What Became of Miss Mary King Miss Mary King was whisked away to Liverpool by her uncle, thus escaping the clutches of Mr. Wickham. What became of the heiress once removed from the fortune-hunting cad that wished to marry her? In Liverpool, she struggles with sadness and regret, battling the memories of what occurred in Meryton and resenting the fortune that made her so gullible a target for the charming rogue that stole her heart. This story completes Mary’s saga as she learns to trust and love again.
At First Slight What happens when an angry fairy takes offense to Mr. Darcy’s insult of one of his favorite mortals? Eros and his bride, Psyche, have singular unite mortals who harbor the potential to love one another and see them off to their happily ever afters. Their magic draws them to the crucial moments when potential lovers cross paths and guides them as they aid the couples. But what happens when Eros is angered by Mr. Darcy’s cruel words to Elizabeth? He takes matters into his own hands, and one impulsive decision sends things spinning wildly out of control. After his brash decision, he and Psyche must endeavor to correct his errant course before Elizabeth and Darcy forever lose their chance for a happy ending.
A Change of Outcomes What would happen if Lydia Bennet, while snooping in her sister’s room, discovered Lizzy’s letter from Darcy before going to Brighton? How would her perception of Mr. Wickham’s attentions change? Lydia goes to Brighton with eyes wide open, and instead of falling for Mr. Wickham’s charm, chooses a steadier path. Her friendship with Harriet Forster takes a different turn, and she sees life and marriage in an entirely new way. But Mr. Wickham seems determined to win her good opinion, much to Lydia’s vexation. Will she get her own happy ending, or will she remain the vapid, foolish child she has always been?
Each one is different and enjoyable on its own. Together a lovely compilation...
This author has made her mark offering us stories on the lesser stories of Jane Austen's world. Her writing is enjoyable and brings to life a fuller, well rounded life for each of the minor characters. This book, comprised of three novellas, is no less charming and I found myself rooting for the hero/heroine, even if I didn't like them.
1. Mary King is saved by her uncle from Wickham. Her life in Liverpool is described, including recuperation from her heartbreak. A 2nd chance at falling in love is maneuvered, but this time to a good guy.
2. Eros, a fairy tries to right Darcy's insult, but complicates things instead. Eros and his wife Psyche are adorable. There are snippets alluding to other Jane Austen characters, very cleverly done. I probably would have loved this one if it hadn't followed all of canon. It's magic, its OK to shake the story line up. But still, the author makes it work.
3. I am not a Lydia fan, but this was a sweet, coming of age story of the youngest Bennet. She learns shocking news right before her departure to Brighton which makes her rethink almost everything about herself and beaux. And what she really wants for herself in a marriage. Not quite the silliest girl in England.
A truly enjoyable read.

A well-written novella can convey a great deal in a short amount of pages. I have greatly enjoyed some of MJ Stratton's novels so I was eager to peruse Crossroads, a novella collection set in the Pride and Prejudice world.
There are three novellas: one is a side-story paralleling the events of P&P for Mary King, one a gaslamp fantasy variation for Mr. Darcy, and the third a variation featuring Lydia Bennet.
What Became of Miss Mary King Beginning with Mary's becoming an heiress and Wickham's smarmy courting her inheritance, Mary's shrewd businessman uncle, Josiah King, brings her to Bristol for her to heal and get over Wickham. His solution is to tempt her with his honorable, gentlemanly young business partner, Mr. Richardson. Mary shoves him into the friend category, but slowly the wounds from Wickham heal and Antony Richardson and his family fill her thoughts.
I enjoyed this heartwarming, reflective story of healing love.
At First Slight
A gaslamp fantasy involving two Greek gods who are connected love and the matchmaking. Eros takes exception to Fitzwilliam Darcy's slight against Elizabeth Bennet and interferes by hitting him with a love dart and her with a doubt dart to punish Darcy with a harder chance at winning his love. A romp of a tale ensues when the husband and wife pair of gods have their work cut out for them getting the human pair together.
This was high entertainment watching keep events of P&P unfold as part of the gods' plans.
