I'm not really sure yet what the theme of this latest series is supposed to be. Book One I would call romantic suspense, and this one Book Two I would call romantic mystery, more angsty than her usual. The author herself says this is a “total rewrite” of one of her earlier books. I personally appreciate it when an older book gets an update, and this one was worthy of the time spent as it was pretty enjoyable for me. I had so many questions pop up in my mind as I read through the story, most of which got answered as the story progressed, but it really kept me engaged and compelled to read on. I was never really sure who the father would be or if the mother would come back or what the background check would reveal. There were a few surprises near the end—things that didn't go down the way I thought they would. A little sketchy on the resolution, but if there's a next book I expect we'd get more detail on it then. All in all it was a fun read and I'm glad I got an early copy from Booksprout so I could give this honest review.

I enjoyed My Only Mistake: Book 2 of Texas Diamonds. This was a cute story but it was hard to follow in a few spots and a little far fetched. Dex finds a baby on his doorstep, it may or may not be his. Gaby isn’t the baby’s mother but she will pretend to be if it gets her the baby and keeps her safe. Her sister is the baby’s mother and she isn’t a good person. We follow the two in trying ti care for the baby and navigate their growing relationship. I liked the storyline and the characters. I would recommend this book.

This is book two of the Texas Diamonds series and the main characters are Dex (Dexter) Messina, with a job that deals with diamonds and travelling round the world as COO of Messina Diamonds, and Gaby (Gabriella) Alwin, an accountant who has been caring for her twin sister Izzy’s young baby. Izzy had always been a free spirit and changed jobs all the time, as she lived a very nomadic life. She had come to stay with Gaby when she realised she was pregnant and didn’t even look after her baby, allowing Gaby to do so, until one night she has disappeared again. But she had also taken baby Rory, leaving a note saying she was dropping her off with her father after swearing for months she had no idea who the baby father was! Thankfully, Gaby had put tracking software on her sister’s phone and was on her way to get Rory back by the next morning. She and her neighbours know that it is a house in a wealthy area, but not who the house belongs to, so Gaby drives there to get Rory back. Dex lives in the pool house of his brother Derek’s large home and the quickest way to get to it is by going through the main house. He is stopped in shock when he gets to the steps of the house, when he finds a baby’s car seat by the front door and then realises a live baby is inside it, not a doll as he had thought! Instead of going into the house, he rings the doorbell, until Derek turns up and then points out the surprise on the doorstep.

There is a note under the blanket and it is only addressed to ‘D’, which could be either of them, and they are both quick to swear it couldn’t be theirs, as they are always really careful with the women they sleep with. Well, clearly one of them is thought to be the baby’s father according to the note. They are told simply that she is theirs and they have to take care of her for a while, with the note not even being signed! Derek calls his assistant Reina, looking for her to come and care for the baby, but considering the hour, she says she can’t make it. What a surprise. Dex then suggests calling his best friend Quinn, who owns a company dealing with all their security, but his ex-wife has just returned and would call the police. They can’t afford a scandal connecting their names to their company as new ventures are being explored. Derek is off to London in the morning with his assistant, so Dex will have to arrange for them to get paternity tests before he leaves, whilst he is left with the baby! When her neighbours figure out the name of the company that owns the house, Gaby finally realises what had happened, since Izzy had a temp job in the admin pool there, a year ago! She even recognises the younger brother, who is well known for going out with loads of beautiful women, and the part evening she spent with Izzy and saw her apparently hook up with Dex in the bar.

