I anxiously awaited the Kindle version of this book (I'm dyslexic and the Kindle helps me process better for some reason)and it was worth the wait! One of the things my dyslexia causes is for me to get caught in a loop rereading the same sentence over and over. Funnily enough, this book did just that to me, not because of my silly brain but thanks to Sheena's beautiful writing. I'd read a sentence and think "Wow! What an amazing way to say that!" And need to reread and soak it in again. It's a moving story that covers so many aspects of the human condition: feeling stuck, love, loss, adventure, and much more. I laughed, I cried and I enjoyed every word (sometimes twice).

This book isn’t just about a woman sailing and finding her sea legs. In fact, she only spends 2yrs on a sailboat, but those years are what helps her discover her new self. This book is about that journey, the adventure, heartbreak, healing, and being alive.

An easy read, but beautifully written. I laughed and cried along with Sheena, just as I had when I followed this sailing adventure on social media years ago!

A truly beautiful and wildly insightful memoir of finding yourself while living on a boat. It taught me about sailing and about what's possible when you let go and lean in to the adventure the universe is offering you.

This is such a fun read, filled with hope and wisdom. I was inspired by how one woman threw out rules and convention to truly discover the wild creative freedom, and courage, inside her. I could not put it down. Highly Recommended. I hope we will soon have a sequel.

A beautiful story about an epic, life-changing adventure. I’ve read 30 books so far this year, and this one is hands down the best of all of them. I didn’t want to put it down. 🌊⛵️🌝

Jeffers’ candidness about her fears and hopes creates a poignant and intimate reading experienc.

At its core, "Living Tidal" is a love story, not just in the romantic sense, but a love story about finding oneself. the kind of book we Millennials needed back in the 2008-2012 range….when shit was dismal. when our chosen paths, degrees & thoughts / hopes for a future life was SHATTERED.

how do we pick up the pieces? where do we start? why was our horizon SO fuzzy & SO small?
if you didn’t experience any of those feelings then OK good for you, we must have had VERY different after-college experiences & also fuck you —

BUT SERIOUSLY.

Living Tidal was a self-healing book that didn’t feel like self-help. it wasn’t antagonizing. it wasn’t pitying. it wasn’t destructive or self-loathing…..it was literally just the full-front, empathetic hug & nod of understanding that I personally yearned for after graduating college & receiving LITERAL and ZERO help from my parents on “how to start my adult life?”

I was warmed by this book because of its realness, its rawness and the TOTAL EXPOSURE we will ALL (yes, all) go thru at one point or another in life, because at the end of the day all we have are ourselves.

lesson, reason, season — how we treat ourselves, who we come into contact with, how we allow them to change us, and how we then look to shape our own futures.

I have followed Sheena since she was on a podcast explaining her sailing trip. It was the first time I had heard someone talk about picking up and leaving to sail around the world. This book connected pieces of her story, parts of the social media that she shared, and then connected it all back into how she lived life today.

I was in awe of what she accomplished. I had all sorts of emotions for this story. This woman who I only know through the computer screen. Sheena encourages you through her own writing and learning through her experiences.

This memoir is special. There was an unique tone and cadence as she ebbed and flowed through the ports.

If you’re interested in adventures, life, love, people, sailing and how any moment in life needs lived- read this. I am happy to be a supporter and I hope you check it out too!

“Where I once saw only fear, competition, jealousy, shame, injustice and anger, I now see patience, the pace of nature, the trust of the universe, and the magic of not needing to know - or possess control of - anything. Mostly, now I see me. There she is. A woman I adore and believe in.”

A story about sailing as much about finding the courage to be your true self. Sheena’s leap of faith leads her to tossing aside society’s expectations and conformities in favor of the open sea, sea beans, and unfettered conversations with the moon. Her expedition, initially fueled by the exhaustion of “the grind,” evolves to deep appreciation for nature, the communities we build, and one’s self. Her voyage reminds us to be kind, be brave, be yourself, and that allowing ourselves to let go and explore can often lead us to our own self-discovery.

A quick and engaging read! After having met the author in person, I have such a hard time rating this book. One thing for sure is that Sheena has a vivacity and a voice that leaps off the page and sounds in your ear with an honest and earnest edge.

