After a nasty breakup, Joel Auguste only has one to join one of his favorite touring rock bands, Scyphozoa. Led by their enigmatic singer Asher Gaumont, the band is down a member. Their trombonist suddenly and mysteriously quit the band, and Joel seizes the opportunity out of sheer spite. He hates his home life, he hates college. He needs a change of scenery, and Scyphozoa fits the bill.
Only, something is looming underneath the band's near-perfect sheen. Evelyn and Adam Stone are rambunctious, Marty is a suspicious worm of a man, Asher only speaks cryptically, and Jessica drowns herself in cigarettes to forget something... Something dire, darker, and more gruesome than the human mind can comprehend.
Soon enough, Joel begins having visions from his past, only tainted by something evil. A dark presence stalks him from the shadows.
"Fate," it says.
In this stunning debut horror novel, Tyler Geis takes readers on a tour through the gates of hell and back. The lines between morality and fanaticism, life and death will be tested as Joel Auguste plays his heart out to the edge of the known universe. Witness the awesome, horrifying power of Scyphozoa.
Let me say this book is literally what I would call the definition of mind trip. Hands down it was creepy it was full of twists and turns and a lot of good ways and at some points my mind was going like 100 miles an hour not because it was confused because I was like "What is going to happen next?" It is all over the place but in a really really good way. The book follows Joel and Joel is going through a breakup and he's really trying to find himself right he's got a strained relationship with his mom, he's changed his college degree for something that was more substantial to music and he's close to graduating and doesn't even know what he's going to do when he graduates. That really is all of us at some point in our lives. His roommate suggests to them that they go out and they go have a good time at one of the local clubs and they come to find out Scyphozoa, which is the indie band of all indie bands, is actually going to be there playing and Joel is super excited super happy because he's also loves the band. Now rumor has it that he gets from his roommate that the trombone player, yes there's a trombone player, is no longer with the group and so he suggests to Joel that maybe this is his calling maybe this is the moment he's been waiting for, and he should go and audition so Joel puts all of his life's work that he's been doing to focus towards graduating into auditioning for the band he auditions for them in a back alley they invite him on stage I played his heart out and that's when he finds out in the middle of the set that his girlfriend that just broke up with him, broke up with him to date his girlfriend. So what does he do? He goes straight home packs up all of his stuff moves out of the apartment hops on the tour bus and leaves and goes right away, and everything seems to be going well and good and he's maybe finally finding himself or maybe he can do this for a little bit to kind of figure out what his next step in life would be. As the tour goes on Joel really begins to realize things aren't what they seem, he's seeing things in his dreams and his daydreams and there are other things are happening that he can't explain. Even during concerts and events that the band is putting on the front runner seems to have something slightly off and he can't connect with most of the other band members. Then bus driver really knows something's up and kind of lets Joel understand that there's something a little bit more sinister and weird at play and things really are not what they seem. As the book continues to go on you really get the heart of what the creepiness is and what's really underlying and the driving force of the band.
I enjoyed this one and if you can you can check it out.