The police won’t do anything as Gaby isn’t Rory’s mother and it is perfectly legal for the mother to take her baby wherever she wants! She gets to the Messina brother’s home and rings the bell. The door is opened by Dex, and she can hear Rory crying in the background and pushes her way straight in. Dex thinks she is from the nay service he called, but Gaby answers that she is Rory’s mum! Dex is worn out having to be up all night along with Derek, caring for Rory and has been on his own for five hours with a crying baby and not knowing what to really do with her. He doesn’t know her but does recognise her and can’t remember sleeping with her at all. Something about her is familiar and so that worries him, as he never sleeps with strangers. Although the pregnancy happened sometime shortly after his father died! Gaby tries to tell him she realises she made a mistake leaving Rory on his doorstep, but Dex isn’t letting her out of his sight until the paternity test results are released and he knows whose baby it is. He grabs her wallet from her baby, but Izzy has been her usual self and taken all of Gaby’s cards and cash, leaving her own id in Gaby’s purse. He is sleep deprived, but somehow feels some sort of possessiveness towards both Gaby and the baby and has no clue how to look after a baby and is feeling incompetent. But he won’t let her leave with baby Rory but does drive her home to pick up and her and Rory’s belongings that they will need for the next two weeks.

Gaby is finding Dex impossibly attractive and finds her body but flinches every tie he calls her by her sister’s name and asks him to call her Ella, which she sometimes uses. When he sees her home, he can tell she cares for Rory and is very organised, so she will be a godsend over the next two weeks while they await the test results. He thinks she must have recognised his picture in the paper recently and figured out she could get a huge payout. Something Gaby denies vehemently! He takes her round to the pool house and allows her to get comfortable in the spare room, which he usually uses as an office, telling her to let Derek’s housekeeper Mavis know if there is anything else she needs. Derek is the workaholic of the two brothers and also a commitment phobic, but Dex does his share of the work since their father died. He has a lot to learn about his baby and finally breaks his stubborn mood and asks Ella to help show him what to do. The pair start to bond over looking after Rory, sharing night feeds and cuddle time on the sofa. It doesn’t take Dex long to want her back in his bed especially after seeing what she comes out into his living room wearing during the night, but for Gaby it is a somewhat different knowing she hasn’t slept with him before. She gets to see a different side to him as they spend more time together and the attraction is growing, and she decides she might as well take the chance to sleep with him, but he takes it the wrong way the next morning! Each will have to make their own decisions once the tempers fade. It won’t be straight forward as the truths start to come out and someone is going to be the loser, as Gaby has already realised. She’s lost her heart to the man who gave a family heirloom to little Rory and has taken to being a father in such a sweet manner. Dex has decisions to make on his future and his part in Rory’s life, and maybe even Gaby’s!

A shocking dereliction of motherhood by freeloading Izzy and she is so lucky to have a twin sister who took such good care of Rory, as well as still doing her own job. Dex and Derek are going to have to change their lives now Rory is around and Dex in particular, has a few choices to make now he knows the truth about everything. A sweet falling for each other over the shared time with cute baby Rory, getting over his own childhood experiences, and realising how perfect Gaby is for him and his future. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout, and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Not your average secret baby tale.
Dex gets home late one night, only to find a baby carrier on the front porch. Complete with baby. There's a note with the little girl, addressed only to D. The problem is, this is his brother's house, and his name is Derek. So who does this baby belong to?
Gaby has been caring for her twin sister's baby since she was born, as if she was her own. But she wakes up one morning, and her sister and the baby are gone. Only a note is left behind, saying she left the baby with her father. The father whose identity her sister previously denied knowing.
Gaby races to get the baby, claiming to be her mother. But Dex accuses her of abandonment, and won't let her leave with the child. Well she's not leaving without her niece, so Gaby ends up moving in with him so she doesn't lose her again.
Over the next couple of weeks, Gaby tries to get Dex to see the daily grind of taking care of a baby. She expects him to decide it's just too much, and let them go. But Dex takes it all in stride. Mostly. Worse yet, he gets attached to the little girl, and Gaby fears he'll never let her go.
What happens when Gaby's lies come to light? Will she lose the little girl who has become her whole life? And hers are not the only lies told.
But the paternity tests the brothers took will answer some questions. Right?
Wow. This pulled me in and never let go.
Gaby was used to doing everything on her own. She wanted to give Dex a little taste of that. What she ended up with was someone who helped her. A partner, of sorts. She definitely wasn't expecting that. But she knew it was only a matter of time before she would have to tell Dex the truth, and it would all come crashing down.
There's a lot of push and pull between Gaby and Dex, neither wanting to admit growing feelings, even to themselves. When they finally do, there are so many things standing in their way that it seems insurmountable. But both of them want what's best for the baby who has become so important to them.
This was a fun forced proximity, secret baby romance. There were some funny bits and a little angst, just enough to make you really want them to figure it all out.