A Change of Outcomes And, the best for last to me was Lydia's variation story. In the timeline of the original story, this one begins just before Lydia is going off to Brighton with her friend, Mrs. Harriet Forrester. Lydia is pilfering loose ribbon from her sisters' rooms when she comes across Darcy's letter to Lizzy. She is shocked at what the proud man says about Wickham and disbelieving. But, it sticks with her and forces her to observe the man in light of Darcy's reveals about his character. Wickham isn't the only one she notices with sketchy actions. And, then there is her own long moments of thought. For the first time in her life, Lydia puts her mind to something beyond shallow frivolity. She thinks hard about what sort of man she wants to have court her and eventually marry and what sort of person she really wants to be. She casts her mind back to what everyone from her own family and throughout the neighborhood including Mr. Darcy in his letter say about her. Can she really change her ways? Does she want to?
Loved seeing Lydia mature over her time in Brighton and what decisions she makes.
And, so Crossroads was full of a good variety of stories set in the P&P world. Well-developed and engaging. Definitely would enjoy reading more of MJ Stratton's writing.
This was a delightful collection of three novellas that I thoroughly enjoyed.
What Became of Miss Mary King – 4* “And then Lieutenant George Wickham presented himself to her, and with careful flattery, tempted her away from all others. His words awoke in her the tender feelings of first love and she soon found herself engaged.” (quote from the book)
I always did wonder what happened to Miss Mary King, and Ms. Stratton has taken this secondary character and breathed new life into her. What is a fortune if one’s heart is broken?
“…the lure of a man who was not interested in her fortune was great.” (quote from the book)
At First Slight – 4* “Eros thought love ought to be the only reason someone would choose to marry.” (quote from the book)
Eros, Psyche, aura and a bit of magic!
This was a fun and interesting Fae tale in which the events of Pride and Prejudice and minor mention of other Austen novels have been 'touched' by the Fae, Eros and Psyche. What happens when Eros is angered by Mr. Darcy’s insult to Elizabeth Bennet?
“I have done nothing wrong…The effects are temporary. Darcy is now on his way toward loving Elizabeth; I see no reason to make his path to happy ever after easy.” (quote from the book)
A Change of Outcomes – 5* “She did not like the serious nature of her thoughts these days; she would much rather be jolly and merry and have not a care in the world than to think about things like consequences of behavior.” (quote from the book)
Oh, I do love a redemption story and especially one of Lydia Bennet! In Lydia’s search for a particular ribbon of Elizabeth’s, she finds Mr. Darcy’s letter. What impact will this have while she is in Brighton with Mrs. Harriet Forster?
“The rose-colored life she once knew was now tinged with gray. Doubt and suspicion reigned where she wished for innocence and light.” (quote from the book)
So, if you are busy and need a short quick fix of austenesque stories, I highly recommend this collection!

Collections brings together three novellas by MJ Stratton What Became of Miss Mary King - in which we follow Mary to Liverpool, as she slowly recovers from her encounter with Mr Wickham. It is a delight to watch her build a new life and perhaps find love.
This was really pleasing!
At First Slight - in which Eros and Psyche have less than stellar success in encouraging romance between Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy.
A Change of Outcomes - in which Lydia Bennet reads her sister's mail. Fitzwilliam Darcy's famous letter to Elizabeth, details just how bad George Wickham really is. Initially, Lydia dismisses it as lies, but slowly she begins to acknowledge the truth. Her trip to Brighton gives Lydia, opportunities to re-evaluate her views on men and her own sense of self worth.
This stands out as the best novella in the anthology. I definitely recommend!

These are delightful alternate perspectives to P&P. What Became of Miss Mary King 4.5* I really enjoyed this. There are less than a handful variations centering on Mary King - no need for more now that we have this. Minus 1/2 a star for liking cats over dogs (just kidding ... not kidding ... as I sit reading this on a rainy day with my dog curled up next to me). I can imagine Wickham saying what he did as he departed (quoting Lydia.. or perhaps Lydia was quoting him in canon?). Makes me that is quite plausible (she says of a fictional JA P&P) and that JA's version has quite a hole in it regarding how Wickham wasn't found out in Meryton regarding outstanding debts (whether or not Mr King uncovered them before whisking Miss King away). Very well done.
At First Slight 4* That was amusing. Eros and Psyche being at fault for the hash made of ODCs journey - which follows canon. (Really just a stand in for JA). Ironic that Eros's impulsiveness and overconfidence in his own judgment matches that of his favourite - Elizabeth.