The memoir is structured chronologically, and some of the best parts of the memoir are at the beginning. Her reflections on why she decided to go through with the romantic thrust of a dream of sailing away are so, so good. Most would never "give it all up" to sail the world, but I think everyone faces the quiet dread of wondering whether life has more to offer and feeling a yearning for a lightning bolt to a sense of purpose. Jeffers' contemplations on her relationship with her possessions, her job and finances, health, and her phone were true highlights, and I find those ideas sticking with me in my day-to-day well after I have finished reading.

Those who come to the memoir expecting an "Eat, Pray, Love" type of storyline of finding yourself and finding a new love may be a bit disappointed, as this memoir is much more about falling in love with yourself and with life. The English teacher/nerd side of me wanted even more of her reflectiveness in the later chapters, but I think that's a function of my expectations in terms of storycrafting. Besides, the nontraditional structure she develops towards the end works and makes it feel true and authentic to her story.

Though the "editor" side of me would perhaps structure the later chapters differently, I always appreciate writing that makes me think well after I put it down. Well worth a read!

Hang around any boat ramp at the end of a holiday weekend and you'll witness how boatlife can challenge any relationship. So few people could live aboard-much less endure a catamaran crossing-while putting a young relationship to the test. Sheena Jeffers allows us to stow away on her intimate and sometimes heartbreaking odyssey through the Caribbean and Central and South America. This sensory journey is part memoir, part adventure, part romance.
Tightly woven into the fabric of Sheena's journey are the women leaning into the wind as they offer kinship and service. From that first all-night radio conversation with a stranger, to the clicks of applause from a new community, to a couple seeking healthcare in a moment of dire need, to a mother and father's desparate plea-Living Tidal will stay with you, even when it's finally time to go home.

Living Tidal is an incredibly moving story of self love and acceptance. Sheena does an amazing job of painting a whimsical, yet relatable story of honoring her truest self, both in times of fear and happiness and the growth that comes from bravery and trust. A lovely reflection of what mother earth and love can provide. Expect a few laughs and tears along the way and maybe some motivation to change a few life coordinates.

One Saturday I attended a book signing suggested by a friend. The crowd was mostly women, all ages, but most younger than me. I was inspired by the Author and bought the book. The story is well written and I enjoyed reading of her learning experiences while sailing, both seamanship skills and life skills. The ending was refreshing in that it wasn’t a “they lived happily ever after “ ending. Thanks Sheena for sharing your growth and insight.

🌈Title: "Living Tidal"

✍️Author: sheena jeffers

📚Review: Living Tidal by Sheena Jeffers is a beautifully crafted memoir that reads like poetry set adrift on the open sea. On a cold November night, Jeffers pushes off from shore—both literally and metaphorically—launching a powerful narrative about transformation, self-discovery, and the quiet strength of starting over. With only a jacket, a scarf, and her desire for change, she sets sail into the unknown, guided more by instinct than destination.

Blending the rhythm of ocean tides with the emotional pulse of reinvention, this coming-of-age story captures both the vulnerability and resilience of a woman determined to reconnect with herself. Jeffers, a journalist with a lyrical voice, explores themes of love, identity, and the human need to belong—both to others and to ourselves.

A compelling read for anyone craving adventure or healing through introspection, Living Tidal invites readers to step away from the familiar and rediscover who they are, one wave at a time.

Sheena is stuck in a life that follows the rules but is not working—no job satisfaction, no partner, and no future other than this. Until she meets Kallan and signs onto his dream: to sell everything and sail away from it all. Thus begins the hero’s journey of self-discovery for Sheena. By writing about her journey, she’s takes her readers along. I learned a lot about sailing, the community, love, and Sheena as she grew into her truer, courageous self. Both the author and book deserve a standing ovation.

I am not a water person, but Sheena Jeffers gives just enough detail of boat life that I am taken back years ago to reading Sebastian Junger's The Perfect Storm. A different format, and a different boat, but enough details to be in the boat and worthy of the genre. Sheena's story of world and self-discovery drew me into her life and helped me see some things about myself, as any good memoir should. As a bonus, it is a perfect length for a one sitting read.

For any woman, especially sailors, who has ever wanted to just chuck it all and change their life or try something entirely different, this book is for you. It’s about having the courage to step outside of your comfort zone, trust in yourself and the forces of nature, and embrace ambiguity in life. Sheena Jeffers shares how she did all that and found herself and her own life force. A must read for women who sail!

I just read this book cover to cover and it is so, so good. The writing is as beautiful as the story is compelling. You're immediately brought alongside the narrator and experience her story, her feelings, her innermost thoughts. You'll want to read it in one sitting and then you're left wanting to jump into another journey with the author as soon as possible.