This is book two in The Texas Diamonds series and it is Dex and Gaby’s story. When Gaby’s twin sister Izzy got pregnant with Dex’s baby it was Gaby that took care of Rory and then Izzy disappeared taking a lot of Gaby’s things after she left Rory on Dex’s doorstep so now Gaby is determined to get her niece Rory back and the only way that she could see it working is for her to say that she is Rory’s mom while trying to keep her distance from Dex only sometimes things don’t always go as planned which Gaby will soon find out. Dex is a billionaire bachelor who lives a jet set life which suits him just fine because that way he can do anything that he wants too especially as he didn’t do relationships because that could become very complicated but when a baby girl is left on his doorstep and he is told that Rory is his daughter the biggest surprise is on him and then Gaby shows up saying that she is Rory’s mom and that is when things start to get even more complicated. Dex and Gaby start to take care of Rory together and that forms a bond that neither wanted or expected but what happens when feelings start to arrive and Gaby’s secret is eventually revealed. I really enjoyed reading this book and look forward to reading more books by this author in the future.

Not up to Jayne’s usual excellent standards

I am normally a huge fan of Emma Lee Jayne, and the first book in her Texas Diamonds series was fantastic (every one of her other books I’ve read has been incredible), but I have to say… this one left me wondering if it was the same author I know and love. When I got to the author’s note at the end that this was a very old publication she’d re-written, it did make more sense. I’m still only giving this 3.5-stars, rounded up to 4.

Overall, this one could have used a lot more updating, but it’s mostly that the subject matter was extremely problematic. The whole idea of the twin sister switch and the baby left on the doorstep and just the sheer volume of lies and leaving out all of the critical details - the entire plot was a huge red flag from beginning to end.

I was trying to find the silver lining the whole way through because I wanted to love this book! I will say that Dex’s character was such a great guy, but a shame he was put in the awful situation he was. In the real world, he would have fled the country to escape what occurred in this plot.

I received an advance copy of this book from Booksprout, and this is my honest review.

Interesting, Angsty, Romance with an Abandoned Baby that Shows Promise...

This book shows promise, but had a few off the wall elements that just did not cut it for me. I liked both Gaby and Dex and thought their intentions were good and loved how they both wanted to do the best for Rory, but there were many missing pieces for me regarding their siblings. On Gaby's side I could not believe she put up with how Izzy took advantage of her, stole her money, identity, and credit cards and then she took the blame for being Rory's mother and abandoning her. And on Dex's side he had to know he wasn't Rory's father, but then the book just skipped over how they left her with "absent" Derek to raise while their "instant" romance (apparently they fell in love during two weeks of living together and caring for Rory?), while they are suddenly now married and expecting? The story is told via dual POV so maybe if more of their inner thoughts of how they got there were fleshed out, it would be more believable?

I was sent an ARC by the author and I am voluntarily leaving my honest review.

A Messy Situation . . .

Gaby Alwin’s twin sister Izzy, a very irresponsible and unlikable person (in my opinion), becomes pregnant allegedly with billionaire Dexter Messina’s child (her best guess, I think). So she dumps the baby, Rory, on Dex’s doorstep for him to deal with. She also later steals things from her twin sister and takes off. When Gaby learns that the baby was left with Dexter Messina, she is determined to get her back, even if she has to lie and say that she is the irresponsible mother. (Good intentions but still not impressing me.)