A Change of Outcomes 4.5* 4.5 stars for putting me very convincingly inside the head of a 16 yo girl. Minus 1/2 star for it being Lydia Bennet's 16 yo head ;) She certainly did have a hard road to sensibility, but she did triumph in the end. Again well done, also leaving me thankful that those years are far far behind me.

3 Stories of different P&P Characters Mixed emotions for me as the first story was about Mary King, a pretty minor P & P character. It was nicely written and had some good insights regarding true love and growing up, but I am not really a Mary King aficionado - so 4 stars. Second story was a restatement of canon from the point of view of the gods/fairies Psyche and Eros as magical meddlers in human romance and didn't really strike me - so 3 stars. Third story was a very good "Redemption of Lydia" theme, with excellent dialogue and insights - so 4.5 stars. Overall good Austenesque writing, and this author does not disappoint. I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving my honest review.
I really enjoyed reading A Change of Outcomes, one of the three stories in this book. As silly Lydia uncaringly crows about her great fortune and prepares for her trip to Brighton, she stumbles upon THE LETTER. The author weaves a very plausible tale of a callous girl gradually maturing into one who can no longer be called silly. Although this story is short, it is well-written and Ms Stratton is able to show Lydia's growth charmingly in parallel to another who is stagnant. I would be happy if this story was extended into a full novella.

I enjoyed Mary King’s story, didn’t bother with story 2, and loved Lydia’s journey to maturity. I wish more authors would change Lydia’s (and others) storyline. They are vagaries after all and I get bored reading the same old all the time. This reader loves it when an author makes a bold move and changes things from canon. As long as the writing is good, I am there for it.
This book by the author MJ Stratton contains three short stories.
WHAT BECOMES OF MISS MARY KING? After inheriting 10.000 £ Miss Mary King becomes quickly engaged with George Wickham. But her uncle is opposed to the match and takes her to Liverpool. There Mary struggles with her broken heart and sadness threats to overwhelm her. Will she be able to find joy, happiness and love again?
I must confess I had never thought much about Mary King and her fate. I thought her silly because she was charmed by the fortune hunter Wickham. But this version of Mary King I liked very much. She is portrayed as an insecure young lady blinded by love who has the fortune of caring relatives who take her away just in time. I like her journey to know and comprehend herself and to finally allow herself to love again. It takes her long to recognize that she wants more than just friendship with the man she finally comes to love. I like the way Mary, her new surroundings and acquaintances are described and loved the story very much. Five stars out of five for this lovely story.
AT FIRST SLIGHT For centuries Eros and his bride Psyche have a purpose: recognize true love and help the future lovers on their way to happiness. Darcy and Elizabeth are destined to find happiness and love together. But then Darcy insults Elizabeth at the Meryton Assembly it is not only Elizabeth who is offended but also Eros and Psyche. The insult leads to impulsive actions on the side of Eros' setting a well known story in motion.
This short story tells the original story but explains the well known events with the interference of Eros and Psyche after Darcy's insult. This interference leads to Eros and Psyche needing to correct and guide the outcome that Darcy and Elizabeth can nevertheless find their happily ever after. The story was nice because everything was explained with Eros' and Psyche's interactions and interferences but that was all. It was nothing really new and I must confess that I was a bit disappointed. I had hoped for a change in the story due to Eros' and Psyche's interference but that was not the case. Therefore only four out of five stars for this story.
A CHANGE OF OUTCOME While scooping through Elizabeth's room Lydia discovers Darcy's letter to her sister and reads it. She can't believe what she reads but when she arrives in Brighton with her friend Harriet she finds more and more evidence for the truth of Darcy's tale. Thus she distrusts Wickham's charms and becomes better acquainted with the nice and honest Captain Carter. While Lydia and the Captain form a genuine friendship Wickham seeks a way to escape his debts. Will Lydia withstand Wickham advances and find happiness with Captain Carter instead?
I never particularly liked the spoiled child Lydia who always gets her will and does as she sees fit but I like this more mature version of her very much, she is really sympathetic. Due to reading the letter Lydia is aware of Wickham's falsehood and she is better prepared to be on her guard. I like that she becomes pensive and really thinks about what she wants in life and marriage and that is nothing Wickham can give her. This also lets her open up to genuine friendship and love. I really like that she, during her stay in Brighton, changes to a better, really likeable version of herself. And I am really glad that she finds true love and happiness in the end with a worthy man and that she is also worthy of him. Definitely five stars out of five for this lovely portrait of a really likeable Lydia.
