This is the second book from the companion series to "Sepotong Kisah di Balik 98" that I have read so far. Earlier this year, I picked up the volume featuring stories compiled by Luluk HF. Now, I have just managed to finish the instalment where the collection was curated by Dee Lestari.
To be completely honest, I went into this with much higher expectations because Dee Lestari happens to be one of my absolute favourite authors. Every single time I have picked up her work in the past, she has never failed to utterly fascinate me with her brilliant storytelling and prose. However, when it comes to this particular series, I must admit that I much prefer the version compiled by Luluk HF. I felt that the stories in Luluk HF's edition were far more diverse, offering a broader scope by capturing the perspectives of the 1998 tragedy from peoples from various layer of society in that era, delving into the raw experiences of both the victims and the survivors of that bloody historical event. In contrast, this volume focuses much more narrowly on the Chinese-Indonesian minority who fell victim to the atrocities.
To be fair, I have absolutely no issue with that thematic focus in itself. The problem, however, lies in the final story by the author Dewanto Amin Sadono, which went completely off track. His narrative was bogged down by convoluted metaphors, far too many figures of speech, and a highly disjointed plot structure. I actually remember reading one of his short stories previously in "Sepucuk Surat dari Hindia Belanda", and even then, I found myself unable to relate to his style or enjoy his work. There are simply too many long-winded metaphors, the plot gets incredibly messy, and the writing feels overly literary to the point of pretentiousness. As a result, the core narrative gets completely lost, leaving it entirely unclear what he is actually trying to communicate. On top of that, the characters in his piece felt distinctly off and lacked the resonance found in the other three stories, which handled the plight of the Chinese-Indonesian minority with much more care. Even there are no Chinese-Indonesian minority character from his story in this book.
In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed the other three stories written by Shan Patricia, Aliurridha, and Aldi A. I found myself deeply moved and profoundly saddened while reading about the victims and survivors' experiences, which left me with a heavy, bitter feeling. It was solely the final piece by Dewanto Amin Sadono that completely derailed the book for me. To make matters worse, the actual 1998 tragedy was barely present, accounting for perhaps a mere 20 percent of the entire story.
Will I continue reading this sequel series? Probably, yes! Even though this specific book was a bit of a letdown due to Mr Dewanto’s contribution, I remain incredibly curious about the other companion volumes. I am especially keen to read the ones curated by other great Indonesian literary figures, particularly Ibu Okky Madasari, as I am a massive fan of her work. Ultimately, because the final story was so difficult to enjoy, I feel I must give this collection a rating of 3.5 out of 5 stars

Tiap kisah menarik!