Dex doesn’t take her word for it that he fathered this child and insists on a paternity test to confirm it. (Both he AND his brother took the test…) In the meantime, waiting the two weeks it will take for the results, Dex and Gaby begin to share the parental role to take care of the baby. Will their proximity and the love they show toward Rory bring them together as a couple? Could it lead to something more? Or will the test results and the additional information Quinn digs up compel Dex to consider other options?

Gaby has a twin sister -Izzy - who has always been irresponsible. When she became pregnant Gaby took her in and cared for the baby more than her sister ever did. Only now Izzy has taken off and left her child on it's father's doorstep. Gaby desperately wants to get her back but she is only the aunt. So she decides to pretend to be the child's mother. Of course things only get more complicated...
The idea of the story was interesting and the book was entertaining enough but the story just had so many unbelievable elements. The sister just disappears and we basically never her from her again? Gaby and Dex fall in love just by living with each other for a week (in which Gaby goes out of her way to keep her distance)? And in the end everything works out.
In my opinion the story had more potential but it felt rushed at times. It was quite entertaining but not a must-read for me.

My Only Mistake is definitely a very good 'In between' book. You know, the books that just naturally follow the typical way a typical romance story goes. No huge revelations, no sudden or unexpected twists and turns, just a straight forward GOOD book that you read if you want to switch off your brain before diving into heavier stuff. Maybe a kind of palate cleanser?
The characters are likable, the storyline isn't necessarily new but still very enjoyable... I can definitely recommend this book for a bit of light reading.

It was easy to understand how Gaby got attached to her niece and how Dex found himself in a new place when Gaby's sister Izzy left her baby on his doorstep. Gaby is a good aunt and Dex is blindsided by his new responsibility. They bond over the baby but are hampered by the deception that Gaby uses to stay close to her niece. This is a good story and I won't spoil what happens but just say it was easy to understand both main characters given the spot they were in.

My Only Mistake: a forced proximity, secret identity, surprise baby romcom (Book 2 of Texas Diamonds) by Emma Lee Jayne. OMG! I wanted to strangle Izzy for Gaby- what a mess she made but it did lead to a very fulfilling and entertaining story that brought about heartfelt drama with plenty of wicked banter and undeniable chemistry between Dex and Gaby (Ella). I thought their story was well written and I enjoyed it.

Dex has it all but feels like he's missing something. When he finds a baby on his doorstep his life is turned upside down. Gaby finds out that her twin sister left her baby on the presumed dad so she goes to get her niece. Dex isn't prepared to let the baby leave until he knows for sure if he is the father. Gaby pretends to be her twin and finds herself falling for Dex. What happens when he finds out she isn't who he thinks she is? Is the baby really Dex's? Can what started out with lies about identity turn into more?

Engaging romance. 5*

The story of Dex and Gaby is a well-written romance that explores the emotional consequences and reality of having a baby with the wrong sister. The protagonists' characters were well-described, and the novel had scene-appropriate dialogue with good use of English. Their interaction gradually evolves into mutual attraction and love. The book ends on a nice HEA. I would happily recommend it.

My first ever Emma Lee Jaynes book and certainly won't be my last. The characters had great personalities and the story was heartbreaking. I felt so bad for Gaby and the love that she shared for her niece Rory. I had so much hatred for her sister Isabelle when she took off with Rory and left her with D. If you are looking for a good story you have found it!.

This is book 2 in Emma Lee Jayne's Texas Diamonds series and can be read as a standalone. This is one of her earlier published books that's been re-released. That said, I enjoyed the overall concept, storyline and characters. Our main characters Dex and Gaby have a rollercoaster of a ride in this book and I'm certainly excited to read more from Jayne!

This was kind of a mistaken identity romance. I say kind of because it was an intentional misdirection by the FMC in an effort to regain possession of her niece after her twin sister left the infant on the supposed father’s doorstep.

This wasn’t my favorite book by this author but that could be a me thing since I wasn’t that wild about the baby being abandoned by her mother on a doorstep. 4 stars!.