If you like to know what happened to Mary King after leaving Meryton, how Eros and Psyche affected the relationship between Darcy and Elizabeth and how Lydia fairs in Brighton after reading Darcy's letter to Elizabeth, you should definitely read this book.
I highly recommend it.

- What Became of Miss Mary King? I never would have expected to care about what happened to Miss Mary King after her uncle whisked her away to Liverpool and saved her from the awful fate of being married to Mr. Wickham. Who knew? This story was lovely, about Mary's family in Liverpool and what happens with them after leaving Meryton. I enjoyed the story a lot as I was reading about Mary's heartbreak as she realized that she had fooled herself into believing that Wickham genuinely cared for her, rather than her inheritance - which deep, down inside she knew that was the truth, but so wanted to be in love. Once in Liverpool, her uncle introduced her to a Mr. Richardson, and at first they determined neither was ready for anything permanent, but they spent time together, discussing books and gardens. They gradually became good friends, finally leading to a happy ever after, not just for her but for the rest of her family, too.
- At First Slight This is a story of Eros and Psyche trying to get Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth together. Elizabeth is one of their favorite people, and they know that she is destined for a great love with Mr. Darcy. But when Darcy insults Elizabeth, Eros overreacts in anger, exacerbating Elizabeth's disdain of Darcy. The story follows canon, showing Eros and Psyche discussing what is happening and whispering hints and suggestions in various people's ears to try to guide things. Some of it is pretty funny, like Psyche managing to convince Darcy to propose to Elizabeth before Eros can tell her of Colonel Fitzwilliam's disclosure to Elizabeth that Darcy had persuaded Bingley to leave Jane. Oops. A very delightful story. I liked their background activities also, which had to do with other Jane Austen characters.
- A Change of Outcomes The beginning of this story was not as enjoyable to me as the others, and seemed to drag on a bit with Lydia and Mrs. Forster after they arrive in Brighton, but it picked up soon. Fortunately for Lydia, she had sneaked into Lizzy's room before leaving, looking to steal a particular ribbon, and happened to find and read Mr. Darcy's letter. Talk about surprise and shock! Especially fortunately for all, she never revealed to anyone what she read, but started watching Mr. Wickham and realized that he was very insincere, and cooled off towards him in Brighton. It was interesting to see her changes of attitude about Wickham, Mrs. Forster's suspicious behavior, and thoughts about what makes a happy marriage. Lydia is growing up! The results of that were quite different to canon of course, and the ending was a lovely HEA for Lydia.

CROSSROADS is a collection of novellas by MJ Stratton. Each story is very different, although all delightful, so I need to review them separately to do them justice.
WHAT BECAME OF MISS MARY KING? In P&P, the character of Mary King disappears from the story after her uncle sweeps her away from the clutches of George Wickham. In this story, Ms. Stratton shares an account of what happens to Miss King off canvas. I usually am not too interested in stories about the minor characters of P&P - I read JAFF for Lizzy and Darcy - but I enjoyed this story! The character development and story was well written, and I came to care about what happened to Mary and her family. It was very sweet! 4 STARS
AT FIRST SLIGHT In a creative approach to retelling P&P, Ms. Stratton introduces Eros and Psyche, a married fairy couple who bring together couples they see demonstrating the potential to fall in love. It starts out as an interesting plot device that explains why Lizzy became SO angered by Darcy’s insult at the Assembly, as well as why certain impulsive actions are taken by characters, such as Darcy proposing in an insulting manner or Lydia slipping about Darcy being at her wedding. However, it lost its luster as the story progressed, because there was no variation from the original plot at all. I was able to predict easily from halfway through the story which plot points were going to be influenced by one of the two fairies. It would have been interesting if their influence changed the story in some way. But it didn’t. Since the author chose not to go in that direction, it would have been nice to hear the outcome of the fairies’ involvement in Ann de Bourgh’s romance with a Mr. Robert Metcalfe, which is introduced about halfway through the story. However, we never find out. 3 STARS
A CHANGE OF OUTCOMES This novella focuses on my least favorite Bennet sister - Lydia - so I was wary. But it turned out to be a lovely story! While getting ready to go on her trip to Brighton, Lydia finds THE LETTER. The one written to Elizabeth by Darcy! This one, major plot change causes a domino effect of positive changes in Miss Lydia; both her character and her behavior. These changes lead to a darling love story for her with just a tiny bit of angst. I so enjoyed it! 4 STARS
Overall, CROSSROADS, is an enjoyable read and I recommend you read this delightful series of stories.

