lost trying to wade through the references and history presented. This was a bit of a short book for the content, it felt like everything wrapped up a bit too quick. That being said it was a neat story, I just wanted a bit higher stakes. In a small Oregon town two young women have gone missing. Both disappearances have been linked to the Spangler family’s business. When the patriarch suffers a heart attack he has an old friend, who he thinks can help uncover what is really going on in his family, called for. Myra will answer the call and bring with her all the help she can use to find the missing girls.
In this latest Sisterhood case, a young girl goes missing after she was seen getting into a company truck for SEI. And even though the family that owns the company has offered a reward, questions remain as to whether or not they are involved. After all, they do exert a lot of control in Mountain Valley. Then there's the fact that the cops don't seem too interested in investigating her disappearance.
When the patriarch of the family suffers a heart attack, he asks his wife to contact his longtime friend, Myra. Thus, the Sisterhood gets involved in the case. There are obviously some shenanigans going on as some people appear to be agitated for no apparent reason. This turns out not to be a simple case but one where there are multiple mysteries that will come to light with some surprising twists.
As a longtime fan of the Sisterhood series, this most recent one did not disappoint. The setting was Oregon and the Pacific Northwest. Milton owned several profitable businesses but suffered a heart attack. Myra was a friend from long ago, so he called her to come and help unravel issues he was seeing, most specifically the disappearance of a couple of young women. As it turned out, his "son" Oliver was involved in producing and distributing pills in order to finance his lavish lifestyle. The group, which included Annie, Myra, Lizzie, Kathryn, and several folks from Avery's team, unraveled a complicated plot which not only involved Oliver and his accomplices, but also his mother, Patricia. The unraveling and movement of the story made this a book that was impossible to put down. Waiting for the next book in this author's series.
finished 17th june 2025 good read three stars i liked it no more no less kindle library loaner sisterhood book 36 and i thought i saw there are 60-some titles to this series? entertaining story about a family in the pacific northwest story opens and begins to cover the relatively long life of one of that family and the success they have had, lumber, trucking, the hotel industry...until one of the offspring begins to find trouble. kidnappings, attempted murder, drug manufacture and distribution. and by story end, we get a look at a new kind of "frontier justice"...and it isn't really explained in detail but that's what it is, big time. i'm guessing that other stories in the series defines it as this telling suggests it is a tried-and-true result of the sisterhood's actions and associates.
Although it appears that this series is coming to an end, it has been a fun ride reading all these books. This book contains just a small amount of the sisterhood and a few make a page or so appearance which gives me the impression that the series is concluding. If it is not at the end, the author may be taking a page from some series on tv that the last season or two were looked upon as those who loved the series should never had been done. That being said, a final book putting all the characters back together and sending them on to their happy future would be a great finale. Of course this is only the opinion of this reader. Thank you for a wonderful series.
The new format of the Sisterhood novels makes for great reading, but I have to admit that I miss the large scale chaotic camaraderie of the old style books. Where are Ted and Dennis and HARRY?? (for goodness sake, the description of Yoko didn't even mention that she is married to Harry!!)
I feel like these new style books are written more for new readers of the series, while ignoring some of the history that long-time readers would miss.
And I have to ask again, what the heck happened to Cyrus? Jack and Nikki came over to pinewood for dinner at the beginning of this novel and much mention was made of Lady and her pups.. But wouldn't they have brought Cyrus? did Ms. Michaels forget about him????
I love all things Fern Michaels and this does not disappoint!! The sisterhood series is my favorite. We are now in the Pacific Northwest, Oregon; where one girl then two go missing. Montana Valley is supposed to be a quiet safe town, but is it really? Milton Spangler has grown his lumber business into so much more, his two sons Benjamin and Oliver help him run his business now. Myra is an old friend of Milton's and asks her for help. Can Myra and her group of friends help him? Love the plot, great setting, and strong intense interesting characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Fern Michaels!!!
Thoroughly enjoyed this book. It's a series though so took a minute to figure out who is who though there is an outline in the Prologue of who is who. Now of course since this was book 36 of the series I want to go back and start at the beginning and work my way up LOL.
Two mission girls in a short amount of time, mysterious purchases during hotel construction projects bring head of the Spangler's Corporations concern and he calls his good friend Myra to help him find out what is happening. The story twists and turns as the Sisterhood gathers intel and helps solve the mystery in in a small Oregon town.
Backwater Justice, the latest in the Sisterhood series by Fern Michaels, is a non-stop thrill ride of a book that sweeps the reader relentlessly through events with a sense of urgency that continues right to the end. Michaels' superb writing style provides suspense and thrills as the Sisterhood once again pursues its own brand of justice in the face of official blind eyes and entitled behaviour. This book is escapism at its purist form, and a fun way to spend a few hours. Thank you for the ARC of #BackwaterJustice to #NetGalley.
The sisterhood characters are so well defined and each entertaining, funny and scary when they get their bad guys. When Myra & Annie are teamed up and leading the charge on a mission their is bound to be a lot of laughs at what kind of trouble Annie can get her and Myra into. This story had so many different "missions" more than I think was planned for but all lead to the same core people. Loved this addition to one of the best series. Cannot wait for the next sisterhood or men of the sisterhood. Love all of the characters.
I’ve read all of the Sisterhood series, and it did seem like a l-o-n-g wait since #35. But this one was well worth the wait! There was plenty of action, just the right level of suspense, and “tolerable” violence. (I have thought the vindictive punishments a bit too harsh and graphic — albeit thoroughly deserved — in some earlier episodes.) It was also refreshing and satisfying that I noted not a single incident of sloppy editing/proofreading, a major pet peeve of mine in Kindle books. How long before #37? I hope sooner than two years!