What Became of Miss Mary King? Love the story with Mary King. The unexpected fortune, the mysterious UNCLE and the sudden vanish from Meryton all makes perfect sense in the narration by the author. The live in Liverpool sounds delightful enough to me and the happy ‘endings’ is just what we need!!
At First Slight This is essentially the SAME Pride and prejudice with continual introduction and explanation by two faes. The plot is identical to canon. I had been expecting some twists but found none.
A Change of Outcomes The development of the brain of Miss Lydia Bennet. As we all know Lydia and Kitty are as silly as their father declared, the story offers her a chance of salvation. Although the realization is a continual process step by step, I believe that a basic understanding should have always been present to support this transformation.
This is a collection of three very good P&P variation novellas.
Whatever Happened to Mary King
Mary is saved by her uncle from Wickham and goes to live with her uncle in Liverpool. She is broken hearted, not least because her wealth makes her the target of dissolute fortune hunters. It is delightful to see her build a new life and come to recognize a good man.
A Change of Outcomes
When Lydia first reads Darcy's words about Wickham, she doesn't want to believe them. But it causes her to observe Wickham closely and to begin thinking more seriously about what she wants in a husband. I enjoyed seeing Lydia continue to think more deeply than in the past, becoming a sensible, caring young lady.
At First Slight
Eros and Psyche are two fairies who assist mortals to fall in love where there is already a strong inclination. Their initial attempts with D&E are more of a hindrance than help. We see the events and characters of Pride and Prejudice through their eyes.
Crossroads contains three short novellas: first, a speculation on Mary King's continued story; second, a close-to-canon fantasy offering of how the fae influenced the lives and decisions of ODC and other familiar characters; and third, a what-if variation of the Brighton trip starring Lydia that leads to a brighter future for this most-selfish Bennet daughter. Very imaginative and creative. I enjoyed the first and third stories the most--especially the hero in the first story styled in the mold of a somewhat rumpled John Thornton (North and South). All stories are clean and low angst. Well done. I can highly recommend this book and look forward to more from this author. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Crossroads is a collection of 3 short stories in the Pride and Prejudice world that's entertaining and delightful!
What Became of Miss Mary King
Mary King's life had been much simpler before she had inherited thousand pounds ... and attracted fortune hunters. Mary's uncle spirits her away to Liverpool and plays matchmaker.
At First Slight
Eros and Psyche moved among the mortals, guiding them in their quest for love. When Darcy insults Elizabeth, who's a particular favorite of Eros, Eros decides to teach Darcy a lesson!
A Change of Outcomes
Lydia Bennet's snooping and meddling leads to a letter containing distressing information about her beloved Wickham. Which leads to her thoughts being in a dreadful jumble.
I enjoyed the three stories in this anthology. Miss King found the love of her life. Darcy and Elizabeth finally made it to the alter after Psyche and Eros helped them along. However, Lydia's abandonment of Wickham's charms and her desire to get to know Captain Carter better was a most interesting story. I won this novel in a give away and have enjoyed every single word!
I very much enjoyed the continuation of Mary King’s tale as well as the different interpretation of Lydia influenced by a letter she ought not to have read. The zeros/Ps he tale was an amusing diversion. Surely in modern parlance, the love inciting pair must have longed to knock ODC upside of the head!
I have been reading in AJ Stratton for a time. This collection of stories was very well done. Each having it own set of new, ways of dealing with the classic. I enjoyed them all. My favorite was the first about the outcome of Miss Mary King.
I love books of this author and I liked this one as well. All three stories were well written and enjoyable. I like stories about supporting characters, and I loved that both Lydia and Mary King found their HEA, The second story with a touch of supernatural involving Eros and Psyche in Elizabeth and Darcy’s relationship. It was a pleasant story, but not much of a change to the canon. Highly recommended as the other books of MJ Stratton
